2017 Kia Sportage problems
The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.
The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.
In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2017 Kia Sportage problems
The Kia Sportage, a compact crossover SUV introduced in 1995, is known for its sleek design, powerful engine, and option for plug-in hybrid or electric models. Despite its popularity, the Kia Sportage has faced several common problems reported by drivers, some of which have led to recalls.
One of the major issues reported is engine problems, affecting some Kia Sportage models. These problems include repeated stalling, misfires, and even engine failure, which can be linked to excessive engine oil consumption. This issue is particularly prevalent in four-cylinder engines and has been observed in the third generation of the Kia Sportage due to the addition of the turbocharger.
Transmission problems are another common issue, with certain Kia Sportage models experiencing rough shifting, transmission slipping, and even gearbox failure. These problems are often caused by a faulty torque converter and can be expensive to address and fix.
Electrical problems have also been reported, primarily due to faulty batteries or alternators, leading to radio issues, sensor problems, flickering lights, and stalling engines.
Suspension problems, caused by worn or broken suspension components, can result in bumpy rides, loss of vehicle handling, and control. This issue is more prevalent in the SUV's body-on-frame construction.
Air conditioning problems, such as issues with the compressor or leaks in the system, have been reported by some drivers. Regular maintenance, including cabin air filter replacements and scheduled A/C system check-ups, can help prevent these problems.
Braking problems, including premature wear of brake pads, squealing brakes, and faulty brake calipers, can frequently cause issues with Kia Sportage models. These problems can be exacerbated by driving in slow traffic and towing heavy loads.
Poor quality trims and finishes inside and outside the vehicle, including faulty door handles, use of cheap materials, faded paintwork, and cracked headlights, have been reported by many Kia Sportage owners.
Cooling system problems, such as leaks and issues with radiators, thermostats, and water pumps, can lead to an overheating engine. Regular maintenance can help prevent these problems from developing.
The 2017 Kia Sportage has been reported to have engine failures, transmission slipping out of gear, and broken window regulators, which are more prevalent than in other small SUVs on the market. These issues can lead to higher repair bills as the Sportage ages.
In conclusion, while the Kia Sportage offers a sleek design and advanced features, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure a reliable and comfortable driving experience. Regular maintenance and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule can help prevent many of these issues from developing.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
- VIN: KNDPN3AC4H7
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Four window regulators failed within a few days of each other. The first front widows failed at the beginning of December 2023 and the back two failed a week later. The back windows dropped down while I was driving. Thankfully, no children were in the backseat. There was no warning that this was going to occur. The regulators are independent of each other yet all four broke. The windows lost all power and could not be rolled up. I was not able to roll up any of my windows until I paid to have them fixed at a Kia dealership in April. This was a safety issue (theft, unpredictable windows falling, heat inside the car, extreme cold temperatures couldn't be blocked out, etc.) until they were fixed at a costly price-$2,168. Two Kia service advisors confirmed the four window regulators and/ or drums needed replaced. The service advisor was aware of the problem on other vehicles and was not surprised at that all four independent regulators broke. The four regulators have been fixed therefore I do not have the failed/broken part. I have my service record however. I contacted Kia headquarters to request a recall be made on their defective product but they were not responsive. I was given a case # but nothing else.
ENGINE PROBLEM

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-16
- VIN: KNDPR3A6XH7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have the KSDS and the engine light came on right when my engine began shaking and knocking and died in the middle of downtown Chicago traffic while driving. I had it towed to the dealership and they stated that I had no compressions in a cylinder which is part of the engine and I needed a replacement engine. My vehicle had regular maintenance at Kia they change my oil, add coolant and anything that is needed and they never told me that it was burning oil and had any other issues nor did they at any time say the compression was low or going bad. If they didn’t notice how was I to know, it’s not tires where I can go put air in them. The incident was very frightening and sudden and could have cost bodily injury. The settlement states the rod bearing issue, however the compression cylinders are on the short block and I had the KSDS and whether or not it’s the rod bearing Kia needs to own the engine issues period because they know the compression cylinders issues were going to happen. The settlement was not written very exclusive to rod bearing with Kia updated warranty coverage letter dated April 2, 2021. This has and is happening to thousands of Kia owners and we honestly don’t know who to contact because Kia is not helping nor do they care. I promise you if you put out a notice or survey about this issue you will be shocked to learn how many people are actually affected by this issue with no known resources/resolution .

I recently purchased the 2017 Kia Sportage LX on 4/3/16 and I am already impressed with its features. As a fourth-generation Sportage, it has undergone significant improvements compared to the 2016 model. The vehicle is 1 1/2 inches longer and has more sound deadening materials, resulting in a quieter and more comfortable ride. The interior has also been upgraded, making it more appealing than the previous model. The LX model even includes a backup camera, which is a great addition. The long warranty is also a plus. I highly recommend taking it for a test drive and seeing for yourself why it's a must-see on your list of crossover SUVs. I stand behind my review even after owning it for 5 months now. Kia has truly gone the extra mile to create a real winner here!

I absolutely love this car! It's incredibly quiet and comfortable, and I'm getting around 28 mpg even with fast acceleration in Eco mode. It feels so luxurious and I still love it even after 6 months. The only minor downside is that there isn't an automatic window washer for the back window. Unfortunately, the gas station sponges can't clean the whole window because of the hood over it. However, after 4 years of owning this car, I can confidently say that I've had zero problems with it. I recently traded it in and was pleasantly surprised to receive about 50% of the original cost as a trade-in value at the dealership. The car was in great shape with just a few minor scratches. Overall, I think this car holds its value really well.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Sportage! It's great to hear that you're getting better gas mileage despite living in a rural area with lots of large hills and S curves. The driver's seat sounds like it's really comfortable, especially with the fantastic lumbar support. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

11/5/2018: Hi there! I wanted to give you an update on my experience with this car. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with a strange noise coming from the engine area for the first year. Despite visiting 2 dealers, the problem wasn't diagnosed until I found it myself - it turned out to be a noisy A/C compressor clutch. Thankfully, it was eventually replaced under warranty. Additionally, I found the engine/drivetrain response at low speeds to be a bit delayed and not quite what I was hoping for. However, I'm happy to report that the 2019 Cad XT4 has caught my eye and I'm seriously considering it. One test drive was all it took to convince me! Although it's a bit pricier, I think it will be worth it. That being said, I still love my 2011 Sportage and will be keeping it. It meets all of my must-have items and is the perfect size for me. Kia has done a great job improving every feature to make it smoother, softer, and more advanced while still being intuitive. Thanks for listening!

I traded in my Kia Soul for a 2017 Kia Sportage in October of 2016 and I loved the look and the drive. However, I have had some issues with the service at Camelback Kia. In April of 2017, my lights and AC went out while I was driving to the airport at 3am. It was a bit scary driving home with parking lights on 110 in Arizona, but I made it home safely. I took my car to the dealership, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it and it hasn't happened since. Unfortunately, my AC has been out for the past 4 weeks, which is unacceptable in 124-degree weather. I called Kia for a Saturday appointment and they got me in, but they didn't have anyone to work on the vehicle on a Saturday as it was a skeleton crew. I had to wait 6.5 hours and pay $250 for a recharge and a cabin filter, but they didn't know if that was the problem. When I got in the car, it still wasn't fixed and I was told I had to bring it up on a weekday. Today, I dropped off the car and was told I would be reimbursed for my fee on Saturday, but now I have to wait until they figure out what is going on. I wasn't able to get a rental car and I live over an hour away from the dealership, so it's difficult for me to take time off work to deal with my car. I have called corporate, but haven't received a response yet. I told them today that I don't want the car until it's fixed. I believe there is an electrical issue with my car and I'm worried that they are just letting me run up miles so they don't have to deal with it. I'm determined to get this issue resolved, but I'm disappointed with the service I've received from Kia. This is my third car from them, but I can't recommend them to anyone and I won't be purchasing a vehicle from them again. Good luck to you all! As of 2-23-2018, there has been no change in status and my car is still not fixed. Summer is coming and it will be in the triple digits, so I'll be up there fighting with them some more. I'm so done with Kia.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with Kia cars. My wife and I have owned two Kias and we absolutely loved them. The warranty is unbeatable and the build quality is great. We visited the closest dealer to test drive the 2017 model and we were impressed with how it looked. The interior was even better than we expected. We had previously looked at a Hyundai, and we noticed that the two cars are quite similar. However, when I turned the key and heard the engine noise, I was disappointed. As someone with a strong mechanical background, I found the tapping noise from the high-pressure injection system (fuel pump and injectors) to be unacceptable. If you're not familiar with machinery, you may not notice the noise, and in that case, the car is a good choice. I just wanted to share my opinion about the fuel system. The dealer may tell you that the noise will stop after the car has warmed up, but that's not true. They may also say that this is new technology, but that's also false. I encourage you to research direct inject systems to learn about the positives (and there are many) and negatives. I apologize for being a downer, but I love the car. I just wish they had relocated the fuel pump and insulated the firewall better to reduce the tapping noise. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts.

The newer model Kias do not come with a spare tire, only a can of fix-a-flat. However, you can purchase a spare tire kit for an additional $300. It's important to note that this information may not always be communicated by salespeople.

The car was purchased brand new in April 2017. Unfortunately, on September 25th, while parked at my wife's workplace, the vehicle caught fire due to an electrical issue and was completely totaled. Video evidence confirms that no one tampered with the car. It is clear that the cause of the fire was a result of a mechanical malfunction.

This is my second brand new Kia product. My first Kia was a Forte Koup back in 2011. I was 19 when I purchased that car and well... being 19 years old I put it through some tough times and NOTHING ever went wrong with that car... Lord do I wish I still had that little trooper. Fast forward to 2017, I bought a Kia Sportage brand new off the show room floor... and I was beyond excited! The look of this sporty mom car along with the price got me going! Anyways, on with the issues.. after a couple of months of having this vehicle the back hatch door broke... but the Kia dealership fixed it for free, which was great. Then a couple more months down the road... the passenger door handle COMPLETELY broke off! The Kia dealership had to order the part, then their paint guy had to paint the darn thing, and then they had to put it on. It was a bit of a hassle, but they were able to fix it for me. Fast forward to last week.. the back passenger door handle breaks completely off! So here I am, another door handle missing and at the Kia dealership. I told the service department if my driver's side door handle comes off I will have to get in
