The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.
The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.
First generation (GG1; 2002)
The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).
The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.
Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.
In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.
Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.
In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.
In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

- Summary: The car had a (SUA) Sudden Unintended Acceleration malfunction. No, the car was totaled and towed away. My safety was put at risk as I was slowly pulling into a parking spot, eased my foot onto the brake and this malfunction caused my car to involuntarily jolt into a rampant high speed. It jumped a curb and crashed into a tree. My brake was useless in stopping this runaway vehicle. The only thing that stopped it was that tree! The airbag deployed and I was badly bruised from the airbag. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians or other cars near mine. There were no warning lights or messages before, during or after the accident. It happened so quickly because the tree was only a few feet in front of my car.

- Summary: Cracked Cylinder Head. At 50,400 miles. This is far too common of a problem for such a new car with so few miles. I have seen many similar reports online. My mechanic was baffled. This is a $5k cost AT LEAST. Mazda has a history of not covering these defects. And it IS a defect, not a simple wear and tear issue. A cracked cylinder head can eventually lead to engine failure, so it is dangerous to drive with it. The problem HAS been confirmed by an independent service center. I got a oil pressure warning sign.

- Summary: 2009 Mazda 6 Rear subframe and springs are deemed unsafe due to extreme rusting and corrosion. The vehicle is registered and has been registered in both NY and PA (salt states), however was regularly washed and garage maintained. Vehicle will no longer pass inspection due to this issue and Mazda indicates no recall for the rear at this time and is ignoring that this is a highly prevalent issue. Mazda recalled and acknowledged this issue on these makes/models related to the front; however refuses to acknowledge and repair/recall the issue extending to the rear. The vehicle is in otherwise good shape, and the extreme rusting to the subframe/springs is not consistent with normal wear and tear. This is an extremely prevalent issue arising to these vehicles being ignored by Mazda. Mechanics are indicating the issue is extremely deteriorated and not safe, but that the vehicle is in otherwise good shape and the issue is consistent with faulty parts.

- Summary: The sensors on my alarm system will randomly activate, with alarm going off at 30 second intervals. The problem began approximately 6 months ago. I took the initiative to replace my cars battery, along with the battery in my fab. I really thought that solved my problem, as a first step fix. I began once again to identify the sound of my car alarm in multiple parking lots throughout time. I have been investigating this problem, and have read that this alarm problem has been sited by many Mazda 6 owners. I am the original owner of the 2009 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, and have 67,000 miles driven. I called the Repair Department at my dealership, and was told that it cost $185.00 for just the diagnosis. My auto insurance company policy price is based on using a secured vehicle. Right now I only can leave it unlocked in my garage, otherwise, my vehicle is at risk of being stolen.

- Summary: Hi, car was involved in a small fender bender. Airbags were NOT deployed. However, an error code 19 (B0001) came on the dash related to driver side sensor. If not fixed, airbags will not deploy in case of accident and that puts me and my family in danger. - Summary: The rear cross member / AKA (Rear Subframe) P/N GEG1-28-80X has completely rusted out. The car is no longer safe to drive per a Pennsylvania State inspection. If driven parts of the rear suspension will drop off the car creating a hazard to other motorists and the driver of the car can lose control / mobility causing a traffic accident. Picture the entire rear suspension suddenly collapsing, that is what is going to happen. The Front subframe was subject to a recall. That recall should have included the rear as it is the same material just a few feet away, subject to the same rusting issues. These subframes were not property designed to prevent rust or even withstand a little moisture, as my car has been very well maintained. When I read the online forms this is a flaw in ALL 2009- 2013 Mazda 6's and the sister car the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan. I have opened a case with Mazda USA case #[XXX]. They are going to inspect to confirm my mechanic diagnosis. However they are currently under no obligation to repair and replace the rusted parts but they should be as this should have been replaced when the front subframe recall was performed. After turning the engine off and back on the vehicle operated as normal but later while driving approximately 65 MPH the failure had reoccurred while attempting the pass a semi-truck on the freeway. The check engine warning light had also illuminated and the vehicle was eventually towed to the local dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. - Summary: After getting the recall information about the front crossmember rusting out due to corrosion, I decided to check the rear crossmember on my car. WOW, the rear crossmember is SO much worse than the front one and I’ve read hundreds of similar stories about the exact same thing happening to other Mazda 6 sedans around these model years (2009-2013). The rear crossmember on my car, which supports the entire rear suspension is completely rusted thru in several spots and the lower end links aren’t even attached anymore because the brackets literally fell off and so now both back tires are leaning in at the top. It is very noticeable! Very unsafe to drive! I decided to park this car until a solution is reached with Mazda or the NHTSA on how to deal with this. I don’t know why the front crossmember was recalled but not the rear? There’s only 2 things that are rusted on my car, period…the front & rear crossmembers!

- Summary: The contact owns a 2012 Mazda Mazda6. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the steering wheel began to shake violently, with the low tire pressure warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over to inspect the vehicle and discovered that the front passenger’s side tire had detached from the vehicle. The contact's father was called to the scene and the spare tire was placed on the vehicle. The contact then drove to an independent mechanic where both the front driver’s and front passenger’s side tires were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test was performed; and the diagnostic test determined that the cross member had corroded and caused the tire failure. The contact was then notified that the vehicle was not covered under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V323000 (Structure, Suspension) and that the warranty on the vehicle had expired. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer and was not repaired. The failure mileage was 204,000.

- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V356 and 17V012.

I have owned my Mazda for three years now and it has been an absolute dream. The parchment interior is stunning and always catches the eye of those who see it. The driving experience is unparalleled, with the paddle shifters and Sport mode adding an extra level of excitement. While the mileage is not the best, the Bose sound system more than makes up for it. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. Even a valet mistook it for a Lexus! After 75k miles, the car is still holding up great with a solid 32 mpg overall and no major issues. Although the front rotors did warp at around 30k miles, this was a minor issue that was easily resolved. The only complaint I have is with the 19 inch wheels, which have a known issue of the clearcoat peeling off. Unfortunately, there is no recall or warranty coverage for this issue, and it will cost me close to 1k bucks to either have these wheels refinished or replace them. Despite this, I still highly recommend Mazda as a brand and would consider purchasing another one in the future.

I bought my Mazda 6 hatchback new in 2008 and did a lot of research before deciding to buy it. It has everything I need, with top-notch comfort and a performance rating of 10. The touring trim level is very well put together, and between the hatch and the fold-down seats, it's amazing what you can fit in this car. I've owned many Hondas and Toyotas, and I can say that the reliability is just as good as those brands, with even better interiors. If you're looking for something unique, Mazda is the way to go. Personally, I'll take two scoops of 'Zoom Zoom' over vanilla any day!

I recently traded in my 08' Avalanche for a car with better gas mileage (14.7 avg). While searching for a new car, I came across a 2010 M6 with only one owner and 66k on the clock. I have to say, the first time I drove it, I was thoroughly impressed. As a 6'3 spirited driver, this car really moves! It easily outperforms my previous car, an 03 Nissan Altima 3.5. Although the ride is a bit firm, I love feeling connected to the car. Long drives are now enjoyable again. With the improved gas mileage (23.5), I am finding new places to go and I love the ability to switch gears in Manual mode (6 gears to choose from). Unlike my Nissan, the Mazda has no torque steer. I never feel like I am pushing the car too hard, as it seems to accommodate any driving mood I am in. It can handle groceries and windy roads with athletic agility. I really enjoy the M6, and it was priced much lower than most cars but outruns them all. If you can get the V6, snatch it up! UPDATE 6/24/20: Still rolling as noted above. I have upgraded the brakes, tires, and had the spark plugs changed at 75k. She still performs well and is fun to drive. I have no complaints.

When someone spends $28,000 on a new car with a 36-month warranty, they expect the dealer and manufacturer to honor that warranty. However, despite taking great care of my car, with only 5200 miles on it, it began rusting in multiple places under the hood. It's disappointing to see rust in an area that is protected under the hood. When I took it to the dealer, they gave me excuses, blaming me for not properly maintaining the car and not keeping it in a garage all the time. It's not practical to keep the car in the garage all the time. This is not a matter of improper maintenance on my part. This is a matter of the car not being designed properly since it's already rusting in the second year. It's also a failure of the dealer to be honest. I'm having to deal with the stress and frustration of a poorly built car, take time off from work, wait 4 1/2 hours at the service center only to be refused getting the rust fixed, and the service advisor Emmanuel Cruz insulted me by blaming me for failing to maintain the car properly. Mazda failed to build the car properly, and the dealer is attempting to skirt their responsibility for fixing the car while under warranty. Non-moving parts under the hood, such as the radiator frame and other areas, should not be rusting so soon, before 5000 miles even! This is evidence of the car not being built properly. If the car is already rusting in the second year, how bad will it be rusting if the car even makes it to 5 or 10 years? It's frustrating to buy a poorly built car, but it's even worse when the dealer won't stand behind the products it sells. I'm disappointed that I have to file complaints online and pay to hire a lawyer to force the dealer and Mazda to honor the warranty. I relied on the warranty before buying the car. If I knew they would refuse to honor the warranty, I never would have bought the car.Offering a worthless warranty can be frustrating and misleading for customers. If you purchase a Mazda and experience rusting before even reaching 5000 miles, it can be disheartening when the dealer refuses to honor the warranty and instead blames you for improper maintenance. I bought my Mazda 6 used and it was perfect... At first. However, I did experience some issues with the cd player, which only played select cds and ruined some of my favorite ones. Additionally, I had some trouble with the interior fabric, which seemed to stain easily and was difficult to clean. I also noticed some occasional slipping in the transmission, which was hard to pinpoint. Unfortunately, these issues escalated over time, leading to the check engine light staying on, problems with the wiring system, getting stuck in 3rd gear, and even stalling out. While I loved my car at first, these issues have made me hesitant to consider another Mazda in the future.

I recently purchased a used 2010 Mazda 6 with around 44,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I noticed that the tail light lenses were melting at around 48,000 miles, despite having stock bulbs. When I brought this to the attention of the dealership, they were willing to replace the tail lights for $350, but I felt that this was an issue that should not have occurred so soon. Despite escalating the issue up the Mazda Corporate ladder, I was unable to find a satisfactory resolution. However, after doing some research, I discovered that there was a service bulletin (SB-10033969-2790) indicating that 2009/10 Mazda 6 models might experience heat deformation of the lens in warm climates. I am disappointed that this issue was not disclosed to me earlier, and I hope that Mazda will take steps to address this issue for their customers in the future.
