The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.
The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.
First generation (GG1; 2002)
The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).
The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.
Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.
In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.
Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.
In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.
In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

- Summary: The car had a (SUA) Sudden Unintended Acceleration malfunction. No, the car was totaled and towed away. My safety was put at risk as I was slowly pulling into a parking spot, eased my foot onto the brake and this malfunction caused my car to involuntarily jolt into a rampant high speed. It jumped a curb and crashed into a tree. My brake was useless in stopping this runaway vehicle. The only thing that stopped it was that tree! The airbag deployed and I was badly bruised from the airbag. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians or other cars near mine. There were no warning lights or messages before, during or after the accident. It happened so quickly because the tree was only a few feet in front of my car.

- Summary: Cracked Cylinder Head. At 50,400 miles. This is far too common of a problem for such a new car with so few miles. I have seen many similar reports online. My mechanic was baffled. This is a $5k cost AT LEAST. Mazda has a history of not covering these defects. And it IS a defect, not a simple wear and tear issue. A cracked cylinder head can eventually lead to engine failure, so it is dangerous to drive with it. The problem HAS been confirmed by an independent service center. I got a oil pressure warning sign.

- Summary: 2009 Mazda 6 Rear subframe and springs are deemed unsafe due to extreme rusting and corrosion. The vehicle is registered and has been registered in both NY and PA (salt states), however was regularly washed and garage maintained. Vehicle will no longer pass inspection due to this issue and Mazda indicates no recall for the rear at this time and is ignoring that this is a highly prevalent issue. Mazda recalled and acknowledged this issue on these makes/models related to the front; however refuses to acknowledge and repair/recall the issue extending to the rear. The vehicle is in otherwise good shape, and the extreme rusting to the subframe/springs is not consistent with normal wear and tear. This is an extremely prevalent issue arising to these vehicles being ignored by Mazda. Mechanics are indicating the issue is extremely deteriorated and not safe, but that the vehicle is in otherwise good shape and the issue is consistent with faulty parts.

- Summary: The sensors on my alarm system will randomly activate, with alarm going off at 30 second intervals. The problem began approximately 6 months ago. I took the initiative to replace my cars battery, along with the battery in my fab. I really thought that solved my problem, as a first step fix. I began once again to identify the sound of my car alarm in multiple parking lots throughout time. I have been investigating this problem, and have read that this alarm problem has been sited by many Mazda 6 owners. I am the original owner of the 2009 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, and have 67,000 miles driven. I called the Repair Department at my dealership, and was told that it cost $185.00 for just the diagnosis. My auto insurance company policy price is based on using a secured vehicle. Right now I only can leave it unlocked in my garage, otherwise, my vehicle is at risk of being stolen.

If not fixed, airbags will not deploy in case of accident and that puts me and my family in danger. - Summary: The rear cross member / AKA (Rear Subframe) P/N GEG1-28-80X has completely rusted out. The car is no longer safe to drive per a Pennsylvania State inspection. If driven parts of the rear suspension will drop off the car creating a hazard to other motorists and the driver of the car can lose control / mobility causing a traffic accident. Picture the entire rear suspension suddenly collapsing, that is what is going to happen. The Front subframe was subject to a recall. That recall should have included the rear as it is the same material just a few feet away, subject to the same rusting issues. These subframes were not property designed to prevent rust or even withstand a little moisture, as my car has been very well maintained. When I read the online forms this is a flaw in ALL 2009- 2013 Mazda 6's and the sister car the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan. I have opened a case with Mazda USA case #[XXX]. They are going to inspect to confirm my mechanic diagnosis. However they are currently under no obligation to repair and replace the rusted parts but they should be as this should have been replaced when the front subframe recall was performed. - Summary: After getting the recall information about the front crossmember rusting out due to corrosion, I decided to check the rear crossmember on my car. WOW, the rear crossmember is SO much worse than the front one and I’ve read hundreds of similar stories about the exact same thing happening to other Mazda 6 sedans around these model years (2009-2013). The rear crossmember on my car, which supports the entire rear suspension is completely rusted thru in several spots and the lower end links aren’t even attached anymore because the brackets literally fell off and so now both back tires are leaning in at the top. It is very noticeable! Very unsafe to drive! I decided to park this car until a solution is reached with Mazda or the NHTSA on how to deal with this. I don’t know why the front crossmember was recalled but not the rear? There’s only 2 things that are rusted on my car, period…the front & rear crossmembers!

- Summary: The contact owns a 2012 Mazda Mazda6. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the steering wheel began to shake violently, with the low tire pressure warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over to inspect the vehicle and discovered that the front passenger’s side tire had detached from the vehicle. The contact's father was called to the scene and the spare tire was placed on the vehicle. The contact then drove to an independent mechanic where both the front driver’s and front passenger’s side tires were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test was performed; and the diagnostic test determined that the cross member had corroded and caused the tire failure. The contact was then notified that the vehicle was not covered under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V323000 (Structure, Suspension) and that the warranty on the vehicle had expired. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer and was not repaired. The failure mileage was 204,000.

Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V356 and 17V012.

I checked out several competitors before stumbling upon Mazda. After almost purchasing the Hyundai Sonata, I noticed the Mazda dealer across the street and decided to hold off until I looked at what they offered. The Mazda 6 was hands-down the best value for my money. The styling immediately caught my attention with its sports sedan look, curvy front fenders, and oval grille. The interior was way better than the Hyundai and even nicer than the Honda Accord. Then I took it for a spin...I was impressed with how incredibly quiet it is on the road. No wind noise and other than the smooth rumble of the motor, you don't hear anything at all. Then I noticed the price...I chose the Touring model. Upgrading to the Signature wasn't worth it to me since I didn't care about navigation (the Touring has Apple CarPlay so nav wasn't needed.) My only requirements were leather and sunroof and any color but grey (every car on the road nowadays is grey!) The blue with the tan leather interior is awesome. If I took all the badging off, people would swear it was a BMW or a Mercedes. My only complaints are minor. I wish the center armrest was moved forward a little bit because my arm ends up resting on the cupholder section instead of the padded console. I also wish the USB connector for the Apple CarPlay was in the front of the console rather than the rear. That's it, those are my only complaints. The rest of the car is 100% perfect. It was worth every penny I paid.

I bought a 2012 car in 2014 with 50K miles. As a salesperson who drives all day, it has been a reliable companion. With only a battery, tires and brakes needing repairs, it has taken me on long cross-country drives and day-to-day city stop and go driving without any major issues. Although some small things gave out quickly, such as the keys/power locks, trunk latch, interior lights and radio, it has been a great car overall. It has a spacious interior, great factory sound system and a wide clear view of the road with minimal blind spots. Although it is a sluggish car with slow acceleration, it was not bought for performance. I will miss this old, reliable car, but I have traded up for a BMW M series that I can finally afford. If I were back in the situation that I was when I originally bought it, I would definitely buy it all over again. It is definitely a smart buy, and if you need a simple, reliable car with a good amount of room, this is the ride for you.

This car is so much fun to drive! The Tiptronic transmission is especially great in the mountains and really helps with acceleration. It handles very nicely and cruises smoothly even at 80mph. The interior design is absolutely beautiful. I do have two minor complaints though. Firstly, the fuel economy isn't great - I mostly do freeway driving and am only averaging about 20mpg. Secondly, the check engine light came on after only 800 miles on the car. I haven't brought it in yet, but I'm sure it's nothing - the car is running fine.

My family has owned this car for its entire lifespan and I must say, it has been an amazing ride. The 2004 Mazda 6 v6 was bought new with top trim level by my dad and it has never had engine or transmission problems. We have only had to do standard maintenance and a few airbag recalls. We've replaced the oil every 6k miles, replaced the brakes every 40k miles, and done all the other maintenance needed, and the car just hums along perfectly. When standard maintenance requires replacing parts, like the brake pads, rotors, and calipers, it can be expensive, but they do seem to last longer than other vehicles. I absolutely love this car! The tach never exceeds 3000 when driving normally, but you can kick it faster than new cars if you need to. All of the horses have stayed in the engine over the 16 years we've had this car. We've accrued some body damage to the car over the years, but the incredible body design of the car makes it beautiful. No other car from the era holds up in looks, but the Mazda 6 is still a good looking car. The only real downside is the mileage. We get 23.4 mpg in normal driving, and 26ish mpg on a highway (measuring between full fills and mileage). Still, for a car from that era with 16 years in the engine, that isn't bad. The mileage will drop significantly in winter and if you leave an oil change waiting too long (my brother, before I got it, let it go 8k miles without a change; it was down to 16mpg in winter driving). The brakes are amazing. You can slam them and stop nice and quick when you have to. I've avoided a few bad accidents thanks to them. Finally, the car has only just started rusting this year, which is remarkable considering we haven't been particularly careful in preventing rust. At 160k miles, 16 years, this car is still going strong and I'm grateful for all the memories it has given us.

Update- Jul 23. Congratulations to my Mazda 6 for passing the 165k mile threshold! I have put more than 100k miles on it since I purchased it used and I am happy to report that I have had no major issues with it. Like many direct injected vehicles, I do believe I'm getting some carbon build-up, but that's my only issue. As I have gotten used to driving a manual transmission, I must admit that sometimes I do get tired of 'rowing' my own gears, especially during rush hour. However, on the open road, I love to shift and the Mazda 6 makes it a fun experience. When I have jumped in the other car, which is a smooth riding, smooth cruising Sonata, in less than 48 hours, I'm complaining to myself that this is 'boring'. So I hop back into the Mazda 6 and the grin comes back over my face. The Mazda 6 is slightly smaller than the Sonata, but it has more precise steering, making me feel like I'm driving a go-kart. The steering takes me exactly where I am pointing it. With mixed driving, I get about 33 mpg consistently with the Mazda, which is better than the Sonata's 29 mpg. As for highway traveling, the Hyundai gets me about 33 mpg and the Mazda gets me about 38. However, when I do a long highway trip and keep my speed around 65 mph, I achieved almost 45 mpg in the Mazda. Just below 70 mph cruising, the car can easily do 40 mpg, which is almost hybrid car territory. In putting 16,000 miles on the car, I've spent about $1927.28 on maintenance. It is not because things have broken down, but since I purchased the car used, I wanted all fluids and maintenance as new. Meaning I replaced the coolant, the transaxle fluid, the brake fluid, air and cabin filters, turned the front rotors and put new pads on it. I also replaced the tires and tinted the windows. None of these things had to be done quite yet, but I wanted to have peace of mind and I am now happy. The only thing left to do is add a new android head unit to replace the standard stereo.Compared to my 2004 Infiniti G35 that this car replaced, the Mazda 6 doesn't have the same power and punch, but it does handle better and is more tossable. I've owned Toyotas and Hondas in the past, and they have been the most long-lasting. So far, both the Mazda and the Hyundai have had practical maintenance costs, and the Sonata has only required $1171.96 in maintenance at 74K, which makes me happy. Although it remains to be seen whether the Mazda or the Hyundai will last as long as my previous cars, I'm pleased with their performance so far.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Mazda 6 (automatic). I bought it from a dealership in 2009 with 40K miles on it, and since then I've put another 40K miles on it. Overall, it's been a great car! It came fully loaded with traction control and ABS, although I've found that it's not the best for driving up steep, snow-covered hills in the winter. I did have a crack in the windshield, but thankfully it hasn't leaked into the car. The only other issue I've had is with the display for the CD player, which sometimes loses pixels and doesn't display the volume fully. The V6 engine isn't great on gas, but newer models have better mileage. Thanks for listening to my story!

I bought this car 8 months ago for $28,000 and it has 18,000 miles on it. Before making my purchase, I did my research and test drove several models from Acura, Nissan, Ford, and Mazda. While the good things I read about the car are true - it's stylish, comfortable, and performs well - there are a few things that weren't mentioned in the reviews. For example, the BLIGHTSPOT behind you can be a bit of a challenge, and the headrest and A pillar can obstruct your view, which can be dangerous. Additionally, the traction control can be a bit sensitive, which can cause acceleration to stall when pulling out of a drive. If you have a family, this may not be the best car for you.

Hi there! I purchased my Mazda 6 about a year ago after reading many reviews. While I've enjoyed driving it, there are a few things I've noticed. Firstly, the road noise is quite noticeable. Secondly, I've found the car seats to be a bit uncomfortable. Lastly, while the interior is nice, it doesn't quite match the quality of Toyota or Honda. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the rims as well. The low profile style makes them more prone to bending or cracking, which has happened to me twice already. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably go with a Nissan, Honda, or Toyota instead. Thanks for listening!

I purchased the 2009 M6 last week and unfortunately encountered two minor issues that required attention. The heating system was not functioning properly and required the radiator to be bled. Additionally, the driver-side air vent was not opening due to a broken piece of plastic that was not in stock at the dealership and needed to be ordered. Despite these setbacks, I chose to invest in this car as my previous vehicle, an Accord with 250k km, was becoming too old and required frequent repairs. While I only experienced one minor issue with the Accord in 10 years, I encountered two issues with my Mazda within the first week.

After extensive research, I confidently decided to purchase a 2003 Mazda 6S, which was fully loaded and had a clean record. However, after only 6 months of ownership, I encountered several issues with the car, including blown spark plugs (now fixed with helicoils) and a failed transmission at only 59,000 miles. Despite my diligent care of the vehicle, I am now facing a costly repair of $2K-$3K. While I initially loved the look and feel of the ride, I can no longer recommend this car to others. For those seeking reliability, I suggest considering a Honda or Toyota instead.
