2007 Jeep Commander problems
The Jeep Commander XK and XH (for diesel-powered export version) is a mid-size SUV that was manufactured from 2005 to 2010 by the Jeep division of the American manufacturer Chrysler.
Concept car
Jeep exhibited a concept car named Commander during the 1999 auto show circuit. The concept featured an experimental direct methanol fuel cell that produced electricity to charge a nickel–metal hydride battery pack. Full-time four-wheel drive was by a severe duty electric motor on each axle. The suspension could be raised 4 inches (102 mm) for traversing off-road purposes. The overall styling influenced the development of the third-generation Grand Cherokee that was at that time six years away. The concept car had the same height as production Grand Cherokees, but was about 8 inches (203 mm) wider. This allowed for an interior featuring an extra wide center console in the front and three bucket seats in the second row. The Commander concept had no relation to the production SUV.
Production
The production version of the Jeep Commander (XK and the diesel-powered XH export version) debuted at the 2005 New York Auto Show as a five- or seven-passenger counterpart of the Jeep Liberty. It was developed to target consumers who wanted a three-row SUV, but designed to be only two inches longer than the Jeep Grand Cherokee with its two-rows of seats as well as to be assembled on the same production line.
It shared its unibody construction, independent short/long arm front suspension and its 5-link live rear axle with the Grand Cherokee on which it was based. It featured an upright windshield and squared-off sides. Its stepped roof was disguised by the roof rack; a design similar to the GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT. This allowed the second and third-row seats to be mounted higher than the first-row seats.

Common 2007 Jeep Commander problems
The 2007 Jeep Commander is known for several common problems, which are primarily related to the sunroof, exhaust system, 4WD system, manual temperature control, and transmission.
- Exhaust Leaks: Some 2006-2010 Jeep Commander units with 3.7 V6 and 4.7 V8 engines have been prone to exhaust leaks. Owners describe hearing a ticking noise coming from the exhaust manifold and later discovering damaged exhaust manifold bolts. Replacing the faulty exhaust manifold gaskets and bolts appeared to solve the issue on most affected vehicles.
- 4WD System Warning Light: Some owners of the 2006-2010 Jeep Commanders have reported cases of the service 4WD system warning light suddenly activating even if there are no fault codes stored in the final drive control module (FDCM). A software update for the vehicle’s FDCM corrected the issue on most affected vehicles.
- Manual Temperature Control Malfunction: Several owners of 2006-2010 Jeep Commanders have reported cases of manual temperature control malfunction. Drivers of affected vehicles have noticed warm air coming through the instrument panel outlets even after selecting the cold setting. Some mechanics recommend installing a revised air distribution housing to solve this issue.
- Delayed Transmission Engagement: Some units from the 2006-2009 model years of the Jeep Commander may exhibit delayed transmission engagement because of a faulty internal cooler return filter. Cooler filters with the “AB” suffix in the part number may need to be replaced to solve the issue.
- Electrical Problems: If you’re planning to buy a 2008 Jeep Commander, you may want to check the vehicle for electrical problems. Owners have reported issues with their radio, faulty backup sensors, and malfunctioning dash gauges for no reason. Although some of these issues are minor, they shouldn’t be ignored. Have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic right away to accurately diagnose your Jeep Commander’s interior components.
In conclusion, the 2007 Jeep Commander is known for several common problems, including sunroof leaks, exhaust leaks, 4WD system warning light issues, manual temperature control malfunctions, delayed transmission engagement, and electrical problems. These issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs, but it's essential to be aware of them before purchasing a used Jeep Commander.

Why was the Jeep Commander unpopular?
The Commander's extra 300 pounds of curb weight over the Grand also affected fuel economy and blunted performance. These were heavy trucks – the base 2WD Commander weighed around 4500 pounds, 4WD adding 200 and the top-spec Limited 4WD topping out at over 5000 pounds.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-10
- VIN: 1J8HG48K07C
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Unknown. While my vehicle is set on cruise control and the weather is over 50 degrees or the air is running my cruise control will shut off. Warning lights abs, esp bas, & stability control will come on, then my cruise control won’t work anymore. Now just this morning going up a hill my car wouldn’t go pass 20 mph while my foot was to the floor basically. Then almost to the top of the hill it took off. The rmps went high Jeep shifted to next gear. Of course took my foot off petal and pushed brakes slightly. As slowing down it started shifting hard with high rmps still. I have done a new tune up and new transmission within the last 6 months. Before the new transmutation it was still doing this. The reason to replace the transmission was my Jeep just stopped completely moving. I don’t have the money to keep taking my Jeep back to the dealership for them to keep telling me they don’t know the problem. If nothing gets done about this sadly I will have to get rid of it. The cruise accrues when I’m on the highway going 60 to 65 mps. The shifting problem happen in town. Which both issues could cause a serious car wreck and harm to others and my self.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-26
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1J8HG48PX7C
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Heat shield on the muffler system. I was towing a boat up north and started to smell a burning smell. At first I thought it was an electrical issue, but couldn't identify anything. So I drove another 3 to 4 miles and the back floor boards was smoking filling the car with smoke. I pulled over and the carpet was melting from the heat of the muffler/exhaust under the back seat. When it was inspected the heat shield was not over the area that almost caught fire. This is an issue that Jeep is more than aware of and it's an issue that only happens when these vehicles are towing. They run extremely hot towing and the heat shield is defective. Their are other's that have had this happen and there's no recall! My car is equipped with tow package too and it was turned on before it's even a question. I got a call about a year ago about a family friend was towing a pop up camper and their commander caught on fire and was a total loss! Thank God no one was injured. There needs to be an investigation with people who have commander's.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-01
- VIN: 1J8HG48PX7C
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My car will act like it's out of gas/convulsions, dies suddenly, and acts like it's going to die when driving. Check engine light has come on sometimes. I have only had the vehicle around one year and have had it worked on 4 times for the issue. Still isn't fully resolved. It's was the obvious issue from the start so probably an issue before I bought the vehicle. I was referred to the dealership and they quoted me 600 just for the inspection. I just paid 3000 dollars to have it fixed. Still not fixes.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-19
- VIN: 1J8HG58N07C
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I have a jeep commander 2007 limited. According to your recall dates my VIN number doesn’t fall within those dates for my car to have the recall. Although my jeep is completely stallling out while driving 69 mph, I mean loss of all electrical inside my jeep. Power steering fails, engine shuts off, I am lucky enough that my brakes still work but who is to say that won’t happen again. So when looking my VIN number up seeing that this is ONE of the recalls, my VIN number ISNT part of the vehicles that was affected by the recall but I’m still encountering the SAME issue as the recall. I’ve taken it to my mechanic he cannot seem to find the problem. I need help I just bought this car! It’s our family car so it’s not only affecting me it’s my entire family. My husband, my two year older and my elderly parents.

I START MY 2007 JEEP COMMANDER, I GET TO WHERE I AM GOING, WHEN I GO TO RESTART MY VEHICLE IT SOMETIMES DOESN'T WANT TO START. IT WILL CRANK OVER JUST REFUSES TO START. I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE MECHANICS LOOK AT MY JEEP AND NO ONE CAN FIGURE OUT REASONING TO THIS INTERMITTENT STARTING ISSUE. I HAVE PUT SO MUCH MONEY AND WORK INTO MY JEEP FOR IT TO KEEP DOING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LAST MECHANIC I TOOK IT TOO SEEN CODE ERROR IN THE DISPLAY WINDOW ON DASH 'TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP' WHEN HE HAD TRIED TO START IT. IT DOES NOT DO THIS EVERY TIME THE WILL BE DAYS IT CONTINUOUSLY STARTS EVERY TIME THEN THERE ARE DAYS THAT IT'S INTERMITTENT, AND DAYS IT WILL NOT START AT ALL. THE MECHANIC STARTING LOOKIN ON JEEP FORUMS ABOUT THIS ISSUE THERE ARE TONS OF REPORTS OF THE SAME ISSUE BUT NO SOLUTION. MY MECHANIC SAID JEEP IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT THERE IS NO RECALLS ON THIS ISSUE. HE SAID HE BELIEVES IT IS A PROGRAMMING ISSUE THE CAR THINKS THE TRANSMISSION IS OVER TEMP SO IT SENDS SIGNAL TO THE ENGINE THAT IT'S TOO HOT AND THE ENGINE SENDS SIGNAL TO THE FUEL PUMP THAT THERE IS A TEMPERATURE ISSUE DO NOT TURN ON. WHEN IT CRANKS OVER IT ACTS AS IF IT ISN'T GETTING ANY FUEL AT ALL. I HAVE PURCHASED A NEW FUEL PUMP AND SOME OTHER PARTS THE ISSUE IS HAPPENING. I BOUGHT THE JEEP IN APRIL OF 2020 OFF OF ANOTHER OWNER, THE ISSUE DIDN'T START WITH ME UNTIL JANUARY OF 2021, THE PREVIOUS OWNER MENTIONED ANYTHING ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO THEM WHEN I ASKED THEM. 2007 Jeep Commander recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2007 Jeep Commander.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
- Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.
- Manufacturer: ROCK KRAWLER/PURE PERFORMANCE GROUP, INC
- Components: SUSPENSION

THESE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS WERE PRODUCED WITH GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS INSTEAD OF THE PROPER GRADE 5 CARRIAGE BOLTS. THE IMPROPER GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS COULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF CLAMPING FORCE FOR THE BOTTOM STRUT FORK.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF EFFECTIVE LIFT AND LOWERING OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLE, POSSIBLY CREATING THE DRIVER TO PANIC WHICH COULD POSSIBLY LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: ROCK KRAWLER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND PROVIDE A FREE REMEDY. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 15. 2008. ALL THE AFFECTED UNTITS HAVE BEEN REMEDIED. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ROCK KRAWLER AT 1-518-270-9822.

Congratulations on your new vehicle! It sounds like you made a great choice. The seating seems to be very comfortable and spacious, especially with the reclining second row. The leather also sounds like it is of high quality and durable. The instrument panel seems to be well designed and easy to use. It's great to hear that the 4.7L engine has plenty of power and that the ride is smooth. Have fun testing it out in the snow this weekend!

The interior design of this vehicle is excellent and provides a very comfortable ride. It can easily convert from 5 to 7 passenger seating, making it a versatile option. The 4.7L V8 flex-fuel engine provides plenty of power, and the flex fuel option can help you save money at the gas station. While the gas mileage drops about 25%, it's important to note that this is still a great option for those who prioritize comfort and power. One design flaw to be aware of is that it's easy to accidentally turn off the vehicle by striking the key with your knee. However, this is a minor issue that can be easily avoided with some awareness. Additionally, the Jeep is great off-road and the Quadratrac II works beautifully. Overall, this is a fantastic vehicle that provides a comfortable and versatile driving experience.

We got the Limited with the 5.7 Hemi and all the bells and whistles. So far, we have been very pleased. This truck is great and the third row seats, although cramped for adults, really serve our family of 5 well. The powertrain is awesome, although the fuel economy is definitely poor (as we knew before the purchase). The towing abilities are also well appreciated.

I purchased this vehicle last January. It's great in the snow and very comfortable when it's cold outside. The 4-wheel drive is very nice. I would buy it again. I gave this to a friend last winter and they are very happy with it, continuing to drive it the way we did.

After addressing some minor issues such as the windshield washer, this Jeep proved to be a very comfortable ride. It felt like a luxury SUV, but with a smaller exterior.

This vehicle has experienced several issues, including problems with the transfer case, transmission, and water pump. Additionally, the sunroof leaks during car washes, and the doors collect water, which can be inconvenient. The windows also have a tendency to roll down unexpectedly. These issues have made it difficult to trade the vehicle without rolling over a significant amount of debt. However, it is important to note that these problems are not indicative of all Jeeps, and it is possible to find a reliable one with proper research and maintenance.

I bought this car used in 2010 with 50,000 miles. Unfortunately, I had some issues with it such as the radiator cooling fans going out one month after I bought it and the shifter breaking, which cost me $200 dollars to fix. I also took it off-roading and nearly destroyed the front fender. Additionally, I hit a patch of snow at 25 mph and slid all 4 wheels spinning for 90 feet through traffic, which blew the rear strut assembly. On top of that, I only got 17 mpg on average, costing me almost $6000 dollars a year in gas. Based on my experience, I would recommend finding an older Cherokee or Grand Cherokee and sticking with that. This car was a nightmare for me and my family, and we are glad to be trading it in for a Dodge. Good riddance!

My wife and I confidently purchased a Jeep Commander Rocky Mount, attracted by its stylish appearance and lifetime warranty. However, we encountered an issue with a loud whistling noise emanating from the dash, which persisted even after three visits to the dealer. Additionally, we experienced a problem with the sunroof opening itself back up when attempting to close the front two windows. Despite the dealer's inability to fix these issues, we are confident in our decision to pursue legal action to force them to buy back the vehicle. We strongly advise against purchasing this car.

I bought my Jeep when it was 2 years old with 38,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, it was already out of warranty, which made things difficult. Just two weeks after purchasing it, I had to replace my shifter bezel, which cost me $500. I've had some trouble with the starter, which has left me stranded five times. To make matters worse, I had to replace the starter again just one year later. Despite my troubles, I haven't received much help from Chrysler. Each time I take it to a Jeep dealer, they tell me that my car has a lot of problems. Unfortunately, each fix costs me at least $400. I'm planning on getting rid of it soon, and I'm really disappointed in Chrysler.

I really appreciate the sturdy feel of my Jeep, and the gas mileage is what I expected for a vehicle with a V8 Hemi. I absolutely love the way it looks, and the 4X4 capabilities are fantastic. It rides smoothly and quietly, and the stereo sounds amazing. Although the sun roof does leak, I live in SoCal so it's not too much of an issue. The only downside has been some electrical problems, such as stalling on the freeway and intermittent starting issues, as well as the high cost of replacement parts. I'm still deciding whether to sell it or keep it, but I'm hopeful that the last 7 trips to the Jeep dealer have resolved all the issues.
