2010 Jeep Commander problems
The Jeep Commander XK and XH (for diesel-powered export version) is a mid-size SUV that was manufactured from 2005 to 2010 by the Jeep division of the American manufacturer Chrysler.
Concept car
Jeep exhibited a concept car named Commander during the 1999 auto show circuit. The concept featured an experimental direct methanol fuel cell that produced electricity to charge a nickel–metal hydride battery pack. Full-time four-wheel drive was by a severe duty electric motor on each axle. The suspension could be raised 4 inches (102 mm) for traversing off-road purposes. The overall styling influenced the development of the third-generation Grand Cherokee that was at that time six years away. The concept car had the same height as production Grand Cherokees, but was about 8 inches (203 mm) wider. This allowed for an interior featuring an extra wide center console in the front and three bucket seats in the second row. The Commander concept had no relation to the production SUV.
Production
The production version of the Jeep Commander (XK and the diesel-powered XH export version) debuted at the 2005 New York Auto Show as a five- or seven-passenger counterpart of the Jeep Liberty. It was developed to target consumers who wanted a three-row SUV, but designed to be only two inches longer than the Jeep Grand Cherokee with its two-rows of seats as well as to be assembled on the same production line.
It shared its unibody construction, independent short/long arm front suspension and its 5-link live rear axle with the Grand Cherokee on which it was based. It featured an upright windshield and squared-off sides. Its stepped roof was disguised by the roof rack; a design similar to the GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT. This allowed the second and third-row seats to be mounted higher than the first-row seats.

Common 2010 Jeep Commander problems
The Jeep Commander, produced from 2006 to 2010, is known to have several common problems that affect its reliability and performance. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues, based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Service 4WD System Warning Light: Some owners of the 2006-2010 Jeep Commanders have reported cases where their service 4WD system warning light would suddenly activate, even if there are no fault codes stored in the final drive control module (FDCM). A software update for the vehicle’s FDCM has corrected the issue on most affected vehicles.
- Manual Temperature Control Malfunction: Several owners of 2006-2010 Jeep Commanders have reported cases of manual temperature control malfunction. Drivers of affected vehicles have noticed warm air coming through the instrument panel outlets even after selecting the cold setting. Some mechanics recommend installing a revised air distribution housing to solve this issue.
- Delayed Transmission Engagement: Some units from the 2006-2009 model years of the Jeep Commander may exhibit delayed transmission engagement because of a faulty internal cooler return filter. Cooler filters with the “AB” suffix in the part number may need to be replaced to solve the issue.
- Electrical Problems: If you’re planning to buy a 2008 Jeep Commander, you may want to check the vehicle for electrical problems. Owners have reported issues with their radio, faulty backup sensors, and malfunctioning dash gauges for no reason. Although some of these issues are minor, they shouldn’t be ignored. Have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic right away to accurately diagnose your Jeep Commander’s interior components.
Despite these issues, the Jeep Commander is generally considered to be a reliable SUV, with a RepairPal score of 3.5 out of 5, ranking it 15th out of 32 vehicles in its segment.
How many miles will a 2010 Jeep Commander last?
The Jeep Commander can last up to 200,000 miles or 15 years. Some common issues Commander owners report include broken exhaust manifold bolts, faulty 4WD system warning lights, and warm air from the instrument panel outlets.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
- VIN: 1J4RG4GKXAC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine failed while driving at major intersection. Multiple individuals had to assist and avoid causing an accident. After a week at diagnostic Jeep service department, techs determined compression failure in cylinders 2 and 4 with 0 psi. There no codes or check engine lights other than a brief blinking right before failure.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-02
- VIN: 1J4RG4GKXAC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The electrical system of my car malfunctioned intermittently causing lights, ac, and the engine itself to go off and on in the middle of the freeway. There was a recall on the 2010 Jeep Commander (same as my car) for faulty electrical system, yet my VIN was excluded. I believe it should have been included in the recall and this faulty electrical system was the cause of multiple repairs done at my expense to the tune of a couple thousand dollars. I ask for a query into this. The electrical system is the nexus of a car’s mechanical system and if not functioning correctly causes all else to eventually fail. The lights would not turn off after I turned them off, removed keys, and exited vehicle. Various lights would flash on the dashboard then suddenly disappear not providing enough time to read them. Many or all dashboard lights and AC would go out intermittently sometimes reappearing shortly later. Sometimes the car would shock me while driving on the freeway and therefore poses a safety threat to everyone else and me. Ultimately the engine went out while on the freeway. Jeep takes close to a month to fix a Power Control Module and fuel pump replacement and fuel line. Reconsider requiring them to extend the electrical system recall to more 2010 Jeep Commanders. An electrical system main control is not a typical thing to need to replace in a low mileage car.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-24
- VIN: 1J4RH4GK0AC
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: FOUR (4) Cooper Adventure HT 245/65R17 were purchased in late 2019 from PepBoys at 6900 Highway 6 North, Houston, Tx 77084. One tire (front Driver side) began separating on November 2021 and was replaced at no charge by PepBoys under Mfg Warranty. 2nd Tire (Rear Driver side) experienced a blowout while driving to Houston along I10 east of Shulenburgh, Tx, on Sunday July 24th. Fortunately i was able to replace blowout tire with the spare but my son's safety and my own safety was compromised as the shoulder on that stretch of the interstate is not very wide as i replacing the tire within 4Ft of zooming 18-wheelers and other vehicles going by in 100F degree weather. The incident ocurred at 545pm aprox - The blowout caused the rear fender to break and the moulding above the tire and rear door broke from the car also. I estimate the repair will cost around $5-6K or so aproximately. PepBoys replaced blowout rear tire and the other 2 tires as well.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-22

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-07-27
- VIN: 1J4RG5GT1AC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: " TAKATA RECALL" I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2010 JEEP COMMANDER. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS PAST WEEK THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE AND LEFT ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THANK GOODNESS IT WAS NOT DURING RUSH HOUR. THERE WAS NO WARNING AND COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. LET ME START BY STATING THAT THIS JEEP HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY CARED FOR FROM DAY 1 AND EVERY RECOMMENDED SERVICE AND OIL CHANGE HAS BEEN DONE ON TIME. THIS IS OUR FAMILY CAR AND NOT AN OFF ROAD TOY. I DROVE MY JEEP WITH RESPECT AND CARE. SO, HOW AND WHY DID THE TIMING CHAIN BREAK AND DESTROY THE ENGINE? I CALLED 3 OTHER LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIPS ASKING THIS QUESTION AND THE RESPONSE WAS THE SAME WITH EACH CHRYSLER MECHANIC 'NEVER HEARD OF THIS ON THE JEEP COMMANDER' AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, I DID FIND SEVERAL CHAT BOARDS AND AN ARTICLE IN HOT ROD MAGAZINE TALKING ABOUT THE 5.7L HEMI TIMING CHAIN BREAKING IN CHALLENGERS, CHARGERS AND 300'S. EVENTUALLY, THERE WAS A RECALL TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. ACCORDING TO SEVERAL SOURCES, MY COMMANDER HAS THE SAME ENGINE FROM THE SAME TIME PERIOD THE RECALL OCCURRED. SO WHY ARE JEEP'S NOT INCLUDED? CHRYSLER KNOWS THIS IS AN ISSUE AND HAVE CHOSE NOT TO ADDRESS IT. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN BAD, HAD MY VEHICLE STALLED OUT THE WAY IT DID ON THE HIGHWAY IN RUSH HOUR.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-07
- VIN: 1J4RH5GT0AC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: THE JEEP WILL STALL OUT WHILE DECELERATING EVERY FEW MONTHS FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. MOST OF THE TIME IT HAS BEEN WHILE APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION FROM SPEEDS OF 30-45 MPH, SO I HAVE LEARNED TO POP THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL TO RESTART THE CAR WHILE IN MOTION. THIS IS HORRIBLY SCARY AND DANGEROUS SINCE I OBVIOUSLY CANNOT STEER DURING THE PROCESS, AND HAVE, AT LEAST FOUR TIMES, BEEN MAKING A LEFT-HAND TURN ACROSS TRAFFIC. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT THEY DON'T EVEN LOG ME IN BECAUSE THEY SAY THAT SINCE I HAVE NO ILLUMINATED INDICATOR LIGHT, THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. THIS IS SO DANGEROUS THAT I WOULD GET RID OF THE CAR, EXCEPT THAT I CANNOT REPLACE IT WITH ANYTHING COMPARABLE. I LOVE MY JEEP AND JUST WANT IT TO NOT TRY TO KILL ME.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-09-10
- VIN: 1J4RH4GK8AC
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: I HAVE HAD TWO FAILURES IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS WITH THE TPS TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR SYSTEM RESULTING IN TWO FLAT TIRES AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS WITH THE LOSS OF ONE TIRE COMPLETELY. THE NUT THAT FASTENS THE SENSOR TO THE RIM HAS CORRODED AND JUST CRUMBLED IN MY HAND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE IT. IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL TO REPAIR THIS DEFECT? HAVE HAD TO CALL AAA TWICE TO REMOVE AND REPLACE TIRES.

I absolutely adore my '09 Commander (6 cylinder, 2WD) - I purchased it brand new on August 1, 2009. Although I have only driven 95,000 miles, it has given me very little trouble. I have yet to replace the original shocks/struts, but I have gone through two sets of Wranglers (I highly recommend switching to Michelin's). I have encountered a few issues with ABS sensors and check engine lights, as well as some exhaust problems. However, my only other problem is a faulty front windshield wiper fluid reservoir, which I have given up on fixing after paying twice to do so. ***Update 2/7/21*** The Commander is still going strong. I need new struts and shocks, but everything else is in great condition. I have driven about 112,000 miles now. Normally, I only drive about 8,000 miles a year, but due to Covid, I have been driving much less since I have been working from home.

I'm glad to hear that you're very satisfied with your vehicle! It's great to know that the four wheel drive system is excellent and that the powertrain is very powerful, smooth, and quiet. It's also impressive that you're achieving slightly better mpg than EPA estimates. Keep up the good work!
-
I think it's important to have realistic expectations. After all, you wouldn't buy a Commander for off-roading - that's what the Wrangler is for! But if you're looking for a comfortable, powerful family car, then this is definitely the one for you. Personally, I absolutely love my Jeep and always enjoy driving it.
-
I've had some minor issues with my Jeep. I need to replace the catalytic converter and the head gasket may need attention, but I'm willing to pay whatever it takes to fix it because I can't buy a newer model. This is the last model made and I'm not ready to part with it just yet. I absolutely love it! Every time a friend jumps in, they say 'Wow, this is nice, I had no idea!' Please bring them back, Jeep! I know mine won't last forever, and that's what's tough.
-
I love my jeep! The ride is so smooth and it's an absolute joy to drive on long trips. The room is comfortable for a family of three, which is great. Although, I do wish the mpg could be a bit better. If it could just get about 19-22 on average, that would be fantastic!

I rented a Jeep Commander V-8 for a long weekend of 800+ miles of driving my daughter home from college. If you're a fan of the classic Jeep look, you'll find it appealing. However, the overall performance leaves much to be desired. While 20 MPG on the highway is acceptable, 15 MPG in the city isn't, even for a V8 SUV. The interior has some nice storage compartments, but the seating is subpar and unsupportive, which can be uncomfortable on long drives. On the bright side, the sight lines and visibility are excellent.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Commander. I come from a long line of JEEP lovers and decided to buy one with 25 miles on the odometer. Although there is usually a lot of aftermarket support for JEEP, I found that there wasn't much for these fake Jeeps. Initially, I wanted a new JK 4 door, but my partner wanted a car that could seat 6+. That's how we ended up with the Commander. At first, my partner loved it as she only drives 16 miles to work and back 3 days. Unfortunately, at only 1,400 miles, the transmission seized and had to be fixed. We are now at 10,000+ miles and the back up warning and tire pressure monitor is constantly acting up and giving warning lights. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I love it, but on the other hand, I hate it. The big issue is the IFS front suspension and the fact that the entire body is half plastic. I think I will stick with my 20 year old modified XJ at 200,000 miles, as I can wheel it. Thank you for listening to my story!

The gas tank size is only 21 gallons, which means you may need to stop for gas every 180 miles or every 3 hours. Additionally, while towing an empty trailer weighing approximately 800 lbs, I got 12.5 mpg on the freeway. The Hemi engine consumes a lot of gas, similar to a 454 Suburban 4x4. Unfortunately, the Sirius radio reception was poor, as it only came on three times for a total of 10 minutes during a six-hour drive.

The Jeep rides very smoothly, almost like a luxury vehicle. While the front seats are comfortable, the back seats can be uncomfortable on long trips, as they are positioned too high and can cause leg pain. Although I appreciate the theater seats for the view, they are not the most comfortable option. Unfortunately, my brand new Jeep has experienced several issues, including the oil cover falling off, the water pump failing, and the tensioner belt breaking, among other problems. I have had to take my vehicle back to the dealer multiple times, which has been frustrating. As someone who takes long trips, I am concerned about the reliability of my Jeep. However, I must say that it performs perfectly in the snow, which is a definite plus.
