The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 2004 Toyota Corolla problems

The 2004 Toyota Corolla is known for its reliability, but there are a few common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most common issues is related to the engine, with some drivers experiencing strange noises and acceleration problems. These issues were reported in small numbers for each year, but they were still a concern for some drivers.

Another common problem with the 2004 Toyota Corolla is the quality of the exterior paint. Some owners have reported that the paint on their car has begun to chip or fade prematurely, which can be frustrating and unsightly. This issue is not unique to the 2004 model year, as similar complaints have been made about other Corollas from the same time period.

The check engine light is another common issue that has been reported by owners of the 2004 Toyota Corolla. This light can come on for a variety of reasons, including problems with the engine, transmission, or emissions system. While it is not uncommon for the check engine light to come on at some point in a car's life, it can be a source of frustration for drivers who are unsure of what is causing the problem.

In addition to these issues, there have been reports of premature rust on the 2004 Toyota Corolla, particularly in the struts. This can be a serious problem, as it can affect the car's handling and safety. However, incidents of premature rust are relatively rare, and most Corollas from this time period have held up well over the years.

Overall, the 2004 Toyota Corolla is a reliable and low-maintenance car that is fun to drive and priced to move. While there are a few common problems that have been reported by owners, these issues are generally not serious and can be easily addressed with regular maintenance and repairs.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-19
  • VIN: 2T1KR32E84C
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: This safety problem pertains to all vehicles sold in the U.S., not only my make and model. I was horrified to learn that the crash ratings are inaccurate for most women and all short people, because they were developed only for average sized men. It should be no surprise that when collisions occur, more women than men are seriously injured. More women than men are injured when air bags deploy. More women than men are injured by their shoulder belts. I am afraid to purchase a new car, because the crash ratings that I have relied on in the past are unreliable for me as a short woman. I am very disappointed that my own government, to which I pay taxes, has been so misleading to the public on important safety issues. Please develop and implement collision ratings for various height groups. In the meantime, please include notices with crash ratings that explain which height ranges the ratings are most accurate for.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
  • VIN: 2T1KY32E64C
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I have been unable to have my dealer repair the recalls on this car despite repeated times calling up Toyota and dealing with Larry H Miller Toyota dealership. They refuse to give me a replacement car while they fix it and won't say how long it will take. I also discovered that there are no child seat anchors in the back. I was told this is unlawful given the date of this car's manufacture. I hope NHTSA will help force Toyota to fix these recalls and install car seat anchors and give em a replacement vehicle to drive to work and for children while they fix it.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-10
  • VIN: 2T1KR32E74C
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: A 205/55/R16 tire exploded when I was driving on the freeway at 9:15 am. I had driven less than 3 miles. The tire that exploded had less than 16,000 miles. I didn't run over an object or I would have also punctured my front tire too. At the time of the explosion I didn't know what happened, but heard a loud noise that I thought was from a car next to me. Once both cars moved ahead of me, I realized the loud noise was coming from under my car. I then was able to pull to the side of the freeway. Once I pulled over I saw the tire had exploded. I took photos of the tire and took both parts to the tire shop where my tires are under warranty. I had inspected my tires the prior Monday, two days prior and didn't see an issue with any of the tires. I've never had a tire blowout before. The tire shop threw the tire away even though I asked for a report of the incident to appropriate entities. The tire shop told me the tire was under inflated or that I hit a road hazard but couldn't prove that's what caused the explosion. Also the tire shop did not show me where a road hazard penetrated the tire. In the past if a tire had run over an object this tire shop would show me the object. I have 3 of the same tires on my car which I don't trust because my tire exploded without warning.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-09
  • VIN: 1NXBR32E64Z
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I have repaired all the safety recalls on my 2004 Toyota Corolla S. However, I just had another warning signal for the seatbelt/airbag today. Since this has been a recall previously, can I have the dealer look at the car and repair again? I wouldn't think the airbags/seatbelt warning would come back so fast after being repaired for the recall. Please advise. Thank you.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-19
  • VIN: 2T1kr32e14c
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My daughter was driving as usual when she went to apply the brakes about 5 car lengths back and the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably despite braking. Her foot was not on the accelerator, she does not have floor mats that would cause anything to hit the accelerator. This has happened on 5-6 occasions which almost resulted in an accident. She barely got stopped mere inches away from the car in front of her despite braking earlier than normal because she encountered this once already during her trip. No check engine codes, the brakes are good, the car idles high. That is really it. This is a serious issue that seemingly cannot be diagnosed. After doing research to see what the problem may be, I have seen countless complaints of a similar nature. My daughters life is invaluable. This needs to be addressed.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-01-21
  • VIN: 2T1LR32E34C
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I JUST FOUND OUT THAT THE REAR SUSPENSION CROSS-MEMBER (PART # 51206-12190) IN MY 2004 TOYOTA MATRIX IS ABOUT TO FAIL DUE TO RUST. WHILE DOING SOMETHING ELSE MY MECHANIC HAPPENED TO NOTICE THE ISSUE. HE SHOWED ME THE PROBLEM AND SAID IT WOULD BE DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THE CAR. THE CAR HAS LOW MILEAGE FOR BEING 16 YEARS OLD (ABOUT 8K A YEAR). THIS CAR WAS BUILT IN CANADA AND SOLD IN NEW YORK STATE SO IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO TAKE MANY YEARS OF WET/WINTER ROAD CONDITIONS. IF MY CAR HAD 16K MILES PER YEAR IT WOULD ONLY BE 8 YEARS OLD. SHOULD A PART THAT HOLDS THE DIFFERENTIAL UP (NOT LET IT DROP TO THE ROAD) GO BAD IN EVEN 20 YEARS ON THE ROAD? I ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BY CHANCE. OTHERWISE I COULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND POSSIBLY HAD A FATAL ACCIDENT DUE TO THE REAR PARTS OF THE DRIVE TRAIN DROPPING TO THE ROAD. THE CAR LOOKS FINE OTHERWISE. SO HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE WHO OWN THE SAME CAR THAT IS THE SAME AGE, OR NEWER OR A BIT OLDER, HAVE NO IDEA THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS? IF EVEN ONE OWNER OF THIS CAR HAS AN ACCIDENT CAUSED BY THIS PROBLEM AND IS HURT OR KILLED THAT WOULD BE VERY BAD! AND THAT PERSON COULD HAVE BEEN ME - BECAUSE THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL ISSUED INTENDED TO CHECK FOR THIS POTENTIAL FAILURE. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THEY TOLD ME I AM ON MY OWN, THAT THEY COULDN'T/WOULDN'T HELP ME. THE TWO PEOPLE I TALKED WITH NEVER SAID THAT THEY WOULD DO ANYTHING TO BE SURE OTHER TOYOTA MATRIX OWNERS WERE INFORMED ABOUT THIS POSSIBLE RUST ISSUE.

These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, or replace the air bag assembly that includes an alternate inflator, free of charge. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. NOTE: This recall supersedes recall 14V-312 in its entirety.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla vehicles manufactured December 28, 2001, to May 2, 2004, 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla Matrix vehicles manufactured January 6, 2002, to April 29, 2004, 2003-2004 Avalon vehicles manufactured June 5, 2002, to December 20, 2004, and 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles manufactured January 18, 2002, to April 27, 2004. Due to electrical noise, a component in the air bag control module may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags or the seat belt pretensioners increases the risk of an injury or crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the air bag control module, free of charge. The recall began on August 24, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. GM issued an interim notification to owners on March 27, 2015. The recall began on August 24, 2015. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-620-7668. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 13V-029 and 14V-147. • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles and 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The supplemental restraint system (SRS) circuits are susceptible to internal shorting. The electrical short may create an abnormal current flow and increased heat which can damage the circuits. This could result in an inadvertent deployment of the front airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags or the seat belt pretensioners may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will re-notify their owners who have already had their vehicles repaired with a noise filter, but did not receive a new airbag control module, and General Motors will re-notify theirs. Dealers previously installed a supplemental harness containing an electrical filter between the airbag control module and its wire harness, free of charge. Dealers will replace the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on March 13, 2013. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for second notices. For more information, Toyota owners may call 1-800-331-4331 and Pontiac owners may call 1-800-620-7668.

Negative 2004 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Erwin Frami 2024-11-14

The 2004 Toyota Corolla S is an affordable car. Although, my belt and some other consumers have had their belt snap in half which is very dangerous. The overall design can be easily dented and scratched, and the smell of the eggs and the noise can be quite annoying. Unfortunately, my car is already getting lemon lawed. However, I believe that Toyota people can be more friendly like they used to be. They should treat you with respect and care about you, your money, and your car.

  2. Hudson Price 2024-09-09

I decided to replace my 93 4 cylinder Mustang with a 03 Toyota Corolla S. I was impressed with the fuel economy and safety ratings of the Corolla. Plus, I was tired of paying high insurance premiums for my Mustang, even though it was safe and didn't go very fast. After driving both cars, I found the Corolla to be quicker and more fun to drive, while also getting better mileage. So, I said goodbye to my beloved Mustang and made the switch to the Corolla.

  3. Beau D'Amore 2024-04-09

I confidently owned a 97 Geo Prizm before and made the decision to upgrade to an 04 Corolla. However, I did not thoroughly test drive the vehicle and encountered some issues. The steering wheel was too close to the dash and the seat/floor was awkwardly positioned, resulting in personal left foot problems that I have dubbed 'Toyota foot'. Additionally, there was a problem with a rotten egg smell while idling at a stop, which I need to inform passengers is a result of the car and not myself.

  4. Victor Beahan 2024-02-24

I purchased a car with 10k miles on it. Unfortunately, during the first week, a plastic piece inside broke without even touching it. However, the car was generally reliable and required minimal maintenance. Around 65k miles, it started to feel quite worn out, and at 74k miles, the transmission failed, which was surprising for a manual car. I have never had a transmission fail on any of my previous cars, which have been driven for over 150k miles without needing a replacement. Despite this, the gas mileage was good. The windows did rattle a little from 20k miles onwards. Overall, my experience with Toyota was a bit disappointing, but there were some positives to take away from it.

  5. Karson Jerde 2024-01-09

My family has been loyal to Toyota for as long as I can remember. We had a fantastic 1984 Corolla that lasted for over 200,000 miles. However, my 2004 Corolla has not been as reliable. With almost 100,000 miles on it, I have experienced more small problems than I can handle. I have had to replace the serpentine belt twice and the pulley system once. Unfortunately, the belt started squeaking again within a year of being replaced! Additionally, the lights on the gear shift are burnt out, and I've had to have the window pulley system replaced. While Toyota made the car more luxurious, they definitely skimped on the quality, and it feels cheap.

Positive 2004 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Giuseppe Brekke 2025-01-01

My first battery change was after 8 years. Other than a master fuse, no other repairs or replacements were ever needed. I consistently changed the oil on time, rotated the tires, exchanged fluids, and drove 110K miles in 10 years of ownership. This car had another 100-150K miles left in her. Unfortunately, an uninsured motorist who was distracted by texting slammed into me from behind at a red light, totaling the car. Despite the loss of this fantastic vehicle, I emerged without a scratch.

  2. Hipolito Watsica 2024-11-17

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your vehicle! It sounds like it's been a reliable companion for many years. It's understandable that you're starting to outgrow it, but it's great to know that it's served you so well. Thank you for sharing your story!

  3. Kenton Kerluke 2024-10-11

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in January 2004 and it has been a great investment. The only repair I've had to make was to the front brakes. It's a very dependable and comfortable car that also gets decent mileage (25-city; 35-highway). However, I do wish that Toyota would equip their cars with better OE tires than the Goodyear Integritys that came with the car. Unfortunately, they had to be replaced after only 20000 miles and they didn't provide very good traction.

  4. Diamond Hegmann 2024-10-01

I've put a lot of miles on this car and never had any issues with it. Other than oil changes, it has never needed service of any kind. You can definitely count on me to buy another Toyota--either another Corolla or a Lexus. It's an excellent car.

  5. Abel Jast 2024-08-27

I hope you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice. The steering is tight and the visibility is really good, which is always important. Plus, it's great that so many features come standard, like the AC, power door locks, CD player, and cup holders. I was considering an Echo myself, but after looking at all the options, I realized that a Corolla would be a better fit for me. It's really fun to drive and handles well in rainy, windy weather. And there's plenty of space inside, which is always a plus!
