The Nissan Ariya is a battery-electric car produced by the Japanese company Nissan since January 2022. It is a compact crossover SUV and is produced at Nissan's factory in Tochigi prefecture. The Ariya is the brand's first zero-emissions SUV. It was first revealed in July 2020, with the US launch of the Ariya initially planned for the second half of 2021, before being delayed to 2022.

Overview

Originally slated to hit the market in 2021 at a starting price of $40,000, the Ariya production version was unveiled in July 2020. Due to the chip shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ariya's launch was delayed to 2022 from its original 2021 launch.

In November 2021, pricing was revealed for the North American market. Deliveries began in the United States and Canada in the fall of 2022 for the 2023 model year.

The Ariya is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (e-4ORCE) variants and with a 63 kWh or 87 kWh battery size. The 63 kWh battery is only available on the Engage base trim. Standard technology on the Ariya includes Nissan's Safety Shield 360 system, which includes the ProPILOT driver assist system. The more advanced ProPILOT 2.0 system, which allows hands-free driving under certain conditions in available on some trims.

Common 2023 Nissan Ariya problems

The 2023 Nissan Ariya, Nissan's new electric vehicle, has been facing production issues, as reported by Reuters. Four people familiar with the matter stated that problems at the high-tech production line have been hampering the new electric vehicle. This issue has affected the company's comeback in the electric vehicle market.

One of the primary concerns with the 2023 Nissan Ariya is related to its paint process. According to a report in Japan's Driver Web, there appears to be a problem with the painting process at Nissan's Tochigi factory, which affects both the Ariya and the 2023 Nissan Z sports cars. The factory uses an automated paint inspection system and water-based paint with low-temperature curing, which decreases energy consumption and recycles air used in the drying process. However, it is unclear which step in this process is causing the problem. Nissan cannot increase production until it solves the issue, which has led to below-average inventory nationwide for both cars. The company has just a 33-day supply of the Z and more than 50 days' worth of Ariya vehicles, but some dealerships are not equipped to sell the electric car.

In addition to these production issues, the 2023 Nissan Ariya has faced complaints from owners about various problems. The Nissan Issues Nissan Ariya Forum on ariyaforums.com includes threads about EV System Errors, with several owners reporting similar issues

Consumer Reports expects the 2024 Ariya to be more reliable than other new cars, based on limited data on the Ariya and the Nissan brand score. However, the reliability of the 2023 Ariya is still being determined, as the sample size for this model year is not large enough to provide results of statistical confidence.

In summary, the 2023 Nissan Ariya has faced production issues related to its paint process, which has affected the availability of the car. Additionally, some owners have reported problems with the EV System, raising concerns about the reliability of the vehicle. However, it is important to note that the sample size for this model year is still limited, and more data is needed to make a definitive assessment of the car's reliability.

What is the problem with Nissan Ariya?

"On affected Ariya vehicles, there is a potential that conductive fibrous shavings from the drive motors slip ring assembly can momentarily short circuit the two slip rings. If this occurs, the fibrous shavings are instantaneously burnt out resulting in no damage to any components," said Nissan in a press release.

Are Nissan Ariyas reliable?

The Ariya does pretty well for satisfaction and reliability, although there isn't detailed reliability data yet. The EV6 and Ioniq 5 now have lower reliability ratings. The ID4 reliability really got pulled down.

What happened to the Nissan Ariya?

Unfortunately, the Ariya's arrival was delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related supply chain issues. Originally scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in 2021, front-wheel-drive versions will trickle in before the end of 2022 and all-wheel-drive models are scheduled to arrive in early 2023.

How many miles will the Nissan Ariya last?

With a multitude of options giving you up to 304 miles of range, just pack your bags, get in ARIYA, and go. You have a lot of options. You can charge ARIYA at home or at one of the many public stations, including fast chargers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
  • VIN: JN1BF0BA5PM
  • Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: My Ariya lane assist almost crashed me outside Philadelphia on I-76 (a notoriously congested and hazardous road). My hands got sweaty (I have sweaty palms, it's a medical condition) and it suddenly couldn't detect my hands. It quickly went into the "retake control" alert and I tried tapping the break to disengage it but that didn't do anything because it thought I wasn't driving the car so it kept the locked up lane assist on. I had to take my hands off the wheel, dry them, and then grab the wheel over and over until I found a dry enough spot for it to detect my hands. I figured out the fault, and why different people have different experiences. It's based on how moist your skin is and how sweaty your hands are. It took a couple trials to figure it out. I think it also uses back-force on the wheel to some extent, but mostly it's the capacitative sensor. I also tested if it would detect at different pressure levels when your hands are sweaty but that doesn't seem to matter. In addition turning the wheel ALSO doesn't help so you can be fighting for control of it when the system refuses to de-activate and is steering you into a bad place due to a left exit or something with traffic bearing down on you from 3 sides. This is extremely dangerous and using a system that fails IF YOUR HANDS AREN'T EXACTLY THE RIGHT LEVEL OF DRY/WET is absolutely something that needs to be recalled and replaced.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: JN1DF0BB6PM
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The car has a digital speedometer that can be switched from MPH to KPH through the settings (but it takes several steps) but one day my wife was driving and the units had switched and she didn't know so was not driving at the expected speed. I know of no "shortcut" to switch it quickly. I posted the question on an "Ariya forum" and at least 6 other owners said they experienced similar.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
  • VIN: JN1AF0BA8PM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Driving on the freeway this morning at 72% charge, approximately 5 miles into my 41 mile commute, message appeared on dash that battery charge was critically low, charge immediately. When this appeared the car was no longer showing the 72% charge, but 0% instead. The initial error was then replaced with "Warning Service EV System Power Reduced" and still showing 0% charge. Under reduced power I made it to a charging station 3 miles away and after a large number of attempts, finally got it to start charging. Immediately, the charge % returned to 70% and successfully charged to over 80%. To be safe I returned home instead of trying to finish my commute, as it was just past 3:00 AM and I didn't feel safe trying to complete the drive. I've also noticed since this has occurred the Nissan Connect app is no longer updating from the vehicle. If this is the same problem that others seem to have had, this becomes a highly dangerous situation both in the safety of the driver/passengers, but also everyone else on the road as the car goes to a reduced power mode!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-02
  • VIN: JN1BF0BA2PM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While driving on the highway on Dec.2 2023, my car suddenly displayed "Service EV Error" and "Reduced Power" warnings, along with the battery level to plummet from 89% to 0%. Upon noticing the warnings, I promptly activated hazard lights and maneuvered to the emergency lane. However, my attempts to maintain control were met with a gradual deceleration of the vehicle. Despite repeatedly pressing the acceleration pedal, the car failed to respond as expected, creating a hazardous situation on the high-speed highway. The urgency of the situation heightened as the reduced power hindered my ability to keep pace with traffic flow on the highway. The potential for a high-speed collision or other safety hazards increased, given the car's limited control and responsiveness. This occurred in an environment where other motorists were navigating the highway at significant speeds. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to address the issue, I reached a ChargePoint at a speed of 25-35 mph, but the connection failed, leaving the battery completely depleted. Seeking assistance from the dealership proved challenging initially, as they couldn't pinpoint the problem. With unresolved safety risks, the dealership recommended a tow. Unexpectedly, after restarting the car, the issues disappeared, and the battery level returned back to 89%. During a 250-mile drive post-incident, no further problems occurred. Days later, I brought the car to the service department for further inspection. They identified it as a junction box problem, ordered a replacement, and I am currently awaiting updates from them. They did not mention that the problem was reproduced by them but did mention they have some other customers encountered similar issue on their Ariyas.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-22
  • VIN: JN1BF0BA8PM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When I got in the vehicle after work on 11-22-23, it displayed a “EV System” error alert and “Power Reduced” alert. The vehicle would only accelerate extremely slowly and would only go about 25 MPH. Trying to go up hill to my house it would only go maximum of 10 MPH. I barely made it home. I left it at the dealership the next day (which was a national holiday) and they examined the car on 11-24-23 but could not find anything wrong. I have been told to drive the car and bring it back if the message occurs again. My EV battery seems to be no longer holding a good charge at this time. I am concerned about the safety of the vehicle at this time.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-14
  • VIN: JN1BF0BAXPM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Approximately 1.5 hours after taking possession of the vehicle, the Nissan Aria Evolve+ experienced a catastrophic brake system failure. Upon driving the vehicle home from the dealership (40 miles), the vehicle was parked inside the garage with the front facing the garage door. That is, it was backed in. 30 minutes later after arriving from the dealership, an attempt was made to drive the vehicle. As soon as it was put in drive, the vehicle started rolling forward even though the brake pedal was being depressed. Immediately it was clear that the brakes were not functioning. The vehicle continued heading towards the neighbor's house across the street. To avoid possible collusion vehicle was put in park and emergency brake engaged. This helped stop the vehicle. On the instrument panel, two different alerts were displayed while all this was occurring. The first one showed, "Warning, Malfunction See Owner's Manual." Then a second one was displayed, "Warning, e-Step system Failure. Press brake pedal to slow or stop." The following day, the vehicle was towed to dealership and they were able to replicate the issue. Service representative stated that Nissan would be notified so the can inspect the issue further.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-25
  • VIN: JN1BF0AA0PM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to address a pressing issue concerning the car I purchased from your dealership on January 21st of this year. Upon further investigation, I have discovered a discrepancy related to the labeling and assembly information of the vehicle, which has led to concerns regarding its eligibility for tax credit. According to the label affixed to the car, it states that the "Final Assembly Point" is in Los Angeles. However, upon verifying this information with the Energy Department of the United States, it was revealed that the car was actually assembled in Japan. I was taken aback by this revelation, as it seems that the information provided on the label does not align with the assembly location specified by the Energy Department. It is my understanding that in order to include "Final Assembly" in Los Angeles on the label, the car must first meet the criteria outlined by the Energy Department. Only then should this information be accurately reflected on the label. To validate this claim, I cross-checked with other automobile manufacturers such as Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, and Volvo, who have diligently adhered to the car's component origins and appropriately labeled their vehicles. Notably, all manufacturers, except for Volkswagen, indicate "Final Assembly" in the respective countries where the car was assembled, such as Japan for Toyota and South Korea for Kia and Hyundai. Volkswagen, on the other hand, solely states "Final Assembly" in North America; however, when cross-referencing with the Energy Department, it appears that the actual assembly takes place elsewhere. I reached out to Nissan Ariya support seeking clarification on this matter, and they confirmed that the labeling on the car is indeed accurate. This situation has left me questioning whether the Energy Department's information is correct or if the manufacturer's response is valid. Given the false information provided and the apparent deception employed to bolster ma

  • Summary: Car abruptly changed from mph to kmh. All safety aspects stay in mph, including speed limit and alert. So while on highway going 65mph, suddenly speed said 116kmh. But speed alerts were still saying “65”. Pro pilot on and car abruptly slowed down towards 65kmh on highway. Only way to change mph to kmh and back is to have car at complete stop, scroll to menu on steering wheel. Click it. Scroll to language. Click that. Click three more times. Reported to Nissan who said nothing wrong. Happened again today, not on Highway luckily. There are online posts of this happening with other Ariyas, but not on Highway. Again, if wanting to do this on purpose the car must be stopped and at least five explicit actions. Moreover, the safety measures on the car do not discriminate units, only numbers which makes this go from an annoyance to something that almost caused a high speed accident. Nissan has again been made aware, but lacks responsiveness.

Negative 2023 Nissan Ariya car reviews

  1. Adrian Powlowski 2024-11-04

The 2023 Nissan Ariya has some notable drawbacks in its air conditioning system and charging noise. During scorching Arizona temperatures, the air conditioning's lukewarm output may not meet cooling needs, causing discomfort during triple-digit heat. Additionally, some drivers have expressed concerns about the engine noise while charging, which may indicate potential mechanical issues. Despite these issues, Nissan has acknowledged them as common and is working on engineering efforts to address them. If you are experiencing these problems, it may be challenging to find a resolution without impacting your existing financial commitments.

  2. Waino Franecki 2024-09-29

I test drove a FWD version. Although it had some torque steer, it was still a fun ride. I was a bit surprised by the choice of FWD given the weight of the car, but it still handled well. Unfortunately, roof rails are not an option, but crossbars can be easily clipped onto the door frames. It's worth noting that there isn't a place to install a class II hitch. The interior design is simple, but functional. On the other hand, the exterior is quite stylish and eye-catching. Additionally, it boasts one of the best HUDs I've seen.

  3. Isom Kulas 2024-06-14

I really enjoyed driving this car, but unfortunately, I encountered an issue with it. The car was advertised to have a maximum charge of 204, but it only ever charged up to 190. Additionally, if any accessories were used, the maximum charge dropped to 180, which was disappointing for such an expensive car. I brought it in for service when it dropped to 120 at 44 degrees, but Nissan informed me that these numbers were normal for the car. It's also worth noting that there is no pop trunk button inside the car or automatic lift gate. Despite these issues, I decided to return the Ariya and purchase the Ford Mach-e, which I absolutely love.

Positive 2023 Nissan Ariya car reviews

  1. Alexie Koch 2025-01-03

We purchased the Evolve trim in June and I must say, I absolutely enjoy driving this car! It's incredibly smooth and has great acceleration when needed. Our model even has a wireless charger between the seats, which is a really convenient feature. The heads-up display is also a great addition that I've never had before. The car is very roomy, although the cargo space could be better, it's still adequate for general use. The car range is supposed to be 290, but when we first got it, it was showing 330! Of course, this will vary depending on the climate. We live in Arizona and because the AC was running constantly and the car had to keep the battery cooler when it was very hot outside, our actual range was probably around 250. However, I expect it to be around 300 in the late fall and winter here. So far, we've only charged it at home and it's been really easy. You can charge it at 220 or 110 and we just plug it right into a regular outlet. We have an Explorer if we drive out of town, but for now, it's just an around town car and that works great for us. Plus, combined with the solar plan we have (which is .05/KW on Peak), a 0-100 charge would only cost about $4.50. Overall, I highly recommend the Evolve trim!

  2. Colten Blick 2024-06-25

I'm so glad I made the switch to an electric car, especially since I can charge it at work. It's honestly the best vehicle I've ever owned! It's high-tech, yet still approachable, and the size, handling, and quickness are all fantastic. Plus, I personally love the style. I feel even more confident in my purchase knowing that I'm buying from the company that invented electric cars. They really know what they're doing when it comes to longevity, unlike some of their competitors.

  3. Dane Lemke 2024-05-11

Two core aspects of a car are very important to me: how it drives and how it looks. I'm happy to report that the Ariya drives like a champ, with fantastic acceleration and great cornering and steering feel. The looks are equally impressive, both inside and out, giving the car a luxury sporty feel. While charging may be a little slow, I find it no bother as I charge up at night. There's plenty of room for all my stuff, and I especially love the neat tray that comes out of the dash with the push of a button. Additionally, the car has what I call a safety shield, which provides some super caster features. I'm confident that you won't be disappointed with this car, as it is solid, sharp-looking, and packed with plenty of neat features.

  4. Armando Hand 2024-04-14

I've owned this car since October 2023 and I'm absolutely thrilled with it, especially compared to my previous Honda Clarity and Mustang Mach E. It's a well-built vehicle with a fast charging rate. I highly recommend it!

  5. Tanner Steuber 2024-04-13

Speedy, comfortable, quiet, elegant, and understated. We have 2 with different trim levels. My Premiere is exactly that. The Evolve is equally nice but a little less tech-heavy. However, for the difference in price, going up only makes it better and better!
