The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.

The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.

In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2019 Kia Sportage problems

The Kia Sportage 2019 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, which can be categorized into engine problems, transmission problems, fuel tank leaking, check engine light problems, and brake problems.

Engine problems are one of the most common issues reported by Kia Sportage 2019 owners. Some of these problems include the engine idling or stalling completely while the vehicle is in motion, which can be caused by a faulty Electronic Gas Injection (EGI) control replay or a worn-out fuel pump. Replacing both parts together is recommended to ensure that the problem is fixed and one does not cause the other to fail again. The average quote for a fuel pump replacement on a Kia Sportage when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar is £301.89.

Transmission problems are another common issue reported by Kia Sportage 2019 owners. Drivers have reported symptoms such as jumping during acceleration, a burning smell coming from the hood, and a grinding or shaking feeling while driving. These problems are likely to be caused by a faulty torque converter or a transmission fluid leak, which can cause serious damage and even complete transmission failure if left unrepaired. The average quote for diagnosing transmission problems on a Kia Sportage is £90.87 when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar.

A leaking fuel tank is another problem reported by Kia Sportage 2019 owners. Owners of the Kia Sportage have reported that their steel fuel tanks have begun to corrode and leak, with Kia itself recognizing this problem and extending their warranty on the fuel tanks. If you’ve noticed a fuel leak in your Sportage, it’s important to get the problem fixed as soon as possible. The average quote for a fluid leak repair when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar is £78.22 on a Kia Sportage.

Check engine light problems are also common in the Kia Sportage 2019. Drivers have reported that their check engine light illuminates and then switches off again, even when there are no problems with the vehicle. This can be caused by minor electrical faults, faulty spark plugs, or ignition coils. The only sure way to diagnose why your check engine light is switching on and off in your Kia Sportage is to take your car to a local garage who will be able to diagnose the problem for you.

Brake problems are another issue reported by Kia Sportage 2019 owners. Premature wear of brake pads, squealing brakes, and faulty brake calipers can frequently cause issues with Kia Sportage models. Driving in slow traffic and towing heavy loads can exacerbate the problem. It is important to address any brake problems as soon as possible to ensure the safety of the vehicle.

In summary, the Kia Sportage 2019 has several common problems, including engine problems, transmission problems, fuel tank leaking, check engine light problems, and brake problems. It is important for owners to address these problems as soon as possible to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-08
  • VIN: KNDPM3AC1K7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Fully maintained services with my 2019 Kia Sportage with my local Kia dealership. I am a sales rep and use my car daily. I have 155k miles on my car. My car was needing oil changes about every 2500 miles because it was burning so much oil. Yesterday, 2/08,I turned on my car during my work day and while ideling my car in park, my engine light came on. The car immediately started to shake uncontrollably. No other indication prior to the shaking of the car did I think something was wrong. Again I get services done frequently to my car. I took it to Kia immediately. They diagnosed that in cylinder 2 one of my intake valves was broken. This is not covered under the recall already put in place or with the extended warranty with the software update. According to my Kia Dealership, the current recall for an engine replacement is only for the under rod bearing. The dealership wants $7300 for a completely new engine. I have never had a car that has ever had an engine go. Nor have heard of one having the engine fail within the first 5 years. I have looked online and many people have complained about this exact same problem and Kia says they can’t do anything for us. I do not have current documentation because my car is still at Kia. I am trying to figure out what to do before I drive it off the lot.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • VIN: KNDPNCAC0K7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have been fighting with Cronin Kia over my engine that needs replaced due to a known problem with the GDI engine. This vehicle is burning so much oil and I have reported the problem. I was told to perform oil consumption tests, which I have been compliant with. The problem is that on 11/16/23, I had to go to an oil change company due to my engine having no oil, yet again. I called Cronin Kia and was told that since I put oil in the car, I have to start all over again. I hadn't even gone the 1,000 miles that they requested me to do. I called the dealership and the service manager, Josh Hopkins, told me he could not help me even though I had photos. I then called the Kia corporate office number and spoke to Angel and was told that I should have let my engine blow up on the road and have it towed to the dealership. This would have caused an accident and they told me they didn't care that is what I needed to do. I feel this is so unacceptable and needs to be reported to you. This could cause a major accident and I have a daughter wo has special needs and I need to drive a safe vehicle and telling me to take the chance of an accident is so scary. I would really appreciate any help you can offer. [XXX] (formerly [XXX] ). [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The only fix is to turn off the card and restart. We are glad to have it inspected. This item has put our lives in danger about five times as we were using cruise on the highway traveling 65 plus mph and cars were coming upon us. We reported the issue back in March 2021 and several more times back into a KIA dealership. It took months but they duplicated the problem on our vehicle and so they tested a 2020 Sportage and had the same issue. The car stalls while on the freeway and KIA dealership states it is normal operating procedures as the resume button should be a quick touch, not a prolonged one. There are no warning indicators this is going to happen. The local Kia Dealership states they have contacted KIA Engineers and they are confirming that it is operating within normal parameters.

Negative 2019 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Lisandro Baumbach 2024-11-28

The 2019 Kia Sportage is a good value, although it may not be the perfect car for everyone. I personally have the turbocharged model with all the bells and whistles, except for all-wheel drive. If I had to choose again, I would definitely opt for the all-wheel drive, as the turbocharged model tends to have too much front wheel spin. While the panoramic sunroof is a nice feature, I personally find it a bit annoying and would prefer a smaller, more traditional sunroof. The premium Harman Kardon audio system is decent, but not the best I've heard in a car. In fact, I've experienced better base audio systems in other cars. The brake feel and response could use some improvement, as sometimes even the slightest touch of the brake pedal causes the car to halt abruptly, which can be a bit jarring. Additionally, it can be difficult to bring the car to a full stop without experiencing a little jerk at the end. However, I suspect that this may be due to the brake's hydraulic power assist being under digital control. The turbo lag and transmission lag can also be a bit excessive, especially when manually upshifting. It's important to initiate the upshift before the turbo has spun up to where the engine has come alive, otherwise the shift will come too late and the engine will rev too high, past the point of peak performance. Finally, engine performance can vary throughout the day, which can be frustrating. However, I suspect that there are several inter-related reasons for this, one of which may be that the intercooler becomes saturated with heat. Overall, the 2019 Kia Sportage is a good car, but it may not be the perfect fit for everyone. The seat has a slight side-to-side jolt when going around corners, which I remember experiencing in a Sportage I test drove several years ago. However, the steering is surprisingly tight and responsive, more like a sports car than an SUV. The front suspension and steering have no issues. While some may find the seats too firm, I find them comfortable. The ergonomics are excellent, and the engine compartment is well laid out for easy access. Although there are some annoyances, such as the heated air blowing mostly on lower shins in the winter, the AC works great in the summer. The GPS system is not as efficient as other systems I've used, but it gets the job done. Overall, the Kia Sportage is a decent vehicle with some minor drawbacks that may or may not affect the owner's long-term satisfaction.

  2. Antwan Bednar 2024-08-13

I have experienced hesitation in my KIA when accelerating from a dead stop. Despite taking it to Kia O'Fallon, IL. and being denied any problem, I am confident that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. As my car is only 4 years old and still experiencing this issue, I am disappointed that KIA has not taken responsibility to fix it. This experience has led me to reconsider purchasing another KIA in the future. I believe that the warranty should cover this issue and I expect it to be resolved promptly.

  3. Fidel Rice 2024-06-23

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an experience I had with my 2019 Sportage SX turbo last December. Yesterday, while travelling in Boston and on my way back home, my car suddenly stopped on the highway and the engine light came on. Unfortunately, I couldn't move, so I called Kia road assistance for help. They said it would take up to 90 minutes, but nobody came, so I decided to call the police. They were very helpful and called a third-party tow company to tow my Sportage. Now my car is at the dealership, but I'm hopeful that everything will be resolved soon. Despite this experience, I still believe in Kia and their products. Thank you for listening!

The AC compressor on my 2019 Sportage failed at 10,500 miles, which is a known issue with this model. However, I am confident that the problem can be resolved and I am taking the necessary steps to address it.

We purchased a 2019 Kia Sportage from Kia of Abilene in December 2018 for just over $32,000. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the GPS and were informed by the service department that there was a software update available for purchase. While this was disappointing, we understand that technology is constantly evolving and updates are necessary. During a service visit in November 2019, we spoke with a salesman who offered us $18,000-$20,000 for our vehicle with only 7,300 miles on it. While we were surprised by the decrease in value, we understand that vehicles do depreciate over time. We have found that the Sportage is not as fuel-efficient as we had hoped, but we appreciate the spacious interior and overall design. While we cannot recommend the Sportage to everyone, we believe that it may be a good fit for those who prioritize space and design over fuel efficiency.

This car is really well equipped, just like the LX trim, and the ride is absolutely fantastic! It's super comfortable and quiet, with plenty of room for everyone. If you shop around, you'll definitely see the value in this cool-looking ride.

This car is a joy to drive, with three engine operating settings to choose from: ECO, Normal, and Sport. The seats are comfortable, and the dashboard/media/info screens are great. The sound system is also top-notch. In the first 3 1/2 years/24k miles, no major repairs were needed. While the rear seat comfort could be better, it's not the worst. However, the suspension can ride a little too rough, especially in sub-freezing weather. Additionally, there have been two major interior water floods due to a clogged a/c runoff tube, which seems to be a common issue with this model. The garage also constantly has a small lake of water to the rear of the back passenger tire. The dealer service department says it's 'probably' some normal engine moisture runoff. Overall, this car has a lot of great features and is a solid choice for anyone in the market for a new vehicle.

Your Kia Sportage is an amazing car! It not only looks great, but it runs perfectly and does everything you need it to. It's taken you all over the country and never let you down. Plus, it's comfortable and easy to operate. You've had no trouble with it at all and would recommend a Kia to anyone. You loved your Soul, but needed something bigger and the Sportage was the perfect choice. You would definitely choose Kia again!
