2018 Mazda Mazda6 problems

The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.

The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.

First generation (GG1; 2002)

The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).

The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.

Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.

In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.

Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.

In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.

In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

Common 2018 Mazda Mazda6 problems

Based on the information from the sources provided, here are some common problems reported by owners of the 2018 Mazda Mazda6:

  • Brake Disc Wear:
    • The Mazda 6 can be hard on its brake discs, leading to vibrations under braking. If detected during a test drive, it may require a new set of brake discs and pads to resolve.
  • Particulate Filter System in Diesel Models:
    • Diesel models may face issues with the particulate filter system, especially if it is accidentally shut off during its regeneration cycle. This can lead to fuel contamination of the oil system, potentially causing damage to the engine over time.
  • Parking Sensors and Boot Struts:
    • Entry-level SE cars do not come with front and rear parking sensors, which can be inconvenient due to the car's size. Additionally, boot struts have been known to fail, with Mazda issuing a recall in early 2017 to address this issue.
  • Live Traffic Service with TomTom Navigation:
    • Some owners have reported issues with the live traffic service provided by the TomTom satellite navigation system, stating that it does not work consistently.
  • Driver's Airbag Safety Concerns:
    • Continued exposure to high levels of absolute humidity may cause the driver’s front airbag inflator housing to rupture and deploy abnormally in the event of a crash, potentially leading to metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. Owners of affected vehicles are advised to replace the airbag inflator to address this safety risk.

These common problems highlight various areas where owners of the 2018 Mazda Mazda6 have experienced issues, ranging from electronic glitches to mechanical concerns.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • VIN: JM1GL1UM6J1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My car has stalled out on me 6 times in traffic and wouldn’t restart for hours. I took it to the Mazda dealership and they told me nothing was wrong but it continues to happen. I need something done as soon as possible

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
  • VIN: JM1GL1VM3J1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Cracked Cylinder Head. At 50,400 miles. This is far too common of a problem for such a new car with so few miles. I have seen many similar reports online. My mechanic was baffled. This is a $5k cost AT LEAST. Mazda has a history of not covering these defects. And it IS a defect, not a simple wear and tear issue. A cracked cylinder head can eventually lead to engine failure, so it is dangerous to drive with it. The problem HAS been confirmed by an independent service center. I got a oil pressure warning sign.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2018 Mazda 6. The contact stated that while merging onto a freeway the vehicle did not accelerate while pressing the accelerator pedal, lost automotive power. After turning the engine off and back on the vehicle operated as normal but later while driving approximately 65 MPH the failure had reoccurred while attempting the pass a semi-truck on the freeway. The check engine warning light had also illuminated and the vehicle was eventually towed to the local dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 67,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • VIN: JM1GL1WY3J1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: At less than 95,000 miles, the car suddenly started overheating. Coolant level was fine, maybe ever so slightly low (could still see the coolant in tubing and some in reservoir, which was closer to low than full). Replaced ECT sensor, thermostat and water pump which seemed to fix the issue. Drove for 9-10 days with no issues and it started overheating again. I was able to park quickly afterward at work (<10 seconds). Schedule for drop off at dealer (if car didn't show signs of overheating first (would have called tow truck). Checked fluid levels in car (was ~1Qt low) and topped it off. Drove to dealer (~30min ride) with no issues whatsoever. When dealer looked at it, they said cylinder was warped and leaking, requiring new engine. A just paid off car, with less than 100k miles on it, now needs a new engine that will cost more than half of what it's worth.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-07
  • VIN: JM1GL1TY6J1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On [XXX] I purchased a Mazda 6 at Ocean Mazda in Miami, Florida. The car has 18,700 miles. The reason why the car has only 18K miles it's because out of the 4 years we have owned it, it was not used as much as a result of the COVID pandemic and my daughter attending online classes. I have always done timely maintenance services as required by Mazda at our service dealer Ocean Mazda and have proof of maintenance records to confirm the minor maintenance that have been done, oil change, tire rotation, battery replacement and a recall. This past Saturday [XXX] I took our Mazda for an oil change; and I was informed that a Five Point Inspection showed that the Driver Rear brake caliper and pad needed to be replaced because it was measuring 2% lining compared to the three other calipers which showed a 6% lining. Since the 36 month warranty has expired the cost to replace the caliper is $875.20. I'm a mom simply concerned about the safety of my daughter and have zero knowledge about brake pads and calipers, but one thing that I do know is that I have owned multiple cars during my lifetime and have never had an issue with a caliper going bad and much less at 18K miles. I'm conscious of timely maintenance and take care of the cars I owned to lasts years. I asked my service advisor how is it possible that one caliper could go bad in a span of 2,500 miles when the prior inspection done in August 2023 showed all 4 calipers having a 6% lining as per the service report card? Furthermore, the inspection done recently shows the three remaining calipers at 6%. The answer I received from my advisor was that "calipers can go bad", sometimes due to a FAULTY caliper. A caliper on a car with 18K miles should not go bad unless it is a faulty caliper. Mazda should honor the repair as this is a hazard condition caused by their faulty part. POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
  • VIN: JM1GL1WY7J1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Noticed slight coolant leak, took car to mechanic, he stated cylinder head was cracked, & causing coolant to spray everywhere. Towed car to dealer. Was given repair estimate of over $11,000, for a new engine. I see a safety bulletin online for my year make & model car. This overheating can apparently cause an engine fire. So far, Mazda seems to be showing negligence & not properly addressing the issue for owners.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-03
  • VIN: JM1GL1UM4J1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Start engine when cold and it knocks/ taps from the valve cover very loud, found a tab for valve lifters. Mazda said I’m out of warranty and it would be a 2k fix on a car I just bought second hand. A lot of other drivers have experienced the same issue and have even said it’s a safety issues as when it happens for long enough it could cause the cams to wear down causing the car to stall out in traffic or in a dangerous road situation. Very dangerous imo and should be fixed for free as Mazda admitted that it’s a design flaw of the HLA

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
  • VIN: JM1GL1UM2J1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Mazda has a huge issue with there HLAs hydraulic lash adjusters. I've driven the car for 60k+ miles and it's ticked every since I got the car. And many people in the community also have the issue. And Mazda says it's fine and to rev the car above 3k rpms. This issue needs to be resolved. Before my warranty went up they said they'd fix it at the dealer if it would tick while in there possession. That's just not reasonable the tick happened as random as it gets. Please please for the sake of Mazda and all it's owners make Mazda fix this as a recall. Many people in the US would be the happiest people in the planet not having to hear there 20k$ car tick like a broken old piece of junk. Thank you for listening. Your truly a franticly hopeless hard working america with a half broken car.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-04
  • VIN: JM1GL1VM0J1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine has developed an oil leak that is a known manufacturing defect of Mazda 2.5 litre engines TSB #SA-031-21. The oil drips on the hot exhaust and sends smoke into the cabin and probably could start a fire. Also if the engine runs out of oil, it will cause the car to shut off and stall in traffic.

Had 3 people family in car. It was 9 pm had to have towed to nearest auto mechanic place 150.00. They are diagnosing and that is 186.00. This is a scary thing and going to BBB and filing a complaint I'm mad as he'll. Have had inspection done on this car 2 months ago and all required services to this car. This was without warning which is horrifying.

  • Summary: Coolant leaking from head, informed by dealer the cylinder head is cracked and the entire engine needs to be replaced. The engine has just hit 80k miles at this point. This issue caused multiple instances of overheating while driving, one of which caused the vehicle to fail to move forward while on an elevated freeway overpass with no shoulder during rush hour. This issue appears to be widespread for 2016 and newer Mazda models with the 2.5L turbo engine.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-28
  • VIN: JM1GL1WY9J1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Took care for routine maintenance to car dealer (Ourisman Mazda Rockville MD). No problems with car. They reported that I had an 'Coolant Leak at the Cylinder Head'. Cost to fix: $6412.47 They reported that it was 'normal wear and tear'. I found a service bulletin from Mazda whereby they admit a manufacturing defect that affected 2.5T engines. They corrected on March 25th, 2021. However, engines prior to this date had this defect. No recalls were created. No warning to owners. My car was within the mileage warranty when they identified the defect (<60k miles and < 5 yrs old). While my car is less than 5 years old, they now identified the leak, but it has over 60k miles. The local dealer said I was out of warranty and there is nothing they could do. I spoke with Mazda North American Operation and reported the Technical Service Bulletin that they put out on 10/15/21 (after they had already identified the problem, re-engineered the engine, and changed the manufacturing line), I also explained what was reported to me by Ourisman Mazda and emailed her all the documents. She reported that she would be getting back to me in 24-48 hrs.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-28
  • VIN: Jm1gl1um7j1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I took my car in for scheduled maintenance and the technicians at the Mazda dealer found out the tensioner and belt needed to be replaced, when the car is less than 36k in miles. Vehicles being repaired under warranty but a tensioner should not be going out this early in the lifespan of a 2 year old car. I have found a lot of people are complaining for the same issue. This can cause the cars to not run as there’s no notice ahead of time that the belt and tensioner are bad. I do have paper work stating tensioner problems. Vehicles should be recalled due to poor manufacturing and parts making it unsafe on the road.

Negative 2018 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Jaron Bernhard 2024-08-15

UPDATE: After 2 years and 2 services, I had to replace the oil switch within the transmission and the ABS/Brake system is faulty. Previously, I was a Mazda fan and this is my second car, but unfortunately, it will be my last. When I tried to get the passenger seat replaced because it didn't heat up, they claimed it was by design. I also had an issue with Josie coming from the center console, but they didn't hear it. Although they replaced some parts, the noise is now even louder. Additionally, my microphone stopped working and car play is not functioning. Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied with the quality of this car. However, the only good thing so far has been the interior and exterior design.

  2. Theodore Lebsack 2024-04-14

If you're looking for a car that excels at low-speed handling, you may want to consider other options. The car's motor, transmission, and controllers struggle with low rpms, resulting in sluggish response and hesitations. This can be frustrating, especially if you're used to direct connections where your foot is the only controller. However, on the highway, the car performs better, especially if you have a lead-foot. It's worth noting that the car's design prioritizes mileage and higher speed performance, which may explain the jerky hesitation at low speeds. If you frequently drive around town, switching to 'sport' mode can improve low-speed performance, but it will come at the cost of gasoline consumption. Overall, while this car may not be the best fit for those who prioritize low-speed handling, it still has its strengths and is worth considering for other reasons.

  3. Merlin Bailey 2024-02-02

I had the opportunity to test drive a 2018 Mazda6 Grand Touring loaner from the dealer while my Mazda3 was in for service. Here's my review of the car after driving it through a variety of conditions. Compared to the 3 or even older generations of the 6, the new 6 is slightly heavier and the handling is not as sharp. However, the car is stylish and nicely equipped both inside and out. The Grand Touring trim on the 6 is actually the mid-level trim, but it hits the sweet spot with features like the turbo engine, LED lights, moonroof, navigation, Bose stereo, and more, all while saving thousands compared to higher trims. The new turbo 2.5L engine borrowed from the CX-9 provides great low-end torque and acceleration. I averaged 27MPG, which seems about right for a car in this class. If I owned this car, I would definitely swap the Falken tires Mazda uses for different rubber, which would probably improve the ride as well. Overall, it was a great experience driving the Mazda6 Grand Touring and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish and well-equipped car.

Positive 2018 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Tracey Nicolas 2024-11-26

Great looks inside and out! However, it seems like the MAZDA6 Turbo has lost some of its sporty handling and traded it for a less exciting driving experience. I personally miss my 2016 GT w/ tech package. It's important for MAZDA to maintain its sporty edge, as that's what sets them apart from luxury brands.

  2. Justyn Fadel 2024-11-20

I've been driving the car for a couple of weeks now and while my initial impressions were favorable, I don't find it particularly exciting to drive. It doesn't quite live up to the enthusiasm I've read about. The car struggles to handle power coming out of corners, which is likely due to the tire selection and engine tuning. While it's not the best for aggressive driving, it's perfectly fine for normal driving. The car does handle decently until about 70% of its capacity, but it falls apart when you ask the front tires to do too much transferring of weight. The interior and exterior of the car look great, and the interior is a comfortable place to spend time with a good selection of tech. If you're looking for luxury options, the top-tier M6 (GT, GT Reserve or Signature) is the way to go, but if you want a car that's enjoyable to drive hard, the Accord (2.0T) and Camry (V6) are both better options.

I completely agree with a Car & Driver review that stated the performance, handling and interior were more BMW and Audi than Asian import. Even though I don't drive fast, the turbo engine makes maneuvering easy. The Mazda6 is an absolute joy to drive, and it comes with a lot of standard active safety electronics.

I love my car, but I'm only getting an average of 19 MPG. I take great care of it! It's a super nice car with a pretty quick turbo, and it's also very safe (5 stars).

Aesthetic, innovative, powerful, solid, and it's fantastic!
