2016 Kia Sportage problems

kia logo

The Kia Sportage (Korean: 기아 스포티지) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 1993 through five generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sportage transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Tucson. Since the fifth-generation model launched in 2021, Kia developed the Sportage in two sizes with different wheelbase lengths for different markets.

The Sportage has been the best-selling Kia model globally since 2016 after surpassing the Rio. In 2018, the model reached the 5 million production milestone. As of 2023, the Sportage is positioned between the Seltos or Niro and the three-row Sorento in Kia's SUV global lineup.

In 2022, the Sportage won the 'Family SUV' and 'Full Hybrid' categories in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. In 2023, the Sportage was chosen as Car of the Year in Morocco.

Common 2016 Kia Sportage problems

The Kia Sportage 2016 has been reported to have several common problems, many of which are related to the engine, transmission, and brakes.

One of the most common problems with the Kia Sportage 2016 is engine issues. Drivers have reported that the engine may idle or stall completely while the vehicle is in motion, which can be both frustrating and dangerous.

Another common problem with the Kia Sportage 2016 is transmission problems. Drivers have reported symptoms including jumping during acceleration, a burning smell coming from the hood, and a grinding or shaking feeling while driving. This problem is likely to be caused by a faulty torque converter or a transmission fluid leak, which can cause serious damage if left unrepaired.

The Kia Sportage 2016 has also been reported to have brake problems. A known problem with the Kia Sportage is that the brake fluid may be contaminated on affected models due to the incorrect fluid being used when topping up. This can lead to a number of issues, including the handbrake failing to engage or release without warning and front seat belt buckles not latching securely.

In addition to these issues, some drivers have reported minor issues with the car's air conditioning system and rattles coming from the car's doors on early models.

While the Kia Sportage 2016 has had very few reported faults in this generation, it's important to be aware of these common problems and to have them checked and repaired by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to avoid further damage or safety issues.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-11
  • VIN: KNDPBCAC7G7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I brought my 2016 Kia Sportage into Spitzer Kia because when stopped and in drive with my foot on the brake the vehicle shakes/vibrates a little. I HAVE NO WARNING LIGHTS ON. I had a tune up approximately a month earlier. Advisor James Martin at Kia said it needed a tune up because the previous tune up wasn't official Kia parts. I told James I need the old parts back so I can bring them back to the previous mechanic for reimbursement, James said okay. They did the tune up and the issue was still present. James said Kia will have a master technician service the vehicle. James called me back late on a Monday night and told me the cylinder dry and wet readings and will call me back first thing Tuesday morning with an estimate, he was on speaker phone so me and my wife heard what he said but weren't able to write anything down at that time. I called several times on Tuesday to eventually find out James was off and Kim was supposed to call me back but never did. I called Wednesday morning and spoke with James and he advised me of only the dry reading and stated that there was no record of the wet but they did go up. I advised him he told me the wet readings and he claimed he didn't. WHICH IS A LIE. He eventually said that the engine needs to be replaced. This is a recalled engine with less than 100k miles on it. I have EVERY maintenance record on this vehicle and there is no reason the engine should need to be replaced. Kia needs to step up and take care of their issues with their engines. No reason at all an engine should last less than 100k with a vehicle extremely well maintained. If you need all vehicle maintenance records please contact me and I can scan the hundreds of paperwork for you.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: KNDPCCA67G7
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle recall was addressed, yet problem persisted which was an engine oil leak/burn. Oil continued to leak/burn and caused engine problems. Cylinder 1 misfire was most recent, lost of acceleration, a/c failure, burning of engine coolant. All regular maintenance has been performed, 2nd set of new spark plugs within 12 months were installed a week ago. I have spent over $500 in the last few months alone trying to "maintain" my vehicle. Mechanic also stated these failures could lead to catalytic converter damage/failure. I have asked dealership & Kia separately to facilitate this repair before total failure to ensure my safety. They refused. Vehicle finally had the engine failure while driving in the center lane at highway speed on I95, this put my life in danger and Kia did not seem to think that was important. My vehicle had to be towed to a dealership at my expense, a rental car is at my expense and I have no ETA on when it would even go through diagnostic testing. I feel that Kia owes me a full system repair and ensures that the vehicle is up to date and safe to drive.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-30
  • VIN: KNDPB3AC2G7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: This car was driven by a 17 year old high school student. Car with high oil consumption engine resulting in engine seizure 4/2022. Engine unseized and consumption of 1qt oil every 1,000 miles deemed "within normal limits" per Kia of America policy (Ganley Kia in Mentor Ohio). Kia corporate offices contacted with no resolution. From 4/2022 to 8/2023, car was driven only 2.5 non freeway miles to high school and home. It continued to consume oil resulting in adding and checking oil weekly despite low mileage driving. The car finally developed a lower engine knock at complete engine failure 8/2023. We sold it to [XXX] for $700.00. The manufacturer (Kia) of the car is fully aware of the defective engine design, the high oil consumption, and potential eventual engine failure. The car has poor resale and trade in value. Kia should be investigated for safety and ethical concerns. We were lucky there was not a fire, an accident, or a fatality. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-30
  • VIN: KNDPC3A67G7
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: On July 30, 2022 I took my car to Greenway Kia East Orlando due to two traction warning lights that were on. After weeks and months of Kia not knowing what was wrong with the car I was finally told that it was an electrical harness and that my warranty company was non responsive. I decided to call my warranty company and after back and forth they said they would not approve what Kia wanted to do because they needed to fix the initial issue which I believe to be the same. The service manager from Kia, Gina Carpio then told me there was nothing else they could do, so I asked them on December 14th to put my car back together the way that on dropped it off on July 30th so that I can pick it up and take somewhere else. A couple of months prior to this I asked them to do the same, since they couldn’t figure out what was wrong and their response at the time was that they couldn’t release the car to me because it was not safe to drive. Fast forward to December 16, 2022 when I picked up the car after almost five months I noticed that nothing on the console was working, so no ac, heat, defrost, radio, backup camera etc. I also noticed that the drivers side door would not open with the key fob or my hand and it looks like someone try to pry it open. When I told all of this to the service manager, Gina Carpio she didn’t know why anything wasn’t working so she called a tech and also told me she would order the part of my door that was prayed in, even though that isn’t the only issue with the door. So almost five months later I have a car that is in worse condition. I can’t see when it rains or is cold outside and I have to go in through the passenger side to unlock the drivers side door so I can get in.

Negative 2016 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Garfield Parisian 2024-11-25

When I first bought my Kia, I was absolutely in love with it. It was cozy, cute, and great on gas, even though it was quite basic. Unfortunately, my engine failed at 103,000 miles, despite my regular oil changes and maintenance. When I reached out to Kia, they informed me that the previous owner had not taken care of a recall, which meant that I was responsible for the issue. While I strongly disagree with this, I unfortunately had to spend $5,000 to either sell the car or buy a new engine. Needless to say, this experience has left me feeling quite disappointed, and I don't think I would consider buying from Kia again.

  2. Leopoldo Cole 2024-11-20

While there are some areas for improvement, such as blind spots and the remote start feature, overall I have mixed feelings about my car. Living on a hill can be a bit challenging as the view from the top is limited, but I have learned to take it slow and steady. Despite some dissatisfaction with the remote start feature, I still enjoy driving my car.

  3. Matt Jenkins 2024-09-17

This car was a complete disappointment. Despite purchasing it with only 62,000 miles, I experienced numerous issues with the transmission, rear suspension, brakes, all-wheel drive, and engine. These problems arose within the first 10,000 miles of ownership. As an experienced car owner, I can confidently say that this was the worst car I have ever had.

  4. Gino O'Conner 2024-06-11

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback about the vehicle design. I've noticed that the blower is located right in front of the front passenger seat, which has caused some inconvenience for me. Unfortunately, I've had to replace it three times since 2015, and it's not covered. Additionally, if someone is stretching out, it's very easy to accidentally break it. I'm actually experiencing some issues with it again for the fourth time. Just wanted to bring this to your attention in case it's something that can be improved. Thank you!

  5. Rodrick Nienow 2024-03-26

I recently purchased a 15' Kia Sportage with low mileage, but unfortunately the engine blew at 75K miles and required a complete replacement. However, I must commend Kia for their exceptional customer service as they replaced the engine for free. Although this particular engine model has had issues in the past, Kia issued an ECU update in 2018 to address these problems and even added a lifetime warranty on the engine. While I must mention the drive-train issue in my review, I still believe that the car is a great choice for those looking for a safe, functional, stylish, and affordable ride. Therefore, I am giving it a 2-star rating.

Positive 2016 Kia Sportage car reviews

  1. Constantin Osinski 2024-10-18

I really love this car! The only reason I'm letting it go is because it's leased and I got a job that requires a lot of driving.

  2. Rogelio Kemmer 2024-10-09

The ride may feel a bit stiff and you may feel the up and down of the road, but overall it's a good value for your money. The combined mpg could be better, though.

  3. Mitchell Rohan 2024-09-16

The car is great! It handles well in the snow and has great mpg. Although the Bluetooth can be finicky at times and won't connect to your phone, the safety features like traction control really help with the front wheel drive slipping a little on ice. The only minor issue I've noticed is that the driver's side seatbelt sometimes gets stuck in the door, but it's easily avoidable by being careful not to slam the door. It's worth noting that I've seen similar dents on other Sportage models, but as long as you're careful, it shouldn't be a problem. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

  4. Cyril Hoeger 2024-08-25

The mileage may not be awesome but this buggy gets out of its own way. It has great pickup. The front driver's seat fits me to a tee! Best car yet! But be aware that you will not get Siren Red in the newer models!

  5. Alfredo Stanton 2024-08-24

    Great vehicle!
