2017 Mazda Mazda6 problems
The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.
The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.
First generation (GG1; 2002)
The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).
The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.
Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.
In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.
Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.
In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.
In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
- VIN: JM1GL1X52H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: From the information I have gathered, this is a common issue affecting many Mazdas ranging from 2014 to 2018. The issue is what the Mazda Community calls "Ghost touch" Our infotainment screens will start clicking buttons on its own including increasing the volume or switching screens. Additionally songs will switched. Why is this a safety hazard? This causes a distraction that can occur at any moment. For instance, if you are driving down the highway and all of a sudden your volume goes up to an unpleasant volume, your natural reaction is to turn down the volume, causing a distraction. Same can be said about song switching or screen repeatedly changing.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
- VIN: JM1GL1X58H1

- Summary: The infotainment system randomly changes screens, places calls, alters routes while vehicle is in use. It makes for a dangerous distraction while driving.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
- VIN: JM1GL1W52H1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The issue I'm experiencing seems to be common, and is called the "infotainment ghost touch screen issue" The electric screen that shows maps, radio stations, chapters in books I'm listening to, driving directions, etc. starts fluctuating wildly whenever I'm approaching traffic lights. This causes a series of loud beeps and screen fluctuations that are not only distracting but startling --especially if I'm not listening to the radio and the car is quiet. The warranty on the electronic screen has expired but the car is in perfect shape other than this issue (which Mazda knows about). The screen is very expensive to fix or replace. Recently, when the infotainment screen fluctuates the mileage and other dashboard screens start fluctuating as well; they're in my line of vision and are distracting and therefore dangerous, especially on Miami's already dangerous highways. I'd like to bring the car to the Mazda dealership and have this issue fixed without incurring a cost.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
- VIN: JM1GL1V57H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My display infotainment system is acting weird and when I am driving all of a sudden it auto touches and changing brightness, increasing volume, changing tracks when playing music. It's very distracting and pose a serious safety risk. When I looked on the internet, there are a lot of people who also posting about the same issue. Please consider this as priority and fix it.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31
- VIN: JM1GL1V51H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The infotainment system randomly changes the screen very rapidly, "ghosting". The screen didn't and brightens very rapidly while driving, going from night to day modes or vice versa even though I set it on auto mode. The worst is that it randomly makes calls to people in my contact list. This can very easily cause a crash.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-24
- VIN: JM1GL1W5XH1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The infotainment system on my car randomly repeatedly and frequently registers inputs when I am not making any. This has happened more times than I can count over the past several years. It will call people in my contacts, change settings on my car including safety settings, it will blast the volume, turn the volume all the way down, etc. This causes me to repeatedly take my eyes off the road to undo all of the unwarranted inputs which is a safety concern and has almost caused an accident at least once. There is an open recall for model years 2014 to 2016 for this exact issue. I am not sure why there is no 2017 recall since this is the exact same problem of "ghost touch" in previous model years.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-28
- VIN: JM1GL1V54H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My infotainment center experiences a ghost touch, typically in hot weather, where it just randomly starts pressing buttons on the touch screen, increases volume, hits play/pause over and over again. It is VERY distracting when it occurs while I’m driving
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-02
- VIN: JM1GL1X56H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Touch screen has ghosting effects, and automatically starts disabling safety and alert systems, calling random people, playing music, muting calls, navigating to random places, etc. without any input from the user. Mazda has an existing service bulletin for this issue that includes the Mazda 6 (Mazda SA-001/23) but the dealer says it’s not covered by any recall and that I need to pay nearly $3,000 to get it fixed.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
- VIN: JM1GL1V52H1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 2017 Mazda 6 with the dreaded "ghost touch" on the infotainment system. Driving along, the screen freaks out, volume goes up, station changes, screen goes almost black, bass goes up, fader goes to back... Very disappointing that Mazda knows about the problem and continues to build cars with this issue. Why only recall 2014-2016 Mazda 3's when it's happening across all models and into the 2020 models? Won't buy a Mazda again.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-19
- VIN: JM1GL1W59H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 2017 Mazda6 Infotainment System also found in Mazda CX-5. Known as "Ghost Touch," it is a known issue acknowledged by the company and dealerships. Available for inspection upon request. The Infotainment system controls navigation, ADAS heads up navigation, illumination of instruments and other driver instrumentation and safety warning systems. Above a set speed the screen is NOT a touch screen. When the car slows below a preset speed or is stopped, the display screen becomes a touch screen. The screen will then randomly and intermittently begin to reset itself, changing between and altering settings. This was repaired by Mazda on pre-2016 models, but Mazda declined on 2017-2020 models. This has the potential of causing accidents by making instrumentation unreadable, random dialing bluetooth phone connections, etc. As stated search for "Ghost touch Mazda" and you will find many references and complaints. The problem is ongoing since 2021. The component has apparently been upgraded but will cost 700+ to repair.
SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-07
- VIN: JM1GL1V5XH1
- Components: SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Display screen has developed the common “spider web cracking” with my 2017 Mazda 6. There has been no accident on my vehicle and it is causing issues with being able to clearly see what is showing. My driver seat “heated seat” has melted the lower back leather material. The heating element doesn’t heat the bottom of the seat and just the lower back part. It has caused the leather to melt
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- VIN: JM1GL1U50H1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The infotainment system will have repeated ghost touches rendering the screen virtually useless. This is a known issue that mazda is not repairing and they are making the car owner responsible on paying for the fix of their broken product.
LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-07
- VIN: JM1GL1X52H1
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Mazda 6's from 2017 have a known, reported defect that causes the touch screen to "ghost touch" and randomly enter into the car's menus and change settings, dial phone numbers, delete entries, etc. There is a service bulletin issued to replace the touchscreen cover/lens but Mazda does not honor this repair for cars out of warranty and want to charge customers for this repair. This is a potential liability since the car can change safety settings that a driver is accustomed and relies on without their knowledge possibly resulting in serious injury or death.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-18
- VIN: JM1GL1V57H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The vehicles infotainment system has what is called ghost touches. Which is very distracting while driving the vehicle. This is a common issue Mazda does not seem to have a recall for. The infotainment system behave erratically, and won't allow the user to change settings in the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-22
- VIN: JM1GL1V52H1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I’ve had my 2017 Mazda6 for 2 years and first had an issue when the vehicle could not detect the key fob was near. A Mazda dealership at that time could not resolve the issue. Now at times the vehicle won’t start unless i physically hover the key fob over the push to start button. I continued with the purchase and now 2 years in I’ve had so many issues with the infotainment screen acting insane, known as “ghost touching”. When coming to a stop the screen will start clicking around to different screen settings on the monitor. It’s incredibly frustrating and unsafe trying to resolve this issue in the middle of Dallas traffic. Earlier this year I had to make 6 hour trip up north and cruise control caused an issue the entire ride there. When cruise control was turned on the vehicle would start to accelerate on its own. I’m familiar with cruise control and how to use it. No button to increase speed or gas were used to increase the speed at that time, and when I tried to decrease speed from the steering wheel, the button would not work, only working when the break was pressed. Last I checked, cruise control is no longer working in the vehicle. I am terrified to learn of the other issues that could come of the electrical issue I’m having with the car. The electrical issues reported from myself and others need to be a cause for a concern and a recall NEEDS to happen!! I have also noticed the collision avoidance light will turn on and off, I’m not sure if this is related to the above issues but am certain that the key fob light that stays on, never shutting off is related. Please help!!

- Summary: For the last 2 yrs the screen and radio volume and turned up loudly on it's on while driving and causes a severe distraction. Also the channels change on it's own and beep. The screen changes from light to dark mode on it's own and the Bluetooth cuts out while I'm on the phone or it calls someone on my contact list on it's own. It's caused me to be distracted and almost have accidents because it doesn't stop. This is an ongoing problem with Mazda owners and should be recalled due to safety concerns There was a recall on older models with the same type of issue. . It's gotten much worse lately and I've just taken it to the Mazda dealer. They call a Ghost touch and they said Mazda is aware of the problem. There has also been reports on the BBB website about similiar issues. I called Mazda and they opened a case on it. The Case # is 00104322. The Mazda dealer said it would cost over $600 to fix and the screen needs to be replaced

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
- VIN: JM1GL1V51H1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My "infotainment" system was experiencing ghost touching. In other words, the touch screen in the car that controls everything from radio to bluetooth to settings for safety features such as braking assist and automatic sensor wipers would completely go crazy and select/unselect features in the touchscreen. Sometimes it was one touch at a time (ie, change the radio station). Over time, and the more humid it was outside, I would have drives where every time the car was under 10mph, the touchscreen would go berserk. The car does have a feature where you cannot change settings when the car is going faster than 10mph, so thankfully this could not happen continuously. I had many instances where I would be braking to stop at a red light and the volume of the radio would go up so high that you would immediately cover your ears. (I keep radio at volume 10-15 and go to 30 when I want it really loud, it would go to 50 or more by itself). Obviously this is not good when you are at 10mph and still coming to a stop with a car in front of you. The first time it happened, I was so unaware that I immediately slammed on the brakes to a complete stop and the car behind me barely missed hitting me. Other instances involved the ghost touching turning off the "brake assist" option in the settings and turning off the "rain sensing wipers" feature all while driving. I would have to wait until my destination, then turn off the car and then turn back on to turn these safety features back on for the next drive. Obviously this is not good safety, when these safety features turn off during a drive. It got to the point I would not drive my kids in the car anymore. The Mazda dealer did not understand what was happening, but a quick Google search shows this issue for 2017 Mazda 6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3. Thats alot of cars and the only fix is to replace the touchscreen. I replaced mine in the summer of 2021 and paid well over $900. This needs to be recalled to prevent future issues for owners.

- Summary: Please see https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10166895-0001.pdf PARTS AND WARRANTY INFORMATION SSPB6 I, and many other Mazda6 owners, have this exact problem which prevents cell phones from being able to connect to the car's Bluetooth. As a result, drivers can not follow the law, i.e. All Maryland drivers are prohibited from using a Cell Phone without a Hands Free Device while operating a motor vehicle. This impacts my safety and the safety of others. On 8/12/21 Mazda referred to this as GHOST TOUCH and quoted $1,250 to fix it. I believe Mazda should cover this repair as they did with the Mazda3's. Can you please help me?
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-23
- VIN: JM1GL1V57H1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have a 2017 Mazda 6 that has an extremely loud engine. I have taken it in and I’m told the car is fine but I can feel the engine knocking through the pedal as I drive. The sound has gotten louder over time and it’s not getting any better. I’ve had some belts change and keep up my regular maintenance and Mazda can’t seem to figure out what the issue is. I have friends with the same model and their engine sounds normal.

- Summary: Similar to the recall on the 2016-2016 Mazda6, the 2017 Mazda 6 has a touch screen issue (ghost touch). Mazda MUST issue a SSP for this vehicle. It is unacceptable that Mazda is aware of this issue and has chosen not to issue a SSP. My vehicle touch screen is unusable because of the ghost screen issue and there is no way for the consumer to disable the touch screen.
2017 Mazda Mazda6 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2017 Mazda Mazda6.
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL
- Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2017 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured August 12, 2016, to September 28, 2016 and equipped with optional accessory fog lights. Due to an incorrect combination switch being installed, the turn signals may not automatically cancel by the rotation of the steering wheel. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: A vehicle continuously driven with the turn signal flashing may result in confusion to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the combination switch, free of charge. The recall began December 2016. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 0316J.

Our grand touring edition has all the bells and whistles of much more expensive vehicles. Its safety features are second to none. The only complaint is that there is too much road noise, but I'm happy to inform you that this issue was rectified in 2018.

Welcome! This book is not recommended for older readers.
-
Great car overall, but the only downside is the low rear visibility from inside. That's the only reason why I couldn't give it a 5-star rating.
-
The car has less than 40k miles on it and drives great. It has had no significant problems and sips gas (31 mpg, mixed driving) while giving better performance than the numbers like horsepower would indicate. Both the interior and exterior have style (I'm glad I didn't wait for the '18 accord) and the interior is very functional with reasonably comfortable seats. Everything on the car just works well together. It handles and shifts smoothly, and pours down the road with liquid smoothness and precision. As someone who has owned VWs, I can say that this Passat is reliable. One downside are the OEM tires which have no snow capability or cold weather handling at all, and potholes destroyed 2 of them. However, I replaced all of them with Michelin touring tires and that issue was solved. Another glitch is the backup camera which will sometimes not come on after initially starting up, or take two minutes before it does. This is rare but annoying, but luckily the mirrors are a good backup. Overall, this is a great car that I would highly recommend!

Looking for the best manual transmission 4 door sedan available in the USA today? Look no further! This car is not only a great value for the price, but also reliable and economic to own. After owning and driving it for nearly 10k miles, I can attest to its reliability and generally economic performance. With an average of about 33-34 MPG in the city and on the highway, it's a great choice for those looking to save on gas. The car rides and handles like a sports car, making it a joy to drive on the winding roads of Kentucky. While the electronics can be a bit finicky at times, it doesn't impact the operation of the car. Just be sure to keep an eye out for the blind spot warning lights, as they are not always reliable. Changing the radio stations can be a bit cumbersome, but it's a small price to pay for such a great car. Plus, Mazda has made heated seats available in the I miss the heated seats in my 2017 'Touring' model, and besides the one button radio station change, this is the only thing I view as a major downgrade from my previous car. After almost 7 years and 60k+ miles, the car is still going strong. I have only needed to do minor maintenance such as oil and filter changes, transmission lube change, new battery and tires. It starts and runs great, and everything still works. I bought a cheap old truck for the ranch, so I get to keep this car. It still gets great fuel mileage, and no new brakes yet! I am hoping to get at least 250k miles out of it. Although the electronics are cumbersome to use, I am still very happy with it. Update at 68k miles: Right front wheel bearing is starting to howl a little now. Don't worry, I have a replacement TIMKEN bearing/hub ready to go. I'm just waiting for the weather to improve before I replace it, along with the spark plugs and probably brakes. Despite these minor issues, I'm still getting 32-36MPG most tank fulls. Thanks for reading!

We were given this car as a loaner while my wife's Fusion was in the shop after being hit in the rear by someone texting. Although the Mazda was not exceptional, it was still a decent car. It rode harsher and with considerably more road noise than the Fusion it was replacing but felt a bit 'smaller and lighter' (so to speak) handling wise. One thing I really disliked about it was that the steering felt 'nervous' requiring constant steering corrections as it seemed to tramline on even the smallest road issues. Overall, it was an okay experience, but I was happy to get the Fusion back after driving this for about 10 days.

I purchased a top-of-the-line Mazda 6 brand new a few years ago. It worked perfectly until it reached 50,000 miles, when the GPS and radio stopped working completely. Unfortunately, at 60,500 miles, just 500 miles after the warranty expired, the car's engine broke down, even though I regularly had it serviced. This left me with a bill of over $7,000 for diagnostics and a new engine with higher mileage. I ended up trading it in for a much older car since I couldn't afford the new engine. Despite this, I must say that Mazda's roadside assistance was not helpful when the engine failed. My car broke down in a remote desert area in the mid-summer where I barely had any phone signal and couldn't connect to the internet. Roadside assistance repeatedly sent me forms through text that required internet connection to fill, even though I told them I couldn't connect to the internet. They insisted I fill them and would not send anybody until I did. After 2.5 hours in the heat and fairly bad dehydration, I ended up calling another tow company who I had to pay over $300 to help. Needless to say, the whole experience was a nightmare and very dangerous. After owning 3 Mazdas previously, I will never buy one again.

I purchased a 2017 Mazda 6 less than 90 days ago. Today, when I hit the start button, every warning light came on. I immediately contacted Mazda roadside assistance, who promptly sent a wrecker to assist me. Although they were unable to turn off the car, they provided excellent service. The dealer has the car for the day and is currently assessing the issue. While I wait, I am confident that they will provide me with a courtesy car. Although there is a wait time to speak with someone at Mazda, I am confident that they will address my concerns in a timely manner. I appreciate Mazda's commitment to customer satisfaction and would highly recommend their vehicles to others.
