2010 Mazda Mazda6 problems

The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.

The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.

First generation (GG1; 2002)

The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).

The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.

Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.

In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.

Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.

In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.

In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8BH5A5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: 2010 mazda 6 i series sedan the entire rear subframe/cradle is rotted along with all the other parts connected to it, the A arm, bumper stops, control arms, rear sway bar the entire rear under carriage. took it to the shop and they said there have been several complaints about this exact issue on several of these cars from 09-13 models. the parts was not painted correctly like the front that was recalled. exposed to all weather elements, the shop wants almost 4k for labor only to fix but the main problem is finding the rear subframe on these cars is almost impossible next to cost a fortune. now i have a yard ornament. junk yard wants to give me 170 bucks for the car but im not doing that. Mazda needs to fix this issue. i would of never know it was rotted out unless i took it to the shop for rear swaying and sagging. its all over the road. very dangerous and will cause a wreck almost certainly. please someone do something about this issue. dont have the money to fix this let alone buy another car.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH6A5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The rear subframe is compromised; it separated from the body of the car. The vehicle is in my driveway and available for inspection should the need arise. The rear end had felt a bit shaky for a month so I took it to my mechanic, who declared the vehicle "unfit for the road" due to the fact that the subframe was rotted away and detached from the car itself. I was told one big bump is an accident waiting to happen...pieces of the car would go flying and I could be left with zero mobility to evade oncoming traffic. The possibility of projectiles injuring anyone around the car was enough for me to park it. The car has not been inspected by Mazda, the police, or insurance because there was no accident. Since it's not safe to drive, I took the word of my independent mechanic rather than driving it to a dealership. There were no warnings other than a bit of a sway in the rear end, which I originally attributed to its age. I've researched the issue and it seems to be a result of subpar quality with regard to the metal that was used in manufacturing.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the rear sub frame was rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer informed the contact that it was normal wear and tear, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-09
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH3A5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: My gf went for a basic oil change and the automotive person was shocked to find the rear right cross bar to be suffering from incredible corrosion. He said at this point it is unsafe to drive. We looked into recalls for this make and model and there is one for the front cross bar due to insufficient or improper application of a corrosion spray on the frame. How can they say the front needs to be recalled and not the back? If the dealership didn’t do a good job of covering the appropriate metal frame in corrosion resistant spray any car that has that level should be recalled. This is immensely dangerous

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-08
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH3A5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Mazda issued a extended warranty for sticky dash board and supposedly mailed notices to owners. I never received one and dispute the fact they mailed it to all owners. The sticky dash repair should be issued as a recall as it presents a significant safety issue. The sticky dash is so shiny that it reflects sun into driver’s eyes and should be considered a significant safety issue. I request the NHTSA to mandate Mazda to make the sticky dash repair a recalled issue versus allowing them to issue a extended warranty. I never got the notice and the issue existed within the warranty period. In addition, what happens if the issue arises after the warranty period. This sticky dash is a defect in the manufacturing of the vehicle and presents a significant safety issue to drivers as it impacts their road visibility, which may lead to increased accidents. Please have Mazda issue a recall on the sticky dash repair due to the manufacturer’s defect. Thank you.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-25
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH7A5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I took car to dealership for recall repair (3) one of which was for front sub-frame corrision While it was there thet called Me and said that the rear sub-frame was rausted so bad it was unsafe to drive and that it would cost $4600 to fix it. It seems to Me if You aknowledge a corrision problem in the front then You would accept responsibility for rear. Mazda said that They would have fixed it if the title were not branded ? It was wrecked in the front end and I replaced hood grille bumper lights etc and has nothing to do with the rear sub-frame. The Mazda Forum say's that it is shoddy workmanship. This car only has 147,000 miles on it and runs like a new car. I am a US army Vet 10 years) and am retired and cannot afford to fix this on My own and this is about doing what is right so I am asking You to help Me to get this problem fixed so I can drive this car. Thank You,

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-13
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH2A5
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: While im driving the steering is shifting to the right and seems lower on right side. My tires daily need to have air in them because of the uneven weight. While I drive and let go of the gas the car pulls back like an E brake could be stuck not sure though. No accidents at all but it seems like the vehicle is getting weaker and weaker with the uneven weight going down on the tires and steering seems like it's going to crash onto the right without being able to control it.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-11
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH5A5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The rear subframe is corroded with rust to the point of about to break into pieces. I did not have control of the vehicle and could not drive above 40mph, sudden pull to one side while braking, loose steering. I could have had a wreck if the subframe would have broke before taking the vehicle in to be inspected by an independent service center. I live over an hour to the nearest Mazda dealership and the car is not drivable. No warning lamps came on and I first noticed the problems around January 11,2023. The part looks completely tissue thin all over and the rest of the components look new bolted to it. I do have pictures from the independent service center. I think the car needs to be seen by a regional service manager like a Mazda engineer. This is not just rust this is a defective part that was to thin to begin with.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-16
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH1A5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Crossmember rust from recall campaign 2818I is able to effect structural attachment despite recall work. The recall installed an "improved: cross member. This was not an actually replacement cross member, rather additional plate steel between the rear and front of the existing attachment points of the defective OE cross member. Improved cross member contains no provisions to support rapidly corroding lower control arm attachment point in original cross member. Added member for recall also does not appear to additionally support lateral stresses from control arm. Evaluation of original cross-member seemed inadequate to detect structural integrity based on condition of the cross member today. "improved" cross member does not support mounting points of the control arm. Based on recall documents, some "improved" cross members have supports for Lower Control Arm (LCA) mounts. This issued occurred with sudden change in steering and braking characteristics. Vehicle suddenly started pulling right. Issue further exacerbated after follow on braking. Passenger wheel suddenly lost alignment and camber is indicating lower attachment geometry change. I was able to control vehicle, but with significant effort.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-29
  • VIN: 1yvhz8ch0a5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: My front sub frame was completely rotted, unsafe to drive and was repaired with Mazda's recall. It now appears that the REAR sub frame is rusting at an excessive rate. I have been reading several complaints where the same incidents are happening with the rear sub frame snapping while people are driving. Car is not safe. This needs to be addressed by Mazda. They are aware of front sub frame, but failed to include the REAR sub frame. Not sure what to do at this point, it will costs thousands to repair, yet is NOT SAFE to drive. Please look into this matter as this is a very serious issue and will result in serious injury or death.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-28
  • VIN: 1yvhz8bh0a5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I purchased this vehicle for my 16 yr old daughter 1 yr ago. The car has a clean carfax and has had no accidents. Upon purchasing the car the headlights continue to burn out. Taking it to a Mazda dealership i learned the headlight assembly unit was melting. I had to purchase 2 used headlight assembly because new from the dealership are 1,000 a piece. 2 used but perfectly working headlights were installed and within a yr the headlights had burned out again. I went to change the bulbs only to learn the headlight assembly were once again burnt. I have to purchase 2 new headlight assembly again but the mechanic can not guarantee that this burning situation won't occur. After calling around to places to find headlight assembly I have come to find out many are burnt. This seems like a real problem considering you need headlights to drive at night. Spending 1,000 everytime my headlights burn out seems 100% unreasonable and the fact that there is cleary a wiring issue within the headlight assembly unit itself seems to be a problem. I have been on multiple forums and this is a common issue. Please fix the problem!!!!!!

STEERING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-27
  • VIN: 1YVHZ8CH0A5
  • Components: STEERING,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2010 Mazda Mazda6. The contact stated that the steering wheel was pulling without warning. There was rust on the frame. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was diagnosed and repaired. Mechanic noted that Mazda’s recall repair only served to keep the car from splitting apart, but it in no way resolved the control arm issue. As a result my car was unexpectedly swerving all over the road and was difficult to control. It was with the control arm still somewhat attached, though extremely loose. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign number 18V631000 (Suspension, structure). The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 151,000. Consumer stated there is significant rust on on side, where control arm attaches to steering. Vehicle has been repaired.

  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations

  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured February 4, 2008, to December 3, 2009. The protective coating may not have been properly applied to the air bag control unit (ACU) and, as a result, moisture may damage the unit causing it to malfunction.
  • Consequence: Failure of the ACU would illuminate the air bag warning light and prevent the air bags from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Mazda dealers will replace the ACU, free of charge, however parts are not currently available. The recall began June 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 9816H.

In the affected vehicles, spiders may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent hose, blocking it and causing the fuel tank to have an excessive amount of negative pressure.
  • Consequence: Negative pressure could cause the fuel tank to crack resulting in a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module and inspect and clean the canister vent line. If a web was found in the line, the fuel tank and check valve on canister vent line will be replaced. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall began on April 30, 2014. • Manufacturer: MAZDA MOTOR CORP
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: MAZDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 MAZDA6 VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 8, 2008, THROUGH FEBRUARY 8, 2010. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL TANK PRESSURE MAY BECOME EXCESSIVELY NEGATIVE WHEN THE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM WORKS TO PURGE THE VAPORS FROM THE CANISTER.
  • Consequence: AS THE CANISTER IS PURGED REPEATEDLY DURING NORMAL OPERATION, THE STRESS ON THE FUEL TANK MAY EVENTUALLY RESULT IN A CRACK, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO FUEL LEAKAGE AD AN INCREASED RISK OF FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND CLEAN UP THE CANISTER VENT LINE, AND INSTALL A SPRING TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF SPIDER FROM ENTERING THE VENT LINE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MAZDA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-222-5500.

Negative 2010 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Will Kiehn 2025-02-28

Although my Mazda 6 has around 30,000 miles on it, I am confident in my assessment of its performance. While the engine may not be as powerful as some other models, the car's handling is exceptional and allows for tight turns with minimal body roll. Additionally, the car's stereo system could benefit from some improvements, but overall, I am satisfied with my purchase.

  2. Wilfrid Kozey 2025-01-15

Although my experience with the 2010 Mazda 6 Manual sport edition has been disappointing, I would like to provide some feedback. The throttle lag has been a major issue for me, and I have noticed that the car shudders when reversing. Additionally, the hand brake doesn't work as well as I would like, and the temperature control could be improved. Furthermore, the car bottoms out easily, so I have to be cautious when driving over speed bumps. I would suggest taking the car for an extended test drive before making a purchase decision.

  3. Casimer Schinner 2024-10-18

While the fuel economy may not be as good as some of its competitors, it's worth noting that the comfort on a 55 mile commute is quite good.

  4. Pierce Tillman 2024-10-10

I had a 2010 Mazda 6 and it was a great vehicle! I loved it so much. It ran smoothly, had great acceleration, and was very comfortable. It was perfect for my family. Unfortunately, I was in an accident where another driver hit me on the passenger side while going between 30-40mph. The damage was extensive and my car was totaled. Although I was disappointed, I am grateful that I wasn't in a more serious accident that could have been fatal.

  5. Jose Parisian 2024-09-15

Hi there! I've had the car for about a month now and overall it's been great. The only thing I've noticed is that the pick up could be a bit better. If you have the extra money, I would recommend going for the bigger engine. But other than that, I'm really happy with the car so far!

Positive 2010 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Marcelino Brakus 2025-03-14

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to follow up on my previous post from Aug 23 and share my continued positive experience with the Mazda 6. I must say, your reviewers were absolutely right in their assessment of this car. I was even able to negotiate a great deal and got over $4250 off the price! In terms of fuel efficiency, I'm getting 21.5 mpg around town and 25 on longer drives with clear roads. The braking and steering are both brilliant, and I feel incredibly safe driving this car. The fact that it's built in the USA is just the cherry on top! I also appreciate the practical features like the back seat splits and folds (Honda, take note!) and the fact that it runs on regular fuel (Nissan V6's, please follow suit!). The stability control being standard is also a huge plus (Nissan, please take note). Lastly, I must say that the 215 55x17 tires are so much more sensible than the previous 45x18's, especially with our appalling roads. Thank you for creating such a fantastic car!

  2. Sigrid Konopelski 2025-03-01

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2010 Mazda 6 2.5L that I bought back in 2012. It was certified and has been an amazing ride ever since! I have absolutely no complaints about it. It runs so smoothly and has never given me a hard time. When I bought it, it had 19,000 miles on it and now it has over 205,000 miles and it's still going strong!

  3. Brandt Brakus 2025-02-26

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Mazda 6 that I purchased back in October 2010. I've put around 24,000 miles on it and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any major problems with it so far. Recently, I changed my front brakes after 20,000 miles and it's still running smoothly. The car has pretty good pick-up for a 4 cylinder and drives very well on the highway. Additionally, it has a very large trunk and a roomy back, making it a great option for anyone who needs extra space. Overall, I would highly recommend this car to any prospective buyers. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help with!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Mazda! It sounds like you made a great choice in upgrading to the S Grand Touring. With all the extra features you got, it definitely seems like a great value compared to other luxury brands. I hope you continue to enjoy your car for many years to come!

  5. Isadore Rohan 2024-11-14

After driving 5000 miles, I am happy to report that my Mazda 6 (ITP - V4, ebony black with black interior) has exceeded my expectations. It is a fantastic car for its value, with a sleek and sporty design that sets it apart from the crowd. The handling is superb and it has just the right amount of power to make everyday driving a pleasure. I have added some personal touches, such as HID lights (inside/outside), tinted windows, a silver bumper protector, mud flaps, silver door handles and pillar posts, and I always receive compliments on how great it looks. Overall, I highly recommend the Mazda 6 to anyone in the market for a stylish and reliable sedan.
