1993 Mercury Villager problems

The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.

Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.

The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

  • VIN: 4M2DV11W9PD
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THIS IS ABOUT MY 1993 MERCURY VILLAGER. AFTER VIEWING YOUR SITE, IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEM WITH MY CAR IS WIDESPREAD. THE BOLTS THAT CONNECT THE MANIFOLD TO THE ENGINE BLOCK SHEARED OFF. I HAD THE REPAIR DONE IN MAY OF 1998 AND ALSO CONTACTED THE LINCOLN MERCURY DIVISION OF FORD. I EVEN SENT THEM TWO OF THE SHEARED BOLTS. SINCE THAT TIME, THE BOLTS ON THE FRONT MANIFOLD HAVE SHEARED. I NEVER EVEN RECEIVED AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM FORD IN RESPONSE TO MY LETTER. THE ENGINE NOW IS VERY NOISY AND I BROUGHT IT IN TO MY MUFFLER MECHANIC ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO AND HE NOTED THE SHEARED BOLTS ON THE FRONT OF THE MANIFOLD. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHETHER NHTSA IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS OR WHETHER YOU ARE AWARE OF ANY SUCCESS WITH FORD IN GETTING THIS PROBLEM TAKEN CARE OF. IT IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS.

You won't find a better minivan for the price!

  2. Adolf Hintz 2024-07-21

It seems like your vehicle is experiencing some issues with the brakes, exhaust system, and overall performance. Additionally, the interior and upholstery may not be up to your standards, and the seats may not be very comfortable. The body hardware may also be lacking in quality. We understand how frustrating this can be and we would be happy to help you address these concerns.

Positive 1993 Mercury Villager car reviews

  1. Remington Deckow 2024-10-26

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my van. I bought it back in 1995 as the second owner and I have to say, it's been a great ride! It's a nice, heavy van with great performance and I've had no major problems with it. It's amazing to think that it's still going strong after 11 years. Thanks for listening!

  2. Porter Wolf 2024-10-19

It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with your van! Despite a few repairs to the body, it sounds like it's been reliable and ready to go. It's impressive that it came with every option available from Ford, except for leather seats. I also appreciate that they used a Nissan engine and transmission, which has a proven track record in cars like the Maxima and the 300ZX. It's great to hear that you also have a '94 Villager GS that you use, and that it's also a reliable and good van.

  3. Nicolas Ratke 2024-10-16

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with your Villager. It sounds like you've had a great time with it! You mentioned that it has been reliable and trouble-free since new, which is fantastic to hear. It's also great to know that the vehicle has a powerful and responsive engine, impressive handling, and excellent brakes. Overall, it seems like the Villager is the best mid-size minivan out there, and the newer ones are probably even better. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!

  4. Ariel Dickens 2024-08-25

Hi there! I noticed that the light bar bulbs have burned out and the replacements are quite expensive at $12 each. That seems a bit ridiculous, doesn't it? Also, I noticed that the cruise control isn't working and the washer fluid relay keeps failing. On top of that, it seems like the window motors are starting to go. Let's see what we can do to get these issues resolved for you!

  5. Davin Spencer 2024-08-04

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Villager. I've been the original owner and had the transmission rebuilt at 75,000 miles. It gets around 30 miles per gallon on the highway and about 19 in the city, which is great! The only downside is that it lacks power and doesn't have much room for luggage. As the car has aged, I've noticed that the engine has become a bit noisier, but other than that, I haven't had any problems. Thanks for listening!
