Kia Sportage problems
The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.
The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.
In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

- Summary: Dear NHTSA Defects and Recall Team, My name is [XXX] , and I am writing this email along with my wife, [XXX] , to report a serious safety issue with our 2023 Kia Sportage. I am writing to bring a serious, ongoing vehicle safety issue involving a Kia Sportage to your attention. My family and I are facing repeated, hazardous malfunctions with our vehicle that have led us to fear for our lives, as well as the safety of others on the road. Since mid-September, our 2023 Kia Sportage has experienced sudden, unanticipated shut-offs both while parked and, most dangerously, while driving. During these incidents, the brake pedal becomes completely unresponsive, hazard lights fail to activate, and the vehicle is left stranded and inoperable. Most recently, while driving in traffic, the car shut off without warning, leaving us in an extremely vulnerable position. These repeated failures could lead to a catastrophic accident, especially considering we often travel with our [XXX] child in the vehicle. Despite notifying Kia and seeking assistance from their customer service team, the issue remains unresolved, and their response has been unacceptably slow. Given the severity of these malfunctions and their direct impact on public safety, we respectfully request your support in addressing this matter. We believe Kia has a responsibility to ensure the safety of its vehicles and to take immediate action when serious safety risks arise. We request that the NHTSA investigate the issue and consider any necessary recalls or further action to ensure public safety. We would appreciate any guidance or assistance your office could provide in helping us resolve this life-threatening issue. Sincerely, [XXX] and [XXX] [XXX] | [XXX] Kia Sportage X Line AWD [XXX] Purchased date: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: KNDPXCAG6P7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving east from Austin, Tx on [XXX], and as I approached a major intersection in Elgin, Tx., a warning light appeared on my dashboard that said "hybrid system failure: pull over safely". I was able to pull over into the left turn lane and then was barely able to make it over a curb and onto a highway median strip, before my car engine stopped and all dashboard lights went out. This happened in about 30 seconds. My two year old car with fewer than 30,000 miles on it went completely dead. It would not start even after several attempts. I called Kia roadside assistance, and was told I needed to have the car towed to a dealership. The tow truck driver backed the car into the space they indicated at the dealership, and it started to roll forward as it was apparently in neutral. He had to borrow a board to put under the back wheels. Days later I was told to come get the car, as it had been repaired. When I got there, it was in the same space with the board still under the wheels. I was told it just had needed a software update. (SA553A). I was never notified that my vehicle needed this update, and would just stop wherever: i.e. on a hwy with no shoulders, at night, etc. and that I would be unable to brake the car, or drive it, or put on emergency warning lights after 30 seconds. This was unbelievably unsafe. I am [XXX]. What if I were a family with children on board and it happened on a highway at night??? Kia Sportage 2020
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: KNDP63AC0L7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased a 2020 Sportage in 2022 from St.Cloud Honda in St. Cloud, MN. Recently my engine locked up after no oil. I was over in mileage, but had an oil change in April. I would receive warning lights for tire pressures but never received an indication that my oil was low until my engine seized. I don't understand why a critical component for the car, the oil, would not issue an indication that it was low until it was empty (too late). During my recent problem, my oil light came on as did the battery light, but the car stalled at that moment. During my last oil change in April, I let the advisor know that my engine light was on (not oil nor battery). The mechanic said it was from a previous repair, but there wasn't anything detected. They had the light turned off and then as soon as I left the dealership it turned back on. When I called back to let them know, they said it wasn't anything. That was a relief because I didn't want anything to be wrong with my engine. My vehicle is currently at Cornerstone Kia in Elk River, MN should you have anything to discuss with the advisors.

This is not safe at all and should be the manufacturer responsible to repair this issue.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Mustang convertible. I was lucky enough to purchase it as a new leftover from 2002 back in May '04, and I have to say, I feel like I got an amazing deal for the $10K I paid. Even my nephew, who is over 6' tall and usually complains about cramped legs in the back of cars, had no issues during our hour-long ride. I've taken it on multiple trips, including from New Haven, CT to Williamsburg, VA, and my passengers have never had any complaints. As someone who's used to driving sporty cars, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handles for a little truck. Thanks for listening!

Congratulations on making the leap into a compact SUV! As a long-time Hyundai owner, it's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with Kia and the Sportage. Even at the base model, the interior looks classy and sleek. The pickup is impressive, and it's great to hear that you can fit your surfboard and bike in the cargo space. While it took some getting used to, it's fantastic that you're now comfortable and enjoying the ride. With an average of 23 mph in city driving, it's clear that the Sportage is a reliable and efficient choice. I would definitely recommend it to a friend, especially considering how fast it is. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Vehicle year: 2009
I purchased this small SUV brand new in April of 09 and have driven it for 21000 miles without any issues. It's been great to drive, even in the harsh NH winters. I've driven on unplowed roads with 2 feet of snow and had no problems getting through on the stock Kumo tires. The car is as solid as the day I bought it. The MPG is 25-27 city/hwy, making it a great commuter car with its basic and functional 4 cylinder engine. It's also an excellent family workhorse. The exterior finish is excellent and I chose the Sportage over the Subaru because it's roomier and comes with a great warranty.

Vehicle year: 1999
Purchased new in Aug. 1999. Used mainly by my wife for errands and shopping. It has only 33K miles on it and we have not had any problems with it. Recently, I asked my wife if she wanted to get a new vehicle, but she refused as she likes it too much. It's a very dependable car that always starts and goes in any weather. If you keep up with maintenance, it will take care of you.

Vehicle year: 2017
I recently purchased the 2017 Kia Sportage LX on 4/3/16 and I am already impressed with its features. As a fourth-generation Sportage, it has undergone significant improvements compared to the 2016 model. The vehicle is 1 1/2 inches longer and has more sound deadening materials, resulting in a quieter and more comfortable ride. The interior has also been upgraded, making it more appealing than the previous model. The LX model even includes a backup camera, which is a great addition. The long warranty is also a plus. I highly recommend taking it for a test drive and seeing for yourself why it's a must-see on your list of crossover SUVs. I stand behind my review even after owning it for 5 months now. Kia has truly gone the extra mile to create a real winner here!

Vehicle year: 2017
I traded in my Kia Soul for a 2017 Kia Sportage in October of 2016 and I loved the look and the drive. However, I have had some issues with the service at Camelback Kia. In April of 2017, my lights and AC went out while I was driving to the airport at 3am. It was a bit scary driving home with parking lights on 110 in Arizona, but I made it home safely. I took my car to the dealership, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it and it hasn't happened since. Unfortunately, my AC has been out for the past 4 weeks, which is unacceptable in 124-degree weather. I called Kia for a Saturday appointment and they got me in, but they didn't have anyone to work on the vehicle on a Saturday as it was a skeleton crew. I had to wait 6.5 hours and pay $250 for a recharge and a cabin filter, but they didn't know if that was the problem. When I got in the car, it still wasn't fixed and I was told I had to bring it up on a weekday. Today, I dropped off the car and was told I would be reimbursed for my fee on Saturday, but now I have to wait until they figure out what is going on. I wasn't able to get a rental car and I live over an hour away from the dealership, so it's difficult for me to take time off work to deal with my car. I have called corporate, but haven't received a response yet. I told them today that I don't want the car until it's fixed. I believe there is an electrical issue with my car and I'm worried that they are just letting me run up miles so they don't have to deal with it. I'm determined to get this issue resolved, but I'm disappointed with the service I've received from Kia. This is my third car from them, but I can't recommend them to anyone and I won't be purchasing a vehicle from them again. Good luck to you all! As of 2-23-2018, there has been no change in status and my car is still not fixed. Summer is coming and it will be in the triple digits, so I'll be up there fighting with them some more. I'm so done with Kia.

I purchased my Sportage for a mere 350 dollars, so I wasn't expecting it to be perfect. It has 228k km on the clock, and the manual transmission is a bit noisy with worn synchros, which makes it shift hard when cold. However, it still works. When I first got it, all of the door handles were either loose or broken, but these issues are easy to fix for a weekend warrior because the door panels are a cinch to remove. The window switches are also a common problem, but they are very easy to fix. Essentially, this is a car that you can buy for a very low price from someone who doesn't know how to fix minor issues. Then, you can fix them yourself and voila, you have a perfectly good car.

The interior and features of this car are great for the price point. I initially thought it had the best interior of any competition, before the 2019 Rav4 came out. However, I have experienced some issues with the engine and transmission. With only 20k miles on the car, I have noticed jerking downshifting when decelerating. Although the dealership acknowledged the issue, they did not take any action, stating that it was 'normal for Kias.' Additionally, I have read about engine fires in Kias, as recently as 2017. These concerns have made me hesitant about my purchase. If I had known about these issues beforehand, I may have reconsidered my decision.

Last year, I purchased a 2013 used Kia Sportage SX Premium package with 61,000 miles on it. The mechanics are great, and the turbo is very nice. However, I have had some issues with the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, within a year of owning it, the plastic frame for the panoramic sunroof broke, as did the sunroof motor. It cost $2,600 to fix, and I had to pay $400 to close it permanently. Additionally, the speakers have faulty connections and go in and out constantly. The cooled driver's seat doesn't cool anymore, and the air conditioner sometimes blows warm air. Furthermore, the steering wheel volume control activates the blue tooth phone settings when I try to turn the volume down. If you want to connect more than one phone to blue tooth, it has a hard time remembering more than one, even though the phone settings show that each device is connected and paired. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Kia Sportage. I am disappointed that the extended warranty offered and purchased through the dealer does not cover any of these first-world issues. However, I am looking forward to having equity in the car to trade it in. Thank you for reading my experience.

... because I can't. Been in the shop over 20 times, the first time being 2 months after I got it for a leaky fuel line. The fan belts make it sound like a Singer Sewing Machine and they can't EVER seem to fix them. It's been a frustrating experience. I'm trading it in on a MINI when I graduate.
