2020 Chevrolet Traverse problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV with three-row seating built by General Motors. It is built on the same platform as the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, known as the Lambda platform for the first generation, and the C1XX for the second generation. It also shares the C1XX platform with the Cadillac XT6. It is the successor to the TrailBlazer body-on-frame SUV and the Uplander minivan.

The second-generation model debuted in showrooms in the summer of 2017. Starting with the 2019 model year, the Traverse was slotted above the new mid-size Chevrolet Blazer as part of Chevrolet's plans to expand its SUV lineup.

The Traverse name was originally used for a concept car at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but that concept gave way when the Equinox launched for the 2005 model year.

Common 2020 Chevrolet Traverse problems

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse has been reported to have several common problems, including excessive brake noise, stereo system freezing, and transmission changing gears slowly.

Excessive brake noise is the most widespread complaint from 2020 Chevy Traverse owners in the first 15,000 miles. This issue is more prevalent if the vehicle is used for towing or hauling heavy loads, as the front brake pads wear out quicker than normal. Replacing the brake pads costs about $80 per wheel, while rotors are an additional $150 per wheel. This can add up to a significant repair cost over time.

Another common problem reported by 2020 Traverse owners is the stereo system freezing. This issue has been reported in the first 1,000 miles of ownership. There are software updates available for the system, which can improve its reliability. Most dealerships will install the latest software updates for free, while some charge around $50.

The transmission changing gears slowly is another issue reported by some Traverse models at around 3,000 miles. There are updates to the transmission control module that can improve responsiveness. Nearly all dealerships will install the transmission updates for free, while others charge roughly $100.

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse has also had eight recalls, which is worse than many other SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall is for a transmission fluid leak, which can cause damage to the transmission. Other recalls cover the tires, along with damage to the roof rails.

In addition to these common problems, some 2020 Chevrolet Traverse owners have reported issues with the alternator and battery. For example, one owner reported that their alternator and battery went out on their vehicle, which has only 36,000 miles, and they are now facing a repair cost of $1400 - $1800.

Overall, while the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse has some common problems, it is still a reliable vehicle that can last around 250,000 miles with proper maintenance. However, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and to address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

I took my car to Auto Zone to have the battery tested and they said it was fine. I had my mechanic check on Monday 10/14/24, and it turns out the alternator was indeed bad. S

  • Summary: I have a 2020 Traverse and it randomly got a hole in the manifold. It was repaired and then not even a year later i have another hole. It makes this god awful loud noise, when we took it to the body shop they said that this is a common problem in these Traverses. We are going to have to pay almost $2,000 on top of what we paid last time to get it repaired, but this time they have to replace the entire thing. I think that this should be looked into and possible reimbursement for people having to replace an entire manifold on their car.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: 1GNERFKW3LJ
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: According to Special Coverage bulletin N242445280, some 2022 Traverse units may have a condition where the mounting bracket on the front exhaust pipe can separate from the pipe. If this event were to occur, a hole can develop in the exhaust pipe at the bracket location, and a ratting or increased exhaust noise may be present. This is exactly what has happened to my 2020 Traverse. I took the car to the Chevrolet dealer where I was told that the recall did not pertain to my VIN. While that may be the case now, I am complaining to have this exact same issue applied to the 2020 and 2021 models as well. This design is exactly the same and should be included. My Traverse has an awful rattle where the bracket has broken off and a hole has worn through. It also throws a downstream 02 exhaust sensor code.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-21
  • VIN: 1GNEVKKW6LJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Car battery drained after it sat unattended for 3 days. A jump-start started the car normally and it functioned normally until turned off. Once turned off, the hazard lights would randomly turn off/on, the door locks would randomly lock/unlock, and the parking lights would randomly come on. Replacing the primary battery had no effect. Outcome: Due to seemingly poor design, a drain pipe passes over the BCM (Body Control Module) and drips water directly into it. The mechanic indicated that this is a known issue to Chevrolet, but I do not see any information in the NHTSA about it. Hefty replacement part/labor cost.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNEVGKW3LJ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The backup camera in my Chevy Traverse stopped working a few months after purchasing the vehicle new. Whenever the car is put in reverse a black screen appears with an exclamation point inside of a triangle. This seems to be an extremely common issue with 2020 Chevy Traverses as there is numerous postings on online message boards about the same issue of the backup camera dying shortly after purchase with no resolution. Today while backing up I struck another vehicle that was also backing up that I would have been able to see if the backup camera was working. It also appeared the audible object warning did not activate. Luckily there was only minimal damage to the vehicles. It is extremely difficult to backup the vehicle without the backup camera due to the length of the vehicle as well as blind spots in the rear windows. This issue seems to be ongoing with this model and is costing consumers significant amounts of money and time in shop because Chevy does not seem to be able to resolve the issue with their Traverse backup cameras.

I had this car as a rental and really enjoyed it, although there were some areas where it fell short. As someone who is 5'10

I test drove this vehicle in a leather trim and although it is just okay in comfort, I did like the ride quality and power train feel of it. However, the main reason why I passed on it is due to its very poor visibility. Personally, I could not even see the front of the vehicle and the sides, and especially the back, it is terrible. I felt like it is really easy to get into an accident with this SUV and I felt unsafe for carrying my family around in it. Cameras and sensors don't do the driving for you, and one of the main things we must use as the driver is instinct. The best thing that helps with this is a very well-designed vehicle with large clear windows. Being able to park this particular vehicle was also a problem for me because it feels like I'm going to hit whatever is in the very back or something or someone on the side of the car. It is really hard to see. I am 5'5'' and even when I adjusted the driver's seat all the way up, I still could not see where the front of the car ends. I just don't understand why American car companies still fail at this today in the year 2020.

I'm glad you're enjoying it so far! I noticed that you mentioned some static on the radio, and it seems like others have had the same issue. I had a Ford Edge with a great radio, so I understand how frustrating it can be when you can't listen to your favorite team like the Cardinals. Is there anything I can do to help you with this issue?

Congratulations on your new High Country Traverse 2020! It sounds like you made an excellent choice with all the options and overall build. It's great to hear that you also have a 2010 Traverse that you love and plan on keeping for at least 5 more years. It's wonderful to have a vehicle that is both reliable and comfortable. Thank you for sharing your positive experience, and at 63 years young, you have many more adventures to come!

  3. Cicero Cartwright 2024-10-24

I'm so glad to hear that you love your vehicle and that it drives well! It's great to have all that extra room for your kids, isn't it?

  4. Royce Ratke 2024-10-08

The roomiest vehicle you'll ever own. They are the size of a Tahoe but don't sit as high as a Tahoe. I love this vehicle and would highly recommend it to anyone with kids or when going on vacations. There's so much room and it also drives and rides very smoothly.

  5. Chadd Greenholt 2024-08-09

We hope you're doing well! We just wanted to let you know that we're thrilled with our purchase. The SUV has been fantastic so far!
