2019 Ford Transit connect problems

ford logo

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.

The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.

The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: NM0LS7F23K1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I am writing to report a serious safety concern with my 2019 Ford Transit Connect. The front right brakes are consistently gripping excessively, which generates significant heat and smoke. Despite replacing the rotor, calipers, and brake pads, the problem persists. After conducting a quick online search, I discovered that this issue appears to be common among Transit Connect owners. Some people are suggesting that it's an ABS Module issue, though I can't say definitively. This ongoing problem poses an extreme safety risk, not only due to potential driving hazards but also due to the possibility of a fire given the excessive heat being produced. I urge you to investigate this matter to ensure the safety of those who rely on this vehicle and to prevent any potential accidents or injuries related to this defect.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-09
  • VIN: NM0GE9F29K1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Passenger side, rear brake, complete lock-up while driving. no warning, no ABS light warning My wife and grandchild were traveling at about 30 mph when the car started to "wheel hop". They did maintain control of the car due to their low speed, then the front driver side wheel locked up and she skidded but made it home home and into the driveway. The collision light flashed once and then turned to a red light saying Impact or collision impact. There was however no impact. They were both somewhat shaken and turned the car off. I (her husband) examined and reworked the brake calipers thinking this might be the problem. Both 2 wheels were still locked up tight. So, we took off the flex lines and one section of the rear brake and line cleaned and ran air first, the DOT 4 brake fluid both ways to assure there was no obstruction in the brake lines. After all of this, the Brakes were still locked up tight. I have since learned that the issue is the Ford ABS hydraulic control unit. Which ford sells for just under $1000. There are many other Ford vehicles that have the same problem (likely the same ABS module) and Ford is apparently aware but does nothing to correct this dangerous product defect. My concern it that the vehicle becomes uncontrollable and someone is going to be killed due to the lack of control when this ABS module failure occurs.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-02
  • VIN: NM0LE7E22K1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission needs replaced at 88,900 miles on a 2019 Ford Transit Connect. I have reached out to Ford and they will NOT do anything except to tell me I should have it repaired/replaced at a Ford authorized dealer so that the parts are under warranty. I use this compact cargo van for my business and am being for to put unnecessary wear and tear and miles on my personal vehicle for work. The transmission started to fail and the vehicle went into "limp" mode. The vehicle started to shift gears erratically, had a loss of power, slipping gears, and hard upshift and down shift. This happened all within a matter of 5 miles. Thankfully, I was able to get the vehicle back home and didn't loose control or have a catastrophic loss. The Ford dealer also found a Diagnostic Trouble Code for the Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor and when the vehicle gear selector was placed in "drive" the vehicle would move in reverse and vise versa. Ford's answer to this problem is "I am always willing to consider individual requests for assistance beyond the warranty period. I hope you understand; however, that I must place limits on the post-warranty adjustment policy. Regrettably, I have to advise you that your vehicle is beyond those limits. As such, I am unable to assist with repair costs; however, I encourage you to have the repair performed at your Ford dealership as parts come with a warranty." The factory powertrain warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles. This vehicle is a 2019 with 88,900 miles. I believe that the reasonable expectation of the lifespan of a transmission is 150,000 mile at a minimum for any vehicle. There are several recalls on the transmission as well as a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 22-2281) published showing how to fix the problem when it happens. Ford has not publicly admitted that there is a problem, but in my mind, if a problem has warranted the you publish a TSB on how to fix the problem then you are admitting that there is a problem.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
  • VIN: NM0LS7E22K1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Brakes started dragging. I noticed that sometimes they would stick a bit when i was trying to move after stopping somewhere. Once I got on the highway, just after I hit 65 MPH, the brakes came on. The car was slowed down to about 30MPH. I had to pull over on a very small shoulder on a busy highway. There were no lights or warning of any kind. I shut the vehicle off and restarted it. I was able to make it to the next exit. Albeit at a reduced speed. The brakes were still dragging. I was not able to make it to a dealer but did make it to a nearby Firestone shop. It was determined that the vehicle needed the entire brake system replaced, as the brakes were badly locked up. the repairs were $2300. However during my test drive 2 of the brakes were once again dragging and the brakes came on again at 65 MPH. Vehicle was taken to the local Ford dealership where it was determined that the ABS hydraulic pump was frozen and needed replacement. Repairs were another $2000. Vehicle has just over 25,000 miles and is 2 months past the warranty so there was no help on the repairs. If I had been a few miles further down the highway when the brakes came on it likely would have resulted in a bad accident.

  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the start/stop accumulator, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S49.

Negative 2019 Ford Transit connect car reviews

The backup camera is currently experiencing issues with clarity and functionality, and the reverse occasionally fails to engage. Despite these challenges, I have enjoyed my 2019 van since purchasing it with zero miles a few months ago. However, I am considering trading it in soon to avoid potential future problems.

I purchased this vehicle brand new in 2019. Unfortunately, the rear camera stopped working after just two weeks. Additionally, the radio would lose all presets once a month. After two months, the car stopped downshifting when going uphill, and I had to manually shift down. The engine light would come on and indicate that the exhaust gas was not right. I took it to Ford and was charged $180.00, but they told me that nothing was wrong with it and to just keep driving it. I continued to experience these issues for two years, and every time I took it in for service, I complained. However, I was told that if I wanted them to look at it again, I would have to leave it with them for 2-3 months before they could even take a look. Eventually, the transmission stopped going in reverse and started shifting up and down erratically. I took it back to Ford, and after 2 months, they told me that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. They rebuilt it 5 times, then put in a new transmission. However, within a week, the instrument cluster started flashing on and off with a beeping noise every 30 seconds. The engine light still comes on, the radio loses presets every half hour, and there is a clunking noise coming from under the hood. The key fob doesn't work, and the backup camera is still not functioning. They denied the lemon law, and finally, after 9 months, they gave me a rental truck for 10 days. I believe that something is seriously wrong with this vehicle, and I may need to get a lawyer involved.

This vehicle can be a bit challenging to drive, especially on the highway. The transmission can feel a bit sluggish at times, but with some practice, it can be managed. One thing to note is that the AC turns off when you cut the vehicle off, so you may need to switch it off and on again to get it to blow. The windshield is quite large, which can be a bit overwhelming when facing the sun, but the sun visors do help to some extent. Overall, I understand that this vehicle may not be everyone's cup of tea, but with some adjustments, it can be a decent ride.

My company has provided me with this vehicle, but I would not recommend getting the vinyl seats. Regardless of which seats you choose, if you're 5'11

  5. Dax Rempel 2024-02-23

Overall, this vehicle has performed below expectations. However, the fuel economy is particularly disappointing.

Positive 2019 Ford Transit connect car reviews

  1. Dale Block 2024-08-22

This car gets great gas mileage, with 20 miles per gallon around town and 28 miles per gallon on the highway. It also has plenty of seating and cargo space, as well as ample headroom. Despite being a 4-cylinder, it has a peppy performance.

That's great to hear! We always strive to exceed expectations.

I've owned this van for 5 years now and it has been a great ride. Recently, it was in a dealership for the first time due to a 'shift cable bushing' recall replacement, which only took them 30 minutes. Although I have 3 vehicles, including a Toyota truck and a Lexus GS350, I find myself driving the van the most because it's just so much fun to drive. It's very nimble with quick steering, and although it's a 4 banger, it still boogies when you keep your foot in it. I've driven it consistently at 80-85 mph on freeways here in NorCal and it has no issues keeping up. Admittedly, it can be a bit noisy, especially since I'm about half deaf from playing in rock bands most of my life. Speaking of which, I'm still playing in rock bands at 68 years old! Overall, the van has been stellar for me and I have no real complaints. In fact, I would pay big money for a turbo or supercharger if someone made one. That would be one insane ride!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2018 Transit Connect long wheel base cargo van. As a courier, I need a van that can provide me with room, fuel efficiency, comfort, and power, and this van has exceeded my expectations in every way. I've driven over 230,000 miles in less than 3 years and have not had a single problem with it. Of course, I do keep up with scheduled maintenance and use only full synthetic oil. Even when fully loaded to its 1600 lb capacity, it pulls mountains at 65 mph and could go even faster if I pushed it. I usually get anywhere from 27.5 to 31 mpg, and even higher on long freeway trips. While I have noticed a small drop off in performance now that it has so many miles, it's still a great van. If all goes well, I'll have over 300,000 miles on it by the end of this year!
