Common 2011 Mercury Mariner problems
The Mercury Mariner, produced from 2005 to 2011, is a compact crossover SUV that shares many components with the Ford Escape. While generally well-received, the Mariner has some common issues that owners should be aware of.
One common issue across all models and years is engine oil leaks. These can be caused by worn gaskets, damaged seals, or a cracked oil pan. Regular maintenance, including changing the oil and oil filter, can help prevent these leaks. If a leak is detected, it is important to address it promptly to avoid further damage or safety risks.
Suspension problems are another common issue with the Mariner. These can include worn out shock absorbers, strut failure, or ball joint failure. Regular inspections and maintenance can help catch and address these issues early on.
Fuel system issues are also common in the Mariner. These can include fuel pump failure or corrosion of the fuel tank. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues, and it is important to address any warning signs, such as strange noises or warning lights on the dashboard, as soon as they appear.
The first-generation Mariner (2005-2007) had problems with ignition coils, spark plugs, and transmission shudder.
In addition to these common issues, the Mariner has also had several recalls. One recall affected certain model year 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles, which had a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. This could result in the removal of Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.
To prevent these issues from occurring, it is important to perform regular maintenance on your Mercury Mariner. This includes changing the oil and oil filter regularly, inspecting the suspension system, and replacing worn parts as needed. It is also important to address any warning signs, such as strange noises or warning lights on the dashboard, as soon as they appear. With proper care and attention, the Mercury Mariner can continue to provide reliable transportation for many years.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-10
- VIN: 4M2CN9HG4BK
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: While my wife was driving the vehicle, the power assisted steering failed and produced a "power assist fault code" on the display. The car became too hard for a 74 year old woman to be able to steer. I took the car to the Ford dealer near me who confirmed it was the steering torque sensor had failed and needed to order in one and would cost $600 to replace. I did a VIN search on your data base, but it didn't show any recalls for this problem. However a google search showed a recall for my vehicle make, model and date of manufacturer and part of the Ford 14SO5 recall. The information on your web site shows that Mercury Mariners manufactured prior to Sept.11, 2010 were affected. Mine was manufactured in August of 2010. According to the Ford notices as published on your web site my car should be part of that recall and should receive a software update that would prevent the steering assist from being turned off. The Ford dealer is refusing to do the update and sensor replacement for free since that recall doesn't show up under my VIN. Its funny, because my car is doing the exact thing the recall was for and fits the vehicle description and date of manufacture to qualify.

- Summary: This car has excessive under body rust under all the wheels wells. I was just told that my car would not pass a State Inspection because the on the front drivers side there is a bracket that holds up the engine is almost totally gone. I have read and over that this vehicle has a known rust and corrosion issue and Mercury/Ford has not been made responsible. I bought this car from a Ford Dealer in Aberdeen, MD used in 2018 and made them aware that I noticed rust on the rear wheel panels. They told me there is no recall however now I am not in a position to purchase or fix the entire under carriage of this vehicle. And I do not feel safe that an important bracket supporting the engine is totally rusted out.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-12
- VIN: 4M2CN9HG7BK
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: REGARDING: NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 14V-284, FORD RECALL NUMBER 14S05 ELECTRIC POWER STEERING THE RECALL INSTRUCTIONS TO DEALERS CALL FOR A SIGNAL TEST AND EITHER REPROGRAMMING A SENSOR OR REPLACING THE TORQUE SENSOR BASED ON THE RESULTS. IT ALSO CALLS FOR REPLACING THE TORQUE SENSOR UPON FAILURE IF THE FAILURE OCCURRED BEFORE THE VEHICLE HAD THE RECALL SENSOR PERFORMED. THE RECALL INSTRUCTIONS TO DEALERS ALSO TELLS THEM THAT A TORQUE SENSOR THAT FAILS AFTER THE REPROGRAMMING WAS DONE IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. THE PURPOSE OF THE SENSOR REPROGRAMMING WAS TO INITIATE A WARNING IN THE DRIVER CONTROL CENTER UPON IMMINENT SENSOR FAILURE, BUT DOES NOTHING TO FIX, REPAIR OR REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART. I HAD THE DEALER PERFORM THE TEST AND SOFTWARE UPGRADE AND WAS UNDER THE MISTAKEN IMPRESSION THAT THE RECALL WAS TO ACTUALLY REPLACE THE STATISTICALLY FAULTY PART , AND NOT JUST A POTENTIAL WARNING. THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ON MY VEHICLE FAILED ON 4-12-2018 AND, INCIDENTALLY, I DID NOT GET A WARNING ON THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER BEFORE THE FAILURE; SO THE REPROGRAMMING DID NOTHING FOR MY VEHICLE. MY QUESTION IS WHY IS FORD/MERCURY NOT REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE FAILED SENSORS THAT ARE THE SUBJECT OF THE RECALL? I UNDERSTAND FORD NOT BEING REQUIRED TO REPLACE SENSORS THAT MIGHT FAIL BUT GIVING DRIVERS NOTICE OF IMMINENT FAILURE, BUT FORD SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO REPLACE SENSORS THAT DO FAIL EVEN AFTER THE REPROGRAMMING BECAUSE THE REPROGRAMMING IS NOT INTENDED TO FIX THE PROBLEM JUST WARN DRIVERS. THE SENSOR REPLACEMENT IS NEARLY A $2000 REPAIR THAT I BELIEVE SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE RECALL. CAN THE NHTSA EXPLAIN THE RATIONAL FOR NOT REQUIRING FORD TO ACTUALLY FIX THE DEFECT THAT CAUSES A SERIOUS HAZARD?
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER (MANISTEE FORD IN MANISTEE, MICHIGAN) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE RECALL AND STATED THAT THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-17
- VIN: 4M2CN9H71BK
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: GOT HOME FROM SHOPPING, FIANCEE WAS GETTING THE REST OF THE GROCERIES. SHE CLOSED THE TRUNK NORMALLY, NEVER SLAMMING OR ANYTHING, AND THE ENTIRE REAR WINDSHIELD SHATTERED AND FELL TO THE GROUND. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT SHE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED IF ONE OF THE LARGE PIECES HAD FELL ON HER OR A SHARD COULD'VE FLOWN IN HER EYES. A WINDSHIELD SHOULD NOT SHATTER AND EXPLODE FROM NORMAL USE, THIS IS CLEARLY DEFECTIVE AND I WILL BE IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE HYDRAULIC PUMPS RESPONSIBLE FOR HOLDING THE WINDSHIELD UP WHEN IT IS OPENED SOMEHOW MALFUNCTIONED AND PUSHED ON THE WINSHIELD TOO HARD WHEN IT CLOSED, RESULTING IN THE COMPLETE SHATTERING OF THE WINDSHIELD.

APPARENTLY FORD OMITTED THIS INFO FROM THE PUBLIC JUST WONDERED IF I HAVE ANY RECOURSE TO RESOLVE THIS. FORD DEALER SAYS NO RECALL. FORD COMPANY SAYS THIS IS NOT UNDER RECALL AS I HAD PRIOR RECALL TAKEN CARE OF. THERE ARE NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS VEHICLE AND THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE EXACT SAME OUTCOME. 2011 Mercury Mariner recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2011 Mercury Mariner.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Ford Escape vehicles manufactured February 26, 2009, to April 29, 2012, and 2010-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured February 25, 2009, to December 12, 2010. On vehicles with a 3.0L engine, the Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) may crack, causing a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the FDM flange with one that has a redesigned fuel supply port, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices were mailed to owners on December 13, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S41.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured August 18, 2006, through September 11, 2010. The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power steering control module (PSCM) and the instrument cluster module, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the PSCM when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, the affected components will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on July 18, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S05.

Positive 2011 Mercury Mariner car reviews

I love the car, but I always find dealing with dealerships and mechanics frustrating and contentious. It's just one of those things, isn't it?
-
This car was actually our number two choice. We had picked out a JGC to purchase but kept getting the run around from the Jeep dealership. All I can say is, thank goodness they tried to hose us. We got a much better vehicle, with more options, and better overall quality, for a heck of a lot less money. We are sold on Ford products for life. Thank you, Bob Howard Ford of Okc! I will never stray to GM or Chrysler again.
-
Hi there! I noticed that you have a 2011 i4 premier and you're not afraid to push that engine to its limits on the highway. It's great to hear that you're still getting decent gas mileage even when driving at high speeds. I also wanted to mention that using premium fuel on road trips can be a smart choice. Thanks for sharing your experience!
-
4 Cylinder was surprisingly powerful and very quiet on the highway. It has a lot of hauling capacity and gets over 30 mpg, which is a real treat. Overall, it's a great little SUV that's fun to drive and easy on gas.
-
This SUV has been a reliable and steady companion for me for the past four years. Although the fit and finish are not the best and the silver color may not be the most eye-catching, it is a solid vehicle that I can count on. The entertainment system could use some improvement as the radio (whether Sirius XM or AM/FM) tends to cut in and out, even in wide open spaces. Additionally, the leather interior seats have darkened for some reason, which is quite odd considering that I am an office worker who takes pride in hygiene. Despite these minor issues, I feel safe in the vehicle and its ride is smooth enough, although road noise can be noticeable at times. I have had to replace the tires every 18 months, even with rotating them and not putting many miles on each year. The dealership has been unable to determine the cause, but I still trust in the vehicle's overall performance.

I got this vehicle after driving a Mountaineer for 6 years. While the Mariner was a little disappointing in comparison, I did get a great deal on it. The gas mileage and comfort are both okay, but the drive can be a bit noisy at times. Unfortunately, even though I got the 'flex fuel' model, I haven't been able to find any flex fuel in my area of the country. It's a bit frustrating, but overall I'm still happy with my purchase.

In November 2009, I purchased a Mercury Mariner. Unfortunately, in January, the car began to make a squealing noise when started in certain temperatures. Despite taking the car back to the dealer four times and contacting Ford customer care, the issue remains unresolved. However, I am confident that a solution can be found and I will continue to pursue a resolution. It is important to me that my vehicle operates smoothly and I am willing to take the necessary steps to ensure that it does.
