2018 Kia Sportage problems

The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.
The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.
In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2018 Kia Sportage problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Kia Sportage 2018, common problems with this car include:
- Engine Issues: Owners have reported problems with repeated stalling, misfires, and even engine failure. Some of these issues have been linked to excessive engine oil consumption, particularly affecting four-cylinder engines. The addition of a turbocharger in the third generation has caused further problems with premature engine failure.
- Transmission Problems: Certain Kia Sportage models have experienced transmission issues such as rough shifting, transmission slipping, and even gearbox failure. These issues are often attributed to a faulty torque converter, which can be a costly problem to address and fix.
- Electrical Problems: Faulty batteries or alternators have led to electrical issues in specific models, including radio problems, sensor malfunctions, flickering lights, and engine stalling. These electrical issues can impact various systems in the car, affecting overall performance and safety.
- Suspension Problems: Worn or broken suspension components, which can be exacerbated by the SUV's body-on-frame construction, have resulted in suspension failure, bumpy rides, and a loss of vehicle handling and control. Addressing suspension issues is crucial for maintaining the car's safety and ride quality.
- Air Conditioning Problems: Drivers have reported issues with the air conditioning systems in some Kia Sportage models, including problems with the compressor or leaks in the system. Proper functioning of the air conditioning is essential for passenger comfort, especially in varying weather conditions.
- Braking Problems: Premature wear of brake pads, squealing brakes, and faulty brake calipers have frequently caused issues with Kia Sportage models. Driving conditions like slow traffic and towing heavy loads can exacerbate these problems, affecting the car's braking performance and safety.
- Interior and Exterior Quality Issues: Many Kia Sportage owners have reported poor quality trims and finishes both inside and outside the vehicle. These issues include faulty door handles, the use of cheap materials, faded paintwork, and cracked headlights, impacting the car's aesthetics and durability.
- Cooling System Problems: The Kia Sportage is susceptible to cooling system leaks and issues with radiators, thermostats, and water pumps, potentially leading to engine overheating. Maintaining the cooling system is crucial to prevent engine damage and ensure the car's reliability.
These common problems reported by Kia Sportage 2018 owners highlight various issues that can affect the car's performance, safety, and overall driving experience. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues are essential to keep the vehicle running smoothly and safely.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-18
- VIN: KNDPMCAC7J7
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I bought a vehicle from a dealership in 2021. The dealership sold me a 2018 Kia Sportage. To their knowledge, they state they were unaware of any safety recalls. However, fast-forward to [XXX]. As I was entering a busy street (with my two young children in the car (both under the age of 5) and going up a hill, the oil light flashed once and then stayed on, I noticed the vehicle decelerating, as I tried to pull over, making way for vehicles to go around, all three (oil, battery and check engine) lights appear in my dashboard. After one failed attempt of restarting vehicle, I knew I needed to call a tow truck. Thankfully my mom wasn't too long to execute the rescue (it was about 32 outside). The vehicle was towed to the dealership I had purchased it from (NOT a certified Kia dealership mind you). I was told later on that day, that it was a good possibility my engine has blown. I was told the service technician had put over 3.5 qtrs. in order for it to register on the dipstick. I was also told they could replace said engine for a whopping $10,000. Which, the vehicle is only worth $2,000 more than the cost of the motor replacement. I decided to have the vehicle towed to a certified Kia dealership. Where, alas, the engine was in fact, blown. However, per the service manager, the blown engine was due to a recall (XXX) which was in effect as of 1/19/19 (before I bought said vehicle). Per the service manager a vehicle should not be sold with an active safety recall. I then relayed that information to the gentleman who said the vehicle and was told it was illegal for them to work on a vehicle that they are not certified to service (although I had the option for them to replace the engine). I then begin the battle of who is responsible. And ultimately told by the manager of dealership, 70% of the used vehicles they sell have active safety recalls that they do not fix. Nor do they send them to be serviced and checked by the appropriate personnel. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-26
- VIN: KNDPN3AC6J7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2018 Kia Sportage was burning oil - had to add oil every week. On [XXX] I was driving on the [XXX] and my check engine light came on and the car slowed down. I got to the shoulder this was early in the morning I searched for a dealership and there was one 1 mile away It was 6 am when I arrived to the dealership and had to wait until they opened. And went to DCH Kia and eventually told me it was a cylinder that was blown. Why? Honestly I feel like this may have been a “false” diagnosis since the oil was burning up. I had extended coverage but they said it didn’t qualify for any engine recall. I had to get my entire engine replaced and was out of my car for over a month. Which I’m assuming the cylinder blew because of the oils burning. This should never have happened. And is truly frustrating. Especially when I am a loyal Kia owner and have never had any problems like this before. I was completely overwhelmed with the amount I was charged and that I even had to replace my entire engine and having to get a rental car the entire time as well. I’m noticing from the other comments a lot of oil burning and engine trouble in my make and model. Fortunately I did not get hit on the freeway when my car decided to stop. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-26
- VIN: KNDPN3AC6J7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Unknown, my Kia has been burning oil there is no oil leak and I had to get my oil changed every 2k miles. Then one day it started shaking on the freeway making noise and I had to exit 30+ miles from my city found the closest Kia dealership I took it there and they said I don’t qualify for the engine recall because it is a cylinder my car is a 2018 it’s 5 years old! There is no reason it should be having problems like this. I have now been out of a car and with a rental for a month now not only do I have to pay to replace my entire engine I have to pay for a rental. Oil shouldn’t be burning up. I’ve never had this happen before. And when I googled it it is a common issue in Kia’s same with cylinder issues. Why would this be happening. Burning oils leads to destruction. Even though I am forced to have oils put in or go to a shop because there is little oil in my car by 1500miles when it should be able to go 5k miles I’m beyond frustrated.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- Summary: Driving down interstate, mid-morning, and my front sunroof imploded. VERY loud, like a bomb or gunshot. Shattered glass everywhere, all over myself and my car. I jerked, almost hitting a vehicle to my left. Correcting, and almost got hit by an 18 wheeler. Made it over, got off Interstate, was disoriented, ran a stop sign I think. - Summary: I am being told my 5 year old Kia Sportage is going to need a new engine. It does have 122k miles, but other than that, I have never had an issue. After reading complaints made by hundreds of other Kia Sportage owners it seems there is a common denominator. A car made with a defective engine. I have been to the mechanic two times, for a routine oil change and have been told there is no oil in my car, even though both times they have stated there are no leaks. I need a solution for this that doesn’t cost me 4-10k on a new engine. When this issues should have never been a thing.

The ride may be a bit stiff, but overall the driving experience is quite good. I've had a few instances where the ABS has saved me from other drivers' poor decision making. One time, a driver decided to turn left from the overtaking lane at 70 mph to get an ice cream without using the slip road, but thankfully my Kia's ABS kicked in. Another time, a convoy of cars turned left into traffic without a care for those with the right of way, but again, my Kia's ABS helped me avoid a collision. Thank you, Kia!

I've been shopping for an SUV since 2016, in preparation for my move to snow country. Originally, I was set on the Subaru Forrester, so why did I end up buying the KIA? In a nutshell, it came down to comfort, warranty, and pricing. I test drove the Sportage LX AWD first, followed by the Forrester. Compared to the Sportage, the Forrester felt like a sturdy workhorse, with better acceleration, but the road noise, comfort, and sound system were only so-so. While acceleration was important, Subaru wouldn't budge on the 38K sticker price, so I went back to KIA and test drove the Sportage SX Turbo GDI AWD. The zippy turbo, luxurious interior, sound system, and low road noise made it a slam dunk. I felt so pampered! I drive a lot on rural roads, so acceleration for passing is a must, and the SX gets 5 stars. For an SUV, it has a tight turning radius, low road noise, Car Play Hands Free, and a wonderful sound system. The only things that don't surpass the Forrester are the mileage and visibility. The Subaru made me feel a little exposed and vulnerable with all that glass, though. This SUV really feels like a luxury car. It has 3 drive modes (ECO, sport, and normal). I've only used sport mode for the snow so far, so I cannot rate the 4-wheel drive lock feature. Speaking of the 4-wheel lock, it should be on the dash, not on the console. I've set my purse on it and accidentally turned it on twice. I'd like the front windows of the KIA to be higher at the curve because I hit my head a couple of times when I got in. My legs are short, and I like to sit high, so I have the seat lifted to its max and almost all the way forward. However, my brother, who is a large 6'2The car's MPG gauge is quite accurate if you reset it between fill-ups. The steering wheel controls are very intuitive and driver-friendly, including trip instrumentation, cruise controls, hands-free, and more. However, I found the Navigation system to be a bit challenging. While the graphics and screen size are impressive and the route guidance is accurate, the controls are not very user-friendly. Additionally, the Nav system only allows you to save 10 favorites. The backup camera is helpful, showing the vehicle angle in red and the projected path in yellow if you don't adjust. Although I'm still learning, I may need to read the Nav system and Multi-Media manuals to fully benefit from them. I've only had this car for a month, so I can't comment on its reliability, but I've already put 2500 miles on it during road trips, and it's been a great driving experience. I highly recommend the Sportage SX Turbo GDI AWD. After driving it for almost 8000 miles, I still love it. I upgraded the safety rating to 5 stars because visibility was just a matter of adjusting from a small car and using the mirrors. After going through a very hot summer, I upgraded the climate control to 5 stars. Cooling a large space like the Sportage interior quickly is a big deal, and the air conditioning works great in this high desert summer. The car still feels luxurious and has a new car smell. However, I gave the interior a 4-star rating because there are a few things that really bother me. Firstly, as I mentioned in the initial review, the 4-wheel Lock being on the console is a design flaw, and I still think so. No matter how careful I am, I still set something on the lock. Secondly, the hidden keyhole and only one external key lock are inconvenient. I needed to unlock the door manually once, and my key didn't work. At least, I thought it didn't.Even the tow truck driver did not know that the little slot on the underside of the driver's door handle is not for the key but a button that pops off a cap over the actual lock. That may be confusing, but don't worry, it's an easy mistake to make. On the bright side, the lumbar/seat comfort are outstanding and the KIA SUV is a great choice. I love it more than when I bought it! Everyone who gets into my KIA has a comment on the luxury and comfort. My son just bought a GMC Arcadia and we compared the interior. The KIA seats are a lot more comfortable, and has more back seat leg room with the cargo spaces being about the same. Although his highway mileage is lower than mine, the best mileage on my KIA has improved. I've gotten as high as 29.5 hwy by closely watching and using the mileage monitor, with no cruise control. The hwy avg mpg is 28, around town about 24. The trade off for the speed and luxury of this vehicle is well worth the lower mpg. Highly recommend this SUV!

If you're in the market for a compact SUV, the Kia Sportage is definitely worth considering. I recently moved and needed a more comfortable vehicle with better gas mileage for my daily commute. What initially caught my attention was the impressive warranty, and after reading some positive reviews, I decided to take one for a test drive. While the exterior design may not be to everyone's taste, I personally love the unique copper color of my Sportage. The interior, however, is where this SUV really shines. The quality and finish of the materials used make it feel like a much more expensive vehicle than it actually is. The controls are intuitive and easy to use, with multiple options for adjusting the infotainment system. Even on the base model LX, the touchscreen display and sound system are impressive. The driver information system is also easily accessible from the steering wheel, and the heating/AC system works well. The handling and steering are both excellent, and I have no complaints about the six-speed transmission. While some professional reviews criticize the engine and gas mileage, I have not experienced any issues in these areas. Overall, I highly recommend the Kia Sportage for anyone in the market for a compact SUV.I believe that the Sportage is a great car. It has a powerful 181hp engine that is more than enough to keep up with California highway traffic. In terms of mileage, I have been able to average 25-26mpg on my 13-mile commute to work, which includes a back country, twisty 2 lane road with about a 1,000 ft elevation change. The Sportage's Eco mode has not affected its performance, and I am happy that I can go over 2 weeks without having to fill it up. The all-wheel drive system has not affected the mileage either, and it provides great grip in corners. The center differential lock is a nice feature that could come in handy during winter. The LX model comes with 17-inch alloy wheels that look great, and the brake feel and overall braking are excellent. The doors have large openings that make entry and egress very easy, even for tall people. The driver's seat is very comfortable and has manual controls that fit my large frame well. The manual tilt and telescope steering column allows the Sportage to adjust to a wide range of bodies. The rear liftgate on the base LX isn't powered, but I don't find that an issue. The storage space is more than ample for my needs and has plenty of tie downs to assist in organizing the space. The base LX also has tinted rear windows and a soft cargo area cover to keep unnecessary eyes from prying. Combining all these features on a base model LX with no options for less than $25k with Kia's outstanding warranty made this a no brainer for me.

I am currently driving a 2018 Kia Sportage SX AWD and it is an absolute dream to drive. It's incredibly sporty, especially in normal/sport mode, and it's a lot of fun to drive with great pick up speed and handling. Overall, it's very comfortable and the heated/cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and other touches are really fantastic. I would highly recommend this car to anyone who is on the fence about buying one.

We recently purchased the EX AWD edition to match or exceed the options of our older 2015 sedan. After looking at a number of 2018 sedans and SUVs, we found that this one met our needs completely. We were thrilled to get the 100K warranty included. The first thing that stood out to us was the instrument cluster and the comfort of the interior. Although we were initially disappointed with the miles per gallon, averaging only 23.6, we discovered the ECO mode which increased the average to 26.7. We don't use it all the time as there is a noticeable change in power. With 11,500 miles on the car, we both agree that it's the best car we've had so far. We're only 76 years young, so we've had a few cars in our time. We highly recommend trying one out for yourself. Just remember to barter for a good price!

The 2018 Kia Sportage has received positive reviews, but some reviewers tend to overlook the negative aspects of the car. When I purchased my 2018 Kia Sportage LX FWD, I was expecting a softer, more compliant and quieter ride. However, the car has some great features such as the infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual zone AC, spacious interior, and decent gas mileage. The car's acceleration and steering are also above average compared to most cars I test drove. However, the ride quality is where this car falls short. The suspension is not up to par and every bump and road imperfection is felt in the cabin. The dealership has assured me that the springs will break in over time, but even then, only a 10-15% improvement is expected. Overall, the 2018 Kia Sportage is a great car with some minor drawbacks that can be overlooked for its other great features.I completely understand your frustration with the ride quality of this car. It seems that the firm suspension and lack of shock absorption make for a bumpy ride, especially on poorly maintained roads. It's unfortunate that the dealership was unable to offer a solution to this issue. If you prioritize a comfortable ride, this may not be the best option for you. However, if you're willing to sacrifice some comfort for other features, this car has a lot to offer. Thank you for sharing your experience and insights with us.

The interior and features of this car are great for the price point. I initially thought it had the best interior of any competition, before the 2019 Rav4 came out. However, I have experienced some issues with the engine and transmission. With only 20k miles on the car, I have noticed jerking downshifting when decelerating. Although the dealership acknowledged the issue, they did not take any action, stating that it was 'normal for Kias.' Additionally, I have read about engine fires in Kias, as recently as 2017. These concerns have made me hesitant about my purchase. If I had known about these issues beforehand, I may have reconsidered my decision.

I have a Kia 2018 with 45000 miles on it and unfortunately had to change a bunch of stuff, including the wheel bearings. It was quite frustrating, and I wouldn't personally buy a Kia again. However, I understand that everyone's experiences can differ, and I would encourage you to do your own research before making a decision.

I leased this car in mid-November 2017 after test driving several vehicles. I ultimately chose the Sportage because it was the only one that had all the tech features I wanted within my budget. The Sportage has everything I was looking for, including Harman/Kardon sound, AWD, and ventilated seats, as well as some nice active safety features. I was impressed with the power and comfort of the vehicle, and the interior fit and finish looked and felt better than some of the competitive brands (Honda and Toyota) I test drove. The ride is sporty and responsive. However, I was disappointed when the check engine light came on while driving the car last night (January 4th, 2018). Although the gas cap was seated properly, I'm still anxious to see what the dealership says. Despite this setback, I'm hopeful for the future with this car.

Hi there! I noticed that the SX, which is the top of the line, doesn't have heated seats in the rear, while the lower version EX does. That seems a bit odd, doesn't it? It's frustrating to pay for the top of the line and have to settle for less just to get other features.
