2004 Jeep Liberty problems
The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.
Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.
The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

Common 2004 Jeep Liberty problems
The 2004 Jeep Liberty, while praised for its acceleration, solid braking, and powerful engine, has faced a number of common problems reported by owners. These issues include suspension problems, front wheel detachment, premature rust, powertrain issues, and difficulty shifting due to transmission fluid neglect.
One of the most prevalent problems with the 2004 Jeep Liberty is suspension issues, with 450 reported complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Powertrain issues are not incredibly common for a 20-year-old SUV, but difficulty shifting can occur if the previous owner neglected to change the transmission fluid regularly. The 2004 Liberty has 13 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which is about on par for a twenty-year-old vehicle, but it's essential to understand that Jeeps are high-maintenance vehicles.
Another issue reported by owners is the failure of power windows, especially the driver seat rear window. This malfunction often occurs unexpectedly, impeding the vehicle's usability and causing inconvenience. The repair costs associated with these power window failures vary but can add up if the problem persists or affects multiple windows.
Brake lock-up incidents have also been reported, posing serious risks to driver safety. Despite multiple repair attempts, this problem tends to persist, raising concerns about the reliability of the Liberty's braking system.
Engine-related issues, such as oil light failures, gasket burns, and acceleration problems, have been reported, particularly with the 3.4L engine. This has led to questions about the overall durability of this engine.
Fuel system defects, including fuel inefficiency and related system issues, also plague the 2004 Jeep Liberty. The 42RLE transmission has some common problems, such as the valve block failure, which can be costly to repair if not addressed early on.
The electronic components of the Jeep Liberty, such as the actuator controlling the door lock function, can age over time, leading to power door lock problems. This issue can be caused by the actuator or binding or latches, which may result in squeaking or grinding noises when trying to lock or unlock the door.
Power window motor failure is another common problem, often caused by the motor burning out when the window glass gets frozen and stuck in the up position. In this situation, replacing the regulator motor or the whole assembly is necessary.
Internal engine valve issues can lead to the engine light coming on or flashing on the dashboard, indicating that the intake valves require replacement.
These common problems with the 2004 Jeep Liberty should be considered when purchasing a used vehicle, and potential buyers should be prepared for the high maintenance associated with Jeep ownership.

I requested the vehicle be towed bc at approximately 530am i was driving the vehicle in the parking lot and turned right out of the parking lot in order to pull to a stop sign. Shortly after turning the wheel to the right I heard grinding that got progressively worse as I continued to coast to the stop sign. Then i heard a loud noise a and couldn’t move the vehicle. The tire fell off and I got out and fluid was leaking from vehicle. I researched recall for this vehicle and there were several regarding ball joints and knuckles rusting and breaking. I called the dealership days after it was towed and Spoke with Landon (sales) @935am he noted there was a Recall on ball joints 9/12/2006 and he said he would print the document he will review notes pass to Corey (service) and I should get a call back the following Monday. I never heard back. I called the dealership to follow up on status of recall and repairs. I never received an any confirmation that any research was done on the recall but I did approve the repairs. However I continue to find so much information on problems with this issue . I would like to be reimbursed for the repairs. - Remedy: Timken has notified retail stores that have received the subject parts. The front wheel hubs will be replaced free of charge. Owners who may have purchased the affected units should contact Timken at 1-330-471-3693 for more information. This recall is being conducted by Timken, not Chrysler/Jeep.

I have the Columbia edition which looks rugged and tough, but is equipped like a limited edition. I have to say, I think it's an exceptional value. The ride, performance, handling, and styling are all first class, and the build quality is markedly superior to some previous Jeep offerings. The only real flaw is the gas mileage, but hey, it keeps me inside my lease mileage, right? Overall, I tried out the main competitors and for me, this is by far the finest combination of price and capability in the price range.

Bought this vehicle brand new. I drove every other SUV out there. I didn't want to try a Jeep but my husband insisted. We bought it right on the spot after the test drive. I have never had a problem. It is like a little tank in the winter.

I love this car! It always makes me feel good whenever I approach it. I haven't felt this good about a new vehicle, ever. I really like the engine size, there are no delays when pulling into traffic. The response is great, and the mileage is better than most. I would definitely recommend everyone drive a Jeep, but lately, I am noticing more and more people already are.

I bought my Liberty used with 140k on it. I put 34,000 miles on it in one year, with 90% of those miles being on the highway. It always gave me a smooth ride and was so fun to drive. It was also incredibly reliable. Although I had to replace the transfer case and front differential, considering the amount I drove in one year, it was well worth it. Sadly, a week after getting it back from the repairs, I flipped it. However, it did a complete barrel roll and kept me safe. I didn't have a scratch on me, although I wish the same could be said for the Jeep. In any event, it kept me safe and was a fun, reliable vehicle that was also capable off-road. I will miss mine dearly and would highly recommend one!

I previously owned a Jeep Cherokee, but the salesperson convinced me to buy the Liberty. Unfortunately, I don't like it as much as the Cherokee and the gas mileage is poor. Looking back, I wish I had gone with my initial desire and purchased the Cherokee.
