The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.

The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.

First generation (GG1; 2002)

The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).

The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.

Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.

In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.

Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.

In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.

In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

Common 2012 Mazda Mazda6 problems

The 2012 Mazda MAZDA6 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, with the worst complaints being related to lights, body/paint, and cooling system issues.

  • Lights Problems: The most common issue reported by owners is related to the lights, with a total of six complaints and 28 NHTSA complaints. These problems include headlights not working, interior lights flickering, and tail lights malfunctioning. These issues can affect the visibility of the driver and other road users, potentially causing accidents.
  • Body/Paint Problems: There is only one complaint in this category, but it has eight NHTSA complaints. This issue is related to the paint peeling or flaking off, which can affect the appearance of the car and reduce its value.
  • Cooling System Problems: There is only one complaint in this category, but it has 12 NHTSA complaints. This issue is related to the cooling system, which can cause the engine to overheat and potentially fail. This can be a serious problem that can lead to costly repairs or even the replacement of the engine.
  • Engine Problems: Some Mazda 6 GH models have had issues with the engine's timing chain, which can result in a rattling noise and potential engine damage if not addressed . Some owners have also reported issues with the engine's oil consumption. These issues can be costly to repair and can affect the performance and reliability of the car.
  • Transmission Problems: Some Mazda 6 GH models have had issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping gears, rough shifting, and failure of the transmission . This can be an expensive issue to fix and can affect the drivability and reliability of the car.
  • Suspension Issues: The Mazda 6 GH suspension is known to be prone to wear and tear, particularly on cars that have been driven on rough or poorly maintained roads . This can result in issues such as clunking noises, rough handling, and uneven tire wear. These issues can affect the comfort and safety of the car.
  • Electrical Faults: The Mazda 6 GH has a relatively complex electrical system that can be prone to faults, particularly in older models . Common issues include problems with the central locking, windows, and dashboard displays. These issues can affect the convenience and functionality of the car.
  • Rust: The Mazda 6 GH is known to be prone to rust, particularly on cars that have been exposed to salt on the roads in winter . Rust can form around the wheel arches, the sills, and the floor pan, which can be an expensive issue to fix.

To minimize the risk of encountering problems with a used Mazda 6 GH, it is recommended to have a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic or specialist, obtain a vehicle history report, and be aware of the potential issues that may arise. This can help ensure that the car is in good condition and that any potential problems are identified and addressed before they become serious issues.

  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2012 Mazda Mazda6. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the steering wheel began to shake violently, with the low tire pressure warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over to inspect the vehicle and discovered that the front passenger’s side tire had detached from the vehicle. The contact's father was called to the scene and the spare tire was placed on the vehicle. The contact then drove to an independent mechanic where both the front driver’s and front passenger’s side tires were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test was performed; and the diagnostic test determined that the cross member had corroded and caused the tire failure. The contact was then notified that the vehicle was not covered under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V323000 (Structure, Suspension) and that the warranty on the vehicle had expired. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer and was not repaired. The failure mileage was 204,000.

Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Mazda is recalling certain 2009 CX-7, CX-9 and Mazda6 vehicles sold, or ever registered in the states of Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" or "Zone B" above, Mazda is recalling certain 2007-2008 CX-7 and CX-9 sold, or ever registered in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger side air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began October 4, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recall 17V-012.

  • Consequence: Negative pressure could cause the fuel tank to crack resulting in a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module and inspect and clean the canister vent line. If a web was found in the line, the fuel tank and check valve on canister vent line will be replaced. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall began on April 30, 2014. Negative 2012 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Perry Rice 2024-11-27

I bought this car 8 months ago for $28,000 and it has 18,000 miles on it. Before making my purchase, I did my research and test drove several models from Acura, Nissan, Ford, and Mazda. While the good things I read about the car are true - it's stylish, comfortable, and performs well - there are a few things that weren't mentioned in the reviews. For example, the BLIGHTSPOT behind you can be a bit of a challenge, and the headrest and A pillar can obstruct your view, which can be dangerous. Additionally, the traction control can be a bit sensitive, which can cause acceleration to stall when pulling out of a drive. If you have a family, this may not be the best car for you.

  2. Elliot Wiegand 2024-07-12

Although my experience with this car has been less than satisfactory, I am confident that it will not be the case for everyone. Despite numerous issues with the engine and frequent calls to road service, the service department assured me that everything was fine. While the cup holder was not deep enough to hold a mug of coffee, this was a minor detail. Additionally, the car's fuel efficiency was not up to my expectations, costing me a small fortune in gas every other day. However, I am sure that this car will meet the needs of many drivers. Thank you for considering it.

If you're considering other cars, make sure to check if they have a V6. The 4cyl option may not have the best acceleration and pick-up, but it's perfectly fine for start and go traffic where you won't be going very fast. Keep in mind that you'll need to rev it quite high to get the full advantage of its 168 horsepower.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share my experience with my previous car. I owned it for about 20 months and I must say, I really miss the sporty 4 door sedan. Overall, it was a really nice car and it held up well in the Arizona heat.

  5. Stanton McCullough 2024-01-18

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my new Mazda Touring Plus model. Overall, I think it's a decent car, but I have noticed that the 4 cyl engine can be a bit sluggish and loud. However, I absolutely love the exterior styling, especially the trunk design. Although, I have had some trouble fitting larger boxes through the small opening. Unfortunately, I've also had some issues with the radio being staticy, even when close to local radio stations. I tried to get it repaired at Heritage Mazda of Towson, but they said it was fine, which is a bit frustrating. In my opinion, the Camry SE might be a better option, but I'm still enjoying my Mazda. Thank you for listening to my thoughts!

Positive 2012 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

  1. Hank Carroll 2025-01-08

I bought a 2012 car in 2014 with 50K miles. As a salesperson who drives all day, it has been a reliable companion. With only a battery, tires and brakes needing repairs, it has taken me on long cross-country drives and day-to-day city stop and go driving without any major issues. Although some small things gave out quickly, such as the keys/power locks, trunk latch, interior lights and radio, it has been a great car overall. It has a spacious interior, great factory sound system and a wide clear view of the road with minimal blind spots. Although it is a sluggish car with slow acceleration, it was not bought for performance. I will miss this old, reliable car, but I have traded up for a BMW M series that I can finally afford. If I were back in the situation that I was when I originally bought it, I would definitely buy it all over again. It is definitely a smart buy, and if you need a simple, reliable car with a good amount of room, this is the ride for you.

  2. Benjamin Erdman 2024-10-06

This car has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I purchased it five years ago with 114,000 miles on the clock, and it now has 184,500 miles. I have been amazed at the lack of surprise expenses and the minimal amount of money spent on repairs. It starts and runs all day long without any issues 99% of the time. The one time it did have an issue was due to the negative battery cable corroding, but I was able to easily patch a new one lower where the copper wire was still solid. I recently needed to replace the plug going into the headlight bulb, but this is a known design flaw in these years of 6's and not enough of a deterrent to not buy one in my opinion. I also need to replace another oxygen sensor and another engine mount, but the $100 in parts can be easily done myself. While I wish it had better gas mileage for a 4-cylinder, or more power (just 170hp), the sport shift mode is reliable (along with the transmission entirely) to wind the RPM's quickly. The ride is a bit stiff, but the tight handling, cornering, and steering make up for it. The power steering rack very slowly leaks once or twice a year, but it's no big deal. The seats are comfortable, but I wish they had a little more Not all years of those are always necessarily reliable. You can check carcomplaints.com for good research information. The great styling, especially from the front, really stands out in the pack of lame, boring looking sedans.

  3. Franco Leffler 2024-09-21

There are some positives to this car, but it may not be the best choice for families. The latch system is located too far into the seat, which can make uninstallation challenging. Additionally, while the driver's seat is adjustable, it may not be as comfortable as some would prefer.

  4. Brady Funk 2024-08-11

To be honest, I chose this over the Camry because of the cost savings (big discounts). However, after driving it for a few days, I am convinced that I made the right choice. The driving dynamics are vastly superior, without sacrificing anything in terms of comfort. The build quality and refinement are outstanding. If anything, it feels tighter and more refined than the Camry.

  5. Frederic Wintheiser 2024-08-06

Been a great car.... Low maintenance cost.. Sporty handling...Gas mileage could be better..
