2001 Kia Sportage problems

kia logo

The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.

The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.

In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2001 Kia Sportage problems

The Kia Sportage 2001 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from engine problems, transmission problems, check engine light problems, and brake problems.

One of the most common problems reported is with the engine. The engine has been known to idle or stall completely whilst the vehicle is in motion, indicating a failing engine. This problem is often caused by a faulty Electronic Gas Injection (EGI) control replay or a worn out fuel pump. It is recommended to replace both parts together to ensure that the problem is fixed and one does not cause the other to fail again. The average quote for a fuel pump replacement on a Kia Sportage is £301.89.

Another problem reported by Kia Sportage 2001 owners is transmission problems. Drivers have reported symptoms including jumping during acceleration, a burning smell coming from the hood, and a grinding or shaking feeling whilst driving. This problem is likely to be caused by a faulty torque converter or a transmission fluid leak, which can cause serious damage and even complete transmission failure if left unrepaired. The average quote for diagnosing transmission problems on a Kia Sportage is £90.87.

Check engine light problems are also common in the Kia Sportage 2001. Owners have reported that the check engine light illuminates and then switches off again, even when there are no problems with the vehicle. This problem can be caused by minor electrical faults, faulty spark plugs, or ignition coils. The only sure way to diagnose this problem is to take the car to a local garage for diagnosis.

Brake problems are also a common issue in the Kia Sportage 2001. A number of different brake problems have been reported, including contaminated brake fluid, a faulty handbrake, and seatbelt problems. Kia has announced recalls on affected Sportage models due to these problems.

In summary, the Kia Sportage 2001 has several common problems, including engine problems, transmission problems, check engine light problems, and brake problems. These problems can be caused by various factors and can lead to serious damage if left unrepaired. It is recommended to take the car to a local garage for diagnosis and repair to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

Are old Kia Sportage reliable?

The Sportage is a well-made car that has had very few reported faults in this generation. There have been some issues with non-engine electrics, mostly relating to the sat-nav system (where fitted), and the starting procedure.

What are the negatives of the Kia Sportage?

The cooling system consists of several parts, including the thermostat, water pump, and radiator. The failure of one or all of these parts can lead to engine cooling problems. With the Kia Sportage, the most common issue was with the radiator. It would leak coolant, thus leading to the engine overheating.

Is used Kia Sportage a good car?

The Sportage has never been a contender for the best-driving family SUV but the current model's cornering abilities are more than good enough. Yes, there is quite a bit of lean in the corners, but grip is plentiful and the steering is precise and gives you the confidence to place the car exactly where you want it.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-15
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE REAR PART OF THE FRAME JUST BEHIND THE REAR SUSPENSION RUSTS FROM WATER THROWN UP BY THE TIRES. WHILE THIS MIGHT NOT NORMALLY BE A DANGER UNLESS YOU WERE TOWING, ON THIS MODEL IT'S WHERE THE FRAME CONNECTS TO THE WHEELS BELOW TO STABILIZE THE FRAME OVER THE SUSPENSION, WITHOUT THIS SUPPORT IT RELEASES THE BACK SUSPENSION AND ALLOWS THE CAR TO EASILY ROCK BACK AND FORTH INTO THE WHEELS. I COULD SEE SHINY SPOTS ON THE SHOCKS FROM TIRE RUB WHERE THE PAINT WAS RUBBED OFF, NO CURRENT SIGN OF TIRE DAMAGE. I FEEL THIS COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE SHOCKS, SPRINGS OR OTHER METAL BODY OR FRAME PART COULD WEAR OR POSSIBLY IF SHARP PUNCTURE A TIRE ON EITHER SIDE WHEN CORNERING. THIS PROBLEM CAN EASILY BE SEEN BY SWINGING THE SPARE TIRE OUT OF IT'S CLOSED POSITION TO OPEN THE TAILGATE, WHEN THE TIRE REACHES THE END OF IT'S ARM THE WHOLE BACK END OF THE VEHICLE WILL MOVE OVER, THE RUSTED FRAME BELOW WILL BEND. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-07-07
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM A PRIVATE OWNER, THEY SMELLED AN ODOR OF FUEL EVER SINCE THEY ACQUIRED THE VEHICLE A MONTH AGO. PRIOR TO THAT IT WAS OWNED BY ONE OWNER AND GARAGE KEPT. THE FUEL TANK AND BOTTOM PROTECTOR WAS ROTTED AWAY AND IN DANGEROUS LEAKING CONDITION. KIA WAS CONTACTED AND THEY SAID THERE WERE NO RECALL AND THEY WOULDN'T REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE ROT IN THIS TANK DIDN'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT, BUT IT WAS SO SEVERE THAT IT WARRANTS A LOOK FROM THE NHTSA INTO THIS. A MANUFACTURER SUCH AS KIA SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SELL AN INFERIOR SAFETY HAZARD TO THE CITIZENS OF THE USA. THERE WERE INVESTIGATIONS INTO THIS PROBLEM A FULL 7 YEARS AGO AND NOTHING WAS DONE. THIS IS AN INSULT TO PEOPLE CONCERNED WITH MOTORING SAFETY, WE SHOULD EXPECT BETTER FROM BOTH THE MANUFACTURER AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES SUCH AS THIS ONE. IT'S NOT A MILEAGE ISSUE, THE 1999/2000 SPORTAGES WERE RUSTING OUT WITH ONLY A FEW YEARS OF SERVICE AND IT IS DUE TO INFERIOR MATERIALS THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY A MANUFACTURER THAT USES THEM. *TR

  • Summary: THE CAR KEEPS STALLING JUST QUITS WHEN I SLOW DOWN. I HAD TWO MECHANICS CHECK IT OUT. FILLED THE TANK WITH NEW GAS, AND NOTHING SHOWED UP ON THE ELECTRICAL CHECK. IT IS A MYSTERY WHY THIS KEEPS HAPPENING. I AM WORRIED THAT THIS MIGHT HAPPEN ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. AND I DON'T WANT TO SELL THE CAR AND GIVE SOMEONE ELSE THIS PROBLEM.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO THE HOSPITAL GOING 30MPH, I REACHED DOWN TO PICK UP SOMETHING OFF THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR( I WAS THE PASSENGER), WHEN I HEARD A SOUND LIKE BREAKING GLASS. WE THOUGHT WE HAD RUN OVER A GLASS OBJECT BUT WHEN I TURNED TO LOOK BACK THERE WAS NOTHING THERE. I DID NOTICE THAT MY SEATBELT WAS NO LONGER RESTRAINING ME. THE PART THAT SHOULD HAVE KEPT ME SAFE, THE SEATBELT, HAD COME COMPLETELY OUT OF ITS COMPARTMENT. I KNOW THAT IF WE HAD BEEN IN A WRECK I WOULD HAVE GONE THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD. *TR

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-22
  • VIN: KNDJB723215
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I WAS HEARING A CLUNK EVERY TIME I STARTED GOING FORWARD AND BACKWARDS AND GOT UNDERNEATH THE CAR TO NOTICE THE FRAME CROSSMEMBER WAS TOTALLY SEPARATED FROM THE FRAME. IT IS THE FRAME CROSSBAR THAT HOLDS THE REAR AXLE SUPPORT TO THE FRAME. THE AFFECTED FRAME CROSS MEMBER GOES UNDERNEATH THE GAS TANK AND WOULD REQUIRE 2 DAYS LABOR TO FIX AT MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. TO REMOVE THE GAS TANK IS ONE PROJECT AND TO HAVE A NEW WELDED SUPPORT BAR IS ANOTHER PROJECT AND WILL COST ALOT TO FIX. I CALLED KIA FOR POSSIBLE RECALLS AND THEY SAID "OH ITS OUT OF WARRANTY" GOODLUCK WITH THAT!!! THIS CAR IS UNSAFE AND COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS DAMAGE. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-08-27
  • VIN: KNDJA723815
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2001 KIA SPORTAGE, WITH A FAULTY SENDING UNIT SEAL. THE SEAL LEAKED, CAUSING FUEL TO RUN DOWN THE SIDE OF THE TANK AND RUST A HOLE INTO THE TANK CAUSING A SECOND LEAK. THE SENDING UNIT AND THE PRESSURE REGULATOR AND THE GAS TANK ARE ALL SOLD SEPARATELY. THE SHIELD AROUND THE TANK CAUSES FLUID TO TRAP BETWEEN THE TANK AND THE SHIELD, WHICH IS WHERE IT RUSTED. THE SHIELD IS ANOTHER EXPENSE. KIA WILL HONOR NOTHING. I FEAR FOR MY LIFE TO DRIVE IT THE WAY IT IS. IT WILL COST AROUND $600-800 IN PARTS ALONE. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-07-17
  • VIN: KNDJB723415
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AS IS IT HAPPENING WITH THE 2002, AND 2005 MODELS, MY 2001 KIA SPORTAGE ALSO HAS PROBLEM WHEN I PUT GAS IN. WHEN I TRY TO FILL IT UP, IT SPITS THE GASOLINE OUT WITH SO MUCH FORCE IT GETS ALL OVER THE FLOOR AND IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL, IT GETS ON YOU. THIS IS BEEN HAPPENING ABOUT A YEAR OR SO AGO. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT THE GASOLINE YOU PUT IN THE TANK GOES BACK OUT. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC AND TOLD ME THERE WAS A DEFECTIVE VALVE INSIDE THE TANK AND IT WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE JOB. I CHECK BUT THERE ARE NO KIA RECALLS. I THINK THERE SHOULD BE SOME ENFORCEMENT FROM THE GOVERNMENT AGAINST KIA SO THEY FIX THIS PROBLEM WHICH IS DANGEROUS NOT ONLY TO THE OWNER'S HEALTH, BUT TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND HIS POCKET TOO. *TR

Negative 2001 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Lambert Lueilwitz 2024-11-29

... because I can't. Been in the shop over 20 times, the first time being 2 months after I got it for a leaky fuel line. The fan belts make it sound like a Singer Sewing Machine and they can't EVER seem to fix them. It's been a frustrating experience. I'm trading it in on a MINI when I graduate.

  2. Arvel Hessel 2024-11-04

Although the experience with this vehicle has been challenging, it is important to note that these issues are not representative of the quality of the brand. The vehicle required several repairs, including window motors, signal light, back seat latch, cup holder, and three catalytic converters. Additionally, a new motor was installed at 36,000 miles. Despite these efforts, the vehicle still experienced issues within 400 miles of the new engine install. It is recommended to explore other options when considering a vehicle purchase.

  3. Hank Konopelski 2024-11-03

I purchased this vehicle due to the warranty and affordability, but unfortunately, it has not lived up to my expectations. The interior quality is poor and there have been constant issues with the electric windows, cup holders, air conditioner, and transmission. Despite these setbacks, I am confident in my decision to purchase this vehicle and will continue to address any issues that arise. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  4. Tyrell Abbott 2024-10-06

The 2002 Kia Sportage has not met my expectations. Despite paying over $20k with taxes, the materials used are of poor quality. The power windows have required correction three times and are currently not functioning. Additionally, the car is affected by wind speeds over 65 mph, making it difficult to keep in the lane. The storage capacity is also insufficient and the CD player is of low quality.

  5. Lonny Spinka 2024-09-10

I bought this car brand new and initially loved it. However, after about 6 months, I experienced a number of issues. The exhaust needed to be replaced three times, the drive train broke, and the service center damaged my hubs (which they claimed was up to factory standard). Additionally, the heater fan needed to be replaced twice. When I took it to a non-dealership to have the heat shield replaced and welded, I also had to replace the rear seatbelt, which had broken and was unusable. The dealership wanted to charge me $150 to replace it, but I was able to find a replacement at a wrecker for only $20. Furthermore, the rear hinges on the rear tire bracket rusted within a year, which is unfortunately not covered by the warranty. While I have had some negative experiences with this car, I do not believe that this reflects poorly on Kia as a whole. I simply cannot trust their warranty and would not purchase another Kia in the future.

Positive 2001 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Ray Crooks 2024-11-12

This is not an Escalade, and I didn't expect it to be. Many folks buy these without doing their homework and are disappointed. However, this is a real SUV on a ladder truck frame, not a unibody car. It is very underrated but well worth the money! If you buy one, you will definitely enjoy it!

  2. Claud Bradtke 2024-08-03

I commute 130 miles a day and my Sportage has never let me down. I've only had to change the oil, rotate the tires, and get a 30k tune-up.

  3. Damon Welch 2024-07-24

I was considering purchasing a Grand Vitara, but my wife found the Kia to be 'cute'. I noticed that many others have written about the same issues I have experienced, such as the inconvenient rear hatch/spare tire design, hard-to-see gauges, rattles, muffler pipe rust, and brake dust and vibration. However, I must say that the Kia steers straight and is really enjoyable to drive. It can even climb muddy hills that my Jeep Grand Cherokee cannot. I was able to solve the brake problem by replacing the front pads and rotors with premium aftermarket replacements.

Your Red 2001 2 door automatic Sportage with 2WD sounds like a great ride! It's wonderful to hear that you love it and find it reliable, especially with your long daily commute. The rear top removed must make for a fun and exciting drive! The comfortable seats and good view of the road ahead sound like great features. It's impressive that the 2.0 Mazda engine runs strong and has fast acceleration for passing traffic. While it may ride like a truck, the tough frame is perfect for your dirt road with lots of ruts and bumps. With proper maintenance, it's clear that this truck will last you for many miles to come. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I love everything about my Kia, especially its turning radius and in-town handling.
