The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 1997 Toyota Corolla problems

The Toyota Corolla 1997 is known for its good, solid reliability, but there are still some common problems that owners have reported. Here are the details of these issues:

  • Recall issues: Models built between November 2001 and April 2002 were recalled due to possible faults with the rear brakes. Cars built between March and May 2002 have had brake pedal problems, and cars built between February and October 2002 have suffered from faulty automatic gearboxes.
  • Cambelt changes: If you are looking at a high-mileage car, it is crucial to ensure that the cambelt has been changed every 60,000 miles. Failure to do so can lead to engine damage.
  • Front wheel bearings: Front wheel bearings can give trouble as the miles mount. This issue can cause noise and vibration, affecting the car's overall performance and safety.
  • Faulty engine electronic control units: Faulty engine management systems can lead to plunging performance and poor fuel economy. These issues can be harder to spot, as they may not always trigger warning lights or codes.
  • Suspension issues: High-mileage estates may have suspension issues, especially if they have been used for heavy load-shifting. Regular checks and maintenance are essential to ensure the car's safety and performance.

These common problems should be taken into consideration when buying a used Toyota Corolla 1997. Regular maintenance, checks, and timely repairs can help avoid these issues and ensure the car's longevity and reliability.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-10-30
  • VIN: 1NXBA02E4VZ
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE,WHEELS
  • Summary: ON MARCH 23, 2013, I PURCHASED FOUR NEW COOPER TIRES FROM SEARS AUTO CENTER IN LIMA, OHIO, FOR MY 1997 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE SPECIFIC TIRES INSTALLED WERE COOPER RESPONSE TOURING M+S 175/65R14, DOT U9EX LRC 4110, A08. SINCE THAT TIME, I HAVE DRIVEN LESS THAN 30,000 MILES ON THE TIRES AND MAINTAINED APPROPRIATE TIRE PRESSURE, MAINTENANCE, AND ALIGNMENT. IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THIS MORNING (OCTOBER 30, 2016), THE TIRE TREAD OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE, CAUSING CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND FORCING ME OFF THE ROAD. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED ON I-475 NORTH TRAVELLING AT THE SPEED LIMIT, IN THE MIDDLE LANE. IT TOOK LESS THAN TEN SECONDS TO COAST TO A STOP. WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE THAT THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES TO IMPACT OURS BEFORE REACHING THE SHOULDER. ADDITIONAL DAMAGE FROM THIS TREAD SEPARATION INCLUDE DESTROYING THE WHEEL WELL, BODY DAMAGE, LAUNCHING THE HEADLIGHT APART FROM THE CAR, SPONTANEOUS RELEASE OF WIPER FLUID ON TO THE WINDOW AS THE TREAD RIPPED OFF FROM THE TIRE, AND OTHER SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TOWED TO TOYONLY, 1050 VIJAY DRIVE, CHAMBLEE, GA 30341. WHILE THE TREAD SEPARATION HAS CAUSED THE AFOREMENTIONED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE, THE VEHICLE IS OTHERWISE MECHANICALLY SOUND. I AM WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM COOPER TIRES.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-07-31
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: THE DESIGN OF THE 1997 TOYOTA COROLLA SEDAN HAS A QUESTIONABLE SAFETY DESIGN IN THE FUEL FILLER TUBE. PART # 77201 OR 7720112500 APPEARS TO BE MAKE OF SIMPLE TUBE STEEL. THIS PART IS NOT PROTECTED FROM ROAD HAZARDS, CHEMICALS, OR ROAD SPRAY THAT CONTAIN SALT SUCH AS NORTHERN U.S., OR SEASIDE ARES. SINCE THIS GAS TUBE IS UNPROTECTED CLAMPS 77216A & 77218A HOLD THIS CORROSIVE CAUSING ACCELERATED RUSTING, AND PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE STEEL PIPE. THIS CAUSES A FUEL LEAK THAT RESULT IN A LARGE DISCHARGE OF FUEL WHILE FUELING, AND A LARGE DISCHARGE OF FUEL WHILE DRIVING . WHILE DRIVING, PRESSURE PULLS FUEL FROM THE MOUNTED TANK, TO THE LOWEST POINT BEHIND THE TANK WHICH IS RIGHT WHERE THE ABOVE LISTED CLAMPS TO THE BODY. THIS COULD SEE AN ESTIMATED DISCHARGE OF 25% OF THE TANK 13G CAPACITY OR 3.25G OF FUEL DISCHARGED PER TANK. ADDITIONALLY, WITH THE WEAKENING OF THE FUEL TUBE, AT THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE UNI-BODY FRAME. A DRIVER SIDE REAR COLLISION COULD SHEAR OFF THE FUEL TUBE FROM THE BODY-FRAME CLAMPS, AND IGNITING FROM THE SPARKS GENERATED BY THE CHEAP STEEL TUBE.THEN FED DIRECTLY FROM THE BACK FLUSH OF FUEL FROM THE TANK. *TT

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-08-17
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1NXBB02E2VZ
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: IN MY 1997 TOYOTA COROLLA, I WAS AT A STOPLIGHT WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO TURN GREEN, WHEN IT TURNED GREEN, I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND ALL OF SUDDEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AUTOMATICALLY TOOK OFF ON IT'S OWN. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING IT HAPPENED SO QUICKLY THAT THE ONLY THING THAT I COULD DO WAS TRY TO STEER AWAY FROM TRAFFIC AND ONTO THE SHOULDER. THE ONLY SAFE PLACE TO GO WAS OVER THE SIDEWALK AND HITTING THE SIDE OF A CHURCH BUILDING ENDING UP IN A DITCH WHEN IT FINALLY STOPPED. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO THE POLICE AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT AND MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOTALED MY CAR. IT IS ONLY BY THE GRACE OF GOD, THAT MY HUSBAND AND I WE'RE NOT SERIOUSLY INJURED. IT NEEDS TO BE KNOWN, THAT THIS ACCELERATOR PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA HAS BEEN GOING ON AT LEAST SINCE 1997. SINCE THEN, I HAVE ENCOUNTERED OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD ACCIDENTS DUE TO THEIR TOYOTA VEHICLE RUNNING OUT OF CONTROL. SHORTLY AFTER OUR ACCIDENT IN 2001, I HEARD REPORTS ABOUT TOYOTA CARS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER TOYOTA CAR EVER AGAIN. IF YOU NEED ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, I WILL BE GLAD TO PROVIDE IT. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO EVERY TOYOTA VEHICLE NOT JUST THE MORE RECENT MODELS. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-17
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I HAD TRANSMISSION FLUSH ON 1997 COROLLA ON DEC 31, 2008. ON JAN 17, 2009, WHILE DRIVING, CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED AFTER STRONG VIBRATIONS. FORTUNATELY, THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON HIGHWAY. THE FIRST REPAIR SHOP SAID TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER LOCKING UP. TRANSMISSION IS NEEDED?. THE SECOND REPAIR SHOP OPENED THE TRANSMISSION AND FOUND ?TRANSFER CASE HAS NO OIL INSIDE?, WITH BROKEN BEARING THAT CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION AND NEED TOTAL REBUILD. BOTH SHOPS SAID IT COULD BE THE RESULTS OF THE TRANSMISSION FLUSH JOB. I CONTACTED THE SHOP THAT PERFORMED THE TRANSMISSION FLUSH AND THEY DENIED OF ANY POSSIBLE MISTAKE. IF THEY HAD ACCIDENTALLY EMPTIED THE DIFFERENTIAL UNIT, THE CAR SHOULD HAVE SEIZED IMMEDIATELY, NOT A FEW WEEKS AFTERWARDS. THEY SAID THAT WITH AGE, THE SEAL BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION AND THE DIFFERENTIAL CASE COULD HAVE BEEN DAMAGED AND THE OIL IN THE DIFFERENTIAL UNIT (TRANSFER CASE) TO LEAK AND EVENTUALLY DRIED UP AND CAUSE THE FAILURE. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON TOYOTA RECALL AND SERVICE BULLETIN. NOTHING OF THIS NATURE CAME UP FOR THIS MODEL YEAR BUT FOUND SIMILAR DESCRIPTION FOR 1997 TOYOTA PREVIA DEFECT RECALL DATE APR04, 1997 WITH DEFECT CONSEQUENCE: ?OIL LEAKAGE WILL RESULT IN A SUFFICIENTLY LOW OIL SUPPLY TO CAUSE BEARING DAMAGE TO THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL UNIT LEADING TO EVENTUAL SEIZURE OF THE UNIT INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. SO COULD IT BE A DEFECT SIMILAR TO THE 1997 TOYOTA PREVIA OR COULD IT BE THE SHOPS MISTAKE TO UNKNOWINGLY DRAIN THE DIFFERENTIAL COMPARTMENT WHICH CAN LEAD TO THE SAME SYMPTOM EVENTUALLY (NOT NECESSARILY IMMEDIATELY AS THEY CLAIMED) *TR

Negative 1997 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Al Harber 2024-10-14

If you're not looking to impress anyone with your car, this vehicle is an affordable and dependable option. It's also much easier to find parking spots for compared to popular SUVs!

  2. Dalton Wunsch 2024-09-12

I must admit that this car is not for me, but it may have its place for others. As someone who considers themselves a 'car guy' and has driven quite a few cars, I have some thoughts to share. While the exterior may not be the most attractive, there are some positive aspects to the car. For example, it has power windows, which is a nice amenity. However, the interior is not very inviting, despite having some decent soft touch plastics. The lack of cupholders is surprising, and the seats feel like sitting on an old sofa. Additionally, the rear seats seem to be missing headrests. The drive is not very enjoyable, with poor acceleration and unresponsive brakes. However, the suspension is okay and does soak up some bumps in the road. While the steering has little direct response, most people could live with it. Overall, if you're looking for a cheap car to get from point A to point B and don't care much about the driving experience, this car may be okay for you. However, if you enjoy driving, I would not recommend it as a daily driver.

Your 1997 Toyota Corolla sounds like an amazing car! You've had her since 2009 and she's never broken down on you, even during multiple trips from SC to FL and back. Although she has had an oil leak since you bought her, you've done a great job of keeping her running by adding oil when needed. You've also taken great care of her by fixing the power steering and changing the belt within the 8 years of owning her. It's impressive that she's still going strong at 234,872 miles!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Toyota. It's been such a reliable car for me! I bought it brand new back in '97 and have only had to do a few minor maintenance tasks like changing the oil every 4k miles, replacing the front brake pads, and changing the plugs at 30k and 60k miles. With 88k miles on it, I'm confident it will last me another 10 years! Plus, I'm getting over 30 MPG all the time, which is great for my wallet. It's amazing how much money I've saved by not having to buy a new car all the time. In fact, it's helping me pay for my daughter's college education! Thank you, Toyota, for making such a great car!

No worries! The battery just needs to be replaced at this time. There's a small dent on the right front fender, but it's hardly noticeable. This car has been incredibly reliable, easy to drive, and simple to take care of.

  4. Lyric Hansen 2024-10-15

I bought my car, a 1995 Ford f150, after having to replace nearly all the parts. Since then, I have taken great care of it, changing the oil every 3500 to 5000 miles and recently doing some work on it. I had a 125,000 tune up and the battery finally died after 10 years. The timing belt is still in great condition, it's like a cockroach, it just won't die! With 127,000 miles on it, I'm confident it will easily reach 300,000 miles. I've thought about getting a new car, but why bother when this one is amazing? It's exactly what auto manufacturers should be producing. During the 125,000 tune up, the mechanic flushed the radiator, replaced the spark plugs, and more. The mechanic even said that I could have gone to 150,000 miles before needing another tune up. I absolutely love my car!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing car. A family member of mine bought it brand new in '97 and I took ownership in '05 with 130K miles. I have to say, this car has been an absolute joy to own! Besides regular maintenance, I haven't had to do much work on it at all. It currently has 190K miles on the original wheel bearings, axles, exhaust, alternator, starter, engine, and transmission - you name it! We've never had any issues with the Check Engine light or any breakdowns. I'm so confident in this car that I would drive it cross-country tomorrow if I had to. The only minor issue I've had is that the AC doesn't work in cool weather to defrost the windows, but it works perfectly in the summer heat. Overall, I can confidently say that this is the best car I've ever owned!
