The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.

The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.

In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2022 Kia Sportage problems

The 2022 Kia Sportage has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily affect the engine, exterior lighting, door locks, and airbags

  1. Engine Problems: The NHTSA website has received over 106 complaints about engine issues involving the Kia Sportage since 2017. These issues include engine failure, excessive oil consumption, and engine fires. Many owners have reported engine overheating, burning odors in the cabin, thick smoke coming from the tailpipe, and stuck throttle and engine RPMs. These problems have often required engine replacements and have been linked to numerous engine fires, albeit with no serious injuries reported .
  2. Exterior Lighting: The headlamp beam on the fourth-generation Kia Sportage is too low out of the factory and requires manual adjustment by the owner. The dipper beam is too dim for nighttime use, increasing the possibility of blinding oncoming traffic. This issue has led to complaints from owners about the inconvenience and safety risks associated with the low beam .
  3. Faulty Door Locks: Many fourth-generation Kia Sportage owners have complained about the premature failure of power door locks and stuck front doors. This problem has resulted in numerous reports of owners locking themselves out of their SUVs. This issue primarily affected SUV front doors made prior to 2019 .
  4. Faulty Airbags: Numerous owners have reported that their dash randomly flashes their airbag lights due to a defective passenger-side airbag module that required replacement. In some instances, the warranty has been revoked, and owners have been required to pay the full cost of the repair .

These common problems have been reported by owners of the 2022 Kia Sportage, and they can significantly impact the ownership experience. These issues should be considered when purchasing a 2022 Kia Sportage, and potential buyers should be aware of the potential risks and costs associated with these problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-23
  • VIN: KNDPM3AC2N7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine light to our 2022 Kia Sportage went on and a ticking sound was heard in the engine. When we first took it to the dealer, they said it was a normal sound. We again took it to the dealer and spoke to the manager who apologized and said it was not normal to hear that. Warranty of course was no good because we did not get the oil changes through the dealership, which our car salesman had told us that my husband being a mechanic, would be able to do his own oil changes and the warranty would still be good. Engine is now locked up at only 49,000 miles and our car is not even 2 years old, but too expensive to fix and we still owe 17,000.00 on it.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-31
  • VIN: KNDPM3AC4N7
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I recently filed a safety problem concerning my brakes activating for no reason. It had happened 3 times before I filed. It want to report that it happened a 4th time. On New Year's Eve, at approximately 6:20PM, I was driving on a 4 lane road about 35-40 MPH when my brakes slammed down hard. There was a long beeping sound only while the car was breaking but no other indicators. It was raining and dark. I braced myself for impact. I thought for sure my car was going to slide into something. There were no cars in front of me in either direction nor where any cars behind. Nothing obstructing the road. Nothing to give my car a reason to do that. Luckily there wasn't anyone behind me or else I absolutley would have been rear ended. The brakes locked for approximately 3-4 seconds before they let up. I am very happy that I wasn't on the highway at the time. I called Kia the day after New Year's. This time I was offered to bring in the car and get a loaner to drive while they take a look at it. This is the 4th time in 3 months this has happened.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-25
  • VIN: KNDPM3AC4N7
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The last 3 months, 3 times the brakes of my 2022 Kia Sportage activated without warning or reason while I was accelerating at about 35mph under different conditions. First time, my brakes slammed hard. I didn't know what was going on or why. I ended up trying to slam on my brakes which were already fully to the floor, but the car wouldn't stop. My lower body ended up under the steerling wheel, and I had to get myself back into position and figure out what was going on while the car was still moving. Second time, I took the car in to Kia. They couldn't find anything wrong and sent me on my way. I called back upset because I felt that this is a serious safety concern and demanded they look again. They kept my car for a few days and gave me a loaner. Even the loaner Soul had an issue. No automatic breaking, but it just turned off the forward collision assistance and the radar on it's own. Kia drove my car 9 miles and couldn't replicate the problem. I was told that if it happens again to call in with a description. I wrote to Kia headquarters that by driving the car under the advisement of Kia representatives, I will not be responsible for anything happening to me, my car or any other person that is ever in my car, or to another vehicle or person or property outside my car. I filed a claim with Kia Customer Support. They denied my claim of having my car repurchased or replaced without giving me a reason. They refused to give me a denial letter. I was told that information had to stay in the computer for legal reasons and that my state has a Lemon Law. My car seems to falls outside the time frame for that. Meanwhile waiting for Kia's decisions, the issue happened a third time, this time with a chime, but still nothing in the road. I called and reported that to Kia. I was given no offer to bring it in. Another time, while waiting on Kia's decision, I was driving on the highway and there was a deer literally standing right in front of me and my car did nothing to warn me.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01
  • VIN: KNDPM3AC4N7
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I purchased my 2022 Kia Sportage on September 15, 2021. In February 2022, there was a deep freeze. When then weather warmed up, there was a crack in my windshield. I took the car in for it's 6 month service and the window was replaced. On Christmas morning 2023, there was a crack in my windshield again. in the same place. Both times the crack started on the driver's side in the bottom black area of the windshield. We haven't had any deep freezes this winter. Now, I have to get the window replaced a second time. This time, I may have to pay for it, and I cannot and will not be able to come up with $1000 to have the window replaced. I will have to either not drive, or drive with it cracked. I am pointing this out because in all of my life, I have never experienced a cracked windshield. It seems very odd to have two cracked windshields in 1 year and 10 months. If Kia's windshields are that fragile under normal driving conditions, then I feel that Kia's windows are not safe if any normal road debris hits the windshield. I am experiencing a braking issue with my car as well that I filed under a different safety complaint. Between the thought of my windshield cracking while driving and my brakes slamming for no reason, I feel that my car has serious safety concerns.

TRAILER HITCHES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-30
  • VIN: KNDPN3AC6N7
  • Components: TRAILER HITCHES
  • Summary: Kia had come out with a recall immediately after purchasing and installing our tow hitch on our 2022 Kia Sportage. It has been almost 18 months with no remedy. I've taken it to the dealer multiple times and called Kia themselves both say they can't do anything. Every single aftermarket tow hitch is completely safe to use other than the Kia branded one. I paid almost $700 to get a tow hitch installed at 14k miles and now nearing 40k miles and haven't used it a single time. I have been running in circles trying to get any information. They say it's a short circuit but why they haven't adopted the method all other aftermarket parts have that have no issues makes zero sense after all this time.

The dealer was made aware of the failure but confirmed that parts were not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-11
  • VIN: KNDP6CAC8N7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Oil consumption. My car was running fine on 04/11/2023 and then at the end of the day, it started sputtering. I was approaching my oil change date so I took the car in to get an oil change. The sputtering did not stop and the car kept stopping and the service engine light came on, so I had it towed to the nearest Kia dealership. They stated there was no oil in the car even though I had the oil changed the day before and only drove it home, less than five miles. Kia is refusing to honor the warranty because I used our friend, who is a licensed auto technician, to complete prior oil changes and because Take 5, who completed the oil change on 04/11/2023, put the mileage incorrectly on the invoice. We got regular oil changes on the car so I don't know why the engine would fail.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-30
  • VIN: KNDPNCAC8N7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Was traveling northbound on I5 between Lacey and Dupont, Washington. Vehicle was in cruise at 65, then it suddenly went into limp mode. I was in the furthest right lane possible on the highway, and RPMs drastically dropped to below 1,000. I was able to get the vehicle pulled over to the right shoulder safely while the vehicle dropped to approximately 10mph on the freeway. The vehicle died as soon it was placed in park. When attempting to turn the vehicle on, all engine light warnings displayed (this was not present when the vehicle went into limp mode) and would not start. I checked for oil levels, which showed they were only slightly low. No leaks in engine compartment and no leaks underneath the vehicle. Vehicle would attempt to start after the 5th consecutive attempt, and began knocking. RPMs would not exceed 1,500RPMs with the gas pedal compressed. Towed to KIA, KIA rejecting warranty. Vehicle is a 2022 Kia Sportage EX, only 60,000 miles on it. Still waiting on official denial letter, but this issue was prevalent in previous models of Sportage vehicles from KIA. I'm thankful I was able to maneuver safely to the shoulder of a busy highway during dark hours, I could have been killed if a vehicle hit me from behind with how suddenly the vehicle's speed dropped, almost coming to a complete stop.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-04
  • VIN: KNDPMCAC4N7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The car turns off while driving. This is happened four times the first time. Kia told me in Berkeley nothing was wrong. The car started back up bring it back. If it happens again it happened again. They have had the car for over a month. The car will not start. It has not been looked at and told me that there’s other cars it’s been there for over a month. I wouldn’t be so mad my daughters on Chemo I have to have a car that’s reliable to get her there and a dealership that cares this is scary could’ve killed us.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-22
  • VIN: KNDPNCAC3N7

Turned car off and went to restart with push button start vehicle just kept cranking for a min and wouldn’t start, stopped it and tried again after a min of cranking it started, went to drive had no pick up speed, ROM’s where all over the place. Transmission feels funny while driving like the car doesn’t want to go or shift gears. Electrical components in vehicle touch screen LCDscreen goes black and can’t get it to go back on, turn car off and still doesn’t come back on, forward collision goes off when nothing around and starts braking, warning light for back passenger tail light goes on and tail light works fine. Tried to get into the dealer but they have no loaner vehicles or appts for a couple weeks.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-05
  • VIN: KNDPRCA61N7
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I was driving at 65 mph highway speed heading east on Colorado highway 36 when my Sunroof exploded. I pulled off the highway on to the shoulder of the road and looked to see that the sunroof glass on my vehicle had shattered in an upward displacement. Literally looked like the glass was pushed up from the inside. Dry pavement no sign of rocks. This vehicle has 4200 miles on it and this current occurrence comes after a similar shattering of one of my side panel windows after I entered the vehicle in April 2022 and closed the vehicle door. I have purchased multiple vehicles and Kia replaced that window under warranty.
2023-02-05

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-28
  • VIN: KNDPR3A69N7
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The glass between the windshield and sunroof shattered it looks like it exploded from the inside. There are three lines going across ans then mini shattering inside. I was not in any accident and the vehicle was not hit by any flying objects or debris. There are similar accounts of this happening to other Kia vehicles, for some reason the tempered glass is cracking either heat or cold not sure. There is no impact point on the vehicle to say it was hot by a rock or anything just tiny shattered glass. Kia is not trying to remedy the issue at all.

Negative 2022 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Prince McLaughlin 2024-06-26

Hi there! I'm a proud owner of two Kia cars. My first one was a 2014 Kia Forte, which I had for six years without any issues. In 2021, I traded it in for a 2022 Kia Sportage. While I love my new car, I've been having a small issue with the rear brake light. A warning keeps popping up on my dash, indicating that I need to check the right back brake light. I've taken it to the Kia dealership for oil changes and maintenance, and I've mentioned the brake light issue to them several times. They've tried to fix it by changing the harness, but the warning still comes on and off. They've told me that other people have had similar problems, and they're not sure what's causing it. Interestingly, they also told me that my car is an LX, but I can't find any indication of that on the vehicle itself. Can you help me with this issue?

  2. Dario Spinka 2024-06-02

I purchased the Sportage LX. Although it lacks Sirius XM like my previous car, I am confident that I will be able to connect it through my phone. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase.

Positive 2022 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Chad Wolf 2024-11-23

If I could afford it, I would have bought the step up from LX for the heated steering wheel and seats.

  2. Doug Gulgowski 2024-11-11

I understand that some people may be experiencing issues with Kias at the moment. However, in my experience, Kia offers good value for money. I have owned several Kias and have always received excellent service, even for routine maintenance like oil changes. I plan to continue buying Kias in the future. It's unfortunate that some people may try to take advantage of the situation, but I believe that Kia will continue to improve and innovate.

  3. Rafael Deckow 2024-10-22

It sounds like you're doing great with your new car! Learning all the features can take some time, but it's worth it. Keep up the good work!

  4. Roman Bayer 2024-08-27

    Great car!

  5. Abe Walsh 2024-08-12

Hey there! I'm so glad to hear that your ride is still going strong after a year and a half! It's always great to have a reliable vehicle. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!
