2019 Mini Clubman problems

mini logo

The Mini Clubman is a subcompact executive car engineered and manufactured by German automaker BMW and sold under the Mini marque. The first-generation Clubman was introduced in 2007, as a variant of the Mini Hatch (Hardtop in the US). A commercial version called Clubvan was added to the range in 2012. The current second-generation model has been in production since 2015 and available with front- and all-wheel drive.

History

The use of the name "Clubman" is a departure from Mini tradition. "Clubman" was originally the name given to the 1970s facelift of the classic Mini, which mostly resulted in a squared-off front end, whereas the classic Mini estates had traditionally been named "Traveller" or "Countryman". However, BMW did not initially purchase the rights to use those names, and so decided to call its larger-variant "Clubman", a name which it did own rights to.

Sketches of a new estate version of the Mini were shown at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, and a rendering of the estate concept (internally named EXT), wore the Clubman name on the licence plate. The Clubman started out in development based on the first generation Mini Hatch (R50) before changing to the second gen Hatch (R56).

Common 2019 Mini Clubman problems

The Mini Clubman, produced by Mini, has been a popular choice for those seeking a stylish and practical estate car. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Mini Clubman, based on complaints from owners.

  • Bodywork issues: Bodywork problems have been the main trouble spot for the Mini Clubman, affecting 11% of cars. These issues include scuffs, scrapes, and coolant leaks, which can lead to more serious problems if not addressed promptly. Check the car's extremities, radiator supports, and main coolant hose for any signs of damage.
  • Rough engine idle and increased fuel consumption: If your Mini Clubman's engine is idling roughly and you're using more fuel than usual, it's likely that you haven't been topping up your oil regularly enough. This can lead to variable valve timing (VVT) issues. Try replacing the solenoid for the VVT first, as this is a relatively easy job. If that doesn't resolve the issue, you may need to replace the VVT actuator.
  • Overheating engine: The Mini Clubman's low ground clearance makes it prone to damage from kerbs, which can result in a coolant leak and rapid engine overheating. Check the radiator supports and main coolant hose for any signs of damage if your engine has started to overheat quickly.
  • Loss of rear parking alert: The rear parking sensor is a common issue for the Clubman, and there doesn't seem to be any way to resolve it other than installing a new sensor. This is an easy DIY job, and new sensors are readily available.
  • AC failure: The air conditioning unit on the Clubman is prone to premature wear, particularly the AC fan. If your AC has stopped working or is slow to switch from hot to cool, replacing the AC fan may resolve the issue.
  • Cracked windscreen: The Mini Clubman is particularly prone to windscreen chips, which can lead to cracks and eventually an MOT failure. If you notice any chips or cracks, it's advisable to address them promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Turbocharger power loss and overall performance drop: Excessive carbon build-up can cause serious damage to the oil pump, pickup pipe, and turbocharger. If you experience a complete loss of turbocharger power and a general drop in overall performance, you may need to replace these parts with the modified version.
  • High oil pressure and engine rumbling: The crankshaft bearings on the Clubman estate are particularly susceptible to premature wear, which can lead to high oil pressure and an odd rumbling sound when accelerating. If you notice these symptoms, it's advisable to replace the crankshaft bearings as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

In summary, the Mini Clubman has several common problems that owners should be aware of. These include engine crankshaft bearing wear, bodywork issues, rough engine idle, overheating engine, loss of rear parking alert, AC failure, cracked windscreen, turbocharger power loss, and high oil pressure. If you're considering a Mini Clubman, it's advisable to check for these issues and address them promptly to ensure a safe and reliable driving experience.

2019 Mini Clubman engine

What is the problem with the MINI Clubman?

The 1.5-litre petrol engine has been subject to a recall to deal with excessive crankshaft bearing wear; this problem is serious and could lead to considerable engine damage if not remedied. It's therefore worth checking with your local dealership whether the car you've got your eye on is affected.

Why is the MINI Clubman being discontinued?

The Countryman JCW has more power in its new generation but lost a substantial amount of torque while gaining weight stunting its performance a bit. Why is MINI killing the Clubman? It's unfortunately due to sales. In a world that can't get enough of small crossovers, the wagon-like Clubman is getting squeezed out.

What is the most common problem with Mini Cooper?

Issue #1: Engine Overheating in Mini Cooper S (2007-2010)

Oil cooler leaks have also been reported on some vehicles. These problems cause the engine to gradually overheat, leading to coolant loss and severe damage if left unchecked. Head gasket failure is a common result of the engine overheating in the R56 Cooper S.

How long do MINI Clubmans last?

154,000mi

What is Mini Clubman lifespan? The estimated lifespan of a Mini Clubman is 154,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-28
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WMWLU1C59K2
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: January 28, 2024 I had a car accident and the air bags on my left side never deployed. The other vehicle crashed into the right side (passenger side) of my 2019 mini clubman which caused my 2019 mini clubman to spin around and hit another car on my left rear bumper. As a result, I suffered a fractured rib and a brain hemorrhage.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-03
  • VIN: WMWLU1C5XK2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: My Mini Clubman All4, despite having clocked in a mere 33,000 miles in the past four years, has been plagued with issues concerning its air conditioning system. Initially, I sought assistance from the Mini of Morristown dealership in Morristown, NJ, where my vehicle has been serviced over the years. However, their service proved to be unsatisfactory. Despite reassurances that they had recharged the system and that there were no inherent issues, the problem persisted. Upon contacting them again, I was informed that further diagnostics would be subject to additional charges. Disconcerted, I reached out to Mini's customer service team, only to be met with a reaffirmation that there was little they could do. With no resolution in sight, I sought help from a local independent mechanic, who quickly identified the root cause - a compressor line rubbing against other components, leading to leakage – PART # F56 6453 9209722-04. This diagnosis and the ability to swiftly rectify it contrasts starkly with the inability of the authorized dealership to provide effective solutions. This issue may be indicative of a design flaw requiring a recall to prevent further mishaps that could endanger Mini owners. You are welcome to contact Mini of Morristown, NJ, for all service records associated with this issue. I urge you to take immediate action and rectify this situation, not just for my sake but for the sake of all Mini customers. I HAVE THE PART AND CAN SHIP IT. I ALREADY PROVIDED PICTURES OF THE WEAR IN MY EMAIL. The summer heat with the AC not working is surely a hazard. The issue was confirmed by the independent service center that diagnosed and fixed the problem. The manufacturer has been indifferent thus far. It is only now that I have raised a concern with the company's CEO's office. No warning lamps or messages appeared. The Mini team has been incompetent in addressing the issue.

The contact stated while driving at 45 MPH with her 3 years old son in a car seat located in the rear seats. and coming to a stop, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond and vibrated while emitting an abnormal ticking sound. As a result, the vehicle crashed into the trailer hitch of the occupied vehicle before her. There was no warning light illuminated. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained severe whiplash, memory loss, fatigue, headaches, pain and bruises on the chest. The contact had been seeking medical assistance and was scheduled for an MRI. The contact's son did not sustain any injuries. The contact stated that the other driver did not sustain any injuries and was able to continue driving. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard where it was totaled. A police report was filed. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. Negative 2019 Mini Clubman car reviews

  1. Simeon Hermann 2024-11-27

I have been leasing cars for over 15 years now and I have noticed that some manufacturers are equipping their cars with components that require replacement within the initial lease period. For instance, when I leased a Mercedes Benz GLK 350, I had to replace the tires after just 25K miles. Currently, I am leasing a Mini Cooper Clubman S All-4 with 23K miles and it needs front brakes rotors and wear sensors (estimated at $800+ at the dealer). It also seems like I will need new tires soon to make it to the end of my lease. As someone who leases cars to avoid unexpected expenses, this is quite concerning. In the past, I have owned multiple vehicles that were 4+ years old and had 40K+ miles before needing new tires or brakes. It appears that some manufacturers are equipping new vehicles with substandard performing parts and tires, which is a negative trend.

The Clubman was redesigned for 2016. Although it's a nice car, it's unfortunate that one of the few perks of the previous model, fuel efficiency, is not as prominently displayed on the miniusa website. The new engine (3 cylinder!) has resulted in a lower MPG of 23 in the city, which is comparable to some larger sport utility vehicles, but still lower than the previous model. Despite this, as someone who has owned three MINI's, I can say that I am not a MINI basher. While there are other vehicles that offer more for less money, the Clubman still has its unique benefits, such as its distinctive appearance and easy-to-spot location in a parking lot. It's worth noting that we have an ALL4 base model, which is not listed among the choices here.

Positive 2019 Mini Clubman car reviews

  1. Irwin Hilpert 2025-01-01

The 2018 Mini Cooper Clubman S is an amazing small car that I am proud to own. I recently traded in my 2017 Subaru Impreza Premium for a fully loaded Clubman S automatic in Dynamic Red Metallic and I couldn't be happier. The differences between the two cars are stark, and I am thrilled with the turbo 2.0 litre engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. I opted for a fully loaded car this time around, as I was tired of having minimal amenities in my old Subaru. I am so glad I did, as I now enjoy driving my car so much more. The ride is much more comfortable than the first generation Mini Cooper S I test drove years ago, which was too harsh for my liking. The larger Mini Cooper Clubman S is perfect for daily living, commuting, and shopping, and I find it just as refined as the 3 series BMW. I highly recommend the Mini Cooper Clubman S as a great all-around vehicle that is also reliable.

This little car is fantastic! I absolutely love it. I was pleasantly surprised by its spacious interior and excellent handling.

  3. Irving Shields 2024-09-22

Before you consider purchasing a Mini Cooper, it's important to note that underneath the quirky exterior lies a BMW! Additionally, these cars are not cheap, but they are compact upscale small cars. They are extremely fun to drive, quick, and very nimble!

  4. Thurman Strosin 2024-09-19

This is the best car I have ever owned! I've had a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and RAV4, and a Jeep Cherokee in the past. My Mini is so much fun to drive, it has so many exciting features, and it is incredibly comfortable!

  5. Jalon Boehm 2024-07-26

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the 2018 Clubman. In my experience, it handles more like a Mini than my previous 2015 Countryman did. While it's not quite like our 2013 Mini 2 door, it's not far off. I've found that the ride is vastly better than any Mini I've owned, and the interior is great. Plus, the little 3 cylinder turbo is surprisingly good due to its torque. I definitely miss the brute power of the 4 cylinder turbo in my Countryman S, but the Clubman with the 3 cylinder doesn't give you any torque steer problems you get in the S Models. It's actually better on fuel than the expected ratings, and I see slightly over 34 mpg routinely, even at FL highway speeds (aka Fast!). The only downside compared to the Countryman is that the rear seat is stationary, so it doesn't slide back and forth to give extra leg room and has no recline adjustment. That said, it really doesn't need the slide option since rear leg room is pretty impressive for a small car, but the reclining option would be nice. Overall, I think it's a great little car that does a lot of things well. Thanks for reading!
