The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.

The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.

First generation (GG1; 2002)

The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).

The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.

Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.

In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.

Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.

In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.

In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

Common 2019 Mazda Mazda6 problems

Common Problems with the Mazda Mazda6 2019

  1. Jerking on slow speeds and after switching gears

Some owners of the 2019 Mazda 6 have reported experiencing jerks on slow speeds and after switching gears. These jerks are described as light hiccups at walking pace, particularly during traffic jams. The car is said to experience around 2-4 instances of these hiccups when starting and applying light throttle. More significant jerks have also been reported when starting from a traffic light and driving over tram tracks. The car's jerking is more pronounced, resembling the feeling you get when you haven't given enough throttle to a manual transmission car, causing it to stall with convulsions.

  1. Intermittent problems with the ECU

A 2019 Mazda 6 owner reported intermittent problems with the ECU right from the start. The car had been bought at the end of 2019, and the owner started experiencing issues with the dash lights going out. The dealership was unable to replicate the problem, and it was listed as a false report. However, the car had a history of being in a salvage yard, with various parts being dismantled and returned to the dealership. It was rebuilt and given another salvage title, which was reported stolen but later verified as not stolen. The car's ECU was not responding to key fob programming, and the battery was dead. When jumper cables were connected, the positive side of the Mazda 6 started smoking slightly.

  1. Reliability issues

Consumer Reports provides reliability information for the 2019 Mazda 6, based on extensive survey data and expert technical knowledge. The reliability of a car indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. The reliability history charts give a rundown on how used vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system.

  1. Recalls

Kelley Blue Book reports that the 2019 Mazda 6 may be affected by recalls. Recalls may not affect every vehicle of the same year, make, and model. It is essential to use your VIN or license plate to find out if your car is affected by any recalls.

In conclusion, while the 2019 Mazda 6 is generally a reliable car, some owners have reported experiencing jerks on slow speeds and after switching gears. Additionally, some intermittent problems with the ECU have been reported, which may require further investigation. It is essential to check for any recalls that may affect your car and ensure that it is regularly serviced and maintained to ensure its reliability and longevity.

Negative 2019 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Leif Homenick 2024-11-02

I had the opportunity to test drive a 2018 Mazda6 Grand Touring loaner from the dealer while my Mazda3 was in for service. Here's my review of the car after driving it through a variety of conditions. Compared to the 3 or even older generations of the 6, the new 6 is slightly heavier and the handling is not as sharp. However, the car is stylish and nicely equipped both inside and out. The Grand Touring trim on the 6 is actually the mid-level trim, but it hits the sweet spot with features like the turbo engine, LED lights, moonroof, navigation, Bose stereo, and more, all while saving thousands compared to higher trims. The new turbo 2.5L engine borrowed from the CX-9 provides great low-end torque and acceleration. I averaged 27MPG, which seems about right for a car in this class. If I owned this car, I would definitely swap the Falken tires Mazda uses for different rubber, which would probably improve the ride as well. Overall, it was a great experience driving the Mazda6 Grand Touring and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish and well-equipped car.

Positive 2019 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Skylar Lowe 2025-03-20

I've owned my Mazda 6 Signature for 12,000 miles now and I must say, I'm very pleased with it! As an older motor head, I've come full circle. There was a time when all that mattered to me was performance and handling, but now I want luxury and still some performance and handling. Before they added the turbo to the line-up, I drove several Mazda 6's and found them to be quite boring. I was worried that this new model would have the turbo stuffed in and just be a handling and traction mess, but I was completely wrong. Mazda updated so much of the chassis design, suspension, computer programming, etc. that this car handles great! They added a ton of NVH materials underneath and the interior is an 8 out of 10. The only reason it's not a 10 out of 10 is that I feel the display screen and function is outdated and clunky. This midsize sedan is what I would call entry-level luxury, with heated/cooled seats in the front and back, leather and real wood doors and dash, curve adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, 360 camera, and more. I couldn't find another midsize sedan with the features this car has for under $46k. Mazda also did something else I love. You can use regular unleaded and get about 225hp and 310ftlbs of torque or premium and get 250hp and pretty much the same torque. Frankly, I find it just great on regular unleaded. The car is set up for low RPM power and feels like it has a ton of power in the normal driving range. If you feel the need to constantly shut off traction control, throw it in manual and use the paddle shifters (yep, it has paddle shifters), and run it up to redline, then by all means throw in super unleaded and enjoy the 25 extra ponies. My only complaint on the power/traction is that if you mash on it off the line, you will spin the tires, but that is the trade-off you make for a low RPM high torque design, and I feel like Mazda could not have tuned this any better.I really appreciate one thing that Mazda did differently with this car compared to most others in its class (Honda, Toyota, Kia, and some Fords). The computer assist in this car is incredible when you push its handling. Unlike other cars that immediately cut the fuel as soon as the computer detects any tire slip, either off the line or during high-speed turns, the Mazda 6 does not. It feels like it gradually reduces the power just enough to regain traction without compromising the feel. Overall, I find it hard to come up with any cons for this car, especially considering what it is intended to be. Although I mentioned earlier that the display seems dated and has not been updated in 2-3 years, the updates Mazda made to the luxury and driving experience are impressive and spot on.

I smile every time I look at it. I got the Sport, so I paid a modest price for so much car. When I test drove it, there were four of us in the car, including me at 215lb, the sales guy at around 250lbs, and two ladies. I merged at a fast pace into a mess of traffic, which made the sales guy tense up noticeably, but the car had no issues weaving and getting up to speed quickly. I get 33 mpg because it's just me commuting to work. The car handles my horribly muddy, cratered, mile-long dirt drive without an issue, thanks to its plenty of ground clearance. My 6'-1' 50-year-old body has enough leg and headroom, though the seats could be wider for me. The pedal placement is perfect, unlike most cars I tested. The ride is very quiet and comfortable when I'm cruising. I now look forward to my commute, and I plan my route to include curves. Heavy traffic is a breeze to weave in and out. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

  3. Elmore Gulgowski 2025-02-25

I have the base Sport version of the 2018 Mazda 6. From what I have heard from other drivers, it stands above the competition in terms of reliability. Even though the base version doesn't have all the fancy tech, it still offers a comfortable and stylish ride at an affordable price. The interior of the car is elegantly simple, with leather trim and cloth seats that don't disappoint. The exterior has a menacing look that some people, myself included, crave. For the price, you're getting a top-of-the-line vehicle that looks great both inside and out. Performance-wise, the car handles wonderfully, although it lacks the kick you might see with the grand touring or signature versions. Overall, as a recent college graduate who got this Mazda 6 as their first car, I would recommend it 10/10 times! If it's in your budget, I would suggest going for the signature or grand touring with all the added features. But if you're just looking for a stylish, comfortable, reliable, and fun drive (minus the lack of HP), then the 2018 Mazda 6 is the car for you!

  4. Loy Boyer 2025-02-06

UPDATE: Hi there! I've now had my Mazda 6 Signature trim car for six months, and I'm still overall very pleased with it. For the price, it's superb! I've changed and lowered a few of my scores, but I wanted to let you know that the acceleration is very good. However, it's not a sports sedan, so don't expect it to be. The back-up camera works fine, but Mazda does need to improve the resolution on future models. I wish it had active park assist as an option that actually parks the car for you, but it does have the basic park assist with back-up and front sensors. I got the Android Auto update for the car, and it's very good. However, I find myself using the standard Mazda interface more than Android Auto. I prefer the ease of set up and configuration with the standard Mazda infotainment system more than Android Auto. Pandora looks and interfaces better with the standard Mazda system, and I like the navigation system better on the Mazda. I typically now only use Android Auto when I'm taking a trip to a completely unknown location, since I think Google Maps does a better job with traffic and updates than the Mazda system. The Bose sound system is EXCELLENT! I had a Harman Kardon system in the BMW 2 series I traded in for this car that I paid extra for, and the Bose sound system blows it away. It's one of the better sounding systems I've experienced in a car. It's extremely clear with good bass. I have no regrets buying this car, and I'll probably purchase again in the future if they continue to refine and update this model. I just wanted to share my thoughts with you and let you know that I'm very impressed with this vehicle. I traded in a BMW for this car, and I'm very pleased with the overall quality, fit and finish. The interior, in my opinion, is the high point with the Napa leather, wood trim and chrome touches. This car definitely looks and feels way more expensive than the $35,000 sticker price. I was a little worried about the infotainment system after reading various reviews, but I actually like the system!I was able to easily sync Pandora and Stitcher radio apps with the car's system and my phone. My contacts and messages also synced without any issues. I really like the navigation system and I'm excited for the upcoming Android Auto update. However, the current system is still good enough for me. The turbo engine provides smooth and lively acceleration, and the ride quality is excellent. Overall, this is a great car and offers excellent value.

  5. Kayden Turcotte 2025-02-04

I recently purchased a Mazda 6 after owning a Miata and a Mazda 3. I was specifically looking for a car that was quiet and had a bit more power, which is why I opted for the 2.5L turbo engine. The interior is a significant improvement from the Mazda 3, with heated and cooled seats and a much larger trunk. The ride is also very smooth. While it may not be the sportiest car out there, it's not a boat either. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and have no regrets. The turbo engine is extremely nice, with plenty of torque for easy overtaking on the highway. The car is rated at 27mpg highway, but I can easily get 30mpg or so. On high octane fuel, my mixed fuel mileage is a consistent 27mpg. As of November 2020, my opinion remains the same - the Mazda 6 is a great buy for the price and what you get.
