Jeep Commander problems
The Jeep Commander XK and XH (for diesel-powered export version) is a mid-size SUV that was manufactured from 2005 to 2010 by the Jeep division of the American manufacturer Chrysler.
Concept car
Jeep exhibited a concept car named Commander during the 1999 auto show circuit. The concept featured an experimental direct methanol fuel cell that produced electricity to charge a nickel–metal hydride battery pack. Full-time four-wheel drive was by a severe duty electric motor on each axle. The suspension could be raised 4 inches (102 mm) for traversing off-road purposes. The overall styling influenced the development of the third-generation Grand Cherokee that was at that time six years away. The concept car had the same height as production Grand Cherokees, but was about 8 inches (203 mm) wider. This allowed for an interior featuring an extra wide center console in the front and three bucket seats in the second row. The Commander concept had no relation to the production SUV.
Production
The production version of the Jeep Commander (XK and the diesel-powered XH export version) debuted at the 2005 New York Auto Show as a five- or seven-passenger counterpart of the Jeep Liberty. It was developed to target consumers who wanted a three-row SUV, but designed to be only two inches longer than the Jeep Grand Cherokee with its two-rows of seats as well as to be assembled on the same production line.
It shared its unibody construction, independent short/long arm front suspension and its 5-link live rear axle with the Grand Cherokee on which it was based. It featured an upright windshield and squared-off sides. Its stepped roof was disguised by the roof rack; a design similar to the GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT. This allowed the second and third-row seats to be mounted higher than the first-row seats.

Common Jeep Commander problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Jeep Commander cars, several common problems have been identified:
- Service 4WD System Warning Light On:
Owners have reported issues with the Service 4WD System warning light coming on. This problem can be related to various components within the 4WD system, such as sensors, actuators, or the transfer case. - Water Leak From Sunroof Drain Tube:
Another common problem is water leaking from the sunroof drain tube. This issue is often caused by blockages in the drain holes or tubes, leading to water entering the cabin. Clearing the blockages is essential to prevent this leakage. - Delayed Transmission Engagement:
Some owners have experienced delayed transmission engagement in their Jeep Commanders. This issue can be concerning as it affects the responsiveness and smoothness of gear shifts, potentially indicating transmission-related problems. - Exhaust Manifold Bolts Breaking:
A significant problem reported by owners is the breaking of exhaust manifold bolts. This issue can lead to exhaust leaks, affecting engine performance and emissions. Prompt repair is necessary to prevent further damage. - Erratic Idling:
Erratic idling, where the engine revs inconsistently instead of maintaining a steady speed, has been noted by owners. This problem is often linked to faulty spark plugs, requiring replacement with revised spark plugs to resolve the issue. - Heating Problems:
Owners have encountered issues with the heating controls working only on specific settings. This problem is commonly caused by a faulty heater blower resistor, which may need replacement to restore proper functionality. - Broken Door Handles:
The door handles inside the vehicle are prone to breaking, preventing the door from being opened from the inside. This issue is attributed to weak door handle construction, necessitating replacement of the door handle and housing to rectify the problem. - Leaking Sunroof:
Leaks from the sunroof have been reported, often due to blockages in the drain holes or tubes. Clearing these blockages is crucial to prevent water from seeping into the cabin, which can lead to interior damage.
These common problems with Jeep Commander cars highlight various issues that owners have faced, ranging from electrical and mechanical concerns to water leaks. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnosis and repair is essential to maintain the vehicle's performance and safety.
What was bad about the Jeep Commander?
Some common issues Commander owners report include broken exhaust manifold bolts, faulty 4WD system warning lights, and warm air from the instrument panel outlets.
What is the best year of the Jeep Commander?
Buy: 2010 Jeep Commander
The final model before discontinuation is the most reliable Jeep Commander year. It offers traditional Jeep styling, a potent 5.7 liter V8 engine, and top-tier off-road capabilities. Best of all, the 2010 Jeep Commander was spared from the annoying engine stall issues.
Why was the Jeep Commander unpopular?
The brick-like shape of the Commander resulted in brick-like aerodynamics and highway gas mileage clearly suffered for it, though the margin was narrower in the 4WD V8 models. And though some rivals were switching to six-speed autos, every Commander had a five-speed automatic.
How long can a Jeep Commander last?
The Jeep Commander has an average lifespan of 186,605 miles or about 9 years.

- Date Complaint: 2023-06-24
- VIN: 1J8HG58276C
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Transmission over temp is a never ending light that lights up daily. I've had 3 reprogrammed PCMs and the ECM replaced as well. The car was also reprogrammed at the dealership twice with the results the same. It will work for a couple days then right back to the original issue and including a few more. Recently the trans over temp came on and stalled in rush hour traffic. Resulting in a almost serious accident. Several attempts made to restart the car. Started and stalled immediately. After the 4th time and reving the engine very hard it stayed running. I've called the recall line on this and several other recalls (1 that was under warranty) with no resolution. This is now a safety issue for me and others on the road. This car is a lemon and should be taken off the road. I've waisted money at the dealership being charged over $300 each time to reprogrammed with no improvement. Bought 3 PCMs at $1200 each. I replaced almost everything under the hood and car with no positive results.

- Model: Jeep Commander 2008
- Report Received Date: 2014-09-17
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008 Chrysler 300 vehicles manufactured May 31, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Dodge Magnum vehicles manufactured May 23, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Dodge Charger vehicles manufactured May 24, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured April 3, 2007, to May 12, 2008, and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured March 21, 2007, to May 12, 2008. In the affected vehicles, the ignition key (FOBIK) may not return to the "ON" position after being rotated to the "START" position, instead sticking between the two positions. Potentially, while the vehicle is being driven, the ignition may inadvertently move through the "RUN" position to the "ACCESSORY" or "OFF" ignition position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition stays between "START" and "ON" positions it could cause loss of certain electrical functions. If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the "OFF" or "ACCESSORY" position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch and key FOBs, free of charge. The recall began August 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P57.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

I absolutely adore my '09 Commander (6 cylinder, 2WD) - I purchased it brand new on August 1, 2009. Although I have only driven 95,000 miles, it has given me very little trouble. I have yet to replace the original shocks/struts, but I have gone through two sets of Wranglers (I highly recommend switching to Michelin's). I have encountered a few issues with ABS sensors and check engine lights, as well as some exhaust problems. However, my only other problem is a faulty front windshield wiper fluid reservoir, which I have given up on fixing after paying twice to do so. ***Update 2/7/21*** The Commander is still going strong. I need new struts and shocks, but everything else is in great condition. I have driven about 112,000 miles now. Normally, I only drive about 8,000 miles a year, but due to Covid, I have been driving much less since I have been working from home.

Congratulations on your new vehicle! It sounds like you made a great choice. The seating seems to be very comfortable and spacious, especially with the reclining second row. The leather also sounds like it is of high quality and durable. The instrument panel seems to be well designed and easy to use. It's great to hear that the 4.7L engine has plenty of power and that the ride is smooth. Have fun testing it out in the snow this weekend!

Hey there! I also own a Jeep Commander 5.7 V8 Limited and I've found a cool trick to get cold air without using the air conditioner compressor and still maintain good fuel economy. If you have the dual control with a vent dial and fan speed dial, turn the right dial to auto and adjust the fan speed to your liking. Then, turn the temperature dials all the way down and voila! You'll get cool air without the air conditioner light coming on. I believe the dehumidifier is taking the moisture out of the air and pumping out cold air without using the compressor. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you! Best regards, Dr. Burke.

The interior design of this vehicle is excellent and provides a very comfortable ride. It can easily convert from 5 to 7 passenger seating, making it a versatile option. The 4.7L V8 flex-fuel engine provides plenty of power, and the flex fuel option can help you save money at the gas station. While the gas mileage drops about 25%, it's important to note that this is still a great option for those who prioritize comfort and power. One design flaw to be aware of is that it's easy to accidentally turn off the vehicle by striking the key with your knee. However, this is a minor issue that can be easily avoided with some awareness. Additionally, the Jeep is great off-road and the Quadratrac II works beautifully. Overall, this is a fantastic vehicle that provides a comfortable and versatile driving experience.

We previously owned a Jeep Liberty and had to upgrade in size. The Liberty was a great Jeep, so we decided to stay in the Jeep family. For a family of four, the Commander has been awesome. The kids love riding in the third row because their feet reach the floor - only suitable for little ones because there's no leg room. The front is very spacious and controls are easily accessible to both the driver and passenger. I'm not too bothered that there isn't much storage behind the third row when it's up, but it wasn't a deal breaker by any means. We're really excited for our road trip next month because we'll have plenty of room for comfort and storage. Overall, we're extremely happy with this vehicle.

I had the opportunity to drive this car for a week during my west coast trip. Unfortunately, I found the driving experience to be quite unpleasant. Firstly, the base V6 engine's acceleration was very poor, which made merging onto the crowded California highways a downright scary experience. With only 200 horsepower, the engine felt inadequate for such a big SUV. Secondly, the car's design did not take visibility into account. Even without passengers, there were large blind spots on both sides, making lane changes a harrowing experience. With passengers, it was nearly impossible to check for oncoming cars when attempting to change lanes. Overall, I did not enjoy driving this car.

We have owned this vehicle for a year now, and unfortunately, we have experienced several issues with it. Despite numerous trips to the shop, the problems persist, including stalling while in motion, which has caused some concern. We have also encountered issues with wind noise, water leaks, and the AC making unpleasant sounds. Additionally, there have been several recalls and a slow response throttle. We are aware that other owners of this car have faced similar problems, and we are hopeful that the ongoing investigation by NHTSA will lead to a resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the non-hemi V8 my wife purchased back in 2006. The engine was incredibly strong and the ride was very smooth and quiet. The exterior had a solid and distinguishable look, but the interior was a bit bland with too much plastic. Unfortunately, we had to get rid of it due to its poor gas consumption. Even on all highway cruising trips, we only got 14 miles to the gallon at best, and with such a small 18-gallon gas tank, we found ourselves filling up 2-3 times a week! We recently traded it in for a brand new Hyundai Sonata Limited V6, which we're really enjoying. Thanks for listening!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on my recent switch from a Toyota to a Jeep. While the Jeep has been reliable and steady through the first 2000 miles, I do feel that there is room for improvement. In my opinion, the vehicle would benefit from having seating for five instead of seven, as it would improve the ergonomics of the interior. I also wonder why Jeep wouldn't make this their full-size vehicle and make it world-class, rather than competing directly with the Grand Cherokee and keeping the Durango/Aspen. Overall, I think there is potential for the Jeep to be even better and I look forward to seeing what improvements they make in the future.

My husband and I both own Jeeps - a 2008 Commander and a 2006 model - and we've been experiencing similar issues. We've had to replace the starter, brakes, and wheel bearings, and my radio and passenger side window only work intermittently. To make matters worse, both vehicles have been leaking water onto the front floorboards. As longtime Jeep enthusiasts, we're starting to question whether the love of Jeeps is worth the frustration of dealing with these design flaws. We hope that Chrysler will prioritize quality over cost-cutting measures, especially given the price we pay for these vehicles.
