2003 Nissan Altima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.

The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.

The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Common 2003 Nissan Altima problems

The 2003 Nissan Altima has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most prevalent issues is related to engine and engine cooling, with 567 complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

One of the specific engine problems is related to the cam sensor, which can cause a no-start condition in the Altima. If the car has a distributor, the cam sensor is located inside it. If oil gets into this module, it can cause misfiring or prevent the car from starting at all. This issue is often caused by a valve cover leak, which would need to be fixed along with replacing the distributor

Another common problem with the 2003 Nissan Altima is related to body rust, particularly in colder states where road salt is used extensively. This can lead to significant structural issues, and it is recommended that owners in these regions invest in anti-rust coating to protect their vehicles.

The 2003 Altima has had 10 recalls filed with the NHTSA, which is roughly average for a car of this age. These recalls cover various components, including fuel systems, brakes, transmission, accelerator/throttle, exhaust/emission, engine, electrical system, airbags, and seat belts.

In terms of reliability, the 2003 Nissan Altima has a mixed record. Consumer Reports praises the refined transmission, agile handling, and quiet cabin, but criticizes the cheap interior plastics. Kelley Blue Book users appreciate the car's fuel efficiency and affordability, but some have reported issues with body rust and engine power loss. Edmunds praises the "sports car power" of the V6 engine but also notes the cheap interior plastics and the lack of stability control as drawbacks.

In conclusion, while the 2003 Nissan Altima has some common problems related to engine and engine cooling, body rust, and recalls, it also has some positive aspects, such as its refined transmission, agile handling, and quiet cabin. As with any car, regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address potential issues before they become major problems.

  • VIN: 1N4AL11D03C
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Engine will not start. If I get the engine to start the car may act as if it wants to cut off in traffic. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Engine may stop while in traffic possibly resulting in someone hitting me in traffic. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No the dealership service department are refusing to service or even inspect my car. At first he lied like there wasn’t a recall. Now because we are in MS he is refusing to provide service because we are not in a cold state. I called Nissan to verify this information prior to speaking with the dealership and Nissan specifically stated that for my VIN there is an open campaign for a fuel pump screen. Then they were the ones who referred me to the nearest dealership which is Gray Daniels Nissan North in Jackson. MS.

IF THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL IS NOT CHECKED ON A PERIODIC BASIS AND DROPS BELOW THE LOW LEVEL, AND THE DRIVER CONTINUES TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE IGNORING NOTICEABLE ENGINE NOISE, ENGINE DAMAGE MAY OCCUR WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. THE PRE-CATALYST WILL BE TESTED TO ENSURE IT IS WORKING PROPERLY AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND INSIDE THE PRE-CATALYST, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.

Negative 2003 Nissan Altima car reviews

I have been a Nissan fan for a long time, but unfortunately, my experience with my 03 Altima has not been great. While it is a fun and peppy car to drive (especially with the manual transmission), I have had a number of issues with it starting in different weather conditions. It has been in the shop 7 times for this issue alone. Additionally, the sub-frame corroded and had to be replaced, which has caused some loose bolt noises. There have also been some squeaks, rattles, and shimmy, as well as some outside noise (even with new tires). Safety is a top priority for me, and I don't feel as safe driving it as I would like. Lastly, it is unfortunately quite easy to break into. I hope this information is helpful!

I am extremely disappointed with this car. Despite paying top dollar for it and taking very good care of it by following the maintenance schedule, I had to frequently pay for costly repairs. After being informed of the need to replace the catalytic converter, rack and pinion, and alignment, as well as additional suggestions such as fuel injection service and engine oil flush, which would have cost me around $3,000, I decided to purchase a new car. I am confident that I will have better luck with the Sonata, Camry, or Accord.

I bought a 3.5 Altima SE in May. Unfortunately, the next morning while driving to work at 65 miles an hour, the front of the car began to shimmy. After taking it to the dealership, they discovered that the tires were out of round and were at fault. They mentioned that they had seen similar issues with these tires before. The car was then taken to a tire company where it took the Bridgestone dealer 8 tires to find 3 that were suitable for my car. At this time, I have less than 4 thousand miles on my car and the sunroof is broken. Pieces fell out of it the second time I opened it. Despite these issues, I appreciate the service I received from the dealership and the tire company. However, I am disappointed with the quality of the car and will be considering other options in the future.

Hey there! About 4 months ago, I bought a 2003 Nissan Altima with 165,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, in those 4 months, I had to replace a few things like the camshaft position sensor, radio, 2 door handles, and alternator. Before the timing chain skipped a few teeth at 169,000 miles. It's been a bit of a hassle, so I've decided to get rid of it. Does anyone need a parts car?

I had always been hesitant to purchase a Japanese car, but when the time came, it seemed like my only option. I decided to go for a Nissan Altima, hoping it would be less boring than the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Unfortunately, despite the extra horsepower, the ride is just as mundane as the Camry or even an Oldsmobile Eighty Eight. On top of that, my service experience was disappointing and the car rattles in new places every time I sneeze. However, I am looking forward to trading it in for a pre-owned BMW or Mercedes in the future. European cars seem to be the better option for me moving forward!

Positive 2003 Nissan Altima car reviews

  1. Tracey Stanton 2025-01-04

This 2003 Altima was an exceptional car that we owned for 5 years and 100,000 miles. Despite being a low-priced, high-mileage car, it was trouble-free and reliable. We purchased it for $3000 in 2013 with 130k miles on it and it had no major repairs. The car was totaled at 230k miles, but we would still be driving it if it wasn't. The base 4 cylinder engine was lively and fun to drive, and the seats were comfortable for long drives. We only needed to replace the battery, alternator, front brakes, and a muffler hanger welded back together. The aftermarket stereo and original speakers were so powerful that they rattled the windows. Overall, this sedan was a testament to the quality and durability of Nissan's engineering.

  2. Gavin Mayer 2024-11-27

I am thoroughly satisfied with this car. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, and there is an abundance of space and power. Although the automatic transmission shifts slowly, I have yet to adjust it. The interior plastic dash and door panels are made of cheap materials, but this was expected when choosing the car. The cup holders, unfortunately, are not very useful. On the other hand, the stereo is fantastic, and the exterior styling is superb.

  3. Joany Casper 2024-11-17

This is definitely the best vehicle you've owned! It has a powerful engine, exotic looks, and a comfortable interior. Overall, it's the best car of 2003.

  4. Lionel Abernathy 2024-10-04

My Altima has been a reliable, stylish, and fast car to drive for the past year, with no problems despite having driven 22,000 miles. It comfortably fits five adults, and my coworkers love the cupholders in the back seat. The racing shift and new design make it sporty yet classy. While there have been some minor issues such as snow gathering under the wheel wells in upstate NY winters, a heavy passenger door, and lower than claimed gas mileage, overall, I am confident in my Altima's performance and would highly recommend it.

  5. Roberto Breitenberg 2024-09-23

The Altima proved to be a fairly reliable car, especially considering my lack of attention to its upkeep. At the time and at its price point, it stood alone in terms of performance and appearance. While the AC went kaput in year four and the engine mounts in year six, the downside was the poor quality of the interior materials (I've seen GM cars with better plastic), and the body was only slightly more dent-resistant than a can of Spam. However, the most frustrating aspect was its awful turning radius, which was inexcusably poor.
