2014 Kia Sportage problems
The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.
The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.
In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2014 Kia Sportage problems
The Kia Sportage 2014 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details of these problems:
- Check engine light problems: Drivers have reported issues with the check engine light on their Kia Sportage 2014 illuminating and then switching off again, when there are actually no problems with the vehicle. There are a number of reasons why this might be happening, from minor electrical faults to faulty spark plugs or ignition coils. The only sure way to diagnose why your check engine light is switching on and off in your Kia Sportage is to take your car to a local garage who will be able to diagnose the problem for you.
- Brake problems: A number of different brake problems have been reported by Kia Sportage 2014 owners, including issues with the brake fluid, handbrake, and seatbelt operation during a collision. These problems can lead to additional injury and require immediate attention.
- Electrical faults: The Kia Sportage 2014 has a relatively complex electrical system that can be prone to faults, particularly in older models. Common issues include problems with the central locking, windows, and dashboard displays .
- Suspension issues: The Kia Sportage 2014 suspension is known to be prone to wear and tear, particularly on cars that have been driven on rough or poorly maintained roads. This can result in issues such as clunking noises, rough handling, and uneven tire wear .
- Rust: The Kia Sportage 2014 is known to be prone to rust, particularly on cars that have been exposed to salt on the roads in winter. Rust can form around the wheel arches, the sills, and the floor pan, which can be an expensive issue to fix .
It is important to note that not all Kia Sportage 2014 models will experience these problems, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, it is recommended to be aware of these potential issues and to have the vehicle inspected by a professional if experiencing any of these problems.

Kia has made it difficult to make an appt for an engine issue, Fette Kia in Clifton NJ says they have emergency slots, but they will only “talk” to me and not look at the car. This seems like an emergency to me. Finally made an appointment for 20 days from now at another dealership.

I turned on my hazard lights and kept going until I pulled over a mile down at a rest stop. As soon as I took the exit into that rest stop, all the lights came on the dashboard and the car stopped on its own without me turning it off and without me making it completely into the rest stop. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-24
- VIN: KNDPB3AC0E7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle completely stalled out on the 15 freeway in Southern California, and I barely made it off of the road and had to call 911 due to the traffic coming so near to me. My vehicle was towed to the Kia dealership in Victorville, where they told me a bearing engine knock occured and I was told by them and Kia that the warranty doesn’t stand because of a previous owner to owner’s before I bought the car did not do the update they were supposed to do. It was a very very scary situation. I was on the side of the 15 freeway with a ditch beside me just waiting to get plowed down by big rigs going by me. And now I am out $8000 that I paid to purchase the car two months ago with no recourse to have it fixed because they told me it’s going to be $11,000 because the engine in my car is discontinued. I did my due diligence. I did a CARFAX and a Bumper report and because Kia and Hyundai decided this wasn’t a recall, but rather a product improvement campaign, it was not listed in any of the forms I used to do my best to find out if this car was a good car to buy.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-02-01
- VIN: KNDPBCAC2E7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY
- Summary: In researching my vehicle I came across a recall/investigation for Kia window regulators. My 2014 Sportage has had the same issue and the dealership told me 'my door panel is fried'. I do not have any issues with the drivers window...it can go up/down. The passenger side is functional less often than the rear windows which will at times get stuck half way or stuck down all together. I own a 2014, am the original owner - the issue is includes more than just the 2017 models. The dealership dismissed my concern that the driver side window is functional while the remaining three windows are functional at times. If the door panel was fried wouldn't that mean that ALL functionality would be lost?

The LX has a decent radio, but the AWD is truly exceptional. I highly recommend this feature because it has served me well, even during my daily commute of over 100 miles. I have complete confidence in the AWD and have never been stuck in snow or mud. I gave it a 4-star rating for tech because it did not come with a navigation system and the voice command takes some getting used to. You have to speak slowly and repeat yourself several times for it to work. Additionally, the USB port is in a bad spot, making it difficult to use if you have sunglasses or other items on the tray. However, I have over 110,000 miles on my Sportage, which is a leftover 2013 model, and it still runs great. I get an impressive 29 mpg on the highway, which is mainly what I do. Unless you do a lot of city driving, I'm not sure why some people report getting bad mpg, unless they're driving a Subaru, haha!
-
Great looking SUV! It's awesome that it comes with so many great options as standard. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it has remote start from the factory. The UVO system is also a really nice feature. While the ride is a little stiff, it's definitely not horrible. Plus, the cornering is excellent!
-
Before purchasing a Kia, it's important to check for any recalls, as there have been reports of certain models exploding without warning. However, if your recalls are up to date, this compact SUV offers great gas mileage and easy driving. The design is cute and sporty, and the vehicle is surprisingly roomy. While the steering may be a bit stiff for a small car and there may be some road noise, overall it's a great entry-level vehicle for a single driver or small family. If your family grows, you may want to consider purchasing a larger vehicle.
-
This is an excellent car to buy if you're a first-time buyer like I was. I absolutely love it! It has great room for everyone and awesome storage in the back.
-
Great little SUV! It's so fun and easy to drive, and at a price that is very easy on the pocketbook. I love the color selection; we picked 'SeaHawk Blue' and couldn't be happier.

Last year, I purchased a 2013 used Kia Sportage SX Premium package with 61,000 miles on it. The mechanics are great, and the turbo is very nice. However, I have had some issues with the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, within a year of owning it, the plastic frame for the panoramic sunroof broke, as did the sunroof motor. It cost $2,600 to fix, and I had to pay $400 to close it permanently. Additionally, the speakers have faulty connections and go in and out constantly. The cooled driver's seat doesn't cool anymore, and the air conditioner sometimes blows warm air. Furthermore, the steering wheel volume control activates the blue tooth phone settings when I try to turn the volume down. If you want to connect more than one phone to blue tooth, it has a hard time remembering more than one, even though the phone settings show that each device is connected and paired. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Kia Sportage. I am disappointed that the extended warranty offered and purchased through the dealer does not cover any of these first-world issues. However, I am looking forward to having equity in the car to trade it in. Thank you for reading my experience.

The suspension of this product is not up to the mark and can cause discomfort. I would not recommend purchasing it.
Torrance Reichert 2024-10-06
I was disappointed to find out that my Kia Sportage did not achieve the stated MPG. After doing some research, I discovered that Kia/Hyundai had overstated the MPG on several models, including the Sportage. Additionally, I found out that there was a class action lawsuit against Kia/Hyundai in 2002 for overstating horsepower on several of their vehicles. Unfortunately, this eroded my confidence in Kia as a manufacturer. I also read several reviews from buyers who complained that their warranty was not honored, which further added to my concerns. Ultimately, I decided to trade in my Kia for a Toyota. Although the seats were uncomfortable, the ride was bumpy, visibility out the rear was poor, and the mileage was not great, I felt that I could trust Toyota as a manufacturer. After all, what good is a great warranty if a buyer cannot be sure it will be honored?

I recently purchased a Mustang GT from a friend, but unfortunately it had been totaled by an insurance company and this was not disclosed to me. When my spouse drove it, they noticed it pulled to the left and we discovered the issue when we took it to Ford. As a result, we decided to trade it in and ended up with a 2014 Sportage. While I appreciate the color and height of the Sportage, I find the seats uncomfortable and there is no way to adjust the lumbar support in the lower back. Additionally, the steering wheel does not come down enough, making it difficult to rest my arms on the armrest while driving. Despite turning off the ECO mode, the car lacks power and I find myself filling up at least twice a week. While I am not completely satisfied with my current vehicle, I am hopeful that it will serve me well for the next two years.

In 2012, I purchased a 2013 Kia Sportage LX after months of thorough research. However, shortly after the purchase, I encountered some issues with the engine sputtering when stopped and the navigation display screen going out randomly. Despite taking it to the dealer, the problems would never present themselves. In 2020, the engine started to tick and knock while driving on the freeway. I contacted Kia and they asked me to get a diagnostic test done at the dealership. The dealership suggested engine replacement, but Kia refused to fix it, citing that it was out of warranty. Even though Kia recalled the engine on my exact vehicle type, my specific vehicle vin# is not covered, according to Kia. Despite my efforts to resolve the issue through correspondence with Kia, BBB, and Consumer Affairs, I have not received a satisfactory resolution. However, I remain confident in my decision to conduct thorough research before making my purchase.
