2001 Dodge Stratus problems

The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.

The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.

After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

Common 2001 Dodge Stratus problems

The Dodge Stratus, produced between 1995 and 2006, is known to have several common problems, particularly in the 2001-2006 models. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Transmission Problems: Transmission problems are another common issue in the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. This can include symptoms like slipping, rough shifting, or failure to engage, which may indicate a problem with the transmission. In some cases, replacing the transmission fluid and filter may resolve the issue. However, if the problem persists, it may be necessary to repair or replace damaged transmission components.
  • Fuel System Issues: Fuel system problems, such as difficulty starting or poor acceleration, can also be a concern with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. Replacing the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, or fuel injectors may be necessary to resolve these issues. Regularly maintaining the fuel system with proper fuel quality and fuel additives can help prevent issues from occurring.
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the alternator, battery, or wiring, can also occur with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. Checking wiring and connections for damage or corrosion and replacing any damaged or worn electrical components can help prevent issues from occurring.
  • Suspension Problems: Suspension problems can also be a concern with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. This can include issues such as a bumpy ride, uneven tire wear, or noise when going over bumps. Worn or damaged suspension components such as struts or sway bar links may need to be replaced as needed. Regularly maintaining proper tire pressure and alignment can also help reduce stress on the suspension system.

For earlier models, such as the 1995-2000 Dodge Stratus, common issues include oil leaks, transmission problems, fuel system issues, electrical problems, and suspension problems.

Regular maintenance and tune-ups, as well as addressing issues promptly, can help prevent these problems from occurring or worsening in both the 1995-2000 and 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus models.

Negative 2001 Dodge Stratus car reviews

The 2001 Stratus 4Dr. SE Sedan (4cyl) is a great car! Although it's a little louder than I'd prefer, it's still a really nice vehicle. The interior is well laid out and the controls are easy to read and access. The front seats are really comfortable and the 4 cylinder has decent power and acceleration.

  2. Benny Beer 2024-08-28

The car is great, but unfortunately, the engine is a bit of a letdown with the 2.7 being quite problematic.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe. I have to say, it was a blast to drive and I received compliments on it even though it was an '01 model. Unfortunately, after trading it in with 80K miles, I did experience some issues with the transmission and the interior was starting to show some wear and tear. It was a bit disappointing because I really tried my best to keep it in good condition, but it just wasn't holding up. Despite that, the Eclipse 3.0 200hp v6 provided great performance and made for a fun ride. Although, I did find it a bit challenging to drive in the winter, even with front-wheel drive and decent tires. Thanks for listening to my story!

This car is great, but unfortunately its resale value is not. Despite owning it since new for three years and financing it for six, I currently owe $5000 more than its resale value. This is unacceptable and should not be the case.

  5. Ubaldo Murazik 2024-07-25

Despite the initial issues I faced with my company-leased Dodge Stratus due to high highway miles, I am confident in my decision to purchase the factory and extended warranty. I have had to replace the A/C and heating control module three times, and the chrome lettering on the sides has peeled off, but I am impressed with the power of the 4-cylinder engine. However, I am disappointed with the gas mileage, which is similar to my previous 6-cylinder Lumina. I have a theory about first model year vehicles and their potential for more problems, which was supported by a recent issue of Consumer Reports.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new back in '01 and it's been great! Of course, after 8 years, I've had to start spending some money on repairs here and there, but nothing that's not normal wear and tear. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and I hope you are too!

  2. Earl Flatley 2024-10-06

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it when it was a year old and overall it's been great. However, I've had a bit of trouble with the driver's power window. It went bad two years after I bought the car and unfortunately, I've had to get it fixed a few times since then. It's been a bit frustrating, but I'm hopeful that it will be resolved soon. Right now, I'm not using the window because I want to make sure it's working properly. Thanks for listening!

  3. Dameon King 2024-10-05

I bought this car because I needed something reliable, economical, yet not too 'corny' looking, and I have not been disappointed in any aspect. I do a lot of driving and I plan to trade the one I have for a 2002. I have not a single bad word to say about it. When I was broadsided, the car was strong enough that I came out with nothing more than a bruised knee. I would recommend one to anybody, and I already am responsible for someone else buying one. I absolutely love it!

  4. Wiley Larson 2024-08-25

I bought the Stratus barely used and overall it hasn't been a bad car. Although I have not had a lot of major problems under the hood, the air conditioning has been a constant issue since about 60,000 miles. It is frustrating that it is repaired and then goes out again soon after. This last time, I took the car to 3 reliable/well known mechanics in the Chicago area who were all unable to determine the cause of the problem. I have come across many others with dodge vehicles who have reported the exact same problem with AC and have also had difficulty getting it repaired. I hope this issue can be resolved soon, as it is very inconvenient not to have air constantly.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Stratus SE 4cy that I bought a little over a month ago. So far, I'm really happy with it! I'm getting about 28mpg, even with mixed driving from highway and city. The only issue I've had is that about a week after I bought the car, the engine light came on and they haven't been able to find the problem yet. But, despite that, the car still runs great!
