Ford Explorer 2008 problems

ford logo

The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. As the first four-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the two-door Bronco II. Within the current Ford SUV range in North America, the Explorer is slotted between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition. As with the Ford Ranger, the Explorer derives its name from a trim package previously offered on the Ford F-Series pickup trucks.

The Explorer has been offered in multiple chassis and powertrain layouts. The first two generations were directly derived from the Ford Ranger, switching to a model-specific chassis for the third and fourth generations. The fifth generation was repackaged as a crossover SUV, adopting a variant of the Ford Taurus chassis architecture.

Alongside the five-door Explorer wagon, a three-door Explorer wagon was offered from 1991 to 2003, officially referred to as the Explorer Sport after 1999, serving as the direct replacement of the Bronco II; the 2001–2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a crew-cab pickup derived from the model line. For police use, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility has been derived from the fifth and sixth-generation Explorer to replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (and the later Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan). Through rebranding, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln have sold versions of the Explorer; Lincoln currently markets the sixth-generation model line as the Lincoln Aviator.

For the North American market, the first four generations of the Explorer were produced by Ford at its Louisville Assembly Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) and at its now-closed St. Louis Assembly Plant (Hazelwood, Missouri); the model line is currently produced at Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois).

In 2020, CNBC reported the Ford Explorer range as the best-selling SUV of all time in America.

Common Ford Explorer 2008 problems

The 2008 Ford Explorer has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to the transmission, broken visors, and spark plugs.

  • Broken Visors: Another widespread issue is broken visors in the cabin, which occur at around 40,000 miles. The mirrors and mirror covers fall off the visors, and replacing them with a new assembly costs about $200.
  • Broken Spark Plugs: Spark plugs breaking and getting stuck in the engine is a common problem with all V8 Fords from 2008. Extracting and replacing the spark plugs fixes the problem, but costs about $550. This issue doesn't affect V6 models, but the V8 offers more power.
  • Transmission Cooler Line: There are four recalls for the 2008 Ford Explorer, with the most serious being for the transmission cooler line, which can cause damage to the transmission if it fails.
  • Additional Issues: Other common problems include rear wheel drive, front axle connection when the rear wheels slip, and permanent all-wheel drive mode. After 150,000 to 200,000 kilometers, rear wheel seals can leak, chain stretching in the transfer case and wear of the sprockets occur, and the CV joint of the front propeller shaft can fail. After 200,000 kilometers, the drive shaft crosses may require replacement. The upper ball joint wears out at a distance of 120,000 to 180,000 kilometers, and the bottom support tends to last longer. Silent blocks of levers, shock absorbers, and wheel bearings have a similar resource of 150,000 to 200,000 kilometers. The body is not prone to corrosion, but on older copies, bugs appear at the bottom of the doors and in the area of the rear wheel arches. The rear wiper Drive mechanism can turn sour, and the backlight of the instrument panel and radio can burn out. The heater T often begins to leak, and the plastic case cracks six to ten years. The pipes of the rear circuit of the air conditioning system are almost guaranteed to rot.

In summary, the 2008 Ford Explorer has several common problems, primarily related to the transmission, broken visors, and spark plugs. Regular maintenance and inspections can help mitigate these issues, but it's essential to be aware of these potential problems when purchasing or owning a 2008 Ford Explorer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
  • VIN: 1FMEU63EX8U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Report #1 - My grandma brought this 08' Explorer back in 2014, and after she passed, my mom drove it for the next 2 years. It started having general maintenance issues, then the cats were stolen, but then, one night my mother was coming home from a relative's house, when she was trying to keep up with the flow of traffic on [XXX] , and she noticed that the vehicle was not accelerating at all and the vehicle stalled out. She had it towed home and it sat on the streetside for some time. After digging through the internet, I figured that Ford designed the throttle-body wiring to settle next to the cooling hoses, and after time, the wires rot from the hot temperatures of the hoses and crack/snap causing the vehicle to either stall, or possibly have unintended acceleration. Ford never recalled this issue! Also, it had a massive coolant leak, from which was believed to be the cheap plastic T-Stat housings that Ford never recalled, and to top it all off: the right rear turn-indicator failed from the faulty wiring harnesses... As a result, we ended up having it scrapped/junked. It was sad to see her go, but obviously Ford doesn't care about their customers safety and will find any loophole to avoid recalling a vehicle... Ford needs to get their stuff together or they need to be shut down!... INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1FMEU73E68U
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The wiring harness going into the back of what I believe is the throttle position sensor has a 180° turn in the wiring in a very short distance. There are four wires involved in that portion of the wiring harness. The wiring is also next to the hot, cooling system hoses coming out of the firewall. These factors caused the wiring to crack prematurely creating surges in the idle and the vehicle speed to be uncontrollable due to shorts/arcing in the electrical wiring. An extremely dangerous situation. My daughter ran into a bullard because she started the vehicle, put it in drive, and it took off on her. Vehicle would drive at 20 to 25 miles per hour on its own without stepping on the gas pedal. After two or three attempts, I was able to satisfactorily fix the wiring. Please note that the attached pictures do not show the original condition of the wiring. I attempted to use liquid electrical tape on one of my first attempts but that soon cracked as well. You will see that in one of the photos. I may have original pictures of the electrical wiring on my desktop computer and will gladly submit those at a later time if I can find them. This failure in the wiring should be easy to identify in any 2008 Ford Explorer.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-29
  • VIN: 1FMEU73E68U
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE CAR STOPS ACCELERATING. THE WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON BUT THE ENGINE IS STILL RUNNING BUT WHEN PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, IT WILL NOT ACCELERATE. THE OPERATOR CAN STOP THE CAR AND TURN IT OFF AND BACK ON AND THIS SEEMS TO CLEAR THE FAULT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT STOPS IN TRAFFIC OR IN A TURN AND THIS CREATES A SAFETY HAZARD FOR THE OPERATOR. THE CODE DIRECTS ME TO REPLACE/REPAIR THE THROTTLE BODY. THIS HAS BEEN REPLACED ALONG WITH THE TPS AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. THERE SHOULD BE A FIX FOR THIS AS I HAVE READ SEVERAL COMPLAINTS IN REGARDS TO THIS AND THE OBVIOUS SAFETY RISK FACTOR ASSOCIATED WITH IT. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF THERE IS SOFTWARE CHANGE THAT CAN BE MADE TO THE CAR SO THAT IT WON'T ALLOW THE CAR TO SHUTDOWN LIKE THIS IF IT GETS A FAULT OR PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY.
