The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.

After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).

After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

  • Summary: I have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 in mint condition and regularly maintained by a Land Rover dealer and purchased new from a LR dealer in Pittsburgh. It only has 39K miles and always parked indoors. Last year I noticed a humming, grinding sound coming from the rear wheels.I took it twice to the Fort Myers Florida LR dealer for service but they could not find the problem other than that the differential needed flushing (unusual for 39K miles). Finally took it to LR dealer two weeks ago in Naples, Florida and it was determined that the rear differential needed replacement. It was explained to me by the Asst. Service Mgr. that it was not safe to drive as the wheels could seize and cause an accident. No warning lamps indicated the problem. Land Rover refused to pay for replacement ($10K quoted cost) citing 4 year warranty period was over despite way below 50K mile warranty. Discovered over 30 similar problems reported on LR2 model on "carcomplaints.com".

  • Summary: My 2014 Land Rover LR2 HSE STARTED SMELLING STRONGLY OF FUEL IN LATE APRIL,2022. I contacted LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER RELATIONS ON 5/2/22 about the problem. Cris Willis opened Case# 8000998446 to assist me. He stated it was a recall issue awaiting parts to become active. Then on 6/15 Cris W. contacted me again requesting I make appt. with my local LR dealer and now they could inspect car and replace any defective parts. On 6/21 I messaged Cris that I had made appt. For 6/23. Cris messaged me back that Ft. Myers LR dealer would resolve issue with no problem at all. When I brought my car into service manager. He had my car inspected and found fuel sending unit cover was leaking and needed to be replaced. Cost for fuel sending unit cover and gasket with labor and taxes, etc. would be $1970.09. He said my car had left two fuel puddles in service area and was a dangerous safety issue but my VIN # was not in recall and repairs would be at my expense.I declined repair and immediately called LR North America customer relations speaking with Cris W. and his supervisor, Jennifer. Both told me they would try to work with managers at Ft. Myers and Naples LR dealers to encourage them to help me by covering all or part of the repair cost. I never heard back from them or anyone at LR Customer Relations. My daughter did file a complaint with NHTSA on 6/23 for my car but I would like to file my own complaint because of the serious safety issue which LR fails to address in any substantive or helpful way. I have taken my car to a third party auto service facility because I was told it was too dangerous to drive by by LR Customer Relations and their Ft. Myers LR service manager. Please accept this complaint so that some won’t be injured or killed by this serious safety issue which is similar / related to NHTSA Recall#N623. Thank you for assisting in protecting other LR owners, especially those of older models who may be jeopardy because of these defective parts.

Latest negative Land rover Lr2 car reviews

  1. Gaylord Nicolas 2025-02-19

    Vehicle year: 2009

Congratulations on your purchase! I'm glad you didn't let negative reviews discourage you from taking a test drive and making your own decision. The LR2 is a sturdy vehicle that handles well and provides a comfortable ride, even on rough city streets. It's great to hear that you were able to navigate through a snowstorm with ease. The interior is well-designed, although some of the controls may take some getting used to. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I look forward to hearing more updates in the future!

  2. Jerrod Dicki 2025-02-03

    Vehicle year: 2011

The LR2 was my first choice because of the styling taken from its big brother, the Range Rover Sport. However, after renting it, I realized that it may not be the best fit for me. While it has robust off-road capability and can do about 90% of what its larger counterpart can do, the body roll is significant and it presents a problem when passing on the highway. Additionally, the seats are small and hard, and the interior is pretty basic with limited cargo space. It may not be the best option for bringing your buddies and their gear on an outing. Overall, it's a decent car, but it may not be the right fit for everyone.

  3. Winston Sauer 2025-02-01

    Vehicle year: 2009

Hi there! It looks like you're experiencing some issues with your radiator, hoses, heater core, and coolant. Let's see how we can help you out!

  4. Keith Dare 2025-01-26

    Vehicle year: 2012

I've owned this vehicle since May of 2011 and have enjoyed it until August of 2015 when electronic problems began to arise. Unfortunately, the fuel gauge/range display began to fluctuate from accurate to immediately dropping to E/0 miles of range, then go back and forth. When the check engine light came on, I knew it was time to get it serviced. Only the dealer could do the work, which cost around $3000. Two months later, the seat belt and airbag warning light came on, so I went back to the dealer. After diagnosis, it was discovered that there was a faulty sensor in the seat and the seat needed to be replaced at a cost of $1600. While this was frustrating, I am now considering selling the vehicle and finding something more reliable.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that during your 600 mile highway trip, your MPG was 27! That's pretty impressive. So far, in the city, you're getting about 22 MPG. Keep up the good work!

Hi there! Just wanted to share that we sold our little 2011 LR2 in June 2020 and bought a 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport. We owned the LR2 for 6 years and it was a great experience. We usually keep our cars for 3-5 years, but this one was special. It only let us down twice - once for a battery and then for a starter. Considering it was the original one and had 9 years and 125,000 miles on it, we think it did pretty well. Overall, we highly recommend them!

Congratulations on your first car purchase after completing school! It sounds like you made a great choice with this SUV, which has impressive off-road capabilities and performs well on the freeway. While it may be smaller than other Land Rovers, it still offers all-terrain modes found in more expensive models. The regular maintenance you've done, such as oil changes, air filter changes, and coolant changes, are important to keep your car running smoothly. The only downside you mentioned is that the Bluetooth feature only allows for making calls, not playing music from your phone. Overall, it sounds like you have a reliable and versatile vehicle that will serve you well.

This is an excellent value. The vehicle maneuvers like no other, and the engine is still very strong without burning oil. Although we have had some smaller issues, which cost us $3000 out of pocket after the warranty expired, we have no complaints. The car is paid for, looks great, and runs superbly. I would buy another LR2 in a flash.
