2013 Mazda Mazda6 problems
The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.
The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.
First generation (GG1; 2002)
The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).
The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.
Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.
In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.
Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.
In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.
In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

Common 2013 Mazda Mazda6 problems
The 2013 Mazda6 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include engine failure, transmission failure, and a melting dashboard.
Engine failure is one of the most frequently reported problems, with the 2004 model having the highest instance of engine failure. The average mileage for engine failure occurring is 98,000 miles. Some owners believe that the exhaust system is poorly designed or too restrictive, but mechanics have not been able to identify a specific cause of engine failure. Some owners report a knocking before the failure, while others say it failed with no warning.
Transmission failure is another common issue, particularly with the 2014 model. It was the most reported problem for the 2014 Mazda6, and it also occurred at relatively low mileage, with an average of 55,000 miles. Most owners had to replace the transmission. Owners reported the transmission slipping, delayed shifting, and rough shifting. It can also cause vibration or jolting when shifting gears.
The 2009-2013 models have a problem with the dashboard, which is unable to withstand the heat from sunlight. The dash begins to melt along with the glue that is used to cover the dash, creating a sticky film. A sticky dash can be a nuisance, but the bigger concern is that the process causes the dash to shine. When the light strikes it, it reflects on the windshield. This can make the windshield impossible to see through, which can easily lead to an accident. Mazda issued an extended warranty for the problem, covering the dash for 10 years. However, many Mazda owners say that they were never notified and found out only after the warranty had expired.
Other issues include vibration under braking, which can be caused by worn-out brake discs, and problems with the live traffic service provided by the TomTom satellite navigation system, which may not work all the time. Diesel models, in particular, can suffer from issues with the particulate filter system, which can cause problems if accidentally shut off part-way through its regeneration cycle. This can result in contamination of the oil system with fuel, which results in the oil level rising gradually over time.
In summary, the 2013 Mazda6 has several common problems, including engine failure, transmission failure, and a melting dashboard. These issues can be costly to repair and can affect the safety and reliability of the vehicle. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-04
- VIN: 1YVHZ8EH3D5
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: My car has approx 115,000 miles. I took it to Bass Mazda to have spark plugs and serpentine belt changed simply for maintenance purposes. After leaving dealership my car was pulling to the right. My steering wheel was no longer centered. It also was turned toward the right. Any time I had to hit the brakes the car pulled very hard to right. Long story short it we ended up finding out that my sub frame is very rusted and cracked. My car specifically does not fall into the recall for this issue. When I called mazda to inform them that this may be an issue with other cars the rep was ki d of rude. She just kept telling me I needed to contact the dealership to see what they could do and get cost appraisal. I was simply trying to let them know this could be an issue for other vehicles.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-28
- VIN: 1YVHZ8CB5D5
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 2013 Mazda 6 VIN [XXX] 1)Fuel tank leak. yes it is available for inspection 2)Gas leak with danger of fire or explosion. 3) Yes 4) No 5)Yes Reoccurring The 2014 Mazda 6 had a recall for the exact same problem I am having where the tank would overfill or if parked unlevel and it will activate a check engine light and "leak gas" out of the EVAP canister even while driving. The recall covered cars built between October 25, 2012 and May 9, 2013. My car was built 7-19-2012 and the dealer will not fix the issue. I have taken it to a dealer in Cincinnati and they said put a new fuel cap on it which I did. The problem has persisted and has gotten worse. I have taken it to garages where they have merely reset the light and returned it unfixed. I have lived "because of the Covid" with the situation over a year and a half by only filling the tank half full. I have only recently discovered the 2014 had a recall but not the 2013. I have spent over a 1000$ trying to get someone to fix it but no body has yet to do the job. It has potential to explode and or catch afire. I am asking for help and reporting Mazda for under recalling and fixing the recall. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-05
- VIN: 1yvhz8ch6d5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: was driving on the highway when the check engine light came on. not 10 minutes later, I lost acceleration and steering. managed to get to the shoulder just in time before my car pretty much died. the water light and battery light came on when I came to a stop. mechanic discribes it as 'catastrophic engine failure'. other than the check engine light, there were no other warnings. the temperature gage was normal and there were no weird sounds or smoke. diagnostic readings said a coolant leak lead to the radiator overheating which caused the engine to seize. the freeze frame data says 'P0117 engine coolant temperature sensor 1 circuit low'. I researched that and it said that when 'low', the check engine will come on but there will probably be no other warnings and that the sensor usually needs to be replaced around 100k miles. my vehicle is at 51k miles. currently have 3k in repairs which does not include the cost of an engine.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-19
- VIN: 1YVHZ8DH1D5
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: RELATED TO MAZDA RECALL NUMBER 2818I - FRONT FRAME ROTTING OUT. THEY APPLIED A BANDAID FIX UNDER THE RECALL, TO ONLY 1 SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE PART THEY USED DOES NOT EVEN CONNECT TO THE ACTUAL SUSPENSION PIECES THAT ARE ROTTING OUT OF THE FRAME. IT IS BASICALLY A PLATE TO KEEP THE ROTTING FRAME FROM SEPARATING COMPLETELY ON ONLY 1 SIDE. THE PROBLEM IS THE ENTIRE FRAME IS STILL ROTTING AT A CRAZY EXCESSIVE RATE. I HAVE HAD MANY USED, OLDER VEHICLES AND HAVE NEVER SEEN A CAR SO NEW ALMOST RENDERED UNDRIVABLE DUE TO THE FRAME CONDITION. MY MECHANIC SAID IT SHOULD HAVE ALL BEEN REPLACED GIVEN HOW MUCH CORROSION/RUST IS ON THE ENTIRE FRAME INSTEAD OF ONLY A BRACKET ON ONE SIDE... AND THE FIX THEY PERFORMED IS NOTHING MORE THAN A LIABILITY TREATMENT TO KEEP THE CAR FROM COMPLETELY FALLING APART AND KILLING SOMEONE WHEN THE FRAME FAILS ON THAT SIDE. THE FRAME WAS LEFT IN PLACE AND IS ROTTING FASTER THAN I HAVE EVEN SEEN ON A VEHICLE ESPECIALLY AT LESS THAN 10YEARS OLD AND LESS THAN 100K MILES. NHTSA NEEDS TO FOLLOW UP ON THIS RECALL AS SOME DEALERS ARE DOING THE BEAR MINIMUM TO 'FIX' THE ISSUE INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE FRAME AS THEY SHOULD BE....SOME OF THE CARS WERE NEWER AND WERE NOT YET EXPERIENCING THE HEAVY RUST AT THE TIME OF THE RECALL BUT FAST FORWARD A YEAR OR TWO AND THE ENTIRE FRAME IS NEARLY JUNK COVERED BY A FANCY METAL PLATE ON ONLY 1 SIDE THAT IS SIMPLY INTENDED TO KEEP THE ROTTING FRAME FROM SEPARATING AND NOTHING ELSE...IT DIDN'T AT ALL 'FIX' THE PROBLEM. I CANNOT SUBMIT PICS RIGHT NOW, BUT GIVEN THIS IS RELATED TO A PREVIOUS RECALL NOT SURE IT IS NECESSARY...LOOK INTO HOW THEY ARE 'BANDAIDING' SOME OF THE 2013'S WHILE REPLACING THE ENTIRE FRAMES ON 2011'S...IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SAME REPAIR AND THE 'BANDAID' FIX DOES NOTHING TO ADDRESS THE ACTUAL PROBLEM OF PREMATURE ROT ON THE FRAME. I CAN SEND AN EXAMPLE OF BOTH UPON REQUEST.

Been a great car.... Low maintenance cost.. Sporty handling...Gas mileage could be better..
-
In the city or on the open road, this car is a beauty. It looks great, can hold a ton of stuff, responds well, is reliable, and is super comfortable on the highway.

This car is a great choice for both families and single individuals. I have been driving mine for a month now and I am extremely satisfied with it. The only thing I wish is that the V6 motor had a bit more power behind it. I feel that the car shifts too early, which reduces the horsepower. In comparison to my previous 2.0 cars, this 3.7 car is a bit slower off the line. It is taking me some time to get used to the gas mileage, as I am currently averaging 23.5 miles per gallon on both the highway and in the city.

To be honest, I chose this over the Camry because of the cost savings (big discounts). However, after driving it for a few days, I am convinced that I made the right choice. The driving dynamics are vastly superior, without sacrificing anything in terms of comfort. The build quality and refinement are outstanding. If anything, it feels tighter and more refined than the Camry.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share my experience with my previous car. I owned it for about 20 months and I must say, I really miss the sporty 4 door sedan. Overall, it was a really nice car and it held up well in the Arizona heat.

I bought this car 8 months ago for $28,000 and it has 18,000 miles on it. Before making my purchase, I did my research and test drove several models from Acura, Nissan, Ford, and Mazda. While the good things I read about the car are true - it's stylish, comfortable, and performs well - there are a few things that weren't mentioned in the reviews. For example, the BLIGHTSPOT behind you can be a bit of a challenge, and the headrest and A pillar can obstruct your view, which can be dangerous. Additionally, the traction control can be a bit sensitive, which can cause acceleration to stall when pulling out of a drive. If you have a family, this may not be the best car for you.

If you're considering other cars, make sure to check if they have a V6. The 4cyl option may not have the best acceleration and pick-up, but it's perfectly fine for start and go traffic where you won't be going very fast. Keep in mind that you'll need to rev it quite high to get the full advantage of its 168 horsepower.

Although my experience with this car has been less than satisfactory, I am confident that it will not be the case for everyone. Despite numerous issues with the engine and frequent calls to road service, the service department assured me that everything was fine. While the cup holder was not deep enough to hold a mug of coffee, this was a minor detail. Additionally, the car's fuel efficiency was not up to my expectations, costing me a small fortune in gas every other day. However, I am sure that this car will meet the needs of many drivers. Thank you for considering it.
