Common 2006 Mercury Mariner problems
The Mercury Mariner is a compact crossover SUV produced from 2005 to 2011.
One of the most frequently reported problems is related to the steering system. Some owners have experienced steering shaft issues, which can cause steering to fail unexpectedly. These issues can be dangerous, especially at high speeds or in tight turns.
Another common problem reported by owners of the 2006 Mercury Mariner is transmission failure. Transmission failure can be a serious issue, as it can prevent the vehicle from moving or cause it to stall unexpectedly.
The blower motor is another component that has caused problems for some owners of the 2006 Mercury Mariner. The blower motor may fail, causing the heating and cooling system to stop working. This can be a major inconvenience, especially in extreme temperatures.
For owners of the hybrid Mercury Mariner, the cooling pump is a common point of failure. This can cause the vehicle to overheat, which can lead to more serious issues if not addressed promptly.
In addition to these specific issues, some owners have reported experiencing a low current draw that can cause the battery to die, even when the vehicle is turned off. This can be a major inconvenience, especially if the vehicle is left in a parking garage or other location where it cannot be easily recharged.
While these issues are concerning, it's important to note that the 2006 Mercury Mariner received mixed reviews from owners, with some reporting that they have had no mechanical problems with their vehicles.
If you are experiencing any of these issues with your 2006 Mercury Mariner, it's important to have them addressed promptly by a qualified mechanic. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues from occurring, and can help ensure that your vehicle remains safe and reliable.

IN HOT WEATHER...VEHICLE ENGINE QUITS WHILE IN MOTION ON FREEWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH (3 TIMES), AND CITY STREETS (3 TIMES). EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WHEN ENGINE QUITS WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY IN TRAFFIC. ALL YOU CAN DO (WHILE PRAYING!) IS COAST TO A STOP AND DO YOUR BEST TO PULL OFF ON TO SHOULDER OF ROAD WITHOUT CRASHING INTO OTHER VEHICLES. WE HAVE TRIED 3 TIMES TO GET FORD MOTOR TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM...ALL TO NO AVAIL. THE LAST TIME WE HAD TO PAY APPROXIMATELY $1,500. HOWEVER, FORD MOTOR DID REIMBURSE US! BUT AT THE SAME TIME THEY CLAIMED THE PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED. NOT TRUE! ABOUT TWO YEARS LATER THE PROBLEM STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN. FOR10 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN DRIVING A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE THAT WAS--AT ALL TIMES--A DANGER TO OUR LIVES. FORD MOTOR SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THIS PROBLEM MUCH MORE SERIOUSLY AND EITHER REPLACED THE VEHICLE WITH A ANOTHER ONE, OR TRULY FIXED THE PROBLEM. I FEEL FORD MOTOR HAS LIABILITY IN THIS MATTER. THE CAR IS VERY GOOD AND TOO STRONG FOR THAT THIN BOLT IN THIS PART. LUCKILY, THE FOURTH TIME IT HAPPENED, THE FORD DEALER DIDN'T CHARGE ME FOR THE NEW PART, WHICH ALSO BROKE OFF TWO WEEKS LATER. IT HAS ALSO BROKEN TWO BELTS ALREADY. TRYING TO SOLVE THE ISSUE, I WENT TO METRIC BOLTS AND NUTS, IN WAKEFIELD, MA, AND BOUGHT A HIGHER GRADE HARDENED STEEL BOLT/SCREW, AND IT ALSO BROKE OFF A WEEK LATER. ONCE AGAIN, TWO DAYS AGO, MY MECHANIC PUT IN ANOTHER HARDENED STEEL SCREW. HE ADDED A NUT NEAR THE BEARING, WHICH MAKES A SQUEAKING NOISE, BUT IT HAS NOT BROKEN YET. I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE IT FAR FROM HOME, BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN TOWED SO MANY TIMES ALREADY. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND REALIZED THAT IT IS A CONSTANT ISSUE. SOME PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THE OCCURRENCE OF THIS ISSUE 17 TIMES IN LESS THAN A YEAR. IT IS ALSO THE SAME FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH MAZDA TRIBUTE, FORD ESCAPE, FORD FUSION, ETC. 2006 Mercury Mariner recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2006 Mercury Mariner.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
- Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric vehicles manufactured October 13, 2003, to June 20, 2008, and 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles manufactured June 10, 2005, to June 20, 2008. The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.
- Consequence: If the hybrid electronics system overheats, it may shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S19.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
- Summary: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, PASSENGER CARS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED WITHOUT GREASE BEING APPLIED TO THE OUTPUT SHAFT GEAR.
- Consequence: AFTER A PERIOD OF CONTINUOUS USE ON THE HIGH SPEED SETTING, LACK OF GREASE ON THE OUTPUT SHAFT GEAR MAY CAUSE THE GEAR TO DISTORT OR FRACTURE DURING OPERATION RESULTING IN A LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION. INOPERATIVE WIPERS UNDER INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS COULD CAUSE A CRASH DUE TO IMPAIRED VISIBILITY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIPER MOTOR FOR THE PRESENCE OF GREASE AND GREASE THE WIPER MOTOR GEARS IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673 OR LINCOLN/MERCURY AT 1-800-521-4140.

Positive 2006 Mercury Mariner car reviews

I traded a Dodge Dakota and a PT Cruiser in for the Mercury and I am completely satisfied. It handles like a sports sedan, gets reasonable mileage, and is very comfortable. Additionally, it is one of the few SUVs that include crossbars on the roof rack. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
-
I recently purchased this cute little vehicle from the local dealership. Although I liked the stylings, I was disappointed to find the Overdrive Off button flashing, as I had experienced troubles with it before in my Ford Ranger XLT. I was hoping to get a Ford vehicle without this button, as it serves no purpose in holding back downhill. Additionally, I have heard some loud noises from the transmission, which makes me worry about its reliability in the future. Despite these concerns, I still find it fun to drive.
-
The seats are incredibly comfortable, with 14 gel packs to ensure the perfect fit. The car has plenty of power and is great on gas. There are also lots of options to choose from, making it a fantastic deal. Thank you!
-
Great ride! Great comfort! Excellent handling! And good performance! While it may be a bit of a gas drinker, it's not really bad, and it takes regular. I've driven Jeep Grand Cherokees, Land Rovers, and Suzukis, but this vehicle is better. It's ideal in size, style, comfort, roominess, and performance!

This is a great option for anyone looking for a nice vehicle at a very reasonable price. It's a good small SUV for city driving. However, if you're someone who likes a little power in reserve for maneuvering, I wouldn't recommend it. This vehicle can disappoint on the power curve at bad times, such as when changing lanes or making left turns between traffic. Nonetheless, it's still a good family vehicle that's sturdy and overall nice to drive (with the exception noted). We decided to keep it because, overall, we got a lot of vehicle for the price compared to the Toyota Highlander, RAV4, Nissan Murano, and others.

I bought this car used and was impressed with its overall style from the first sight. The car runs excellently and the sound system meets standards. However, I found the seat warmer buttons to be inconveniently placed, as the passenger seat automatically turns on when someone gets in. Additionally, the car can be quite loud and takes all bumps, big or small, very hard. Unfortunately, there seems to be no give in the suspension or shocks when riding over anything that disrupts the smoothness of the asphalt. Furthermore, it does not handle water very well and tends to hydroplane even in the smallest amount of water. I would not recommend it for any type of off-roading. Lastly, the fuel mileage is very poor.

In 2006, I leased a 2006 Mariner for my wife, hoping to find a more economical replacement for her 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. Unfortunately, the smaller sized four-cylinder SUV did not meet her expectations. She complained about the lack of power, and after driving it myself, I must admit that the engine is not powerful enough for that size/weight vehicle. Additionally, the brakes are substandard in wet conditions, and the gas tank is too small, resulting in more frequent trips to the gas station. Overall, it was not a fun vehicle to drive. This was my first and only experience with a Ford Motor Company product.
