2008 Jeep Commander problems

The Jeep Commander XK and XH (for diesel-powered export version) is a mid-size SUV that was manufactured from 2005 to 2010 by the Jeep division of the American manufacturer Chrysler.

Concept car

Jeep exhibited a concept car named Commander during the 1999 auto show circuit. The concept featured an experimental direct methanol fuel cell that produced electricity to charge a nickel–metal hydride battery pack. Full-time four-wheel drive was by a severe duty electric motor on each axle. The suspension could be raised 4 inches (102 mm) for traversing off-road purposes. The overall styling influenced the development of the third-generation Grand Cherokee that was at that time six years away. The concept car had the same height as production Grand Cherokees, but was about 8 inches (203 mm) wider. This allowed for an interior featuring an extra wide center console in the front and three bucket seats in the second row. The Commander concept had no relation to the production SUV.

Production

The production version of the Jeep Commander (XK and the diesel-powered XH export version) debuted at the 2005 New York Auto Show as a five- or seven-passenger counterpart of the Jeep Liberty. It was developed to target consumers who wanted a three-row SUV, but designed to be only two inches longer than the Jeep Grand Cherokee with its two-rows of seats as well as to be assembled on the same production line.

It shared its unibody construction, independent short/long arm front suspension and its 5-link live rear axle with the Grand Cherokee on which it was based. It featured an upright windshield and squared-off sides. Its stepped roof was disguised by the roof rack; a design similar to the GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT. This allowed the second and third-row seats to be mounted higher than the first-row seats.

Common 2008 Jeep Commander problems

The Jeep Commander, while a reliable SUV, is not without its common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2008 Jeep Commander:

  • 4WD System Warning Light On for No Reason: Some owners of the 2006-2010 Jeep Commanders report that their service 4WD system warning light would suddenly activate even if there are no fault codes stored in the final drive control module (FDCM). A software update for the vehicle’s FDCM corrected the issue on most affected vehicles.
  • Manual Temperature Control Malfunction: Several owners of 2006-2010 Jeep Commanders have reported cases of manual temperature control malfunction. Drivers of affected vehicles have noticed warm air coming through the instrument panel outlets even after selecting the cold setting. Some mechanics recommend installing a revised air distribution housing to solve this issue.
  • Delayed Transmission Engagement: Some units from the 2006-2009 model years of the Jeep Commander may exhibit delayed transmission engagement because of a faulty internal cooler return filter. Cooler filters with the “AB” suffix in the part number may need to be replaced to solve the issue.
  • Electrical Problems: Owners have reported issues with their radio, faulty backup sensors, and malfunctioning dash gauges for no reason. Although some of these issues are minor, they shouldn’t be ignored. Have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic right away to accurately diagnose your Jeep Commander’s interior components.
  • Rust Formation Under the Windshield Trim: The top complaint about the 2008 Commander is the rust formation under the windshield trim. Two reports claimed that the paint under the trim began to peel away, revealing rust underneath.

While these issues are common, it's important to note that the Jeep Commander is still considered a reliable SUV. RepairPal gave the model a 3.5 out of 5, ranking it 15th out of 32 vehicles in its segment.

  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • VIN: 1J8HH48K68C
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Electrical System is failing. Began with the Electrical sunroof will not open/OR slide all the way open, the sunroof Electrical problem has been this way since I purchased it in 04/2019. Next the touchscreen panel for the radio AM/FM, will shit off while driving down the road randomly and sporadically. CD Player quit working indefinitely, i cant even get my CD out of the CD player. Will not play any CD or radio if cd player is attempted to be activated. Airbag warning light is showing on dash 24/7, however, vehicle has never been wreaked. No airbag been deployed. Vehicle has NEVER been in a wreak. caused injury due to rough and rugged suspension and while driving the vehicle throws passengers and driver. Has been Serviced & checked. has failed to start 23 times in a row. checked alternator, starter, ect. 7-10 minutes of attempting to start without luck. professional mech. claimed its the electrical system; pro mechanic fixed problem. Problem persists with Electrical system has caused the gears to slip while cruise control is actively in use and if going up a hill rpm's will sky rocket from 1 to 6 in a heartbeat. JEEP COMMANDER is a v6 but drives as a 4 cylinder. Driving on Highway is dangerous when Electrical system breaks down without warning. This has scared my fiance and I several times for fear of our lives. Suspension and shocks do not work well, as the slightest bump is rough and rugged throwing passengers & driver around. All these defects never occurred until 2021. Electrical system is the most important component of the vehicles makeup it makes everything run smoothly and every single day i have electrical system problems that effects my safety and anyone in my 08 jeep commander. This is a manufacturer problem, i know this because a professional mechanic informed me of this and asked me to request a recall on my vehicle. Please help to correct these issues for the safety of all those on the road. Thank you for your time and consideration. God Bless

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-15
  • VIN: 1J8HH48K68C
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The Electrical System has failed. The center sound system shuts off and reboots on its own every hour or 2 causing electronic failure and has proven to get worse over time. Following that the Jeep will randomly not start, mechanics have told me that it must be the Electrical System because it is not starter, alternator or the battery. Failure to start engine has occurred over 20 times...effecting my ability to drive to work a few times. Power Train has failure has caused electronic control, software, shift lever/gear control and indicator devices, torque, drive axles, hubs, shafts, CV joints, housings and related safety systems to fail/stop working while in drive; example the Jeep was driving 50 miles an hour and transmission gears shut down and i tried shifting into neutral attempt to start transmission/engine failure. All transmission gears shut off. Then after 5 minutes came back on and started working again while driving down a country highway , luckily no other vehicles passed during this incident. This scared me and the passenger in fear of wreaking from lack of control of the vehicle. This has happened 2 times. Having severe problems with gear shifting or transmission failure. Has presented a safety hazard. The speed control fluctuates when driving up a hill or vehicle stalling while driving at 50 mph and must let off the accelerater in order to get vehicle back into correct gear. Vehicle has been inspected by mechanic by using diagnostic tests and each time they cannot find anything wrong with the transmission or engine...only Electrical System which makes sense because the Jeep is a smart car and professionals have informed me to take the jeep to the manufacturer inorder to fix the Electrical Systems malfunctions. there were no messages/warnings prior to each failure which began in the spring of 2021. Except the radio/center electronic consol which failure of the screen, DVD/Video, & radio transmissions that shut down and reboot every 2 hours started 2019.

Next the panel for the radio and screen panel for AM/FM, Then the CD Player quit working all together. Will not play any CD. Airbag warning light is showing on dash, however, vehicle has never been wreaked. No airbag been deployed. Starting the vehicle, within the past 6 months 2008 commander has failed to start over 20 times after continuously checking alternator, starter, ect. Informed it is the Electrical System failing; By professional. Vehicles Electrical system has caused the gears to slip and it is a v6 but drives as a 4 cylinder. Driving on Highway is dangerous when Electrical system breaks down without warning. Suspension and shocks seem to not work well, as the slightest bump is rough and rugged throwing passengers around. All these defects never occurred from April 2020 until recently about December 2021. Electrical system Repair is thousands of dollars to fix or replace. This is a manufacturer problem. Please help to correct these issues for the safety of all those on the road. Thank you for your time and consideration.

STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-25
  • VIN: 1J8HG68288C
  • Components: STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The sunroof on my 2008 Jeep Commander leaks profusely, even in mundane conditions like a rain sprinkle or carwash. Throughout the year, whenever there is a rain downpour, water leaks through the sunroof and side posts to the point that water is sloshing and splashing around as I drive, and splashes up on me when I stop. Through online research, I've learned that Chrysler refuses to address and correct the faulty drainage tubes causing the leaky sunroofs, nor does Chrysler honor warranty claims for these sunroofs despite issuing at least 7 Technical Service Bulletins about its vehicles’ faulty drainage tubes and leaking sunroofs between 1999 and 2010, the class action lawsuit says. I am now having to spend hundreds, if not thousands, to have the sunroof and side post drainage channels repaired. Thousands of other Jeep owners have had this same issue. I implore you to please hold Jeep/Chrysler accountable, and force them to rectify this faulty, defective, and poorly manufactured product that they call a "sunroof", which is actually just an open portal for water to soak us both literally and monetarily. Because of recent hail storms locally, no repair shop is even able to look at my Jeep's sunroof until November. So that means I'll have to continue arriving to work and other destinations soaking wet. Looking forward to your response and action on this matter. 2008 Jeep Commander recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Jeep Commander.

2014-09-17
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008 Chrysler 300 vehicles manufactured May 31, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Dodge Magnum vehicles manufactured May 23, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Dodge Charger vehicles manufactured May 24, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured April 3, 2007, to May 12, 2008, and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured March 21, 2007, to May 12, 2008. In the affected vehicles, the ignition key (FOBIK) may not return to the "ON" position after being rotated to the "START" position, instead sticking between the two positions. Potentially, while the vehicle is being driven, the ignition may inadvertently move through the "RUN" position to the "ACCESSORY" or "OFF" ignition position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the ignition stays between "START" and "ON" positions it could cause loss of certain electrical functions. If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the "OFF" or "ACCESSORY" position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch and key FOBs, free of charge. The recall began August 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P57.
2013-05-07
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
  • Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on my recent switch from a Toyota to a Jeep. While the Jeep has been reliable and steady through the first 2000 miles, I do feel that there is room for improvement. In my opinion, the vehicle would benefit from having seating for five instead of seven, as it would improve the ergonomics of the interior. I also wonder why Jeep wouldn't make this their full-size vehicle and make it world-class, rather than competing directly with the Grand Cherokee and keeping the Durango/Aspen. Overall, I think there is potential for the Jeep to be even better and I look forward to seeing what improvements they make in the future.

I purchased a 2008 Jeep Commander from Used Hertz Car Sales with a warranty and only 14800 miles. Unfortunately, after just one month, the vehicle experienced a complete electrical failure. Thankfully, Hertz was very supportive and the issue was resolved under warranty. However, I did have to request a receipt from JEEP twice before receiving one. Four months later, while driving through Iowa, the top of the windshield seal blew off due to headwinds of about 40mph. The Jeep dealership initially claimed that the windshield had been replaced, but Hertz came to my defense and proved that it had not been replaced. Despite these quality control issues, I still love my Jeep and think it is a very nice vehicle.

I have experienced several electrical issues with this car since purchasing it, and unfortunately, the dealership was not very helpful in resolving them. The locks have been malfunctioning, locking and unlocking unexpectedly while driving. Additionally, the auto wipers and reverse assistance features have not been performing up to par. The Sirius equipment was also faulty. The angle of the windshield has made it susceptible to road debris, resulting in the need to replace two windshields within six months. Although the brakes required replacement within a year, they needed to be replaced again just six months later. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in finding a solution to these issues. It is worth noting that the middle seat area lacks sufficient legroom.

I purchased a 2008 Commander Limited 4.7 as an 'executive use' car with only 15,000 miles in December 2008. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the mygig system and antenna wiring, which required multiple trips to the dealership for repairs. Additionally, I noticed some vibration at speeds over 70 mph, which also required multiple visits to the dealership. Although the issue was not completely resolved, the front seats are comfortable and spacious, and the sound system is excellent. However, I would advise against rolling down the front windows in the rain, as water tends to flood in. Also, the near-vertical front window can make it difficult to see traffic signals. Overall, I hope these experiences can help improve the quality of the vehicle for future buyers.

This car has required a significant amount of repairs, including the replacement of the transmission, air conditioning, and radiator. Despite these efforts, the car continues to experience issues. Additionally, the gas mileage is poor, making it less efficient than other comparable vehicles. While I do not drive recklessly, the car has consistently failed me with only 80,000 miles on it. It is clear that there are significant issues with this model of Jeep.

Hey there! I also own a Jeep Commander 5.7 V8 Limited and I've found a cool trick to get cold air without using the air conditioner compressor and still maintain good fuel economy. If you have the dual control with a vent dial and fan speed dial, turn the right dial to auto and adjust the fan speed to your liking. Then, turn the temperature dials all the way down and voila! You'll get cool air without the air conditioner light coming on. I believe the dehumidifier is taking the moisture out of the air and pumping out cold air without using the compressor. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you! Best regards, Dr. Burke.

We previously owned a Jeep Liberty and had to upgrade in size. The Liberty was a great Jeep, so we decided to stay in the Jeep family. For a family of four, the Commander has been awesome. The kids love riding in the third row because their feet reach the floor - only suitable for little ones because there's no leg room. The front is very spacious and controls are easily accessible to both the driver and passenger. I'm not too bothered that there isn't much storage behind the third row when it's up, but it wasn't a deal breaker by any means. We're really excited for our road trip next month because we'll have plenty of room for comfort and storage. Overall, we're extremely happy with this vehicle.

I recently purchased a used car with only 12k miles on the odometer and so far, it has been great! The 4x4 works perfectly and has already saved me from a tricky situation. The interior is very comfortable and practical, although I don't use the 3rd row much, it's good to have it just in case. I did have a flat tire and while changing it was straightforward, the steel wheel spare was too heavy for me to lift onto the studs, even though I work out 2-3 times a week. Other than that, I can't find many faults. The throttle response is a bit slow and the headlights could be brighter. It would also be great if the gas door locked when the car is locked. The gas mileage could be better, but considering it's a V8 with 4wd, I guess 15-16mpg overall is reasonable.

Wow, this car is really impressive! It always inspires confidence in other drivers and gives you a safe, comfortable feeling of being in control. While it may not be the best choice for families with kids, it's definitely plush and right up there with a Cadillac in terms of luxury. Plus, it's great for off-roading! I was able to take advantage of the 'Let's Refuel America' deal and got 800 gallons of gas for just $2.99 per gallon, which is amazing considering how unpredictable gas prices can be. And if gas prices do go up, they'll credit you the difference, which is like having money in the bank. Right now, there's even a May sale going on with a $2,000 discount, a $1,500 rebate, and a gas card. If you push and ask to see the 'special' rebate for dealers, you could save even more!

We are thrilled with our new Commander, which has exceeded our expectations. As a family of Jeep enthusiasts, we have owned two Grand Cherokees and a Cherokee, but this one stands out above the rest. The high ride and excellent front visibility make for a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience, and the seats are incredibly comfortable. Despite being a V8, the engine (4.7) gets a respectable 13 mpg around town and 19 on the road. The side airbags are an excellent safety feature that gives us peace of mind. We sincerely hope that Jeep does not discontinue the Commander in 2009, as it is the only full-size SUV that seats seven passengers and is competitive with other larger family SUVs. Additionally, it is one of the few full-size SUVs that can handle off-road terrain.
