The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.

After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).

After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

  • Summary: I have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 in mint condition and regularly maintained by a Land Rover dealer and purchased new from a LR dealer in Pittsburgh. It only has 39K miles and always parked indoors. Last year I noticed a humming, grinding sound coming from the rear wheels.I took it twice to the Fort Myers Florida LR dealer for service but they could not find the problem other than that the differential needed flushing (unusual for 39K miles). Finally took it to LR dealer two weeks ago in Naples, Florida and it was determined that the rear differential needed replacement. It was explained to me by the Asst. Service Mgr. that it was not safe to drive as the wheels could seize and cause an accident. No warning lamps indicated the problem. Land Rover refused to pay for replacement ($10K quoted cost) citing 4 year warranty period was over despite way below 50K mile warranty. Discovered over 30 similar problems reported on LR2 model on "carcomplaints.com".

  • Summary: My 2014 Land Rover LR2 HSE STARTED SMELLING STRONGLY OF FUEL IN LATE APRIL,2022. I contacted LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER RELATIONS ON 5/2/22 about the problem. Cris Willis opened Case# 8000998446 to assist me. He stated it was a recall issue awaiting parts to become active. Then on 6/15 Cris W. contacted me again requesting I make appt. with my local LR dealer and now they could inspect car and replace any defective parts. On 6/21 I messaged Cris that I had made appt. For 6/23. Cris messaged me back that Ft. Myers LR dealer would resolve issue with no problem at all. When I brought my car into service manager. He had my car inspected and found fuel sending unit cover was leaking and needed to be replaced. Cost for fuel sending unit cover and gasket with labor and taxes, etc. would be $1970.09. He said my car had left two fuel puddles in service area and was a dangerous safety issue but my VIN # was not in recall and repairs would be at my expense.I declined repair and immediately called LR North America customer relations speaking with Cris W. and his supervisor, Jennifer. Both told me they would try to work with managers at Ft. Myers and Naples LR dealers to encourage them to help me by covering all or part of the repair cost. I never heard back from them or anyone at LR Customer Relations. My daughter did file a complaint with NHTSA on 6/23 for my car but I would like to file my own complaint because of the serious safety issue which LR fails to address in any substantive or helpful way. I have taken my car to a third party auto service facility because I was told it was too dangerous to drive by by LR Customer Relations and their Ft. Myers LR service manager. Please accept this complaint so that some won’t be injured or killed by this serious safety issue which is similar / related to NHTSA Recall#N623. Thank you for assisting in protecting other LR owners, especially those of older models who may be jeopardy because of these defective parts.

Latest negative Land rover Lr2 car reviews

  1. Wyman Muller 2024-11-17

    Vehicle year: 2015

Hi there! It looks like you're experiencing some issues with your radiator, hoses, heater core, and coolant. Let's see how we can help you out!

  2. Bell Torphy 2024-11-14

    Vehicle year: 2009

The car is only 30 days old, yet it has already been in for service three times. The first two times were due to a faulty passenger seat airbag sensor, and now it has refused to start three times in just two days, with the check engine and battery lights coming on. Unfortunately, LR didn't have the P/N for the part that needed to be replaced, which resulted in a 2.5 week wait. However, LR eventually shipped the part all the way from the UK. While the price of the LR2 was great, it seems that the saying 'you get what you pay for' may apply. Despite this, we are still hopeful that the LR2 will meet our expectations.

  3. Jackson Olson 2024-11-12

    Vehicle year: 2009

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to kindly bring to your attention that it may be a good idea to have the rear end of your car checked. When we purchased our car at 90,000 miles, we unfortunately had to replace the rear end. It seems to be a common issue with these vehicles. After spending $3,500, we were able to fix the issue and now have a car worth $8,000, which we purchased for $11,500. Additionally, we've noticed some issues with the interior falling apart and the sunroof leaking. We hope that Land Rover will take action to address these issues. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter!

  4. Devon O'Connell 2024-11-02

    Vehicle year: 2008

I have experienced several issues with my Land Rover, including the car cutting out while driving, the gas gauge malfunctioning, and the car staying on even after removing the key. Unfortunately, these issues have resulted in the car being bought back as a lemon. While I have had a difficult experience, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another Land/Range Rover in the future.

  5. Cortez Kertzmann 2024-11-02

    Vehicle year: 2012

This car has been a disappointment since the day I bought it. Despite owning it for only three months, I have already spent over $5,000 on repairs. Even the Land Rover dealership couldn't fix the AC, but they did find $4,600 worth of other issues. When we tried to pick it up from the dealership, the car wouldn't start and they demanded another $800 for a new starter. It's frustrating that these cars require so much maintenance and it's difficult to find a mechanic willing to work on them. In my opinion, Land Rovers are overrated and not worth the investment.

It's great to hear that you're interested in a smaller SUV, and this car is definitely worth considering! While there are many competitors out there, including Medz, Lex, BMW, Volvo, and Acura, the price of this car is very fair for what you get. It's more like a truck than other car-based SUVs, but it still rides nicely. Even though it's the lowest-end Land Rover, it has the same look and feel as the more expensive models, like the Sport.

I have had 18 cars in my life, but my 2010 LR2 HSE is by far the best of them all. It's an absolute pleasure to drive and always runs great, even with 108,000 miles on the clock. I just got new tires and oil changes, and it's still running like a dream!

This car is so much fun to drive! It handles great on the highway and is very capable off-road. I've taken it through mud, deep snow, and dirt roads, and it handles like a champ. Don't let its Lexus-like appearance fool you, the LR2 can really go off-road. And after 6000 miles, I haven't had any problems. It seems to be put together really well.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my LR2 SE that I purchased back in October 2007. At the time, I was in graduate school and needed a reliable winter vehicle to get me around. I looked at a few different SUVs in the mid $30K price range, including Nissan Pathfinders, but the LR2 won me over after the test drive. I have to say, I couldn't be happier with my decision! It's been a fantastic car for me, especially on road trips. The LR2 is so easy to drive and the seats are incredibly comfortable. It's not too big, but still has plenty of space to carry whatever I need. Plus, it's compact enough to drive in town every day. And when it comes to bad weather, this car really shines! The snow terrain response setting is phenomenal, and the headlights and nav are top-notch. Overall, I'm really glad I went with the LR2 and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable SUV.

Plenty of power, a quiet and smooth ride, and an amazing stereo. I upgraded my air filter to a top-of-the-line lifetime filter and noticed a nice increase in both mileage and horsepower.
