The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.

After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).

After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-25
  • VIN: SALFR2BN0BH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: RECENTLY BEGAN HEARING A NOISE FROM THE REAR WHEN DRIVING. THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE FROM THE REAR ALIGNMENT CAUSING THE TIRE TREAD TO MAKE THIS SOUND. DRIVING FASTER THE NOISE WOULD GET LOUDER. TOOK TO MY MECHANIC FOR ALIGNMENT AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL GOING OUT. THE BEARINGS WERE MAKING THE LOUD NOISE. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 70,400 MILES AND IS DRIVEN 10 MILES A DAY AND NEVER OFF ROAD. LOOKED FOR ANY RECALL NOTICE I MAY HAVE MISSED AND THEN DISCOVERED THIS SAME SITUATION FROM SEVERAL OTHERS. I ENTERED MY VIN TO CHECK FOR ANY RECALLS AND THERE ARE NONE! SURELY THIS VEHICLE WAS BUILT TO BETTER SPECS. FOR THIS TO FAIL SO EARLY IN THE LIFE (MILEAGE) OF THE VEHICLE IS UNACCEPTABLE AND NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER AT N/C. I'M CERTAIN THERE ARE MANY MORE THAN THOSE OF US WHO HAVE FILED HERE; HOWEVER, THERE ARE ENOUGH ON THIS SITE TO TAKE THE ISSUE SERIOUS AND ADDRESS THE MATTER WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR WHAT IS - A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED BY LAND ROVER!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-04
  • VIN: SALFR2BN2BH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I HAD JUST DRIVEN 3 HOURS TO CHICAGO FROM GALESBURG, I WAS PREPARED TO ENTER 90/94 AT STONEY ISLAND , BUT I DECIDED TO STOP OFF BECAUSE MY CELL PHONE WAS NOT CHARGING MY CIGARETTE LIGHTER WAS NOT WORKING. I KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT CARS TO CHANGE A LITTLE FUSE. I POPPED MY HOOD TO CHECK OUT THE FUSES, TO REPLACE IT. I PULLED THE FUSE FOR THE LIGHTER IT WAS NOT BLOWN, I PUT IT BACK. I DECIDED TIME IS GETTING LATE, FORGET IT, I WILL BUY AND EXTERNAL CHARGER IN INDIANA. WHEN I REPLACED THE FUSE COVER AND CLOSED THE HOOD. THE CAR WOULD NOT START, THE BCS WARNING CAME UP, AND THE HAZARDS BEGAN FLASHING, AND CRASH WARNING LIGHT CAME UP. I COULD NOT PUSH BRAKES, TURN STEERING WHEEL, TURN OFF LIGHTS, REMOVE KEY, PUT IN NEUTRAL, LOCK CAR OR START THE CAR. I HAD TO GET TOWED TO THE LR DEALERSHIP IN CHICAGO WHERE MY VEHICLE REMAINS. I AM SUBMITTING THIS BECAUSE LR SAID THAT THIS IS A RARE OCCURRENCE AND THEY HAVE DONE VERY LITTLE OF PROVIDING ANSWERS. I WAS PREPARED TO DRIVE3 THRU THE ALLEGHENY'S, WHAT IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AS I WAS TRAVELING BACK TO DC? WHO ELSE COULD HAVE BEEN HARMED BY MY SYSTEM SEIZING UP? I LITERALLY WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE. ESPECIALLY WITH 36K MILES AND STILL UNDER WARRANTY. *TR

Negative 2011 Land rover Lr2 car reviews

  1. Cyril Bins 2024-10-12

I purchased a 2009 LR2 HSE for $40K, but unfortunately experienced several issues. The leather began to crack within the first year, and the color of the front grill and side light covers faded and chipped due to sun exposure. Additionally, I encountered difficulties with the remote key locking system, and had to replace the rear differential and other components, which cost me approximately $10K. In comparison, my 21 year old Toyota 4Runner has not required such extensive repairs. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this car.

  2. Derek Mante 2024-09-21

My new LR2 has 230 miles on it. Unfortunately, I realized the day after I purchased it that it was not ergonomically suitable for me. The armrest is very thin and cuts off circulation no matter what height or arm position. If you put the armrest up, there is nowhere to put your arm. What's worse is that in the up position, the metal adjustment screw (about 2

  3. Valentin Dooley 2024-04-12

The Land Rover LR2 has been a challenging car to own. Despite only having it for three months, I have already spent over $5,000 on repairs. Unfortunately, even the Land Rover dealership was unable to fix the AC issue, but they did identify $4,600 worth of other problems. While we hoped to find a more affordable solution with a local mechanic, we encountered additional issues with the car, including a faulty starter that required an additional $800 to replace. Overall, I believe that Land Rovers require a significant amount of maintenance and can be difficult to find reliable mechanics for. In my opinion, the Land Rover brand is overrated.

  1. Nigel Price 2024-11-13

Plenty of power, a quiet and smooth ride, and an amazing stereo. I upgraded my air filter to a top-of-the-line lifetime filter and noticed a nice increase in both mileage and horsepower.

  2. Hermann Daniel 2024-11-08

Congratulations on your first car purchase after completing school! It sounds like you made a great choice with this SUV, which has impressive off-road capabilities and performs well on the freeway. While it may be smaller than other Land Rovers, it still offers all-terrain modes found in more expensive models. The regular maintenance you've done, such as oil changes, air filter changes, and coolant changes, are important to keep your car running smoothly. The only downside you mentioned is that the Bluetooth feature only allows for making calls, not playing music from your phone. Overall, it sounds like you have a reliable and versatile vehicle that will serve you well. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Ismael Davis 2024-11-06

I have a 2009 LR2. At first, I was hesitant to buy it because of my past experiences with LR/RR products. However, I have been extraordinarily impressed with this beast from the first time I drove it. My previous vehicles, a County and an older defender, had their own unique features and issues. The County was a gas-guzzling, plush leather, and loaded with features tank that had some mechanical and electrical issues. On the other hand, the older defender was a simple and reliable diesel that had virtually no issues, but lacked comfort amenities. The LR2, however, has plenty of power and is comfortable. I have a mid-level 1 and it suits my needs perfectly. While some people have mentioned that it struggles at higher speeds on the highway, I have not experienced any issues. Overall, I am very happy with my LR2.I really love the A post speakers, which is something that most other luxury brands don't have. The mileage is not so great, though. I think 16 mpg is somewhat hopeful, as mine only gets about 8 mpg. It's quite thirsty. Yes, you can run 89 in it, but the mileage and power are affected. It's a trade-off, I suppose? In my experience with all LR/RR products regarding off-road abilities, I can say that they are astounding. I have off-road and rock crawling experience, admittedly not with Rovers, but comparatively speaking, they never cease to amaze me. The newer ones are still off-roaders disguised as mall crawlers. With a standard factory setup and not very aggressive tires, my LR2 is an absolute billy goat. I recently drove it through 1Oh, and one last thing, I wanted to share some inside track knowledge with you. Did you know that many of these motors are actually made by Volvo? This could explain the reliability I have experienced with mine. However, it's important to note that regular maintenance is crucial. All of these motors burn oil, whether they are brand new or not. I guess it's a trade-off for more power with a smaller engine? I can't wait to buy another one, hopefully, I can find another 3.2 liter and not be 'stuck with' buying a 2.0.

  4. Lambert Gorczany 2024-10-17

The car drives great and has good gas mileage for an AWD. The stereo is also fantastic. However, I had some difficulty with parts availability and the cost of accessories. Additionally, I experienced a fuel pump leak only two months after purchasing the car. While the resale value was not as high as I had hoped, I still enjoyed driving it. Overall, I may not purchase another Landrover in the future, but I did appreciate some of its features.

  5. Micheal Parker 2024-09-20

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my recent experience with purchasing a vehicle while on vacation. The drive back home was a breeze - I drove 525 miles and the gas mileage was fantastic, averaging between 24.8 - 25 mpg while cruising at 75mph. I'm happy to report that everything works as described and I'm especially pleased with the technology and cold climate packages that I opted for. Best of all, I was able to snag a great deal and got $10,000 off the sticker price, bringing the total cost to just $30,800. Thanks for taking the time to read about my experience!
