The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.

After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).

After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

Common 2009 Land rover Lr2 problems

The 2009 Land Rover LR2 is a small SUV that offers a comfortable ride and advanced technology for off-road capabilities. However, there are several common problems that owners have reported with this vehicle.

One issue is with the engine's fuel economy. Despite having a relatively small displacement of 3.2 liters, the engine doesn't do particularly well on fuel economy. The EPA rates it at 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, but actual mileage may vary. For example, one owner reported that their tank average calculation showed 15.4 mpg for mixed city and freeway driving, even though the trip computer stayed between 19.2 mpg and 19.8 mpg the entire time they had the car.

Another issue is with the suspension. Some owners have reported that the LR2 tends to lose stability when hitting bumps, particularly on the right side. This may be due to issues with the struts, especially in the rear. One owner reported that they felt like struts were the culprit, and recommended checking the front control arms as well.

A third issue is with the Bluetooth system. Some owners have reported that the Bluetooth system can be finicky, and may not work properly after pushing the button once. For example, one owner reported that they pushed the button once when driving the car on a dead battery, and the screen flashed on and off several times before stopping working altogether. They speculated that it might be a fuse, but were not sure.

In addition to these specific issues, there are several other maintenance items that owners of the 2009 Land Rover LR2 should be aware of. For example, the brakes may need to be replaced, and a nice brake upgrade is NAPA premium rotors and Akebono ceramic pads. The coolant system may also need to be replaced, especially if the car has over 120,000 miles on it. This is particularly important if the car is being relied on for long road trips, as failure of any of the gearboxes could be costly.

Overall, the 2009 Land Rover LR2 is a capable small SUV that offers advanced technology for off-road capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it is important for owners to be aware of common problems and maintenance items in order to keep the car running smoothly.

Are Land Rover LR2 expensive to maintain?

Land Rover maintenance and repair costs by model

Of the models that RepairPal has data for, the LR2 is the most budget-friendly Land Rover, costing owners an average of $895 per year in maintenance and repairs.

Do Land Rovers have mechanical problems?

Sadly, Range Rover models are haunted by a reputation for lackluster reliability. Cynical critics say used models are known for “typical British engineering,” which translates into leaks, breakdowns, and other mechanical and electrical issues compounded by unusual malfunctions.

Why is my 2009 Land Rover LR2 not starting?

The most common reasons a Land Rover LR2 won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

How many miles will a Land Rover LR2 last?

Land Rovers have an average life span of 13 years or 200,000 miles when well cared for. Land Rover is the least reliable brand of car. Repair and maintenance fees for high-end cars like Land Rovers are often high.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-25
  • VIN: SALFT24N09H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THE LR2 WAS DRIVEN BY OUR DAUGHTER FOR SEVERAL YEARS, PRIMARILY HIGHWAY MILEAGE TO AND FROM COLLEGE. IN EARLY 2015 THE ROVER BEGAN TO MAKE A WHINING NOISE FROM THE REAR AXLE. OVER THE COURSE OF TWO OR THREE WEEKS THE NOISE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. AFTER SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT, LAND ROVER INDICATED THAT WE HAD A DAMAGED REAR DIFFERENTIAL THAT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR APPROXIMATELY $2500.00. I'VE OWNED A FAIR NUMBER OF VEHICLES AND DO KNOW A NUMBER OF AUTO MECHANICS. NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE EVER HEARD OF REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILING AT APPROXIMATELY 50K MILES. I PRESSED THE SERVICE MANAGER FOR AN ANSWER AND HE REFERRED ME TO THE MAIN HEADQUARTERS OF LAND ROVER. THEY REFUSED REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY AND FAILED TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR THE REPAIR. ONCE AGAIN PRESSING THE SERVICE MANAGER, THE OPTION TO REPAIR AND NOT FULLY REPLACE THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS OFFERED WITH A 10% DEALER DISCOUNT. IT IS APPARENT FROM GOOGLE SEARCHES THAT THIS REAR DIFFERENTIAL DESIGN FLAW IS WELL KNOWN TO LAND ROVER AND COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED THROUGH INCREASED MAINTENANCE. IT IS NOW A MONEY MAKER FOR LAND ROVER ON THEIR LOWER END VEHICLES.

  • VIN: SALFR24NX9H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY 2009 LAND ROVER LR2, HAS SOUNDED VERY LOUD WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I THOUGHT IT MAY HAVE JUST BEEN A TIRE ISSUE THAT THEY WERE OLD AND NEEDED ROTATED OR REPLACED. WHILE MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR AN ALARM SYSTEM REPAIR THE DEALERSHIP DID A MULTIPOINT INSPECTION. THEY SAID NOTHING WAS LEAKING OR IMMEDIATELY WRONG BUT I SHOULD GET IT BACK IN FOR A MORE THOROUGH INSPECTION. I DID AND FOUND MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL NEEDS REPLACED. FROM RESEARCHING I HAVE FOUND THIS HIS BEEN A WIDESPREAD AND KNOWN ISSUE DATING BACK TO THE 2008 MODEL. *TR

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-02
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: REAR DIFFERENTIAL WENT AT 47K MILES! STARTED HEARING A HUMMING NOISE ON ACCELERATION THAT PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE OVER THE NEXT MONTH. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ONLINE, FINDING OUT THAT MANY PEOPLE WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AROUND 50K MILES AND THAT IT WAS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. I CALLED LAND ROVER EXPLAINING THE PROBLEM, BUT BECAUSE I WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ENTIRE COST. BUT BEFORE THEY COULD DO ANYTHING, I NEEDED TO BRING THE CAR IN AND PAY $125 SO THEY COULD PUT THE CAR ON THE LIFT AND CONFIRM IT WAS IN FACT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. IF IT WAS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL IT WOULD COST AROUND $2500-3000! I EXPLAINED THAT THIS ISSUE IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON THE INTERNET, IN MULTIPLE LAND ROVER FORUMS AND FOR A MAJORITY OF PEOPLE IT IS HAPPENING JUST AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT, THE PART HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. I ENDED UP TAKING THE CAR TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM (FOR FREE!) AND CHARGED ME $1800. HE GOT THE PART FROM LAND ROVER, IT COST 1250 AND ADDITIONAL 100 FOR THE FLUID/OIL THAT WAS NEEDED, OTHERWISE THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY WOULD BE VOIDED. LAND ROVER YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SHOULD NOT GO ON A 5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE WITH ONLY 47K MILES! I ONLY DRIVE LOCALLY TO AND FROM WORK, AND HAVE NEVER DRIVEN THE VEHICLE OFF ROAD! THIS SHOULD BE COVERED. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-12-19
  • VIN: SALFT24NX9H
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW IN 2009 ( WAS USED AS A RETIRED LOANER FOR 4 MONTHS- HAD 7000 MILES ON IT WHEN BOUGHT) HAD THIS FOR 5 YEARS NOW, IS A LOW MILEAGE AT 59000, WOULD ONLY USE THIS TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK/HOME, DID NOT EVER ENGAGE IN ANY OFF ROADING AT ALL NOT ONCE, HAD ONLY USED THIS TERRAIN RESPONSE FEATURE MAYBE FEW TIMES IN THE LAST 2-3 WINTERS ( WHEN WE HAD SNOW); ALL THE SUDDEN I NOTICED, A LIGHT SAYING TERRAIN RESPONSE SYSTEM DE-ACTIVATED...I DON'T REMEMBER DOING OR PUSHING ANY BUTTON PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT, SO I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO LAND ROVER IN ORLAND PARK- THEY TOLD ME THAT THE TERRAIN RESPONSE SYSTEM HAD FAILED; THEY COULDN'T TELL ME WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH PROBLEM. THE TERRAIN RESPONSE SYSTEM IS NOT A WEAR AND TEAR THING, IT IS A SAFETY FEATURE THAT HAS FAILED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I BROUGHT UP A CASE TO THE HEAD OFFICE OF LAND ROVER OF AMERICA AND THEY REFUSE TO LOOK FURTHER INTO THIS PROBLEM, SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT; LAND ROVER IS OVER-RATED, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE AGAIN. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-04
  • VIN: SALFR24N69H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AT APPROXIMATELY 64000 MILES MY 2009 LAND ROVER LR2 REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILED. I NOTICED A LOUD, HIGH PITCHED, HUMMING SOUND WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS. THIS SOUND PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE. IT IS SO LOUD NOW THAT YOU CANNOT TALK AT A NORMAL LEVEL WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING. LAND ROVER DIAGNOSED THIS ISSUE AND CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM. THERE IS A TECHNICAL BULLETIN THAT LR HAS DISTRIBUTED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. THEY ARE AWARE OF IT AND ARE NOT OFFERING CUSTOMERS ANY COMPENSATION. THIS PROBLEM IS PERVASIVE THROUGHOUT THIS MODEL YEAR AND 2008 LR2S - LAND ROVER SHOULD BE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ISSUE, RECALLING THOSE CARS AFFECTED, AND PROTECTING THEIR DRIVERS. *TR

TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-16
  • VIN: SALFR24N69H
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2009 LAND ROVER LR2 ON THE HIGHWAY, MY TIRE BLEW OUT. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM - THAT CAME WITH THE CAR, INSTALLED BY LAND ROVER - HAD CORRODED AND CAUSED THE TIRE TO COLLAPSE. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS AS MY TIRE WENT FROM FULL TO EMPTY AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I REPLACED THE TIRE AND TPMS. A FEW MONTHS LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHILE AGAIN DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY. I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND FORTUNATELY WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER WITHOUT INCIDENT. UPON INVESTIGATION, ALL THREE REMAINING LAND ROVER TPMS HAD CORRODED AND WHILE ONE HAD COLLAPSED, THE OTHER TWO WERE VULNERABLE. WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS, DANGEROUS ISSUE. LAND ROVER SHOULD BE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY, PROTECTING ITS' DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS, AND ISSUING A RECALL. *TR

THE PROBLEM RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

REF SERVICE BULLETIN NO.: TB-0081, ENGINE VENT HOSE COOLANT LEAK.COOLANT LEAK CAUSED THE FAILURE OF THE ALTERNATOR AGAIN, THIS TIME LEAVING MY CHILD STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD! GULF COAST LAND ROVER REPAIRED THE LEAK AND ALTERNATOR IN 2012 AT A COST OF $1122. BUT, DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM SO HERE I GO AGAIN! I WILL HAVE TO PAY TO TOW THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR AND LAND ROVER WILL CHARGE ME A BLOODY FORTUNE TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE VENT HOSE (AND ALTERNATOR) THAT DAMAGED THE ALTERNATOR WITH ANOTHER HOSE THAT WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL! *TR

TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-10
  • VIN: SALFT24N89H
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: TPMS SENSOR / VALVE STEM MADE OF ALUMINUM TYPE METAL. CRACKED IN HALF AND FELL OUT DUE TO CORROSION. RESULTED IN IMMEDIATE FLAT TIRE WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO RIDE ON DAMAGE. BOTH WIFE AND KIDS STRANDED IN CAR UNTIL I COULD CHANGE TO SPARE. BOTH LAND ROVER AND DEALER IN EDISON DENY KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS FAILURE AND INSIST IT IS THE FIRST OF IT'S KIND. I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE. THEY SHOULD PAY FOR A NEW TIRE AND 4 NEW SENSORS TO BE INSTALLED. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. *TR

POWER TRAIN,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-28
  • VIN: SALFR24N89H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS
  • Summary: I BEGAN HEARING A LOUD HUMMING NOISE ON A 2009 LAND ROVER LR2 THAT WAS COMING FROM THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. THE PITCH IS LOW AT LOWER SPEEDS AND THE PITCH GETS HIGHER AS THE SPEED INCREASES. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL PINION BEARING/GEAR WAS WORN AND FLOPPING. THE SUGGESTED REPAIRS WERE AT LEAST A REAR DIFFERENTIAL REBUILD BUT MAY NEED AN ENTIRE UNIT IF DAMAGED BEYOND REBUILDING. A REBUILD WAS ESTIMATED TO COST $1600 AND A TOTAL UNIT REPLACEMENT WAS QUOTED AT $2600. THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT THE DRIVESHAFT MAY BREAK OFF AT ANYTIME. MY RESEARCH WITH THIS VEHICLE INDICATES THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT WILL EVENTUALLY HAPPEN IN ALL VEHICLES BETWEEN 2008 AND 2012. THERE IS EVEN A SERVICE BULLETIN CIRCULATING THROUGH LAND ROVER DEALERSHIPS TO NOTIFY SERVICE DEPARTMENTS OF THE PROBLEM AND THE PARTS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE REPAIR. I'M CONCERNED THAT A VEHICLE WITH SO FEW MILES COULD HAVE A COMMON CATASTROPHIC FAILURE ACROSS MANY MODEL YEARS. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD ENDANGER OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD AND THE OCCUPANT OF THIS VEHICLE. LAND ROVER IS CLEARLY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE CIRCULATION OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN BUT NOT RECALLING AND REPAIRING. I'M DISAPPOINTED WITH THE ETHICAL DECISIONS THIS COMPANY IS MAKING. *TR

Negative 2009 Land rover Lr2 car reviews

  1. Bell Torphy 2024-11-14

The car is only 30 days old, yet it has already been in for service three times. The first two times were due to a faulty passenger seat airbag sensor, and now it has refused to start three times in just two days, with the check engine and battery lights coming on. Unfortunately, LR didn't have the P/N for the part that needed to be replaced, which resulted in a 2.5 week wait. However, LR eventually shipped the part all the way from the UK. While the price of the LR2 was great, it seems that the saying 'you get what you pay for' may apply. Despite this, we are still hopeful that the LR2 will meet our expectations.

  2. Jackson Olson 2024-11-12

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to kindly bring to your attention that it may be a good idea to have the rear end of your car checked. When we purchased our car at 90,000 miles, we unfortunately had to replace the rear end. It seems to be a common issue with these vehicles. After spending $3,500, we were able to fix the issue and now have a car worth $8,000, which we purchased for $11,500. Additionally, we've noticed some issues with the interior falling apart and the sunroof leaking. We hope that Land Rover will take action to address these issues. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter!

  3. Darryl Barrows 2024-10-28

I have experienced several issues with my Land Rover, including the car cutting out while driving, the gas gauge malfunctioning, and the car staying on even after removing the key. Unfortunately, these issues have resulted in the car being bought back as a lemon. While I have had a difficult experience, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another Land/Range Rover in the future.

  4. Moshe Hoppe 2024-10-01

The Land Rover we owned was a stunning car, with a cool orange color. However, we experienced several issues with it, including breaking down in seven different states from NC to CA. Despite the sporadic dealer locations, we had to pay for pricey services frequently. Additionally, the car's interior felt cheaply put together, with everything rattling inside and wind noise making it difficult to ride in silence after just 20k miles. While it may be a great car to look at, it is not dependable for everyday use.

  5. Bernhard Kilback 2024-09-22

When I first saw this car, I was immediately drawn to its sleek exterior, luxurious interior, and numerous extra features. At the time, I was considering the VW Touareg, but I had concerns about its reliability. Unfortunately, my fears were unfounded, as the LR2 has been nothing but trouble. It seems like every other week, I have to take it to the dealer for electrical problems that they can't seem to fix. The engine and transmission faults keep flashing on the dashboard, and the tailgate has gotten stuck more than once. It's been a huge disappointment, especially considering how much money I spent on it. I wouldn't trust it for long journeys.

Positive 2009 Land rover Lr2 car reviews

  1. Jaydon Herzog 2024-11-19

This car is so much fun to drive! It handles great on the highway and is very capable off-road. I've taken it through mud, deep snow, and dirt roads, and it handles like a champ. Don't let its Lexus-like appearance fool you, the LR2 can really go off-road. And after 6000 miles, I haven't had any problems. It seems to be put together really well.

  2. Pedro Mills 2024-10-13

Congratulations on your new purchase! I know it may seem like a lot with 220,000 km on it, but it sounds like you made a wise decision by considering the previous owner's maintenance. It's great to hear that the car has been consistently maintained and has very little rust. Despite some necessary repairs, it's still driving just as well, if not better, than the day you bought it. Enjoy your awesome new car!

  3. Jameson O'Keefe 2024-09-08

This car is an excellent value for your money. I have had no issues with it so far and it feels very well-built. It is also a joy to drive, with enough power to drive it sportily without feeling uncomfortable or unsafe. The Alpine Dolby Surround stereo system is fantastic and the Bluetooth connects right away to any of my phones (although it could be a bit louder). The navigation is terrific, although the updates can be a bit pricey. The brakes are great (especially with the 19

  4. Rolando Reichel 2024-08-17

I've always had beaters, but when I had a chunk of money, I fell in love with a car that wasn't on the list of acceptable cars to buy because of its style. Now, 120K later and about 7k maintenance, I still love this car and would recommend it to anyone. In fact, I'm even thinking about buying another one of the same year just because I love the style and shape of it!

I just bought my LR2 last week and I absolutely love it! This is actually my second LR and I have to say, it looks great, handles great, and I feel incredibly safe in it. Of course, being a Land Rover, there may be some quirks, but the dealership is wonderful and really takes care of both the cars and their customers. I have to admit, I'm completely smitten!
