Common Isuzu Rodeo 2000 problems

The Isuzu Rodeo, produced between 1990 and 2004, has been known for several common problems across various model years. The most prevalent issue is engine failure, affecting nearly every model year, with the 2000 model being the most problematic.

  • Engine Failure: Engine failure is the most frequently reported problem in the Isuzu Rodeo, affecting a significant number of vehicles across multiple model years. The 2000 model has received the most complaints, with an average cost to fix of $2,700 and an average mileage of 67,000 miles when the problem occurs.
  • Rear Suspension Separating from Frame: This issue is more prevalent in the 2001 Isuzu Rodeo, with an average cost to fix of $2,000 and an average mileage of 128,000 miles when the problem occurs. The rear suspension of the Rodeo can separate from the frame, potentially causing handling issues and compromising the vehicle's safety.
  • Air Bag Problems: Certain 2000 Isuzu Rodeo models have been recalled due to faulty air bag modules, specifically the passenger-side air bags. This issue can lead to airbags not deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury for occupants.
  • 4WD Engagement Problems: Some Isuzu Rodeo owners have reported issues with the 4WD system not engaging properly. When the 4WD is shifted, it may make a loud clicking or knocking noise and jump around. This can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out components or damaged wiring.
  • City Gas Mileage Issues: Some Rodeo owners have reported poor city gas mileage, with significantly lower mileage in city driving compared to highway driving. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as engine problems, transmission issues, or poor aerodynamics.
  • Alternator Failure: The Isuzu Rodeo is prone to alternator failure, which can be caused by oil leaks that contaminate the alternator. This issue can lead to various electrical problems, such as difficulty starting the vehicle or dimming headlights.
  • Transmission Problems: The Isuzu Rodeo's transmission has been known to have issues, with some owners reporting problems as early as 100,000 miles. These issues can include rough shifting, slipping, or complete transmission failure.
  • Fuel Pump Sending Unit Failure: The fuel pump sending unit in the Isuzu Rodeo has been known to fail, causing issues with fuel delivery and potentially leading to stalling or difficulty starting the vehicle.
  • Valve Train Noise: Some Isuzu Rodeo owners have reported noisy valve trains, which can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out components or lack of lubrication.
  • ABS Light On Due to Damaged Wiring: The ABS light in the Isuzu Rodeo can come on due to damaged wiring, which can lead to issues with the vehicle's anti-lock braking system.

In summary, the Isuzu Rodeo has several common problems, with engine failure being the most prevalent issue. Other problems include rear suspension separation from the frame, air bag issues, 4WD engagement problems, city gas mileage issues, alternator failure, transmission problems, fuel pump sending unit failure, valve train noise, and ABS light issues due to damaged wiring. While the Isuzu Rodeo can be a reliable vehicle with regular maintenance, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider the costs of potential repairs before purchasing.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-08-10
  • VIN: 4S2CK58W3Y4
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I BOUGHT MY 2000 RODEO NEW AND IT CURRENTLY HAS 37000 ACTUAL MILES. I RECENTLY SAW RUST IN THE DRIVEWAY. I TOOK THIS CAR TO A HONDA BODY SHOP TO SEE THE UNDERBODY. BEFORE PUTTING IT ON THE LIFT THEY SAW THAT THE FRAME WAS EXCESSIVELY RUSTED. ONCE IN THE AIR THEY LOOKED AT THE WHOLE UNDERSIDE AND SAID THAT THE FRAME AND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WERE HOLED WITH RUST. I ASKED IF ANY OF THIS WAS REPAIRABLE.THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT DO THE WORK BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT ASSUME THE LIABILITY OF A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THIS VEHICLE HAD THE FIXES PRESCRIBED BY CAMPAIGN 10V-436 SB 10-11-S002A COMPLETED AT SELLERS TRUCK CENTER IN FARMINGTON HILLS, MI ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2011. THIS ADDRESSED THE REAR SUSPENSION BUT OBVIOUSLY THE CORROSION WAS SO PERVASIVE THAT THIS CAMPAIGN WAS JUST A BAND-AID. AS I READ THE VARIOUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE I STRONGLY AGREE THAT THESE CARS ARE A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE BOUGHT BACK BY ISUZU AND TAKEN OFF THE ROAD. LIKE MANY OTHERS I HAVE SIDELINED MINE AND BEEN FORCED TO BUY ANOTHER CAR TO REPLACE IT WAY BEFORE IT WAS NECESSARY. IRONICALLY, THIS CAR IS IN ALMOST PRISTINE CONDITION FROM THE BODY UP. I HAVE CONTACTED ISUZU AND RECEIVED A LETTER IN RETURN IN WHICH THEY ASSERT THAT THEY DID EVERYTHING THEY HAD TO AND THAT THE ORIGINAL RECALL DID NOT REQUIRE MORE THAN DEALING WITH THE REAR SUSPENSION AND THEREFORE I WAS OUT OF LUCK. IN THE LETTER THEY SAID I COULD CALL FOR MORE INFORMATION. I DID AND THEY OFFERED TO 'REDO THE PROCEDURES OF THE ORIGINAL RECALL.' WHEN I POINTED OUT THAT I HAVE A CAR THAT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT THE FACILITY THEY WANTED IT TAKEN TO IS AN HOUR AND A HALF AWAY THEIR COMMENT WAS 'NO ONE SAID YOU HAD TO DRIVE IT. YOU COULD TRAILER IT.' THIS ISN'T A GOOD ALTERNATIVE EITHER ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAVE A HONDA DEALER LESS THAN TWO MILES FROM MY HOUSE AND THE HONDA PASSPORT SUFFERED ALL THE SAME

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-04-11
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS
  • Summary: I THINK THE TIME HAS COME FOR THE NHTSA TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER GETTING THE REMAINING ISUZU RODEO'S OFF THE ROAD - THEY ARE NOT SAFE. I LIKE A MAJORITY OF OTHER ISUZU OWNERS SUFFER FROM EXCESSIVE CORROSION ALL OVER THE FRAME - I HAD THE RECALL REPAIR DONE AND THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE TREATED BUT IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE AND NOW I AM AT THE POINT WHERE I HAVE A RELIABLE EVERYDAY CAR THAT STARTS UP RIGHT AWAY, RUNS WELL AND CUTS THROUGH THE SNOW (4X4) BUT DUE TO MANUFACTURING ERRORS NOW HAS A FLAKY, BRITTLE HOLE RIDDEN WHEEL WELL FRAME ON BOTH SIDES THAT WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AFTER THE WHEEL GOES FLIPPING OFF THE CAR AND CAUSING IT TO FLIP OVER. ISUZU HAS TURNED A BLIND EYE AND WON'T TAKE ANY CALLS (ONCE YOU FIND THEM). A RECALL MUST BE ISSUED AND MAKE THE MANUFACTURER TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHATEVER SHADY PROCESSES THEY USED ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE. I AM VERY UPSET THAT I NEED TO GO OUT AND PURCHASE A NEW CAR AND THAT I HAVE NO VALUE IN THIS CAR DUE TO THE FACT THAT I CANNOT SELL AN UNSAFE CAR. MAKE THE MANUFACTURER BUY BACK THESE VEHICLES OR RECALL THEM! TOO MANY COMPLAINTS - AND YOU CANNOT IGNORE THE SAME REPEATED TREND - EVERYONE IN THE NORTHEAST HAS EXPERIENCED THIS HORRIBLE PAIN! *TR

  • Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT WOULD TRIGGER A PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, TOO MUCH GENERANT CAN CAUSE THE INFLATOR MODULE TO EXPLODE. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE EXPLODES, METAL AND PLASTIC DEBRIS COULD CAUSE SEVERE INJURY TO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG UNIT.

Negative Isuzu Rodeo 2000 car reviews

  1. Russel Corkery 2024-10-25

With 52,000 miles on my 2000 Rodeo, the ride has become increasingly bouncy, to the point where it feels like a carnival ride. This has led to a high rattle quotient, with everything rattling. Unfortunately, Isuzu dealers are few and far between, and my dealer was unable to identify problems on the first visit, making each repair a multi-visit battle. However, I was eventually able to win many of these battles. If you have the means, I would recommend looking elsewhere, as most other vehicles out there are superior to this one. It's best to run, not walk, out of your Isuzu dealer.

I purchased my Isuzu brand new in 2000 and it has been a dependable truck, except for some issues with the fuel system that needed replacement. Unfortunately, the warranty did not cover it, so I would advise against purchasing an extended warranty. Additionally, there have been some problems with a rattling noise from the engine and the CD player, which has been replaced three times. Currently, the CD player is not working and the extended warranty did not cover it. The brakes are also in bad condition. On a separate occasion, the back windshield shattered on its own during the third year, but the warranty did not cover it because the window was tinted. Lastly, the keyless entry fob works intermittently, mostly when I am very close to the truck, despite replacing the batteries several times. Please take these issues into consideration before making a purchase.

The ride quality and transmission performance require improvement.

I bought it because I really liked the design (still do!) and the 100,000 mile warranty. Unfortunately, when I did have a problem with the fuel pump, the warranty had just expired, which was a bummer. It ended up costing me $1,200. On top of that, it's burning a quart of oil every three thousand miles, which isn't great, especially since I take such good care of it.

This is one of the more attractive SUVs and I'm pleased with its performance, although it does have some issues. One of them is the wind noise when driving on the highway. Another issue is the climate controls, which seem as though they belong in my old GEO. Overall, I would rate it a 5 out of 10.

Positive Isuzu Rodeo 2000 car reviews

  1. Pete Ernser 2024-09-09

I see that you have always had an Isuzu. I completely agree with you that they are very long lasting and reliable. The Rodeo, which is the mid-size one, offers a lot of SUV for the dollar.

  2. Olen Cormier 2024-09-02

This vehicle now has 30K miles and I have not had any problems that required repairs. It is fast and easy to drive. However, it is now getting a little bouncy.

  3. Marco Jones 2024-08-15

The rodeo is a great vehicle for its price, despite having a few drawbacks. Every vehicle has its own set of issues, and the rodeo is no exception. I did experience a few minor issues such as the seatback latch cover falling off, the plastic piece that covers the door light coming off, and a slight squeak somewhere (although I'm not sure where). The ride can be a little rough, but it's still better than an expedition where my head hit the ceiling when going over a pothole. The power is good, but not excellent, and it can be a bit sluggish on the highway. The brakes are efficient enough, although I do experience the anti-lock shake every now and again. The handling is a little on the looser side, but not enough to make a significant difference.

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoy the Isuzu Rodeo!

  5. Enoch Doyle 2024-07-04

Leased for 4 years. Within this time, only had a sensor for the check engine go bad and the paint on the rims peeled off. However, overall it has been a good and reliable vehicle.
