Common 2008 Nissan Xterra problems
The Nissan Xterra, produced between 2005 and 2008, is known for several common problems that can affect its performance and reliability. Here are the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints:
- Defective Fuel Level Sensor: Many Nissan Xterra owners have reported inaccurate fuel gauge readings due to faulty fuel level sensors. This issue is prevalent in the 2001-2011 Xterra models. A defective fuel level sensor can cause the engine to stall or the vehicle to run out of gas quickly, especially in fast-moving traffic or on the highway. This problem is caused by a design flaw in the sensor, which may not accurately measure the fuel level in the tank.
- Failed Transmission: Transmission failure is a common problem in the Nissan Xterra, particularly in the 2005 model year. This issue is often caused by the radiator leak, which can cause coolant to mix with the transmission fluid, reducing its potency and increasing the rate of corrosion in the transmission. This can lead to erratic engine behavior, excessive grinding and noise during gear changes, gear slippage, and visible fluid leaks accompanied by a burning smell. Rebuilding or replacing the transmission is very expensive.
- Faulty Timing Chain: Several Nissan Xterra models have struggled with bad timing chains. A defective timing chain can cause a high-pitched whine coming from the engine, indicating a problem. This issue is prevalent in the 2006 model year, and the cost of repairing it can be very high.
- Fuel Injector Failure: Several Nissan Xterra models have experienced fuel injector failure, which can cause engine misfires, loss of power, hesitation when accelerating, and excessive vibrations. The check engine light will come on when the vehicle detects a bad fuel injector.
In conclusion, the Nissan Xterra models produced between 2005 and 2008 have several common problems that can affect their performance and reliability. These issues include radiator leaks, defective fuel level sensors, failed transmissions, faulty timing chains, and fuel injector failure. While these problems can be costly to repair, being aware of them can help owners take preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of these issues occurring. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify potential problems early on, allowing for timely repairs and reducing the risk of more severe damage.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-12
- VIN: 5N1AN08WX8C
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: A leak developed in the radiator that allowed engine coolant into the automatic transmission and visa versa. Engine coolant in the automatic transmission can cause sudden failure of the transmission which could cause an accident. This is a known design flaw of Nissan transmissions. Nissan has refused to issue a recall and class actions have been successful, but are not extensive enough to cover all Nissan buyers. I have filed a complaint with Nissan and they offered zero help in covering repairs. They just say that it is out of warranty. I had my Xterra worked on at the dealer 18 months ago and they could have recommended a new part be installed to keep the transmission failure from occuring, but said nothing. The result is that now I have to replace the transmission and radiator at a $9,000.00 price tag out of my pocket because they refused to recall the parts (<$1000.00) involved and will not give owners any warning or guidance on how to prevent this totally preventable catastrophic transmission failure. Nissan Case # 46218952.

- VIN: 5N1AN08WX8C
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Total transmission and radiator failure. a dealership "fixed" the coolant contamination problem when nissan offered the warrantied coverage for what's known as SMOD. all the dealership did was flush the transmission and radiator. they did not repair or replace any components even after being berated by my husband to do so and to do it under the covered warranty.($5k for tranny replacement that we couldn't afford) they claimed the flush had fixed the xterra. less than 3,000 miles later I was driving on the highway with my 2 children in the car and the vehicle just shut off. no warning lights or behaviors just shut off at 70+mph on the highway. while sitting broke down [pulled off highway edge as far as I could after vehicle died and before it coasted to a complete stop] we were then rear-ended and my 2 kids spent 2 days being monitored in a children's hospital. 1 of which had a concussion. although the xterra only needed a new rear hatch and bumper and etc insurance didn't consider it totalled so it was cosmetically repaired. after reaching out to nissan about the incident they refused to even offer us any sort of discounted repair costs on tranny replacement[car was still under extended coverage warranty] nor would they offer any kind of anything regarding a discount on a replacement vehicle. so here we were still paying on a car loan for a car that was still under warranty, but could not be drove. or even starred for that matter. it ended up wrecking us financially. the car never showed any signs of any mechanical problems prior to dealer flushing trans. the car didn't show any signs of anything afterwards until that day on the highway. the problem ended up being metal pieces from coolant contamination shorted out something in transmission and I guess shorted so strong that it blew the trans fuse and blew fuse links on positive terminal which caused car to just shut off. nissan needs to take responsibility for their bullcrap.

I DECIDED TO TAKE IT HOME BECAUSE IT WAS A BIG DECISION TO MAKE RIGHT AWAY. SO HERE I AM WITH A CAR THAT MISSED THE LAWSUIT AS I HAVE AN XTERRA THAT IS 11 YEARS OLD [!@#$%] NEAR 200000 MILES. I DID MY OWN MAINTENANCE, WHEN REPLACING MY HEAD GASKET I NOTICED I HAD THE NO CARBON BUILD UP ON THE HEAD, BASICALLY LOOKED LIKE A CAR THAT HAD 20000 MILES ON IT. SHAME ON NISSAN FOR NOT DOING A RECALL OR NOTIFYING OWNERS OF THIS ISSUE. I LOVE MY XTERRA BUT I'M SURE THE COST OF THE FIX IS ROUGHLY WHAT THE CAR IS WORTH. I've had my XTerra for almost 1.5 years now and I have never regretted buying it. Although, I do feel like the dealership may have overcharged me a bit. It's a fun car to drive, but can be a bit bumpy on uneven roads, so it may not be the best choice for those with back problems. I often take long trips and while the gas mileage isn't great, it's not terrible either. On the highway, I can usually get about 360 miles on a single tank. The air conditioning is decent, but during the hot Louisiana summers, it could be better. There are a few features that I wish it had, like a lockable gas tank, but the dealer advised against it due to potential sealing issues. Also, the antenna can't be pushed in and the sound system leaves something to be desired.

The 08 Xterra Off Road is a fantastic SUV for those of us who use it like a sport utility vehicle. It has the ability to go almost anywhere you want it to. Although it rides more like a truck than other SUVs, it also looks less like a minivan than other SUVs. You also feel like you're in a truck, which adds to the overall experience. The ground clearance is impressive (no sharp corners anymore) and the seats make you feel like you need to duck when going into the garage. The horsepower is more than enough for daily use. This is truly a rough and rugged truck. However, the estimated gas mileage has been a bit disappointing. Although the sticker says 16/20, it's more like 12/16. I get 15-16 at best on the highway.

I'm glad to hear that you found a vehicle that meets all of your needs! After considering the Toyota FJ, which may not be the best fit for a family, you came across the Xterra FJ comparison on Edmunds and ultimately decided to purchase the X manual 6 spd. It sounds like you're really enjoying the ride - the vehicle is comfortable, has great visibility, and is fun to drive. From your perspective, the interior is more than sufficient for your needs, and you don't see any issues with the quality of the materials used. Overall, it seems like you're very happy with your purchase!

I'm so glad to hear that you're completely satisfied! With the Xterra's go-anywhere capability, you can go canoeing virtually anywhere and return to your family feeling great and fully enabled. You can even make yourself a mat for the back for less than $20! The Xterra's solid build quality, versatile nature, and aggressive looks make it a must-drive if you're in the market. It's a vehicle that truly delivers on its promise - it can take you wherever you want to go.

I live in New England and used to own a Ford Mustang, but after a really bad snow storm last December, I decided that owning a 4X4 vehicle is a must. So, I purchased the Xterra and what a fun SUV to drive! Coming from a smaller car, I was worried about its size and visibility, but after only a week of driving it, it felt like I had been driving it forever. It is fast on the highway and quick to respond in city traffic, with smooth acceleration and great braking. Not to mention, the 4X4 performance in snowy conditions is impressive. Its gas mileage has improved significantly from about 14mi/g to almost 17mi/g (I now have 3k miles on it). I truly like it!

I've only owned this vehicle for about a month, but I quickly realized that it is a fantastic vehicle. I test drove Jeep Grands and 4 Runners, but I found that the Xterra is the perfect choice. As someone who has always driven Toyotas in the past, I can confidently say that the Xterra is a great alternative for those who don't want to spend too much money. My advice is to save your money and get the Xterra. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done and has everything you need and nothing you don't.

I have been a Maxima owner for the last 10 years, but I recently made the switch to this truck. I am starting a business this spring and needed something with towing capabilities. I am hopeful that this truck will be up to the task. While the ride is nice for a truck, it can be uncomfortable for long drives, which I do every day. Additionally, the armrest requires me to twist my body to use it, but the seats are okay. Over bumps, the roof rattles, and the stereo is not even close to the BOSE in my Maxima. Adjusting to having fewer creature comforts has taken some time, but I do like the truck. It handles snow with ease, and I hardly noticed when I towed my 20ft boat with it this summer. I am optimistic that it will be at least half as good as my Maxima.
