2015 Mazda Mazda6 problems

The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.

The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.

First generation (GG1; 2002)

The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).

The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.

Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.

In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.

Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.

In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.

In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

Common 2015 Mazda Mazda6 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Mazda Mazda6 2015, several common problems have been identified:

  • Parking Sensors: Entry-level SE cars do not come with front and rear parking sensors, which can be inconvenient due to the car's size. This absence can result in parking scrapes and dings, so it's advisable to check for these damages when considering these models.
  • Boot Struts: There have been instances of boot struts failing in the Mazda 6. Mazda conducted a recall in early 2017 to address this issue. Owners should ensure that their car has had this work carried out by contacting a local Mazda dealership.
  • TomTom Navigation System: Some owners have reported issues with the live traffic service provided by the TomTom satellite navigation system, stating that it does not work consistently. This can be a concern for those relying on navigation services.
  • Particulate Filter System: Diesel models of the Mazda 6 may experience problems with the particulate filter system. Accidentally shutting it off mid-regeneration cycle can lead to fuel contamination of the oil system, potentially causing engine damage over time. Owners of diesel models should be aware of this issue and ensure proper maintenance.
  • Airbag Safety: Continued exposure to high levels of absolute humidity may cause the driver's front airbag inflator housing to rupture, posing a safety risk in the event of a crash. This issue requires the replacement of the airbag inflator to prevent potential harm to the driver and other occupants.

These common problems reported by owners of the Mazda Mazda6 2015 highlight various areas of concern that potential buyers or current owners should be aware of to ensure the proper maintenance and safety of their vehicles.

Does the 2015 Mazda 6 have transmission problems?

The problem: Affected vehicles have a six-speed manual transmission that may be hard to shift into 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears. In addition, the shifter may sometimes jump out of 3rd gear over bumps in the road. Faulty clutch hub assemblies and a possibly bad 3rd gear are being blamed.

How many miles will a 2015 Mazda 6 last?

between 200,000 and 250,000 miles

A Mazda vehicle can last a long time. Mazda vehicles are known for lasting over a decade and between 200,000 and 250,000 miles, with some going even longer than that. The key to a long-lasting Mazda vehicle is to keep it running with proper maintenance and regular service.

Is Mazda 6 high maintenance?

Mazda scores high in terms of reliability and is one of the most reasonable car brands to maintain and repair. Mazda maintenance cost comes in at an average of $426 per year, which is less than the $652 yearly average for the top 32 car brands.

And I called the mazda dealer in Fostoria ohio the macanhic told me the PCM power control module had been reprogram and I never received no notice on any recalls or the person I bought my car never either. My car is 7 years old and if it war reprogram it should not go bad that soon. Unless there is a problem with there components there using. But my car will cause a accident if I continue to drive it. I like my mazda6 2015 but I'm afraid after having the car doing what it did to me on the highway. I had no warning lights come on until the day I was driving down the highway when this problem occurred.

  • Summary: I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2015 MAZDA 6. WHILE TRAVELING ON A STRAIGHT 60 MPH HIGHWAY, MY SUNROOF WINDOW SUDDENLY EXPLODED, WITH A LOUD "BANG!". THE WINDOW WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME AND HAD NOT BEEN OPENED IN APPROXIMATELY 3 DAYS. FORTUNATELY, THE INTERIOR DEFLECTOR (SLIDING COVER) WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME, OR GLASS SHARDS WOULD HAVE RAINED DOWN ON MY FACE AND HAIR. NO OBJECTS OR SUDDEN MOTIONS PROVOKED THE EXPLOSION. POLICE WOULD NOT WRITE A REPORT BECAUSE THERE WERE "NO SUSPECTS OF VANDALISM" AND "NO COLLISION WITH OTHER VEHICLES OR PROPERTY". $725 LATER, I HAVE A NEW REPLACEMENT WINDOW FROM THE MANUFACTURER AND HOPE FOR NO SIMILAR FUTURE INCIDENTS OR POSSIBLE MOLD/MILDEW ISSUES. THE CAUSE OF THE SAFETY RISK IS UNKNOWN BUT IS CERTAINLY UNACCEPTABLE, GIVEN THAT I MAINTAIN MY VEHICLE TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS AND AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF ONLY 3 YEARS. I HAVE REPAIR INVOICES, SHOULD THEY BE NECESSARY TO SUBSTANTIATE THIS COMPLAINT.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-07-01
  • VIN: JM1GJ1U56F1
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: INTERMITTENTLY, THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTONS DO NOT PERFORM THEIR PROPER FUNCTION. WHEN EXPERIENCING THE ISSUE, ALL OF THE FOLLOWING OCCUR: 1) CANCEL BUTTON FUNCTIONS AS THE MINUS (DECELERATE) BUTTON, 2) THE MINUS BUTTON FUNCTIONS AS THE PLUS (ACCELERATE) BUTTON, 3) THE PLUS BUTTON DOESN'T WORK, AND 4) THE OFF BUTTON DISENGAGES THE CRUISE CONTROL BUT DOES NOT SHUTOFF THE CRUISE CONTROL MAIN POWER. THIS BEHAVIOR IS AN ISSUE BECAUSE WITH THE CANCEL BUTTON ACTING AS THE MINUS BUTTON, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL ACTIVATE WITH THE CANCEL BUTTON. IN ADDITION, HAVING THE MINUS BUTTON FUNCTION AS THE PLUS BUTTON COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF THE CAR BEHAVES IN THE OPPOSITE MANNER AS EXPECTED. THE ISSUE OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING, AND THE DEALER CLAIMS THEY ARE UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM ON TWO SEPARATE VISITS. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR OVER 18 MONTHS. I'VE FOUND THAT HITTING THE EDGE OF THE STEERING WHEEL HARD WILL CLEAR THE PROBLEM - GENERALLY FOR THE REST OF THE DAY, BUT IT RETURNS SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. I'M REPORTING THE PROBLEM TO THE NHTSA BECAUSE AN INTERNET SEARCH HAS SHOWN SIMILAR PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN REPORTED. NO ONE HAS POSTED A CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM OR RESOLUTION. 2015 Mazda Mazda6 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2015 Mazda Mazda6.

2017-06-22
  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Components: PARKING BRAKE
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Mazda6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3 vehicles. Water could possibly enter the brake caliper causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode and possibly bind.
  • Consequence: If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will check the parking brake actuator shafts, replacing any that are corroded, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed August 24, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1217F.

  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured October 25, 2012, to October 10, 2014. If the pressures of four of the tires on an affected vehicle gradually drop at the same time, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may not warn the driver of the drop in pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring System."
  • Consequence: A vehicle that is driven with under inflated tires may experience a sudden tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will update the TPMS software, free of charge. The recall began on December 10, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.

  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR
  • Summary: Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014 Mazda3 vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through December 18, 2013, and model year 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured May 20, 2013, through December 4, 2013, and both equipped with a 2.5L engine and a regenerative engine braking system. When driving the affected vehicles in heavy rain or in deep puddles, the alternator belt may slip causing the Power Control module (PCM) to incorrectly assume failure of the charging system.
  • Consequence: Once the PCM assumes that the charging system has failed, the vehicle will stop charging and could result in poor acceleration, loss of steering assist and windshield wiper operation, and a possible engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the PCM with updated software, free of charge. The recall began on May 19, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 7314D.

My 2015 Touring Mazda 6 with the Bose and Moonroof package has had some issues, but I am confident that they will be resolved soon. I have taken it to my dealership a few times and they have been working on fixing the Tire Pressure Monitoring system and the driver seat. I have also had some issues with the paint and the headlights, but I am sure that these can be resolved as well. I am confident in the Mazda brand and their commitment to customer satisfaction. I am looking forward to enjoying my car for many years to come.

I noticed that there were a significant number of complaints about the upgraded stereo in the Mazda, and even an online petition about how bad the head unit was. Perhaps the petition was turned off after 4000 signers, but unfortunately, the same problems were present in the 2015 model. The unit was so bad that it was no longer included in the 2016 model. Additionally, I found that the AC vents for the driver were poorly placed, which made it difficult to cool down the car in the Arizona desert. Despite these issues, I decided to trade in the car and purchase a Scion made by Toyota instead. I have been asked to update my review, but my opinion remains the same. I hope this feedback is helpful.

Update- Jul 23. Congratulations to my Mazda 6 for passing the 165k mile threshold! I have put more than 100k miles on it since I purchased it used and I am happy to report that I have had no major issues with it. Like many direct injected vehicles, I do believe I'm getting some carbon build-up, but that's my only issue. As I have gotten used to driving a manual transmission, I must admit that sometimes I do get tired of 'rowing' my own gears, especially during rush hour. However, on the open road, I love to shift and the Mazda 6 makes it a fun experience. When I have jumped in the other car, which is a smooth riding, smooth cruising Sonata, in less than 48 hours, I'm complaining to myself that this is 'boring'. So I hop back into the Mazda 6 and the grin comes back over my face. The Mazda 6 is slightly smaller than the Sonata, but it has more precise steering, making me feel like I'm driving a go-kart. The steering takes me exactly where I am pointing it. With mixed driving, I get about 33 mpg consistently with the Mazda, which is better than the Sonata's 29 mpg. As for highway traveling, the Hyundai gets me about 33 mpg and the Mazda gets me about 38. However, when I do a long highway trip and keep my speed around 65 mph, I achieved almost 45 mpg in the Mazda. Just below 70 mph cruising, the car can easily do 40 mpg, which is almost hybrid car territory. In putting 16,000 miles on the car, I've spent about $1927.28 on maintenance. It is not because things have broken down, but since I purchased the car used, I wanted all fluids and maintenance as new. Meaning I replaced the coolant, the transaxle fluid, the brake fluid, air and cabin filters, turned the front rotors and put new pads on it. I also replaced the tires and tinted the windows. None of these things had to be done quite yet, but I wanted to have peace of mind and I am now happy. The only thing left to do is add a new android head unit to replace the standard stereo.Compared to my 2004 Infiniti G35 that this car replaced, the Mazda 6 doesn't have the same power and punch, but it does handle better and is more tossable. I've owned Toyotas and Hondas in the past, and they have been the most long-lasting. So far, both the Mazda and the Hyundai have had practical maintenance costs, and the Sonata has only required $1171.96 in maintenance at 74K, which makes me happy. Although it remains to be seen whether the Mazda or the Hyundai will last as long as my previous cars, I'm pleased with their performance so far.

We looked at several cars including the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altama, and more. After careful consideration, we narrowed it down to the Honda Accord and the Mazda 6. Although we already have an Accord, which is a great vehicle, I wanted something with a sportier look, which is why I chose the 6. Not only does this car look amazing, but the interior and value for the price are unbeatable. I'm getting an average of around 33mpg, with half town driving and half highway. This car is so much fun to drive, it handles incredibly well and has great pick up for a 4 cylinder. I highly recommend the Mazda, and I'm a very satisfied customer who will remain loyal to the brand.

I hope you're doing well! I've been driving this car for almost two years now and I still love the comfortable and quiet ride. I have noticed that I've been using 1-2 quarts of oil between regular oil changes (7,500 miles). Do you happen to know if this is normal?

  4. Raphael Goldner 2024-10-14

This is one of the best cars I've ever owned! The styling is fantastic both inside and out, and the quality of the interior materials is top-notch. I'm getting fantastic mileage, with high 20's in the city and high 30's on the highway, all on regular gas. The handling is great for a midsize car, and there's plenty of power for highway passing. While the ride can be a bit stiff, the safety features like blind spot and rear back up signals make up for it. I love the tracking headlights for going through corners at night, and I feel like I'm driving a much more expensive car than what I paid for. I look forward to driving it every day! So far, I haven't had any problems with the car, and the updates on software, tire sensor monitor, and Blue Tooth have been easy to manage. I traded in a 2006 VW Passat for this car, and what a difference! I will never buy a VW again; nothing but problems and terrible customer service. After three years of ownership, this car has been excellent and reliable. The only complaints I have are the hard ride and a bit of underpowered acceleration. However, the excellent handling and mileage make up for it. I recently replaced the original Dunlop tires with Continental Extreme Contact DWS, and it was an excellent choice. The ride, handling, and traction are all better, especially in snow. If you're looking for a car with more power, the 2018 Mazda 6 is available with Turbo and makes a big difference!

  5. Malcolm Reynolds 2024-10-03

I've had my 2015 Mazda 6 for about a year now and I must say, the exterior design and color (platinum silver) are absolutely stunning! However, I do feel that the 4 cylinder engine lacks the power that one would expect in a car that looks this good. It would be great if Mazda could offer a 4 cylinder turbo and/or V6 option in future models. Additionally, I noticed that the interior design of the 2015 model is a bit too austere for my liking, especially when compared to the previous 2013 Mazda 6 that I owned. As a Japanese car, I believe it should have a flashy interior with a highly illuminated instrument panel that sets it apart from its German counterparts. Overall, I think this is a great looking car that could benefit from a more powerful engine and a more exciting dashboard. With these improvements, I believe the Mazda 6 could easily compete with the likes of BMW 5 or Mercedes E series.
