1999 Kia Sportage problems
The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.
The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.
In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, or fuel injector. It can also be a sign of a more serious issue, such as a cracked fuel tank or fuel line.
- Transmission Problems: The 1999 Kia Sportage has been reported to have transmission issues, with five complaints related to the transmission system. These issues can include slipping, jerking, or hesitation while shifting gears. Transmission problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn or damaged transmission components, or a faulty transmission control module.
- Cooling System Issues: The 1999 Kia Sportage has been reported to have cooling system issues, with five complaints related to the cooling system. These issues can include overheating, leaking coolant, or a faulty thermostat. Cooling system problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty water pump, radiator, or cooling fan.
- Interior Problems: The 1999 Kia Sportage has been reported to have interior issues, with six complaints related to the interior. These issues can include malfunctioning power windows, faulty air conditioning, or broken seat adjusters. Interior problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty wiring, worn-out components, or a lack of maintenance.
It's important to note that while these issues have been reported by some owners of the 1999 Kia Sportage, not all vehicles will experience these problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues from occurring, and prompt attention to any warning signs or symptoms can help minimize the risk of more serious problems. If you're considering purchasing a 1999 Kia Sportage, it's a good idea to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

Is the Kia Sportage a reliable car?
Plus, for adventure-seeking drivers, there are new off-road models with the rugged X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trims. The 2023 Kia Sportage is a compact SUV with excellent reliability. It tops all other compact SUVs on the J.D. Power most reliable list, including the 2023 Toyota RAV4 and the 2023 Honda CR-V.
What are the negatives of the Kia Sportage?
The cooling system consists of several parts, including the thermostat, water pump, and radiator. The failure of one or all of these parts can lead to engine cooling problems. With the Kia Sportage, the most common issue was with the radiator. It would leak coolant, thus leading to the engine overheating.
Which Kia Sportage has the best engine?
Our favourite engine for the Kia Sportage is the entry-level one, the 148bhp 1.6-litre T-GDi. You can have it with a six-speed manual gearbox, but if you want MHEV technology, you need to opt for the seven-speed automatic gearbox, which is slightly hesitant but introduces the option of four-wheel drive (AWD).

Purchased new in Aug. 1999. Used mainly by my wife for errands and shopping. It has only 33K miles on it and we have not had any problems with it. Recently, I asked my wife if she wanted to get a new vehicle, but she refused as she likes it too much. It's a very dependable car that always starts and goes in any weather. If you keep up with maintenance, it will take care of you.

So far, I'm really glad I bought my Sportage! It's sporty, fun to drive, and I haven't had any problems with it yet since I bought it used.
-
First of all, congratulations on owning a vehicle that has not needed a wheel alignment in five years! That's quite impressive. Additionally, averaging 23 mpg while cruising at posted interstate speed limits is definitely something to be proud of. It's great to hear that the ride and noise level are better than expected. The only area for improvement that you mentioned is more power, which is understandable. I appreciate your perspective on Consumer Reports and agree that the interior materials and finishing quality are just as good as Honda and Toyota, based on your experience.
-
We're so glad to hear that you're happy with your Sportage! It's great to know that you found it to be well made. We hope that you'll consider Kia again in the future.
-
We purchased our Kia back in 1999 and have been extremely satisfied with it. With only 62,000 miles on the clock, we've only encountered one issue, which was fortunately covered under warranty. In contrast, our Mountaineer has given us more problems. The Kia's reliability is fantastic, and its gas mileage is impressive compared to other SUVs and fair compared to regular cars (as expected). We've taken this car on many trips and have always been pleased with its performance. The only design flaw we've noticed is that the cup holder blocks some of the heating/cooling controls when in use. Overall, we are thrilled with our purchase and are now considering the Kia Optima as our next vehicle.

I've owned my Kia for just over three years now. While it was initially exciting, unfortunately, within a year, things started to fall apart. I feel that it was overpriced for what it is, so I wouldn't recommend getting a Kia Sportage.
Talon Krajcik 2024-09-27
Aside from a few gripes, I love this car. The gas mileage is more than acceptable (22-25 mpg), the 4x4 helps in Minnesota winters, the convertible top is easy enough to operate, and the size is great for city living.
Sylvester Klein 2024-09-19
My vehicle has had several issues, including the front brake system needing replacement twice, electrical problems, body molding falling off multiple times, and the rear suspension requiring replacement at 20,000 miles. The clutch has also needed repair or replacement three times. Despite these challenges, the vehicle is enjoyable to drive and performs well in snowy conditions. While it may be noisier than other vehicles and have some rattles and engine noises, it still provides a great driving experience. It is worth noting that the after-market value of a Kia is relatively low.
Tyler Satterfield 2024-08-10
I will not consider repurchasing this car or any other make. I am relieved it is no longer in my possession.
Madisen Pfannerstill 2024-08-09
I bought my Kia almost 4 years ago because I really liked its style and the fact that it came with a 100,000 mile coverage. However, I've had some issues with it since then. The fuse relays on the electrical system went out twice, the bracket connecting the oil filter was defective and had to be replaced, the heater blower also needed to be replaced, and the door lock had to be fixed. I also had to replace the main engine wire loom and fuse box. Unfortunately, many of the small plastic items in the car have broken with normal use, such as the sun visor clips and blower knob.
