volvo logo

The Volvo 850 is a compact executive car that was produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1991 until 1996. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard, the car was introduced in a saloon body style; an estate style was introduced in 1993.

The Volvo 850 was shown for the first time in June 1991, and the car marked a departure for Volvo, featuring multiple unprecedented features for the company; these included a transverse 5-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, a Delta-link rear axle, a side impact protection system, and a self-adjusting front seat belt mechanism.

The Volvo 850 was succeeded by the Volvo S70 and Volvo V70.

Common 1995 Volvo 850 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Volvo 850 1995 model, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Transmission Problems:
    • Early 1993 models of the Volvo 850 were known to have transmission problems, particularly with the first and second gears due to a design flaw. This led to premature wear and damage to the gears, necessitating transmission rebuilding or replacement with a newer model.
    • Symptoms: Difficulty shifting gears, premature wear, and potential damage to the transmission.
    • Solution: Transmission rebuilding or replacement with an updated model.
  2. Cooling System Issues:
    • Over time, the radiator and water pump in the Volvo 850 may wear out, leading to coolant leaks. This can result in engine overheating and potential serious damage if not addressed promptly.
    • Symptoms: Engine overheating, coolant leaks.
    • Solution: Regular maintenance, including coolant replacement and leak checks, is recommended.
  3. Electrical System Malfunctions:
    • The Volvo 850 was known to have issues with its electrical system, affecting the battery, alternator, and airbag system. These problems could lead to a dead battery, starting issues, and malfunctioning airbags.
    • Symptoms: Dead battery, starting problems, airbag system malfunctions.
    • Solution: Replace the battery or alternator as needed, address wiring issues, and diagnose and replace malfunctioning sensors.
  4. Fuel Pump Problems:
    • Some 1993-1997 Volvo 850 models experienced fuel pump issues causing stalling and hard starting, often around 152,000 miles. The problem might actually be a faulty fuel pump relay rather than the pump itself.
    • Symptoms: Excessive stalling, hard starting.
    • Solution: Consult a mechanic to diagnose and replace the faulty fuel pump relay.
  5. Ignition Switch Faults:
    • Certain 1993-1997 Volvo 850 vehicles had faulty ignition switches, leading to illuminated dash lights. This issue typically occurred around 140,000 miles.
    • Symptoms: Dash lights staying illuminated, intermittent lighting issues.
    • Solution: Consult a mechanic to inspect and potentially replace the faulty ignition switch.
  6. Oil Leaks:
    • Oil leaks, particularly in the turbocharger return pipe seal, were common in 1993-1997 Volvo 850 models. These leaks could start small but grow over time, potentially causing overheating and smoke.
    • Symptoms: Turbocharger overheating, smoke production.
    • Solution: Promptly address oil leaks by having the car checked and repaired as soon as the issue is noticed.

By addressing these common problems promptly and with proper maintenance, Volvo 850 owners can ensure a smoother driving experience and extend the lifespan of their vehicles.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-04-27
  • VIN: YV1LW5539S2
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: MY 1995 VOLVO 850 DEVELOPED A GAS TANK LEAK AT A HEAT SHIELD ATTACHMENT. THIS IS THE SAME DEFECT THAT LED TO A SAFETY RECALL OF VOLVO 850'S IN CERTAIN SOUTHERN STATES AND A SERVICE RECALL IN THE OTHER STATES IN 2004 (SEE RECALL CAMPAIGN 04V368000). I WAS NEVER PROVIDED NOTICE OF THIS RECALL, AND VOLVO NOW REFUSES TO PAY FOR THE NECESSARY REPLACEMENT OF THE GAS TANK--A SUBSTANTIAL EXPENSE APPARENTLY CAUSED BY A SAFETY DEFECT THAT THE COMPANY FAILED TO REMEDY. I AM HAVING A NEW GAS TANK PUT IN BY A VOLVO DEALER TODAY. IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, I SAW THAT OTHER AFFECTED VOLVO OWNERS DID NOT RECEIVE ANY NOTIFICATION OF THE RECALL FROM VOLVO. *TR

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-11-06
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: YV1LW5534S2
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: MY WIFE & DAUGHTER SMELLED SMOKE WHILE DRIVING ON A NEIGHBORHOOD STREET. IT SEEMED TO BE COMING FROM UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THEY STOPPED THE CAR RIGHT AWAY AND GOT OUT. AS MY WIFE OPENED THE DOOR TO THE BACK SEAT TO GET HER PURSE, SHE SAW FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THEY RAN TO THE NEAREST HOUSE TO CALL 911. WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH 911, LESS THAN A MINUTE AFTER GETTING OUT OF THE CAR, MY WIFE SAW THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE CAR BECOME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ON THE SCENE WITHIN 3 MINUTES, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE CAR WAS BURNED BEYOND RECOGNITION. WHAT HAD BEEN LEATHER SEATS WERE NOW METAL FRAMES, THE DASHBOARD HAD EVAPORATED, AND THE CAR WAS TOTALED. ALTHOUGH OUR INSURANCE COMPANY COVERED THE LOSS OF THE CAR, WE HAVE HAD TO SPEND SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPLACE BURNT POSSESSIONS (LIKE A CELL PHONE AND A PDA) AND PAY FOR CAR RENTAL. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT INDICATED THAT THE SEAT HEATER WAS THE LIKELY CAUSE OF THE FIRE, BUT VOLVO HAS NOT ADMITTED ANY PRODUCT FAILURE. WHEN WE BOUGHT A VOLVO BECAUSE OF ITS REPUTATION FOR SAFETY ("VOLVO FOR LIFE"), WE CERTAINLY DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO BURN UP! *NM

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-10-12
  • VIN: YV1LS5719S1
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: (1) DRIVING NORMALLY DOWN THE ROAD, SUDDENLY (2) THE CAR HAD NO POWER (COULD NOT ACCELERATE, IT FELT LIKE THE POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES WERE GONE), BUT THE ENGINE APPEARED TO BE RUNNING (I COULD STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND CHANGE THE ENGINE RPMS), BUT DIDN'T GENERATE ANY POWER (IMPROPER AIR/FUEL RATIO?). ONCE I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, THE ENGINE STALLED. (3) I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. IF I STARTED THE CAR NORMALLY, IT WOULD TURN OVER, BUT NOT START--IT ACTED LIKE IT WAS FLOODED. HOWEVER, BY STOMPING HARD ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHILE STARTING THE CAR ALLOWED IT TO START NORMALLY AND I COULD CONTINUE. THIS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES DURING APPROXIMATELY 50 MINUTES OF DRIVING IN 3 DIFFERENT SEGMENTS. I HAVE SUBSEQUENTLY PARKED THE CAR AND HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT SINCE. I WAS VERY LUCKY, AS THE SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE CAR EXHIBITED THIS PROBLEM ALLOWED ME TO SAFELY GET OFF THE ROAD. I CAN IMAGINE MANY SITUATIONS IN WHICH I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT, HENCE I HAVE STOPPED DRIVING THE CAR. *JB

Negative 1995 Volvo 850 car reviews

  1. Giuseppe Weimann 2024-09-28

This car has been a bit of a disappointment. I bought it used at 30,000 miles and unfortunately, it experienced 3 major mechanical failures between 60,000 and 90,000 miles, which ended up costing me over $6,000 in repairs. It seems like there may be some engineering issues with this car, and it hasn't been as reliable as I had hoped. If you're considering purchasing this car or any Volvo, I would recommend getting the extended warranty and being mindful of the warranty expiration date.

  2. Johnathan Ruecker 2024-08-06

After my Caprice died unexpectedly, I confidently chose to purchase a foreign car, specifically an 850, which turned out to be incredibly durable and low maintenance. It served me well for 250,000 miles, a testament to its quality. Although it eventually developed a head gasket issue, I made the confident decision that it was not worth fixing at that stage.

  3. Arely Kunde 2024-07-06

This car, when running properly, is a great option for the 8-10k price range. It has a fast speed and a sharp look. However, it has required quite a bit of maintenance, costing over 2k per year in repairs (not including regular oil changes/tune ups). The repairs have included broken power seats, a new turbo charger, timing belts (twice), oil leaks/seals, sensors, and more. It is as expensive to maintain as a Mercedes and not as dependable. In my opinion, I would not purchase another Volvo without a warranty.

  4. Oswaldo Quitzon 2024-05-03

We bought this car new after our first child was born. I have loved driving it with many children in the back, including the rear-facing seat, feeling safe and protected. Although the car always felt heavy and mushed out on tight curves, I was willing to pay the price for safety and comfort. Unfortunately, the car has been very expensive to maintain due to living on a hill, which requires new tires every two years, seat belt failures, light bulb failures, and heating system failures, all of which are very expensive. The odometer stopped working a few years ago, and we just blew a valve, which is common for Turbos, I'm told. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the safety and comfort that this car has provided me and my family. Thank you, Volvo, for the memories.

  5. Bradly Sauer 2024-04-25

We recently purchased a used car with 167K miles and it is 13 years old. The previous service records showed good care, but unfortunately, we had to spend $3,000 on repairs within just 4 months of owning it. The 'Check Engine' light came on before we even got it home, and the following week we experienced an ABS fault. The ABS Control module, vehicle speed sensor, electronic climate control, and keyless entry have all been unreliable. Today, the car sputters and won't start, and it rattles badly and gives a rough ride. We have owned German cars for over 30 years and decided to try a Volvo for its reliability, but it turned out to be a mistake. We don't think it will make it to 200K miles, and we wouldn't feel comfortable being honest with anyone who wants to buy it. The parts and repairs are very expensive, and it's not DIY friendly. Unfortunately, tow companies seem to love us, and we are afraid to take long trips in this car.

Positive 1995 Volvo 850 car reviews

I bought my Volvo 850 GLT Wagon on e-bay over three years ago and it has been an absolute joy to own. It was a one-owner car with all the service records, and even though it had over 100,000 miles on it, it drove like it was brand new. I'm thrilled to say that I've almost reached 200,000 miles and it still runs like a dream. This car has been the best one I've ever owned! I've only had to replace basic items like brakes and burned-out lights, and the engine never fails to start, even if it's been left for weeks at a time. And let me tell you, it's amazing in the snow! I've considered buying a newer Volvo, but with GM in the picture, I think I'll stick with my pre-GM model. After all, older is better!

I bought this car used and was trusting that everything would be okay. I've never had anything go wrong. It's a great car.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it back in January of 2006 with 100k miles on it, and it still runs like a dream! Recently, I had the chance to compare it to a 2002 Impala with the same mileage and a 3.8 engine, and I have to say, the ride was much smoother in my car. It sits better on the road and has better pickup. Overall, I think it's a true classic!

  4. Bruce Sawayn 2024-10-05

I bought my car with 105,000 miles on it as the fourth owner. It was a great experience to be able to haul around my friends and my stuff during my college days. However, I faced some issues with the car after a year of ownership due to the previous owners not taking proper care of it. Unfortunately, I had to spend $3k on repairs for a $3k car due to a blown piston ring. Despite this setback, I decided to buy a used 2002 XC70 because I loved my 850 so much. It performed exceptionally well during several car trips, including camping, skiing, and paintball. I wish I could have bought another one. It's important to be aware that when buying a used car, proper maintenance is crucial to avoid any issues in the future.

I'm so glad to hear that you've enjoyed your 850 Turbo! Volvos are great cars and they just keep getting better. They're safe, quick, and perfect for hauling your family and their belongings. If you're thinking of buying a used 850, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1) Make sure the timing belt has been changed at the required interval. 2) Check that the AC system blows cold, as the evaporator can be expensive to repair. 3) Look out for any warning lights, such as the 'Check Engine' or 'ABS' light. 4) Ensure that the brake rotors are free from warps, which can cause the steering wheel to shudder. 5) Consider having a Volvo dealer perform a pre-purchase inspection. With proper care, you can expect great quality and reliability from a used Volvo, even with high mileage. However, it's important to budget for annual maintenance and repairs, which can average around $700-$1000.
