1995 Chevrolet Caprice problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Caprice is a full-size car produced by Chevrolet in North America for the 1965 to 1996 model years. Full-size Chevrolet sales peaked in 1965 with over a million sold. It was the most popular car in the U.S. in the 1960s and early 1970s, which, during its lifetime, included the Biscayne, Bel Air, and Impala.

Introduced in mid-1965 as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop, Chevrolet offered a full line of Caprice models for the 1966 and subsequent model years, including a "formal hardtop" coupe and an Estate station wagon. The 1971 to 1976 models are the largest Chevrolets ever built. The downsized 1977 and restyled 1991 models were awarded Motor Trend Car of the Year. Production ended in 1996.

From 2011 to 2017, the Caprice nameplate returned to North America as a full-size, rear wheel drive police vehicle, a captive import from Australia built by General Motors's subsidiary Holden—the police vehicle is a rebadged version of the Holden WM/WN Caprice. The nameplate also had a civilian and police presence in the Middle East from 1999 to 2017, where the imported Holden Statesman/Caprice built by Holden was marketed as the Chevrolet Caprice in markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-19
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1995 CHEVROLET CAPRICE AND RECENTLY WHEN I TRIED TO START MY CAR NOTICED THAT IT WOULD NOT START. I JUMPED THE CAR AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO RUN BUT ONCE I TURNED IT OFF WAS UNABLE TO RE-START THE CAR. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE BATTERY WAS LEAKING AROUND THE POSITIVE TERMINAL CONNECTION. THE BATTERY WAS A AC DELCO 78-6YR BATTERY WITH SIDE-MOUNT TERMINALS. WHEN I REMOVED THE BATTERY FROM THE CAR I COULD SEE THAT IT HAD BEEN LEAKING AND CONTINUED TO LEAK ACID ALL OVER THE BATTERY TRAY AND MY GARAGE FLOOR. WHEN I WENT TO A LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER (HARBOR CHEVROLET OF LONG BEACH) THEY OFFERED ME NOT HELP BECAUSE I NO LONGER HAD THE RECEIPT AND HAD NOT PURCHASED THE BATTERY FROM THEM. I THOUGHT THIS WAS NOT RIGHT SINCE THE BATTERY WAS LESS THAN SIX YEARS OLD AND HAD THE REGISTRATION CODES CLEARLY VISIBLE ON THE TOP OF THE BATTERY CASE. MY CAR WAS DAMAGED BY THE LEAKY BATTER AND I HAD TO BUY A NEW BATTERY (OF COURSE NOT AN AC DELCO PRODUCT) WHICH SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE CASE SINCE THE BATTERY SHOULD STILL HAVE BEEN UNDER WARRANTY. *TR

STEERING,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • Components: STEERING,SEATS
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING A 1995 CHEVROLET CAPRICE AND WAS STOPPED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ENTER THE HIGHWAY. I WAS HIT IN THE REAR BY A CAR GOING 50 MPH WHO DID NOT SEE THAT I WAS STOPPED. THE DRIVERS SEAT COLLAPSED INTO THE RECLINED POSITION AND THREW ME INTO THE REAR SEAT. MY SEAT BELT WAS ON AND LIMITED MY MOVEMENT. IN ADDITION, I PULLED ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND BROKE IT AT THE 10 O'CLOCK AND PARTIALLY SEPERATED AT THE 2 O'CLOCK POSITIONS. THE FAILURE OF THE SEAT CAUSED INJURY TO MYSELF WITH NO SUPPORT TO MY NECK AND HEAD. MY QUESTION IS: IS THE SEAT DESIGNED TO SUPPORT MY WEIGHT (6'0, 194 LBS.) UNDER THESE CONDITIONS OR IS IT DESIGNED TO COLLASPE AS IT DID ALLOWING ME TO COME UNSECURRED FROM THE SEAT BELT RESTRAINT SYSTEM? SECONDLY, WAS THERE A SAFETY RECALL, SERVICE BULLETIN, OR DEFECT INVESTIGATION ON THIS VEHICLE? I EXAMINED YOUR WEB SITE AND FOUND NO INDICATION OR REPORT ON THIS SITUATION. STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-07-25
  • VIN: 1G1BL52P8SR
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: STEERING WHEEL COLLAPSED (BROKE OFF) AT THE TWO HORIZONTAL POINTS - - 3 O'CLOCK AND 9 O'CLOCK POINTS AT A ROUTINE "ROCKING" AT A STOP. NOT AN EMERGENCY STOP OR SUDDEN STOP; JUST A ROUTINE STOP AT A LIGHT. I HAD NEVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN IN ANY VEHICLE UNLESS INVOLVED IN A CRASH, MUCH LESS FROM A FRAIL MAN AS MYSELF WHO DOES NOT POSSESS SUPERHUMAN POWERS. I ASKED MECHANICS IF THEY HAD EVER SEEN THIS OCCUR AND THE ANSWER WAS NEGATIVE. I CONTACTED KELLY CHEVROLET (HALLANDALE, FL) AND THEY ALSO TOLD ME TO NEVER HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN, UNLESS THE VEHICLE WAS IN AN CRASH. SINCE THEN I HAVE CONTACTED GM AND HAVE RECEIVED NOTHING BUT RUN-AROUNDS. THEY ASSIGNED IT CASE NO. 1-21646074, THEN, THEY GOT IT MIXED UP WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S CASE BY THE NAME OF FENNIMORE. I REPLIED TO THEM TO CORRECT THE NAME ERROR AND PROVIDE THEM WITH FURTHER INFO AND I RECEIVED TWO REPLIES FROM TWO DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIVES WITHIN 3 HOURS OF EACH OTHER. THE FIRST ONE, A MS. NEJDI, WHO SAID TO CONTINUE WORKING WITH THE ORIGINAL REPRESENTATIVE (A MS. WEIR, WHOM HAD DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, OTHER THAN MIX ME UP WITH A MR. FENNIMORE). THE SECOND RESPONSE CAME FROM THE ORIGINAL REPRESENTATIVE (MS. WEIR, ADDRESSING ME AS MR. FENNIMORE, AGAIN). SHE SAID IN THIS EMAIL THE CASE HAD BEEN CLOSED DUE TO MY LACK OF RESPONSE. IN FACT, I HAD RESPONDED AND EVEN ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT HER ERROR OF THE NAME AND SAID CORRECTION WAS ACKNOWLEDGED BY MS. NEJDI, AS PREVOUSLY STATED HEREIN. THE DISTURBING PART ABOUT THIS IS GM'S FAILURE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. A STEERING WHEEL SHOULD NOT COLLAPSE AT A ROUTINE STOP REGARDLESS OF THE AGE OR MILEAGE OF THE CAR WITHOUT BEING INVOLVED IN A CRASH. GM IS ACTING TOTALLY INCOMPETENT IN HANDLING THE COMPLAINT AS WELL AS IRRESPONSIBLE BY IGNORING A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE SAVED EACH EMAIL TO AND FROM GM TO PROVE THEIR DISREGARD FOR SAFETY AND MISHANDLING OF THE MATTER. I WOULD APPRECIATE THE NTHSA'S INVOLVEMENT IN THIS CASE.*AK

  • Summary: FUEL LEAK AT TANK FIRST OCCURRED APRIL 22 THIS YEAR. FUEL LEVEL SENDER SEAL REPLACED. MAY !7 FUEL LEVEL SENDER DEFECTIVE, FUEL LEAK. REPLACED FUEL TANK, SENDING UNIT SEAL, FUEL PUMP. TODAY-JULY 18, MASSIVE FUEL LEAK AT TANK WITH GASOLINE PUDDLING UNDER CAR WHILE ENGINE IDLING. 20 MINUTES OF IDLING CAUSED OVER 1 GALLON OF FUEL TO BE EXPELLED FROM TANK. INSPECTION SHOWS POSSIBLE DEFECT IN FUEL VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM CAUSING EXCESS FUEL TANK PRESSURE, SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE FUEL TANK SEAL FAILURE WHERE SENDING UNIT MOUNTS TO TANK. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. A DISCARDED CIGARETTE COULD CAUSE FUEL VAPORS TO IGNITE. THIS LEAK WILL CONTINUE TO OCCUR UNTIL SOURCE OF EXCESSIVE FUEL TANK PRESSURE CAN BE DETERMINED. IT MAY BE THE RESULT OF FAILURE TO MAINTAIN FUEL VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM OR A COMPONENT FAILURE. IF SO, WHY SHOULD A FAILURE RESULT IN MASSIVE FUEL LEAKAGE? THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH LIFE THREATENING POTENTIAL AND SHOULD RECEIVE YOUR HIGHEST PRIORITY IN FOLLOW UP.*AK

Positive 1995 Chevrolet Caprice car reviews

I bought this car with 69,000 miles on it. I chose the Chevy over a Crown Vic because it's more fuel efficient and a little bit bigger. Plus, the car's fit and finish is more of an everyday working man's finish. It can even tow up to 5,000 lbs! And with the 4.3 litre engine, there's plenty of power.

What can I say? It's a Caprice! I've had mine for 3 years now and put 45k miles on it. It's been very reliable so far, with only a few minor electrical issues. This car has never broken down on me and left me stranded. The L99 (4.3L), which is identical to the LT1 (5.7L) but with a smaller stroke and bore, is very adequate for city driving, especially with some power programming. The gas mileage is very good for a 2-ton vehicle.

Hi there! I wanted to share that I recently purchased a Caprice from a small dealer who had a ton of them from the Florida Highway Patrol. It's the 9C-1 model, which is actually a police pursuit package. It has some really cool features like the 5.7 liter (350) V8 engine, similar to the Impala SS, as well as special suspension, brakes, heating, and cooling systems. What's even better is that you could buy three of these for the price of one SS and still have an amazing ride!

I love driving my 94' Chevy Caprice! This car demands respect on the road, and it sure gets it. It handles incredibly well despite its size. I've never had a single problem with it since I purchased it. With 128,000 miles on it, it runs like new: smooth, quiet, and fast...I wish I could find another car like it. I am a proud owner of this 94' Chevy and I absolutely love it!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love this car! I got it for a great deal - only $500 - from my workplace in exchange for a new 2008 Lucerne. It had only 65400 miles on it and was previously owned by an old man. I've never had any problems with it. I have the small V8 4.3 l engine and I use Castrol Synthetic and Exxon regular in all my cars. With a full tank, I can go about 360/390 miles every 2 weeks! The only issue I've had is with the digital speed, which goes on and off once in a while. Overall, I think it's a fantastic vehicle!
