2014 Mazda Mazda6 problems
The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.
The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.
First generation (GG1; 2002)
The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).
The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.
Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.
In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.
Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.
In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.
In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM1GJ1U64E1
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The car had a (SUA) Sudden Unintended Acceleration malfunction. No, the car was totaled and towed away. My safety was put at risk as I was slowly pulling into a parking spot, eased my foot onto the brake and this malfunction caused my car to involuntarily jolt into a rampant high speed. It jumped a curb and crashed into a tree. My brake was useless in stopping this runaway vehicle. The only thing that stopped it was that tree! The airbag deployed and I was badly bruised from the airbag. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians or other cars near mine. There were no warning lights or messages before, during or after the accident. It happened so quickly because the tree was only a few feet in front of my car.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-01
- VIN: JM1GJ1W56E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When pressing the start stop button, the ignition may not turn off the accessories, even with the shifter in park position, and the vehicle engine shuts off normally the ignition stays on in accessory mode. This can cause battery drain/dead, possibly leaving me stranded in the dangerous situation. This has been unknown problem that is been refused by Mazda to create a recall. Right now it’s the car not acknowledging it’s in park because of a faulty switch, that Mazda clearly knows about and has had tons of complaints about and is well documented with NHTSA. How bad does this need to get before Mazda puts out a recall for all vehicles affected. Eventually, it will never be able to go to park and I may get in my car to drive it and it starts off in the wrong shift the wrong and I end up in a car accident. I’m sure Mazda wouldn’t want any crashes, fires, injuries or deaths on their hands do this well established faulty switch that they refused to recall.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-21
- VIN: JM1GJ1T69E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The Shifter Park Switch failed, causing the vehicle to say on when turning the vehicle off. This causes the battery to drain and created a bad cell battery. This caused the vehicle to turn off while in motion driving multiple times putting the driver and surrounding vehicles at risk. This vehicle has been inspected by the Mazda dealership/manufacturer.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
- VIN: JM1GJ1V62E1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The incident occurred while operating a diligently maintained 2014 Mazda 6 Touring, overseen by dealership service. While driving, the check engine light illuminated, prompting an immediate halt. Upon inspection, a concerning observation was made: the coolant level was significantly low. Despite no apparent leaks, further examination revealed a crack in the cylinder head, allowing coolant to mix with the oil. This issue, specific to Mazda's 2.5L Skyactiv engine, has been identified as a manufacturing defect, independent of overheating. Notably, this problem has been echoed by multiple users, confirming the presence of defective cylinder heads in these vehicles. This flaw necessitates an expensive repair, absolving the vehicle owner of any responsibility. Despite the widespread occurrence of this issue, Mazda has declined to issue a recall for vehicles equipped with these faulty cylinder blocks. Online forums and discussions have highlighted numerous instances of identical cracks in the same location, affirming the prevalence of this problem with Mazda's 2.5L engines. This poses a serious concern for vehicle safety and warrants attention from both Mazda and vehicle owners. Additional information regarding this issue can be found through the provided links. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-27
- VIN: JM1GJ1V6XE1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When I put the car in park and push the push start/stop button, the car shuts off but the accessories and middle console display stay on. I have to keep shifting the car between the park position and the drive position before I put it back to the park position for the car to completely shut-off. This car is available for inspection. As far as safety is concerned, the only thing I can think of is that if the car does not completely shut off the battery would drain and not be able to start the car. I took the car to my mechanic and he said that I need to take it to the dealer. The dealer was informed and the dealer said that it was not a recall. The car was only inspected by my mechanic. There were no warning lights or messages in the car or symptoms prior to this happening.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-03
- VIN: JM1GJ1U66E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The vehicle wont shut completely off when you press the start/stop button after shifting into "Park". The relay that tells the car it's in Park is faulty and the car wont shut off all the way. This will drain the battery and not allow the driver to lock the doors when they exit the vehicle. This is stranding hazard I've seen lots of YouTube videos and online forum complaints about this problem. It should be added to the recall list
LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-16
- VIN: JM1GJ1V60E1
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Blind side modules have to be replaced. Mazda bulletin BSM indicator flashing dtc u3000 2013-2015 Mazda. No accidents or body damage yet dealers is asking $2100 dollars for repair. 2014 Mazda 6 with 99k miles. BSM is very useful and functional when working and provides an added element of safety.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-10
- VIN: JM1GJ1V68E1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was at a doctor's office and their parking lot has a large slope. I parked facing up the slope and applied the parking brake. When I exited the vehicle, I felt the vehicle slowly sliding backwards. I pushed rearward on the car to check if the brakes were holding which accelerated the roll. I jumped back in the vehicle and depressed the brake pedal to stop the roll. I replaced the rear brake pads and noticed extremely uneven wear. Additionally, the left-rear caliper parking brake actuator was bound-up and wouldn't function. I exercised the actuator to loosen it up a bit which should be just enough until I can order the part. I experienced this same issue with my parking brake in 2017. In 2017, I took the car to the dealer who replace the rear brake calipers under recall 17V393000. I called the dealer today 8/16/2022 and they stated the calipers cannot be replaced under warranty or recall again. I find it extremely disturbing that the parking brake would experience such an extreme failure twice in the 8 years I've owned this vehicle. In 2017, the parking brake released suddenly while the car was unattended sending the car down my 100ft driveway, glancing my house and crashing through a wooden fence before stopping. Luckily, this time (2022), I know of the prior issue and can be proactive about replacing the faulty part. These calipers need a redesign where the calipers can last more than 5 years before such a safety failure... or that the parking brake not functioning while unattended isn't the first indication of failure.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-01
- VIN: JM1GJ1V68E1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Mazda Mazda6. The contact stated while attempting to turn off the vehicle, it was not operating correctly. While the vehicle was parked, it was unable to shut down. The contact would shift back and forth to different gears for the vehicle to shut down correctly. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-24
- VIN: JM1GJ1V60E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Ignition does not turn off when pressing start/stop button draining battery with car completely shutting down while driving, coasting to the side of road almost causing an accident. Second time, car was parked, would not restart, had to get a jumpstart as battery was drained once again. Third time, car wouldn't restart at all and car had to be towed.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
- VIN: JM1GJ1V6XE1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact's son owns a 2014 Mazda Mazda6. The contact stated that while her son was attempting to shift into PARK, the vehicle failed to recognize the gear selected, causing the battery to drain over time. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact was referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-02
- VIN: JM1GJ1V52E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When you turn the car off the accessory stays on. In other words it doesn’t shut off all the way. That is a hazard because the battery will go dead in time. I looked on the internet and found a lot of complaints about this issue with these cars. The car has a defective shifter switch. Mazda won’t recall the part even though there have been many complaints. This is a defective part. If a part is defective they should recall the part. I don’t see why I should have to pay $400.00 to put a $50 part in my car that is defective. My car is available for inspection upon request.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-12
- VIN: jm1gj1w64e1

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-25
- VIN: JM1GJ1U64E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I think it is unfair that a manufacturing problem has been unnoticed and left to people to pay for. I am already paying enough for this car to also have to worry about a manufacturing problem that has been left unattended by the company. This certainly is very dangerous as I might have the cars battery die and have no way of getting immediate help and right now it's just the car not acknowledging the parking mode but what if one day the car starts using the wrong shift unknowingly to me and I end up in a car accident because of this? I wont be able to do anything as this has been left unnoticed and no recall has been made even with the dangers it presents to the driver and the car itself. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-22
- VIN: JM1GJ1U63E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: AS MANY OF US HAVE EXPERIENCED, I ALSO HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE ACCESSORY MODE STAYING ON AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF. BASED ON MY RESEARCH, IT APPEARS TO BE THE PARKING SWITCH INSIDE THE SHIFTER WEARS OFF AND THE CAR DOESN?T REGISTER THE CAR IS IN PARK. MAZDA SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS, AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED BATTERY DRAINAGE AND IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE WITH TIME. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN RIGHT AROUND THE 50-75K MILEAGE, JUST OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY PERIOD. IT JUST SEEMS TOO PREMATURE AND NOT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS AFTER 100K MILES. IT HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS STATIONARY. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-20
- VIN: JM1GJ1U61E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: AS I PUT IN PARK MODE TO TURN OFF (PUSH BUTTON) VEHICLE STAY ON ACCESSORY , RADIO AND ALARM BEEPING STAYS ON AND DOES NOT GO OFF... I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND REVIEWS ON MAZDA 6 & MAZDA CX5 EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM, GOING BACK FROM 2012 AND I JUST HAD A RECALL DONE ON MY CALIPERS, AND THEY SAID THEY REPLACED THE DOOR PADDING BUT NOTHING SHOWED OF NEW MATERIAL. WHEN I ASKED THEM ABOUT THE START /STOP PROBLEM THEY SAID THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM.. TODAY I HAVE BEEN DOING RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM AND READ LOTS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM. WHY IS IT NOT A RECALL ISSUE THEIR HAS BEEN SO MANY COMPLAINTS... THANK YOU FOR READING MY ISSUES. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-14
- VIN: JM1GJ1W50E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I OWN A 2014 MAZDA 6 GRAND TOURING. THE CAR HAS ABOUT 72K MILES ON IT. I BOUGHT THE CAR A YEAR AGO AND STARTING A FEW MONTHS AGO THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN OFF IMMEDIATELY AFTER HITTING THE IGNITION BUTTON. THE CAR PANEL WOULD SAY THAT I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARKING EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS ALREADY IN PARKING MODE. USUALLY I WAS ABLE TO SIMPLY MOVE THE SHIFT STICK A BIT AND IT WOULD ALLOW ME TO TURN THE CAR OFF COMPLETELY. BUT IT HAS GOTTEN WORST OVER TIME AND IT'S BEGINNING TO AFFECT MY BATTERY LIFE. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT MY CAR IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. BASED ON THE INFORMATION I FOUND MANE OF THE 2014 MAZDA 6 MODELS (SPECIFICALLY THOSE MANUFACTURED LATE 2013 AND EARLY 2014) HAVE BEEN SHOWING THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH UNIT. MAZDA FOUND THE PROBLEM AND FIXED IT IN THE NEWER CARS BUT A RECALL WAS NEVER MADE FOR THOSE CARS WITH THE BAD SWITCH UNIT. I TRIED CONTACTING THEIR SUPPORT SYSTEM TODAY AND THEIR ANSWER WAS THAT BECAUSE A RECALL HADN'T BEEN DONE THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I THINK IT IS UNFAIR THAT A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM HAS BEEN UNNOTICED AND LEFT TO PEOPLE TO PAY FOR. I WON'T BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING AS THIS HAS BEEN LEFT UNNOTICED AND NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE EVEN WITH THE DANGERS IT PRESENTS TO THE DRIVER AND THE CAR ITSELF. SOME OF THIS INFORMATIONS WAS FOUND ON HTTPS://MAZDA.OEMDTC.COM/665/IGNITION-DOES-NOT-TURN-OFF-WHEN-PRESSING-STARTSTOP-BUTTON-2013-2014-MAZDA. *TR
2014 Mazda Mazda6 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2014 Mazda Mazda6.
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Components: PARKING BRAKE
- Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Mazda6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3 vehicles. Water could possibly enter the brake caliper causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode and possibly bind.
- Consequence: If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will check the parking brake actuator shafts, replacing any that are corroded, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed August 24, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1217F.
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
- Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured October 25, 2012, to October 10, 2014. If the pressures of four of the tires on an affected vehicle gradually drop at the same time, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may not warn the driver of the drop in pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring System."
- Consequence: A vehicle that is driven with under inflated tires may experience a sudden tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will update the TPMS software, free of charge. The recall began on December 10, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR
- Summary: Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014 Mazda3 vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through December 18, 2013, and model year 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured May 20, 2013, through December 4, 2013, and both equipped with a 2.5L engine and a regenerative engine braking system. When driving the affected vehicles in heavy rain or in deep puddles, the alternator belt may slip causing the Power Control module (PCM) to incorrectly assume failure of the charging system.
- Consequence: Once the PCM assumes that the charging system has failed, the vehicle will stop charging and could result in poor acceleration, loss of steering assist and windshield wiper operation, and a possible engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the PCM with updated software, free of charge. The recall began on May 19, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 7314D.
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
- Summary: Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured October 25, 2012, through May 9, 2013. In the affected vehicles, it is possible to fill the fuel tank beyond its rated capacity.
- Consequence: If the tank is overfilled, gas may flow into the charcoal canister (an evaporative emissions component) and possibly leak from the canister's external vent, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners and dealers will inspect and add an adapter to the shut off valve in the fuel tank and also inspect the charcoal canister for the presence of gasoline, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 19, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 7414D.

The new Mazda 6 is an impressive step forward. The design is ambitious, the build technology is advanced, and the features are highly competitive. Even the sport model is well-equipped and sturdily built. The doors feel solid and the trim and dash are constructed of high-quality, low-gloss materials. However, I did notice a few minor issues during my test drive. As someone who is 6'4

I've been driving my Mazda 6 Grand Touring for a month now and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues so far. This is actually my third Mazda and I decided to purchase it after having such a positive experience with my Miata and CX-9. Before making my final decision, I test drove a BMW 3 series with x-drive and turbo 4 cylinder, Hyundai Genesis, Hyundai Azera, and Mercedes CLA. After careful consideration, I found that the BMW experience was underwhelming for the price and the fact that it required premium fuel. The Genesis was nice but felt heavy and didn't have great fuel economy, plus it was rear-wheel drive. The Mercedes CLA was okay, but I wasn't a fan of the interior. If I were to equip the Mazda 6 with the same features as the CLA, it would cost around $40k.

Congratulations on your new Mazda 6! It sounds like you made a great choice. The handling is impressive and the seats are both soft and supportive, making for a comfortable ride. The stylish design and great fuel economy are also big pluses. It's great to hear that you're getting an average of 37 MPG, which is fantastic for your daily 100-mile commute. The interior room is also a big plus, especially for taller drivers like yourself. It's great that your 6'3

I'm really impressed with the driving dynamics and fuel economy of my 2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv. I was originally planning to get the CX5, but after test driving the Mazda6, I left the dealership with it. This time, I'm getting the 2.5 Skyactiv for more power and torque. The car looks fantastic in pictures, but when I saw my actual car in white pearl, I was blown away. It's a combination of sleek, sexy, and macho upfront. I feel like I'm getting so much for the price. The interior is high-end and classy without being overdone. It's definitely a head-turner. A friend even said it has the presence of the big BMW 5 series.

In February 2014, my husband and I were on the hunt for a new vehicle to replace our 2-year-old Nissan Rogue, which had become a maintenance nightmare before the warranty ran out. We decided that a 4-door sedan was the way to go and narrowed our options down to three contenders: the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, and Mazda6. After discussing our needs and crunching the numbers, we determined the comparison order: 1. Mazda, 2. Ford, 3. Honda (we already owned an Accord coupe and knew it was a strong contender). We visited each local dealership to test drive each vehicle's model packages, from the most basic to fully loaded, including both manual and automatic transmissions. Since I am the most experienced driver and knowledgeable when it comes to cars, including home garage vehicle maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs, my husband and I agreed that I would do the test drives. First up was the Mazda. I was very impressed with the iTouring and Grand Touring from the first impression. I got in the driver's seat of the iTouring Manual with my husband in the passenger seat and the salesman in the back seat, and carefully drove us to an empty 1/4 mile road. I got to 60mph in 2nd gear without redlining, all the while entertaining my husband and terrifying the salesman. Then, I took a few corners at 30mph, accelerating out of the curve, which the car handled quite easily. Next came the Grand Touring, which only came in an automatic. I liked the creature comforts, like the impressive Bose sound system. However, the automatic was sluggish and disappointing. So, the iTouring was the clear winner. Onto the Ford Fusion... this was a very short test drive. I test drove each model and was disappointed with each one. There was so much road noise, steering wheel feedback, and crappy braking.I was a bit surprised with the result considering the ratios that we had on the Fusion suggested that it would be a great performer. However, after trying out the Honda Accord, we found that it was a great performer as well, although it didn't handle cornering quite as well as the Mazda. Even the fully loaded V6 had a lot of power, but it was actually turned off by all of the in-cab technology. As a mechanical engineer, my father always said, 'Always go for the simple design. It's the least likely to fail.' The iTouring Mazda6 won because it did what I wanted when I wanted it and didn't distract me, and had just enough creature comforts to make me happy. Fast forward to now, it's 2018, and the Mazda6 still handles just as perfectly as it did from day one of ownership. The only issue we have run into was the Bluetooth system failed and had to be replaced under warranty in 2016. I'll be taking it in for its first brake job soon. Houston driving conditions can be brutal on a car; however, we've been impressed with how well our Mazda6 has held up. We'll be replacing our Honda Accord Coupe next year. My husband wants to get the Mazda3 automatic with the 2.5 engine that's in the Mazda6, as he commutes and the tight clutch can be exhausting in stop-and-go traffic. An update on our Mazda6: we still own it, and it continues to run like new. The only repair that surprised us was the Bluetooth/Radio module going bad while still under warranty. We had it replaced at no charge or ridiculous questions (unlike some automakers). It's great having a manual transmission. It's almost like an additional security feature considering so few know how to handle a manual. We're almost done paying the note. Although my husband and I want a truck, we commute, so we might be getting another Mazda.

I had a disappointing experience with my Mazda. The air conditioning stopped working when the car was just a year old and it took three trips to the repair shop to get it fixed. Additionally, my BSM blind spot monitoring system stopped working around 18 months and it cost me $1300 to get it repaired. Recently, I noticed that the finish on my 'premium rims' is peeling off. It's frustrating that maintaining these issues can be expensive. The only thing that still works in my technology package is the garage door opener. I was disappointed to find out that there was a factory defect on the finish of my rims and Mazda did not issue a recall. I inquired about my rims every time I went in for service, but it wasn't until I hit the 100k mile mark that they admitted to the defect. Unfortunately, they won't do anything about mine because it has over 100k miles. Overall, I had a negative experience with my Mazda and I don't plan on purchasing another one.
