2003 Jeep Liberty problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.

Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.

The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

Common 2003 Jeep Liberty problems

The 2003 Jeep Liberty has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most prevalent issues is related to airbags, with 386 out of 1,336 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) pointing to airbag failure and airbag warning lights. Despite three recalls issued between 2012 and 2015, airbag complaints continue to be reported as late as December 2022.

Suspension issues are another major concern for the 2003 Jeep Liberty, with 431 complaints filed. Drivers have reported that the front driver's side suspension suddenly drops, causing the tire to go flat. This issue has been linked to a lower ball joint that may fracture and is still happening 13 years after the last recall for the problem.

A significant number of drivers have reported a fuel tank strap rusting through and causing the fuel tank to drop to the ground, potentially leading to a major fire. This issue follows a recall for another fuel tank fire hazard, where the tank could suffer a puncture in the event of a rear-end collision.

The 2003 Jeep Liberty's ride has been criticized for not being smooth, with one driver's mechanic commenting, "That's just how Jeeps are". The interior of the Liberty is spacious, but the bumpy ride can make it uncomfortable for passengers, particularly on long trips.

The 2003 Jeep Liberty has an impressive 29 cubic feet of storage space with the seats up and 69 cubic feet with the seats down, making it suitable for camping trips or carrying large items. However, the vehicle's payload capacity is limited, with 2.4L models capable of carrying 1,347 pounds and 3.7L models carrying up to 1,530 pounds.

In summary, the 2003 Jeep Liberty has several common problems, including airbag failures, suspension issues, and fuel tank strap rusting. The vehicle's ride quality has also been criticized for not being smooth, and while it offers ample storage space, its payload capacity is limited.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-02
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1j4gl48k53w
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The airbag deployed on my wife that was in her third trimester pregnancy while driving on the highway, which left the baby and my wife at risk. She was sent to the emergency for abdominal trauma. Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or RAM dealer were unable to locate a recall number for the Jeep Airbag System Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module. It was a very long process and Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or Ram dealership located on I-10 kept giving us different responses about our airbag being at the dealership and then later finding out that they did not have the airbag in stock. The dealership offered $500 to keep the vehicle, but I refused and just wanted them to repair the airbag. The dealership kept calling us to pick up the vehicle and in order to do that, we would have to get it towed to where we lived. Luckily, a staff member at the dealership informed us that if we were to pick up the Jeep at that time then we would be fully responsible for it and could not hold the dealership accountable if something worse happened. Instead of following through with towing it, we did our own research and discovered that there were several similar testimonies about this issue for the same year make and model, (2003 Jeep Liberty). We called corporate several times and they were unable to locate the recall number nor give us a solution. After several months had passed, we finally received a recall number via text and email from Mopar.com. ( FCA Recall # R06). We then contacted the dealership with the recall number and confirmed that this was an issue that needed to be taken care of. They took several months to locate an airbag and finally repair the ORC module. Once the vehicle was ready for pick up, they did not exactly walk us through the vehicle and new parts installed. The Jeep was in poor condition; it was left outside, uncovered, and paint is now peeling. Seatbelts do not spring back, dash lights are dim and steering is screeching, engine light is on. This took a total of 8 months.

  • Summary: Front lower control arm ball joints are worn on both sides an it's only the bottom ones. No Safety hazard yet but I'm sure if it fails it will be scary. Multiple other vehicles made prior to the moth this one was manufactured had a recall on the lower ball joints. I believe this vehicle is also affected by faulty front lower control arm ball joints. SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-10
  • VIN: 1j4gl48k13w
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS
  • Summary: On 7/10 I'm driving down the road towards the freeway. I hear a very loud pop that startles me. I pull over & discover lower ball joint has separated causing the lower control arm to slip out of socket into the wheel & than separate from wheel. I mean its still attached to the vehicle but vehicle is completely disabled. It caused significant damage to the right front wheel and somewhat minor damage to the right front fender. Theres literally metal shaving all over the road from it carving the metal out of my wheel. Get home and my boyfriend tells me that he's discovered 3 safety recalls. So we call FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) they said they would have it towed to the dealership no problem but they needed a $103 for the tow that they would reimburse later. They told us to pick any dealership. So FCA has it towed from my driveway on 7/13 at 8:45pm to Lithia Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Portland Dealership. Safety recall F23 was replaced by the dealership but the manufacturer (FCA) has not fixed the damage and is denying responsibility. FCA calls on 9/16 to finally tell us that a certified inspector has determined the damage to the wheel and fender is not from the recall. Which is a lie and I can take it to a mechanic and have that verified. They also go on to state they are not going to reimburse the $103 for the tow. So we go to the dealership to pick up the car the next day. I speak with Will in the service department and ask to see a copy of the inspection that the FCA is talking about. Will tells me that FCA never sent an inspector out and there is no inspection report stating that the damage is not from the recall. I have lots of photos of everything. Please contact me

  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag electronic control module and the side impact sensors, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R60.

  • Summary: Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2002 and 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, through March 28, 2003, and 2002 through 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, through May 23, 2003. A component in the air bag control module may fail causing the front airbags, side curtain airbags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module, free of charge. Owners were notified of the recall by interim letter in January 2013. The remedy for affected Liberty vehicles is expected to be available in April 2013. The remedy for affected Grand Cherokee vehicles is expected to be available later in the year. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

  • Manufacturer: TIMKEN CORPORATION
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB
  • Summary: Timken is recalling certain non-formed, front wheel hubs, part number HA599467, which were sold to retail and automotive distributors in the automobile aftermarket as front wheel hub replacements designed only for use on certain 2002 through 2005, 4X4, non-ABS, Jeep Liberty vehicles. These front wheel hub units can be mistakenly sold to owners and installed on 4X2 versions of the Jeep vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the non-formed hub unit is installed on a Jeep Liberty 4x2 model (which does not use an axle nut for hub retention), the vehicle wheel will not be secure and a front wheel separation may occur, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Timken has notified retail stores that have received the subject parts. The front wheel hubs will be replaced free of charge. Owners who may have purchased the affected units should contact Timken at 1-330-471-3693 for more information. This recall is being conducted by Timken, not Chrysler/Jeep.

Negative 2003 Jeep Liberty car reviews

  1. Raphael Block 2024-10-08

Although my Jeep has been a reliable vehicle for the first few years, it has recently been spending more time in the shop than on the road. Despite the dealership's attempts to fix the issue by replacing the crank sensor, the problem persists. However, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon. As a loyal Jeep owner, I am disappointed with the recent performance of my vehicle, but I am hopeful that this is just a minor setback. I have noticed a few other reviews mentioning similar issues, but I am confident that Jeep will take responsibility and address any factory defects. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The Comfort-Seats are too high and cut off circulation at my knees. In terms of fuel economy, it gets 11-14 on the highway when on cruise control. Although I only do 1% of my traveling in the city, I would hate to face the reality check on that issue as it could cost me approximately $250-300 a month in fuel costs. This is almost like having another car payment. The interior design could be improved as there are no lights in the middle, only in the front or way in the back, which means I have to use a flashlight. The exterior design could also be better as the fender steel bolts discolor very quickly and the orange runs down the side of the truck. In terms of build quality, you get what you pay for. As for reliability, every time I move from 2Wheel to 4Wheel, the truck goes in neutral and stops and burns rubber if I am not paying attention.

I've owned this Jeep since new and it's been a lot of fun to drive. My wife drives it to and from work, which is only two miles total. However, after it turned 50,000 miles, some little things started to loosen up, such as the front fenders and shift knob. Unfortunately, I had to replace the alternator twice and went through three batteries. Now, with eighty thousand miles, I had to have the transmission seals and transfer case for the four-wheel drive replaced. If I ever buy one again, I will definitely consider purchasing the extended warranty plan. It's a shame that other vehicles come with a 100 thousand mile and ten-year warranty for free.

  4. Brooks Murray 2024-06-06

Fun vehicle! However, the gas mileage is not as good as what Jeep claims. Also, while this Jeep looks large on the outside, the interior is rather small.

  5. Emanuel Kuvalis 2024-06-03

It's been almost two years since we got our Jeep, and we've already put 106,000 miles on it! My mother got one a month before I did, and hers only has 13,000 miles on it. We definitely do a lot of driving, but we've loved every minute of it in this vehicle. Even after hitting 100,000 miles, we were pleasantly surprised that the only issue we had was a slight A/C problem. Every morning, it starts up with no problem at all. However, we're expecting a new baby and need a vehicle with a 3rd row. It's a shame that this model doesn't come with one, but we're excited to find a new car that will fit our growing family's needs!

Positive 2003 Jeep Liberty car reviews

  1. Ben Cassin 2025-01-04

I can't believe my jeep has 180K and still runs like new. I have not had one single mechanical issue with it. I've only done oil changes every 5K, an occasional engine tune-up, and some new brakes 50K back for maintenance. Do you think I'm just lucky or is this actually a decently made US vehicle?

  2. Modesto Lemke 2025-01-02

The Jeep Liberty 2003 V6 3.7L 4x4 is a fantastic vehicle! Despite reading many negative reviews, I have never experienced any issues with mine. I have driven a wide variety of vehicles, from a Hyundai Accent to a Dodge Ram, and this is by far my favorite! I find it hard to believe when people claim they have to replace their brakes every 4000 miles. Perhaps they are not paying attention to the car in front of them and are slamming on their brakes frequently. Overall, I highly recommend the Jeep Liberty 2003 V6 3.7L 4x4!

  3. Markus Konopelski 2024-10-15

I've had my Jeep for 8 months and I absolutely love it! The rack and pinion steering and the power make it so much fun to drive. The suspension is amazing, whether you're on or off the road (I've done both). This is the first vehicle I've owned that can cheer me up after a rough day at work. So far, I haven't encountered any mechanical issues. I would highly recommend the Liberty to anyone considering a 'cute ute'. It's not just for soccer moms, and the name Sport is definitely fitting.

  4. Tyreek Mitchell 2024-10-13

I love my Little Jeep Renegade, but unfortunately, I had to give it to my wife. Now, I only get to drive it when she's tired or on the weekends. At least I was allowed to take it to the Smokey Mountains and give it a 'Manly' ride. Although I lost my driving rights after getting mud on the hood, rack, doors, and everywhere else, it's still easy to drive and feels safe from other bad drivers. It's a great sleeper for a passenger side seat. I had no problems driving it in Atlanta city and the local suburbs. I would highly recommend the Jeep over any Toyota RAV4. I just hope I don't change my mind after its first maintenance checkup.

  5. Emanuel Halvorson 2024-10-07

I've been driving a 4wd Renegade for 3 months and it has been an excellent experience. From desert off-road to snowy mountain driving, the performance, reliability and fit/finish have been top-notch. While the gas mileage is not great (about 17.5 combined city/highway), it is reflective of a fairly heavy vehicle with a strong engine.
