2004 Mazda Mazda6 problems
The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.
The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.
First generation (GG1; 2002)
The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).
The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.
Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.
In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.
Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.
In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.
In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

Common 2004 Mazda Mazda6 problems
The Mazda 6, produced from 2003 to 2008, is known for its sporty mid-size design and great driving experience, especially on the highway. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported, particularly with the 2004 model.
One of the most significant issues is engine failure, which has been reported by many 2004 Mazda 6 owners. The average mileage for engine failure is 98,000 miles, and it is the most common problem with this model year. The cause of the engine failure is not clear, with some owners reporting a knocking sound before the failure, while others say it failed without warning. Mechanics have not been able to identify a specific cause of the engine failure, making it a particularly challenging problem to diagnose and prevent.
Another common problem with the 2004 Mazda 6 is transmission issues. These problems are not uncommon in the early models, and it may be a good idea to avoid the 2003 model altogether. Transmission fluid should be changed if it becomes dark and dirty. In a V6 engine, misfire can be caused by bad ignition coils, and replacing all the spark plugs if they are old is recommended if one of the coils fails. Replacing front ignition coils is easy, but replacing rear ignition coils can take up to two hours of labor because the intake manifold must be removed.
A faulty or clogged purge valve (solenoid) can also cause the Check Engine light to come on, with the trouble code P0446. The purge valve is easy to replace and not very expensive. Oil leaks are common in a V6 engine, and completely eliminating all the leaks can be quite expensive. It is recommended to start by replacing the valve cover gaskets. Coolant leaks from various plastic outlets are also not uncommon, and some plastic cooling system pipes become brittle with age and can break easily. It is a good idea to keep an eye on the coolant level in the expansion tank under the hood and fix any leak before it becomes a bigger problem.
In some 2006 and 2007 Mazda 6 models, the passenger side window might stop working after the battery has been disconnected or drained. The power window initialization procedure must be performed to fix this issue. The clunking or popping felt in the steering wheel could be caused by lack of lubrication in the intermediate steering shaft, and there was a technical service bulletin (TSB) on this issue, with the repair being very simple.
In summary, while the Mazda 6 is known for its sporty design and great driving experience, there are some common problems that owners have reported, particularly with the 2004 model. These include engine failure, transmission issues, faulty or clogged purge valve (solenoid), oil leaks, coolant leaks, and window and steering wheel problems. It is recommended to be aware of these issues and take preventative measures to avoid them, particularly with the 2004 model year.
What are common problems with a 2004 Mazda 6?
2004 Mazda 6 idle problems are very common and widely reported. Some owners have reported that its RPM may suddenly become unstable while stopping at traffic lights. There could be many causes for this issue, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, and vacuum leaks.
Is Mazda 6 2004 reliable?
The average rating is a 3.7 out of 5 stars. The 2004 Mazda 6 Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5. It ranks 5th out of 32 for all car brands.
What is the common problem of Mazda 6?
What are the most common problems with a used Mazda 6 saloon? On the whole, owners seem to have high praise for their Mazda 6s, but the 6 can be quite hard on its brake discs, which can lead to vibration under braking. If you detect this on a test drive, it will need a new set of brake discs and pads to sort.
How many miles does a 2004 Mazda 6 last?

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-01
- VIN: 1YVFP84C445
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I WANT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT MY RECALL NOT BEING REPLACED IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. GOING ON 11 MONTHS, STILL NO SOLUTION, AND I WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE WITH A PASSENGER UNTIL IT GETS FIXED. RIDICULOUS. AIRBAGS WERE RECALLED IN DECEMBER 2015. IN JANUARY 2016 I CALLED MAZDA TO GET THIS SCHEDULED AND WENT IN LATE FEBRUARY ONCE THE PARTS CAME IN. I WAS TOLD BOTH MY DRIVER AND PASSENGER AIRBAG WOULD BE REPLACED THAT DAY. WHEN I PICKED UP MY CAR I WAS TOLD ONLY THE DRIVERS SIDE HAD BEEN DONE AND I'D BE CONTACTED ABOUT THE PASSENGER SIDE SOON. ONE MONTH LATER I GET A CALL SAYING MY OTHER AIRBAG PART WAS IN. I CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND THEN WAS TOLD, NO WAIT, IT WASN'T. A FEW MONTHS LATER I RECEIVED A CALL CONFIRMING MY APPOINTMENT FOR MY AIRBAG. GREAT BUT I DIDN'T HAVE AN APPOINTMENT. I CALLED AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT BUT WOULD LOOK IN TO IT. 3 DAYS LATER I WAS CALLED AGAIN AND SAID MY PART WAS IN TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. SO I DID. I SKIPPED WORK TO BRING MY CAR IN, SHOW UP, AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO PART AND THERE NEVER WAS. I WAS TOLD THE PART WASN'T EVEN AVAILABLE AND NOT TO DRIVE MY CAR WITH A PASSENGER UNTIL ITS FIXED. I THEN RECEIVED CALLS FROM MAZDA'S CHICAGO OFFICE AND LETTER IN THE MAIL STATING INDEED, PARTS WEREN'T AVAILABLE YET AND REITERATED NOT TO DRIVE WITH A PASSENGER UNTIL ITS FIXED. THAT WAS OVER 4 MONTHS AGO AT THIS POINT. IT'S ABSURD THAT A RECALL THAT CAN SEVERELY INJURE MYSELF OR MY PASSENGERS HAS TAKEN 11 MONTHS WITH NO SOLUTION. AND TO BE TOLD "DON'T DRIVE WITH A PASSENGER" IS EVEN MORE ABSURD. I USE MY CAR FOR DAY TO DAY LIFE, THAT IS NOT AN OPTION. I JUST WANT MY RECALL FIXED. I KNOW MANY PEOPLE THAT HAD BOTH THEIR SIDES FIXED, WHY IS MINE TAKING 11 MONTHS AN COUNTING WITH MULTIPLE TIMES BEING SCREWED AROUND AND OVER 4 MONTHS OF SILENCE NOW? IF SOMEONE GETS HURT, I'M SUING THE [XXX] OUT EVERYONE. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-04-26
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 1YVHP84D045
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: THE V6 MOTOR IN MY MAZDA 6S HAS BEEN LEAKING OIL FOR ALMOST 10 OF THE 12 YEARS I'VE OWNED IT. THE OIL LEAKS OUT OF THE FAULTY SEALS ON THE TIMING CHAIN COVER IN FRONT OF THE PASSENGER, AND THE OIL DROPS ONTO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THIS OIL VAPORIZES AND THAT VAPOR ENTERS THE CABIN IN SLOW SPEED DRIVING AND WHEN STOPPED AT INTERSECTIONS. I COMPLAINED ABOUT A BURNING OIL SMELL MANY TIMES WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND THE MAZDA SERVICE TECHS ALWAYS PRETENDED LIKE THEY DIDN'T FIND ANY PROBLEM. YEARS DOWN THE ROAD, I AM FINDING THIS IS A RAMPANT PROBLEM WITH ALL FORD AND MAZDA CARS AND SUVS WITH THIS "DURATEC" 3.0 V6 WHICH WAS MADE BY FORD. IT IS INSTALLED IN MANY FORD, MERCURY AND MAZDA VEHICLES. I CARRY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER WITH ME IN THE EVENT I HAVE AN UNDER HOOD FIRE, AND I'M VERY WORRIED ABOUT MY HEALTH AFTER ALL THESE YEARS OF BREATHING THIS VAPOR. THE COST TO REPAIR THIS SEAL FAILURE IS DAUNTING. I HOPE MHTSA CAN SEE THAT FORD HAS BEEN COVERING UP THIS DEFECT, ENDANGERING LIVES AND THE HEALTH OF DRIVERS AS WELL AS CREATING A TOUGH FINANCIAL BURDEN ON THE OWNERS TO FIX THE ISSUE. I GAVE A DATE ON THE FORM BELOW, SINCE IT WAS REQUIRED, BUT THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 2006 OR SO.

2004 Mazda Mazda6 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2004 Mazda Mazda6.
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Park It: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2004-2005 MPV, 2004 RX-8, and 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 vehicles. These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 2618F. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 13V130, 14V362, 14V773 and 15V869.

- Summary: Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 and 2004 MPV vehicles nationwide. Mazda is also recalling 2005-2006 MPV vehicles in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. On July 9, 2019 this recall was expanded to include certain 2004-2011 RX-8 vehicles that were previously recalled under 16V-354 but have not yet been repaired. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these passenger air bag inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

My family has owned this car for its entire lifespan and I must say, it has been an amazing ride. The 2004 Mazda 6 v6 was bought new with top trim level by my dad and it has never had engine or transmission problems. We have only had to do standard maintenance and a few airbag recalls. We've replaced the oil every 6k miles, replaced the brakes every 40k miles, and done all the other maintenance needed, and the car just hums along perfectly. When standard maintenance requires replacing parts, like the brake pads, rotors, and calipers, it can be expensive, but they do seem to last longer than other vehicles. I absolutely love this car! The tach never exceeds 3000 when driving normally, but you can kick it faster than new cars if you need to. All of the horses have stayed in the engine over the 16 years we've had this car. We've accrued some body damage to the car over the years, but the incredible body design of the car makes it beautiful. No other car from the era holds up in looks, but the Mazda 6 is still a good looking car. The only real downside is the mileage. We get 23.4 mpg in normal driving, and 26ish mpg on a highway (measuring between full fills and mileage). Still, for a car from that era with 16 years in the engine, that isn't bad. The mileage will drop significantly in winter and if you leave an oil change waiting too long (my brother, before I got it, let it go 8k miles without a change; it was down to 16mpg in winter driving). The brakes are amazing. You can slam them and stop nice and quick when you have to. I've avoided a few bad accidents thanks to them. Finally, the car has only just started rusting this year, which is remarkable considering we haven't been particularly careful in preventing rust. At 160k miles, 16 years, this car is still going strong and I'm grateful for all the memories it has given us.

Your Mazda6 is cool to drive and has a great sports package style that receives many compliments. The handling is good and the car is comfortable. The trunk has a good amount of space and the acceleration is good when in the higher gears. However, I understand your concern about the quality of the transmission as you have had problems changing gears in both the manual and auto modes. It could be that you are still getting used to the sportamatic or there may be an actual problem. Nonetheless, it is still a great car!

After two months of research, I'm so happy with my choice! The 5-speed was a bit hard to find, but definitely worth it - as long as you don't sit in traffic. The engine runs so smoothly and there are so many great features. The only minor issues are a bolt, or something, rolling around in the console when I turn and a loose hook for the cargo barrier. Overall, it's an amazing value and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something practical yet sporty.

Hi there! I wanted to share that I have a 2004 wagon with 230,000 miles on it and it's still running like new! The torque is still going strong. The only downside for me is the interior fabric, which looks a bit cheap. However, it's great for hauling stuff and has a lot of room when you fold the next row seat. Overall, it's an amazing car!

With the perfect blend between Japanese technology and European design, the Mazda 6 is one of the best buys around. Mazda does a great job of giving you a lot of car for the money. If you consider the fun-to-drive factor, ride and handling, Mazda is the clear-cut winner.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Mazda 6 (automatic). I bought it from a dealership in 2009 with 40K miles on it, and since then I've put another 40K miles on it. Overall, it's been a great car! It came fully loaded with traction control and ABS, although I've found that it's not the best for driving up steep, snow-covered hills in the winter. I did have a crack in the windshield, but thankfully it hasn't leaked into the car. The only other issue I've had is with the display for the CD player, which sometimes loses pixels and doesn't display the volume fully. The V6 engine isn't great on gas, but newer models have better mileage. Thanks for listening to my story!

Originally unhappy due to build quality and annoyed by intermittent rattles in the dash. However, after replacing the original Michelins (which only lasted 33k miles!) with Hankooks, the ride improved significantly. The car still handles well without jarring your teeth loose on every pothole. With about 58K miles on the clock, I have only had to replace the front brakes, tires, a battery, and perform regular oil changes every 3k miles. This car runs like a champ and still looks good. Since they're not going to offer the new 6 in a wagon, I'm going to hang onto this thing - nothing else out there tempts me yet. This is the first car I've had that I like more as time goes on. I am confident that this car will continue to serve me well for years to come.

I purchased this car at an auction two months ago for $3000. It had 196000km on it, which is about 129k miles. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car, such as the oil disappearing quickly and not knowing where it was going. After spending around $2000 on repairs, new tires, and rims, I discovered that the engine was beyond repair. The piston rings were worn out, which caused the car to burn oil rapidly. This was due to the catalytic converter melting and blocking the exhaust, creating excessive back pressure. Additionally, the EGR valve was recirculating exhaust gases and other particles into the engine, which also caused damage. It's disappointing that Mazda's design was not up to par.

This car is amazing! While some of the interior may feel a bit cheap and the comfort levels could be improved, it's important to note that this car is cheaper than all of its rivals and still drives even better. The 220 bhp 3.0 V6 engine provides fantastic performance, sometimes making it hard to realize just how fast you're going. While the manual mode may be a bit jerky and dim-witted, and doesn't auto blip on the down shifts, both down shifts and up shifts are still impressive. The fuel economy may not be the best, averaging only 17.4 mpg, but it's worth noting that I tend to drive in a more spirited manner. If you're looking for better fuel economy, I recommend the 4 cylinder model, which weighs less, gets better mpg, and probably handles better. In short, this car is great and definitely worth buying!

I bought the new 6 last month on March first and unfortunately, it has been in the shop 5 times now for the same reason. Whenever I turn the steering wheel, the car's front squeals! After some research, I found out that mine is one of about a dozen that have been reported to do this. Additionally, a secretary let it slip that they are having problems with shimmy on the 6. Therefore, I would advise against buying it. Although it looks great, it is an overpriced piece of junk.
