2002 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.

The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).

The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Cavalier 2002, several common problems have been reported:

  • Power Window Motor Failure: Complaints indicate that power window motors may fail due to overheating, causing issues with the windows.
  • Check Engine Light: The check engine light has been a recurring problem, with issues related to the O2 sensor causing the light to come on intermittently.
  • A/C and Engine Problems: Owners have reported problems with the A/C system and engine, including idling issues, RPM variations, and hot air blowing when the A/C is on.

These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by Chevrolet Cavalier 2002 owners. The turn signal switch failure can compromise safety on the road by affecting signaling to other drivers. Power window motor failure can lead to inconvenience and potential security risks. The check engine light issue, often related to the O2 sensor, can indicate underlying engine problems that may affect performance and emissions. Lastly, the A/C and engine problems can impact comfort and drivability, requiring attention to maintain proper functioning of these critical systems.

Why is my 2002 Chevy Cavalier overheating?

The most common reasons a Chevrolet Cavalier is overheating are a coolant leak (water pump, radiator, hose etc.), the radiator fan, or a failed thermostat.

How long can a Chevy Cavalier last?

There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.

Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?

Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.

What is the gas mileage on a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier?

2002 Chevrolet Cavalier MPG

Based on data from 85 vehicles, 3,722 fuel-ups and 1,052,938 miles of driving, the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier gets a combined Avg MPG of 26.95 with a 0.16 MPG margin of error.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1G1JC524327
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHILE ACCELERATING ON AN ON-RAMP ONTO AN INTERSTATE, I WAS USING MY MULTI-FUNCTION DEVICE (SIGNALING MY MERGE INTO TRAFFIC, THEN ONCE AT 65MPH SETTING CRUISE CONTROL) WHEN THE CAR LOST POWER. I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT BEFORE THE WHEEL LOCKED. I TURNED MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON AND COASTED/BRAKED MY WAY TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHO TRIED TO FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. THE INCIDENT WAS ON A SATURDAY. ON MONDAY WHEN THE SHOP WAS OPEN FOR BUSINESS, THEY TRIED THE CAR AND IT STARTED/RAN JUST FINE. THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY CHARGED ME FOR THE TOW ONLY. PREVIOUSLY, THE CAR WOULD FAIL TO START. SIMILARLY DEAD. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT WAS THE IGNITION - REPLACED THAT TWICE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP - REPLACED THAT. I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH-REPLACED THAT THREE TIMES. WINTER 2013 THE CAR STARTED FINE AND THEN A BLOCK FROM HOME ALL POWER WENT OUT AND ENGINE FAILED TO START UP AGAIN. TOWED CAR TO ELECTRICAL SPECIALIST. THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RUSTED OUT WIRE. REPLACED THE WIRE. IT HAPPENED AGAIN SIX MONTHS LATER. THEY REPLACED ANOTHER WIRE. I'VE NOTICE THE CAR WILL THINK A BLINKER IS OUT BEFORE THE WHOLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM JUST FAILS. *TR

  • Summary: PURCHASED VEHICLE FROM DEALER 7/12/13 WITH THE FOLLOWING ISSUES: NON-WORKING ODOMETER, BLINKERS, BRAKE LIGHTS THAT FREQUENTLY "SHORT" OUT & A NON-WORKING WINDSHIELD FLUID FUNCTION. I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER TO TAKE VEHICLE HOME & RETURN IT THE FOLLOWING DAY FOR THE REPAIRS OF ALL THE ABOVE NOTATIONS THAT WERE DISCOVERED DURING A TEST DRIVE. UPON THE TIME OF RETURN, I WAS SADLY & RUDELY APPROACHED BY THE DEALER. HE STATED THAT HE DID NOT CLAIM TO FIX THESE ISSUES? ON 7/17/13, I FILED A "COMPLAINT" WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU REGARDING THIS POOR BUSINESS TRANSACTION. ALL OF WHICH, I HAVE PROOF. DESPITE MY ENDLESS EFFORTS TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE, NOTHING SIGNIFICANT HAS BEEN DONE ON MY BEHALF. I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER A NUMBER OF TIMES, BECAUSE OF MY FAILING BRAKE LIGHTS - WHICH HAVE BEEN REPLACED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. I HAVE HAD CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF POTENTIAL DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, WHERE MY BLINKERS HAVE FAILED & BEING STUCK "NOT" KNOWING HOW MUCH MILEAGE I HAVE ON MY CAR. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE I CANNOT GET RESOLVED & AM HOPEFUL THAT YOU MAY ASSIST. *TR

  • Summary: MY 2002 CHEVY CAVALIER WAS IN FOR FRONT BRAKES....MECHANIC PHONED AND TOLD ME THAT MY CAR'S SUBFRAME WAS CRACKED. MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT IT WAS COMMON WITH THIS MODEL CAR. CALLED GM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE CAR (2002) AND MILEAGE (64,500) THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. I TOLD GM THAT MY MECHANIC SAID THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR CAR. STILL THEY TOLD ME NOTHING COULD BE DONE. I CALLED CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND THEY TOLD ME TO CONTACT THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE WHICH I DID. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ONLY WAY I COULD MAKE OTHER FOLKS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WAS TO CONTACT NHTSA. • VIN: 1G1JC524327
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: ENGINE CRADLE SUBFRAME HAS RUSTED THROUGH ON RIGHT SIDE. LOW MILEAGE, CAR IS PARKED IN A GARAGE, SO IT DOES NOT SIT OUTSIDE ALL DAY AND NIGHT. MY MECHANIC TELLS ME HE HAS SEEN THIS A LOT WITH CHEVYS. HE SAYS IT IS ESPECIALLY TRUE WITH GM CARS DRIVEN IN THE NORTH BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER...SO MUCH FOR BEING IMPORTED FROM DETROIT; ISN'T THAT IN THE NORTH? HE SAYS HE CAN ORDER A USED REPLACEMENT FROM THE SOUTHERN US. I KNOW A CAVALIER IS NOT A TOP-OF-THE-LINE CAR, BUT ISN'T THE FRAME SUPPOSED TO BE THE STROGEST PART? COME ON GM, FIX THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMEBODY DIES! I WAS GOING TO LET MY 16 YEAR OLD KID DRIVE THE CAR, NOW I HAVE TO TELL HIM THAT HE CAN'T BECAUSE AN AFFORDABLE CAR MADE BY THE BIGGEST US AUTOMAKER IS CHEAPLY MADE AND UNSAFE!? *TR

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-11-12
  • VIN: 1G1JC524427
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: MULTIPLE TIMES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID WOULD NOT FLOW ONTO THE WINDSHIELD. I WOULD FILL THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID TANK SEVERAL TIMES A MONTH. FINALLY, I NOTICED THAT THE DESIGN OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUIDS TUBING INTO THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WAS FLAWED. THE TUBING IS ROUTED SO THAT IT PASSES THE WINDSHIELD WIPER TANK AND SEATS UP AGAINST THE HOT CAR BATTERY. AT THIS JUNCTURE, THE TUBING APPARENTLY HAD ROTTED AND MELTED, AND IT CREATED A HUGE HOLE IN THE TUBING. I DO NOT KNOW WHY GENERAL MOTORS DECIDED TO PASS THE WINDSHIELD WIPER TANK, AND SEAT THIS TUBING UP AGAINST THE BATTERY, AND THEN GO DOWN AGAIN, AND FINALLY FIT INTO THE BOTTOM VALVE OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPER TANK, BUT IT SEEMS POINTLESS AND STUPID AND A DEFINITE DESIGN FLAW!!! NOW, I HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THIS TUBING REPAIRED AND PROBABLY REROUTED THE SIMPLER ROUTE, WHICH WOULD ALLOW IT TO BYPASS THE BATTERY, COMPLETELY, INSTEAD OF PRACTICALLY WRAPPING IT AROUND THE BATTERY!!! *TR

I HAD 2 LIGHT BULBS GONE BUT THAT'S IT. THEY REPLACED IT AND WITHIN A WEEK THE SAME 2 LIGHT BULBS ARE BURNT OUT AND THE ODOMETER NUMBERS NOW FLICKER CONSTANTLY. THERE MUST BE A WIRING PROBLEM. SEEING FIRES STARTING IN A COUPLE CAVALIARS MAKES ME REALLY CONCERNED. FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, THE RADIO CHANGES EVERYTIME I TURN THE CAR ON AND THE LIGHT BY THE HEATER CONTROL DOESN'T WORK UNLESS YOU TAP ON IT. SOMETHINGS NOT RIGHT AND I'M TRYING TO FIND A SOLUTION. Negative 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier car reviews

  1. Reilly Von 2024-11-24

Although I have had some issues with my car, I am confident that the dealer will be able to resolve them. I have experienced some stalling when putting the car into drive, but the dealer has been diligent in trying to replicate the issue and fix it. While I have had some trouble with the power windows, cigarette lighter, and power volt, the dealer has been helpful in addressing these issues. I appreciate their efforts to keep my car in good condition and I trust that they will continue to do so. Despite some clunking in the steering when turning, I am confident that the dealer will be able to resolve this issue as well.

  2. Fredy Powlowski 2024-08-08

Purchased new in 2002. This car was great on gas mileage and never failed me in any way. The only maintenance I needed besides oil changes were new brakes and tires. However, the rear seat was poorly designed with a dip that made it difficult to keep my kids in booster seats. Additionally, the seats were not the most comfortable. Despite these minor issues, I loved this car until it was unfortunately totaled in a 25-35 mph accident. Thankfully, I was able to escape with only minor injuries.

  3. Jeramy Green 2024-05-13

You have an excellent vehicle! The only downside is that the dash parts tend to crack quickly with exposure to sunlight, and the original paint job is not the best. However, it's great to hear that you love your z24!

  4. Adalberto Gutkowski 2024-05-13

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2002 2 door LS sport that I bought back in July of 2003 with only 5k miles on it. It was such a great car that was not only extremely reliable, but also relatively fun to drive. The only issue I had was with the driver's side window motor, which needed to be replaced at around 35k miles. Other than that, the car was flawless! Although, I must say that the paint wasn't the best quality as it was prone to scratches and nicks, even with regular waxing. Despite that, I loved my Cavalier and recently traded it in for an '06 Saab 9-3. However, I still miss my Cavalier even with the upgrade. It was such a great little car that served me well during my college years. I was pleased to get a $5k trade-in value for it with 55,000 miles on it. Thanks for listening to my story!

I purchased my 2001 Z24 about a year ago and I must say, I'm quite happy with it! Although I initially had my heart set on a Honda Civic, I'm glad I went with this car. While it may not have the best resale value, it's perfect if you plan on keeping it for the long haul. The acceleration and performance are much better than the Civic, which I found to be lacking in pep. The ride quality is a bit noisier than a Civic, but my wife's Corolla seems to have a smoother ride. However, I opted for the stick shift in the Z24 and it's been a blast to drive! I test drove both the automatic and the manual, and I would definitely recommend the manual. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

My Cavalier, which I bought new in March 2002, still gets great gas mileage even after eight years. It is smooth, quiet, and handles nicely. The car has lots of storage, and the back seat folds down so you can store long items through the trunk and along the back seat. Although I have had some issues with the power windows, such as having to replace the front driver side window motor after three years and now the two back windows starting to stick, it has been working fine for the last five years. Overall, I am confident in saying that it is still a great car!

Hi there! I'm a sport compact guy, and I prefer domestic cars. I usually buy a car that costs less than $20,000 and modify it for racing. I tend to be hard on almost every aspect of the car, but both z-24's (my old '99 and my new '02) have held up extremely well. Of course, I keep them well-maintained, but that goes without saying. If you're into this lifestyle like I am, these cars are an excellent base to build upon. With a few simple engine, exhaust, and transmission modifications, you can really make them shine!

Chevy must have done something really right when they built my car. It's a 1990 Chevy Cavalier that still rides like it's on rails. With 228,000 miles on the clock and everything still original, it's still one smooth ride.

It sounds like you made a great choice with your car! Even though it may not be the fanciest, it's reliable and has served you well. It's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it and that it's been a good value for your money. Using it to go to work is a smart decision. Overall, it seems like you made a wise investment in the best and newest used car you could find for your budget.

Haven't owned it long enough for evaluation, but I had one for 10 years and 140,000 trouble-free miles. This one is much better in initial quality. It's a great day-to-day commuter car and does a better job of providing real-world transportation than my last car, which cost $10,000 more. It's an outstanding deal with a rebate and offers lots of car for the money. Plus, it has great looks!
