2021 Kia Sportage problems

kia logo

The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.

The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.

In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2021 Kia Sportage problems

The Kia Sportage, a popular compact crossover SUV, has been known to experience several common problems. These issues are primarily based on complaints from owners of the 2021 model and may not affect all vehicles.

  • Transmission Problems: Certain Kia Sportage models, including the 2021 model, have transmission issues, including rough shifting, transmission slipping, and even gearbox failure. These problems are usually down to a faulty torque converter, which can be an expensive problem to address and fix.
  • Electrical Problems: Faulty batteries or alternators have resulted in electrical problems in specific models, including radio problems, sensor problems, flickering lights, and stalling engines. These issues can be caused by minor electrical faults or faulty spark plugs or ignition coils.
  • Suspension Problems: Worn or broken suspension components, which the SUV's body-on-frame construction may cause, can result in suspension failure, bumpy rides, and even loss of vehicle handling and control.
  • Air Conditioning Problems: Drivers have reported issues with air conditioning systems on some Kia Sportage models, such as problems with the compressor or leaks in the system.
  • Braking Problems: Premature wear of brake pads, squealing brakes, and faulty brake calipers can frequently cause issues with Kia Sportage models. In addition, driving in slow traffic and towing heavy loads can exacerbate the problem.
  • Problems with Interior and Exterior Quality: Many Kia Sportage owners report poor quality trims and finishes inside and outside the vehicle, including faulty door handles, use of cheap materials, faded paintwork, and cracked headlights.
  • Cooling System Problems: The Sportage is vulnerable to cooling system leaks and problems with radiators, thermostats, and water pumps, resulting in an engine that has the potential to overheat.

While these problems may affect some 2021 Kia Sportage models, it is essential to note that not all vehicles will develop faults. Regular servicing and maintenance can help prevent many of these problems from developing. Additionally, the Kia Sportage has received improvements in recent years to enhance its quality and reliability.

I spoke with their receptionist, Heather on, Thursday [XXX] and she said my insurance company, American Alliance Casualties delivered my vehicle to their facility and they were going to start working on it right away. I called Monday [XXX] to follow up and see how is the progress going to repair my vehicle and she told me that there was something going on with the engine. The engine has 27,000 miles from the time it was stolen so that's impossible. However, I spoke with the insurance adjuster Annette Khatib and she said the inspector stated there was a blockage in the engine possibly due to a manufacturer defect. Negative 2021 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Favian Pfeffer 2024-11-26

As a firm believer in Korean manufacturers and their impressive advancements over the past decade, I can confidently say that the Genesis/Hyundai/Kia lineup has made significant improvements across various platforms. The Sportage, in particular, boasts a unique and eye-catching design that may not be for everyone, but for those who appreciate its distinctiveness, it is a joy to drive. Kia has openly advertised that the latest design includes components inspired by the Porsche Macan, and my test drive of the fully loaded SX model confirmed this. The interior quality, heated and ventilated seats, glass roof with a large opening moon roof panel, sound system, intuitive entertainment and navigation, and powertrain were all impressive. The 2.0L engine performed wonderfully and never left me wanting more, whether on local streets or the highway. Although the road noise was noticeable, I was willing to overlook it given all the positives. Despite a few minor issues, I still enjoy driving my FWD SX Turbo model a year and a half later. It offers respectable fuel efficiency, averaging 26MPG in an approximate 70/30 highway/local split, and boasts ample cargo room and a surprisingly roomy interior. However, it is worth noting that the Kia Sportage, the longest-running model in Kia's lineup, still has some room for improvement, even in the top-of-the-line SX trim.undefinedIn my experience with multiple Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia vehicles, I have noticed that the undercarriage insulation is only done correctly in their Genesis lineup. Kia and Hyundai vehicles are insulated in a minimalist fashion to save on weight and costs. Although my G80 was whisper quiet on the road, it cost twice as much as the Sportage. Additionally, the dealer experience has been a big gripe for me due to the facility, staff, and lack of training in all areas. I dread each visit, even for regular maintenance, and often find myself having to instruct the service specialist on how to fix a given issue. Overall, I believe that the Sportage, as one of the oldest models in the company's lineup, could have used more attention to detail and quality control in its manufacturing process. With some improvements, it could have been a great seller and competitor.

  2. Otho Kunze 2024-05-18

I am confident that I can improve the mpg. The current average of 21-22 mpg overall in eco, not AWD, is not up to my standards.

  3. Maximillian Jacobi 2024-04-28

Hello! Congratulations on your first brand new car! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the nice interior, heated seats, and backup camera. Plus, the 10 year warranty is definitely a bonus! I understand that the gas mileage may not be ideal, averaging around 19-23 MPG in Eco mode. Also, it's a shame that the car isn't as quiet as you would like. It's always tough to make a big purchase decision, but I hope you're still happy with your choice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Positive 2021 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Ernesto Tromp 2024-11-18

Congratulations on your new 2021 Kia Sportage LX! It sounds like you made a great choice with all the features it offers, such as leather and a sunroof. You compared it with other popular models like the Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, Hyundai Tucson, and MazdaC5, and it seems like the Sportage has a lot to offer. The build quality and drive are awesome, and the warranty is the best in its class. You got a great deal buying it for $22450 plus total. Enjoy your new ride!

  2. Gustave Bogisich 2024-11-06

At 83 years young, I have to say that this is the best SUV I have ever owned! It's so quiet on the road and the temperature controls have big buttons that you can even use with gloves on. Give that a try in my wife's Mercedes! :)

  3. Elliott Grady 2024-10-20

I test drove several cars including the rav4, mazda 5, rogue, crv, terrain, equinox, edge, etc. However, the 2021 sportage EX stole my heart. It has great hot heated seats that are much better than some of the other cars I tried. The screen and blind spot warning are also amazing features that have only sounded off when necessary. I love all of the features and it drives like a traditional car without the whining of the CVT transmissions. Surprisingly, I have been getting better fuel economy than advertised, averaging 26-27 combined. I hope this vehicle will be mechanically sound in the long run, but so far it has everything I was looking for in terms of comfort and convenience.

  4. Adonis Champlin 2024-09-11

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I think you made a great choice with this vehicle! As someone who has owned two Kia Souls, it sounds like you really upgraded without breaking the bank. It's awesome that you're having fun driving it and that it has plenty of room for all your needs. I especially love how the back seat locks down when you're carrying large items - what a great feature! And it's great to hear that the cruise works so well and that you're getting such good gas mileage. Plus, it's a really good-looking car with lots of standard features. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

  5. Obie Klein 2024-09-07

Traded my 2020 Sportage for a 2023 Sorento Hybrid. I was only getting an average of 20 combined mpg's with the Sportage, which I felt was too low for such a small car. However, with the Sorento Hybrid, I am now getting an average of 34 mpg's combined!
