2019 Hyundai Santa fe problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.
The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.
As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2019 Hyundai Santa fe problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, several common problems have been reported:
- Water Leaks from the Windshield:
- Owners have reported water leaks from the windshield, often occurring within the first 3,000 miles of ownership. This issue is typically due to improperly installed seals on the window. While this problem is usually covered under warranty, if out of warranty, reinstalling the windshield can cost around $200.
- Engine Stalling While Driving:
- Some Santa Fe owners have experienced engine stalling while driving, typically around 5,000 miles. This stalling is often caused by sensor issues in the engine. Restarting the car usually resolves the problem, but if a check engine light appears, using an OBD-II scan tool to diagnose the issue is recommended. Repair costs for replacing sensors can range from $30 to $150.
- Excessive Battery Drain:
- Certain 2019 Santa Fe models have exhibited excessive battery drain around 20,000 miles. The SUV's numerous electrical accessories can draw power while the vehicle is off, leading to this issue. Diagnosing the source of the battery drain can cost around $150, with repair costs ranging from $20 to $200.
- Airbag Failure:
- There have been reports of airbags failing to deploy in the event of frontal collisions. This issue poses a safety risk, as airbags are crucial for protecting occupants during accidents. Failure of airbags to inflate can result in serious injuries, as seen in instances where drivers sustained critical wounds due to non-deployment.
- Transmission and Hard Start of Engine Issues:
- A small number of complaints have been recorded regarding transmission problems and hard starting of the engine in the 2019 Santa Fe. Owners have reported abrupt shifts in transmissions, with some cars speeding up after coming to a stop. Additionally, the engine has been noted to jerk and experience difficulty starting, sometimes requiring a long time to start.
These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, ranging from minor inconveniences like water leaks to more critical safety concerns such as airbag failures and engine stalling. Addressing these issues promptly and ensuring proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks associated with these common problems.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 5NMS53AA8KH
- Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The Forward Collision Assist would intermittently disable during driving. The Lane Keeping Assist light illuminated and would not allow me to disable it causing the vehicle to drive straight only and to make left or right turns extremely hard to turn the vehicle. This incident occurred on [XXX] and was dropped off at Johnson Hyundai in Wake Forest on that date. After a week of no contact of a diagnosis, I had to visit the dealer and was told the steering column was the issue and needed to be replaced. I contacted Hyundai America to report this issue and currently waiting on a response from their warranty to see if they will cover all or a percentage of the replacement of the steering column since my mileage is over their 100k (113k to be exact) coverage. While I appreciate their efforts, I also feel this could have resulted in a very serious incident had my daughter been driving on the highway when this occurred. Thankfully, she was picking me from home and it happened as we drove off from our house in our neighborhood. A steering column should outlast any other part(s) of a vehicle. If not, this is a huge safety concern. My [XXX] was also in the car at the time and I cannot even imagine how I would recover if something worse were to happen while he's on board. Hopefully this reporting will keep something bad from happening to others who own this type of vehicle but failed to report it. Thank you for your time. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-21
- VIN: 5NMS53AAXKH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I had a tow-hitch installed and attached a cargo tray which I previously used with my 2010 Santa Fe. On June 21, 2024 at the end of the first day of our extended vacation the items on the passenger side of the cargo tray had melted. This included elements of the cargo tray itself, a Coleman chair, a brand new (1st use) Yeti cooler, cargo net and bungee cords. The following day I went to a Hyundai dealership in Charlestown, WV who verified the tow hitch was installed correctly but mentioned that the exhaust from my Turbo 2.0 engine was extremely hot and probably contributed to the melting. We were not able to find a way to elevate the tray away from the exhaust or add a shield to divert the heat. We had to discontinue use of the tray and purchase a trailer which connected several feet behind the car. As mentioned, I previously used this same tray with my 2010 Sant Fe without any difficulty or heat issues. I am concerned because of the potential for a fire with items igniting due to the extreme heat. I did not find any warnings about this nor any verbal precautions from the dealer when I purchased the car. If I had been carrying items more flammable I could potentially of had a fire start on the tray while the car was in motion resulting in more severe damage or harm to persons.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-21
- VIN: 5NMS23AD9KH
- Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: I had a serious issue with the Santa Fe lane keeper system. I was driving on I15 in a winding portion through the Virgin River Gorge in relatively high traffic on a corner. I have used this feature many times in the past and expected a gentle nudge on the steering wheel. But unexpectedly the steering wheel turned hard left, almost causing a total loss of control. I am safe driver always checking for other drivers doing what they shouldn't, but I never expected my car to be the one making dangerous movements. If I hadn't had a firm grip on the wheel, I would have been out of control on a narrow bridge in heavy traffic. Am I the only one with this problem?

- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: For the past month my car has been stalling in traffic. The car stalls and then turns back on a few seconds later. It also stalls when I am accelerating after stopping for a red light. This situation is very dangerous and it means that I cannot drive my car expecting to be safe at all. It seems like the motor and the transmission are involved which makes the stalling very dangerous as those are major systems.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-18
- VIN: 5NMS5CAA3KH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My Santa Fe developed difficulty starting beginning the afternoon of February 18. While waiting in stop-and-go traffic to park for a sporting event, the ISG (idle stop-and-go) activated at least 40 times. After at least the 40th time, the Santa Fe did not turn back on. After about 10 minutes, I was able to start it. This happened while I was stuck in very heavy traffic exiting the freeway. After that, it would always take multiple attempts to start the car even though the battery had more than enough power to turn over the starter. After a couple of days of dealing with this, I took the Santa Fe to my local Hyundai dealer. After diagnostics, they were able to reproduce the problem and they determined that the starter had developed an intermittent short which was likely caused by the multiple ISG activations on Sunday, 2/18/2024. While they verbally agreed with me that repeated activation of the ISG was the likely cause of the starter short, they wouldn't put that in the written service statement. At the time of this problem, my Santa Fe was 1,887 miles past the 5-year 60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. I had purchased the Santa Fe a few months ago as certified pre-owned with about 58,500 miles on it so, even though being the 2nd owner, I retained the remainder of the bumper-to-bumper warranty as well as the 10 year 100,000 engine/drivetrain/transmission warranty. Oddly enough the starter, which is attached to the engine is categorized as part of the car's electrical system instead of as part of the engine so the starter replacement wasn't covered. I appealed to the dealer for a discount of some kind. They declined. They claimed to have called Hyundai USA which also supposedly said no to covering the cost of the new starter. A quick Google search for this problem revealed other owners of Santa Fes with the ISG have had the same exact issue.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: 5NMS2CAD3KH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: There is a system in the car that starts and stops engine, supposedly only at lights to save on fuel. Mine has stopped in the middle of a highway on my way up to Tahoe. Luckily I had just left light and only driven enough to reach the speed of about 10 miles per hour so the cars behind me were able to stop and not hit me. I had to completely turn the car off, put in park and restart car to get it to operate. It has stalled out like a stick shift would if not handled properly, but it is an automatic transmission, on numerous times. Sometimes this will cause the vehicle to completely shut down and sometime it will sputter for a few minutes and then slowly pick speed up and stop. The IGS button to turn this feature on and off when you get into the vehicle will sometimes stay off (not supposed to) and sometimes turn back off as it is supposed to each time the vehicle is turned on or off. It doesn't register as a recall, but I have done my research and saw that at one point you guys had done an investigation into this exact problem with my car. It doesn't show up on diagnostic and it doesnt do this every time I drive. So I have no way to show mechanics the isues. But this puts my life and anyone in my cars lives at risk. Not to mention any cars behind me if this happens on the highway again. I dont know what to do :( Can you please help me?
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-17
- VIN: 5NMS2CAD0KH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Oil Pan leaks after an oil change. Oil pan has a hairline crack just below the drain plug after normal tightening of the plug. Excessive oil was found on my driveway. No obvious engine damage, considering the vehicle was only moved from one spot to the other. The dealer stated the oil pan isn't covered under warranty. I simple internet search revealed there was a high number of complaints. It was a "Do It Yourself repair." The cost to fix was to replace the oil pain, new tools and 5 quarts of oil.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
- VIN: 5NMS2CAD1KH

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-13
- VIN: 5NMS5CAA3KH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: At various times the vehicle will not start. It takes multi times to to start the vehicle. The starter and battery have been tested and both are in excellent condition. Both key phob batteries have been replaced and the vehicle at times won’t start but the dash lights turn on. After twice of trying to start the breaks get really stiff. I’ve learned if I get out of the vehicle and open the hood and close it the car will start then any other time getting out and back in it does not start. I even placed the key phob in the designated location of the battery died and still won’t start. The check engine is not on either.

- Summary: On August 24, 2023, I was walking to my car, a 2019 Santa Fe in my driveway. The back windshield spontaneously shattered! It was only 70 degrees out and I had my window cracked open a bit. The noise sounded like a gun shot. I was extremely fortunate that I was not behind the windshield or that I was driving. I have no explanation as to what happened. I called my insurance company, and the windshield is being replaced by Safelite on Tuesday, 8/29/23. However, I have to pay for $483 for a new windshield, my deductible is $500. I am more concerned about safety. I have seen other complaints about Hyundai windshields. Please Hyundai address this issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-07
- VIN: 5NMS53AA8KH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine Failure. Engine stalls during deceleration. If it doesn’t stall while braking, it immediately stalls around 5 mph when I come to a stop sign or red light. Vehicle start/stop button will not work to start the vehicle back up. It is to sit for 10-20 minutes and then it will start. If I don’t let it sit, it gives me a message on the dash that the vehicle is already on/running even though it is not. I have done regular maintenance and have had it serviced 4 times for the same issues. It has 126,000 on it. The dealership said it was the oxygen sensors and spark plugs. We had those fixed and the problem continued. The dealership is now wanting me to pay $11,000 for a used motor to be installed. Check engine light keeps repeating oxygen sensor malfunction. This has been happening since July of 2022.

I was in the market for a new car and had my eye on the 2019 Acura RDX or 2019 Rav 4. Although I had previously owned an Acura and found it to be very nice, I came across some customer blogs that mentioned Infotainment problems. Additionally, I found the back window design to be lacking in visibility and the hump on the hood made it difficult to see. While waiting for the Rav4 to arrive at the dealership, my husband suggested that I check out the Santa Fe from Hyundai. I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw and we decided to visit the dealership in person. A week later, my husband test drove the Santa Fe and we also stopped by the Toyota dealership to see the new Rav4. Unfortunately, they did not have the limited edition in stock for us to test drive. A few days later, I went back to Hyundai and test drove the Santa Fe myself. I was so impressed that I didn't even want to test drive the Rav4! The Santa Fe Ultimate package had everything I wanted and we have been enjoying driving it for almost 4 weeks now. This is a big change for our family, as we currently own 4 Toyota vehicles, but we are thrilled with our decision to go with the Santa Fe.

When you look at other SUVs, you will be convinced that the Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate 2.0T offers the best value for money and warranty. I am really enjoying everything about my new Santa Fe!

I purchased the 2018 Santa Fe Sport Ultimate 2.0 Turbo about a year ago and I have no complaints. Recently, the dealer called me to come out and try the new 2019 Santa Fe. I was blown away by the design, quality, feel, and comfort. I test drove both the 2.0 Turbo Ultimate and the 2.4L Ultimate, and I must say, I was impressed. The 2.0T was peppy and ready to go, while the 2.4L had plenty of get up and go. After an extended drive, I can confidently say that this car beats the 2018 model hands down. The road noise was almost non-existent and it drove exceptionally well. The top-down 360-degree camera is one of my favorite features, making parking and pulling into my garage a breeze. The Hyundai dealer was exceptional and made the change from 2018 to 2019 painless, with no increase in my current payment. Hyundai has a real winner in the new Santa Fe, and now my wife wants one too! Oops!

After researching several SUVs, including the Ford Edge (2017), Honda CR-V (2017), and 2018 Santa Fe, I was concerned about the oil/fuel issue with the CR-V turbo. However, after test driving the 2019 Santa Fe 'Ultimate', I was sold. I opted for the Limited for two big reasons: the Turbo engine and the 12-speaker system. My 2005 Santa Fe lasted 14 years, and I know this one will too. It is incredibly quiet and smooth, and the safety features come on all models, which is fantastic. While I knew the mileage per gallon wasn't great, I still think this is a great car for the money. Even my 30-year-old thinks it's amazing!
-
Great value for money and comfortable driving with advanced safety features. I have owned a Lexus, BMW, and MB, but I must say that Hyundai has the best navigation and safety features.

When I first purchased my vehicle, I called to complain about the car losing power while driving down main roads, almost causing me to be hit by oncoming traffic. Unfortunately, I was not taken seriously and was told that there was no issue. Despite taking the car in several times, I was repeatedly told that everything was fine. Eventually, a part was recalled to fix the problem, which resolved the issue. I also had issues with the seatbelt, which were initially dismissed, but were later resolved after a recall. Both issues were fixed after the recall, but not when I initially reported them. Fortunately, I was never injured. Later, I experienced issues with losing oil, which I was told was normal. However, I have never had this issue with any of my previous cars, including my 4Runner with 300,000 miles. I was losing about 3 quarts of oil between oil changes. Finally, they agreed to do a test where I had to take the car to the dealer every 500 miles, which is a 45-minute drive for me. A couple of times after they finished up, they said it was fine and no oil was lost. However, when I had them check it in front of me, it was absolutely low on oil. They added oil, but didn't change the paperwork. Now, I have to restart the test all over again, but with the current pandemic and me being immune compromised, I have to wait. Had the oil been checked properly, I would be on my way to getting this issue resolved, especially since I've googled and found thousands of complaints about this very issue. Now, at 72,000 miles, my check engine light is on, and I am beyond frustrated. I have never had so many issues with a car, even with my 4Runner with 300,000 miles. I know there is an issue with oil loss, yet drivers are being made to go to the dealer every 500 miles to get it checked. I wouldn't care so much if I wasn't driving 90 minutes round trip. I have always owned Toyotas, but chose Hyundai because I thought it would be a good buy due to your warranty. However, I am disappointed that my oil isn't being checked properly at the dealer. Not only do I check it before I go, but I also stop at an oil change place and have them check it before I drive to Hyundai. This is very dishonest indeed.

Although I am disappointed, I am confident that the issue with my Santa Fe's AC can be resolved. Despite the unfortunate timing of the malfunction, I am certain that the service department will be able to fix it when they reopen on Monday. I am scheduled to leave for vacation in just six days, but I am confident that my SUV will be fully functional by then. I look forward to updating you once the vehicle has been serviced.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Santa Fe that I purchased in February 2019. I absolutely love my car and even took it on a 2k mile road trip. However, I did encounter a bit of trouble when one day the engine wouldn't turn on, even though the lights and AC were working. I was a bit worried, but I called a tow truck and they took it to the dealership. Although they initially thought it was the battery, it turned out to be the starter that went out, which was a bit frustrating with only 9,000 miles on the car. As a new car owner, I had high expectations for reliability, so it was a bit disappointing to be left stranded. I'm hoping that this issue is resolved soon and that there won't be any further problems. Thanks for listening!
