2013 Chrysler 200 problems
The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.
The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.
First generation (2011)
The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.
The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.
The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.
The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.
According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.
In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- VIN: 1C3CCBBB0DN
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: While driving, the safety mechanism on my driver's seat headrest malfunctioned and launched forward. I was distracted for a minute after while I tried to figure out what just happened. At first I thought someone rear ended me until I saw there was no one behind me. I saw what happened to the headrest after I pulled into a gas station. I didn't take it to a mechanic because they would've wanted over $700 to replace it, which I can't afford. I replaced it myself with a headrest I bought on EBay. I still have the malfunctioned headrest because I'm not sure at this point what to do with it. There was no prior warning of any kind.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-09
- VIN: 1C3CCBCG4DN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The Active Headrest Restraint (AHR) failed. It deployed without cause and was inspected by the dealer. The issue was a small piece of plastic used in the manufacturing process. My wife was driving the car and out of nowhere a loud noise and she was struck in the back of the head. Luckily, she was driving at a slower speed and no other cars were around, she nearly went completely into the other lane. Had other cars been on the road, there would have been an accident. We took the car to the dealership when it happened with the passenger headrest a couple of years ago and the guy told us he ordered the parts to fix it, but it would take six months. We went back and he no longer works there an never ordered any parts. Since only my wife drives this car, we just let it go about the passenger headrest and moved on. I believe this is in regards to recalls S61 & T56. Both headrests are deployed and cannot be reset. To make matters worse, now the airbag warning light is illuminated at all times. An issue with airbags can be very serious and very dangerous if not addressed. After speaking on the phone with FCA customer care, I was told this was fixed in 2014 (2-3 years before the recall was issued) & that it was out of warranty. I do not believe it was fixed, maybe someone inspected the car, but it was not repaired. The dealer wants to charge me $1,000 to replace the headrests and that is something I cannot do. The recall site states "Safety recalls include any problem encountered with an FCA US LLC product related to the safe operation of the vehicle or the safety of the occupants. FCA US LLC will correct the problem, at no charge, even if the vehicle is out of warranty and you are not the original owner." this clearly does not matter to Chrysler. I have no other choice but to drive the vehicle with the airbag warnings on. I am hoping you can help. This is my last resort. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer and there were no warning lights prior to this.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-29
- VIN: 1C3BCBFG9DN
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Coming to a stop at a red light or stop sign card jerks starters then shuts down. Almost got in an accident two or three times because of this safety situation I am having with the drivetrain and the engine stall. This happens all the time from the time I purchased the vehicle.

Congratulations on your purchase of a second '13 Limited hard top convertible! These cars truly offer unbeatable value on the used car market. It's great to hear that you're enjoying the ample power from the V6 engine and the amazing feat of engineering that is the hardtop, which your nephew even mistook for a Transformer! Additionally, it's worth noting that any hard top unit comes fully loaded as standard. Your Dark Blue Limited with 65k miles purchased in Oct '18 for $12k and your White one with a small roof leak and 78k miles purchased in Oct '19 for a paltry $7k are both fantastic deals. It's clear that these cars are highly underrated and priced accordingly. The cost of replacing the seal was only $600, and now the top is like new! I hope you're able to complete your collection with a '14 Gold with low miles. It's understandable that you prefer the V6 engine for its practicality in terms of mileage and power combination. With low 20s MPG in town and 31MPG Hwy, it's a great choice. It's impressive that you were able to increase the highway MPG to 33 with the ODB Auto-tuner you recently added. It's also interesting to hear that you were able to shut off the traction control by disconnecting the brake sending unit, although it's important to note that traction control is a safety feature that should not be disabled. It's great to hear that you've had no problems with either car and that you've replaced the tires with some Kuhmos from tire rack, which you love and are comparatively cheap. The only downside you've mentioned is the delay in downshifting manually, but overall it sounds like you're very happy with your purchases! The Mazda CX-9 Sport shifter responds instantaneously, which may take some getting used to. One minor issue is that the top cannot be activated at speeds below 1MPH. This is likely due to the back half of the car opening up when moving the top, which could cause belongings to fly away even at low speeds. However, this is a minor inconvenience compared to the practicality of the car. The cruise control sometimes malfunctions, but this is likely a computer issue. The dealer took three weeks to get the main roof seal, possibly due to the Wuhan flu shutdown, but they did a great job on it. It's worth noting that finding a Bodyshop or convertible shop to handle hard top issues may be difficult, but the dealer is always an option. On the bright side, the car is very comfortable to drive and ride in, even for someone who is 6'2I always make sure that my future phone upgrades have a headphone jack as a backup, although it's becoming increasingly difficult to find. The sound system in the Limited is definitely worthy of a convertible. I can't even consider turning it up loud without the top down. I still prefer my TomTom over the built-in GPS (and especially the expensive map updates!), but since I bought it used, I didn't pay extra for that feature anyway. I almost hesitate to tell people how good of a deal these cars are on the used market. I might even want to snag a few more for my family. Update 1 (2022): on the high mileage unit (90k), I had to replace an ABS sensor. On the lower mileage unit (79k), which is stored a lot, I'm replacing an O2 sensor. You'd never guess that an OEM Denso O2 sensor is only $37, easily accessible, and just a twist of the wrench, when the dealer asks $595 to fix it, plus $150 for diagnostics! Also, there is an intermittent ABS sensor fault on the low mileage unit as well. I still love both cars exceedingly!

I used to own a silver/grey 2008 Chrysler Sebring Touring Hardtop convertible (with most of the Limited's options). Upgrading to a red/cream 2013 200 Limited Hardtop convertible was a breeze since all controls and features are basically the same. However, the 200's materials are much nicer than the previous Sebring's plastic finishes. The 200's 3.6 Pentastar/6 speed tranny combination (with autostick) was a pleasant surprise compared to the previous 2.7/4 speed tranny combination from 2008. No more gear hunting while on hilly terrain with the 200. The entertainment/gps system was also slightly improved and unlike the manufacturers constant need to further complicate infotainment systems (I have a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica that has a HUGE manual needed to find everything for its infotainment system), the 730 stereo has enough fun features without being overly complicated. The 200 also rides quieter. The cherry red exterior and cream interior is a striking color combination, and looks nicer than most other convertibles. The hardtop feature of the convertible is what wins with me due to better security, quieter ride, and the ability to drive in the winter without worries of the snow load during storms (only the Volvo and VW Eos had this feature but like the 200 convertible, they also no longer manufacture a hardtop convertible anymore).... otherwise, I'd have looked at the Mustang or Camaro convertible. Unfortunately, Chrysler stopped making these Hardtop convertibles in 2015.... so I bought this used 2013 to last me another 15 years as there is nothing being sold now or on the horizon that compares. The 2013 is the epitome of the three and a half generations of the Sebring/200 convertibles (1996-2014), and unless Chrysler starts making another one..... all I can say to the person looking for a good used convertible, is to buy a good example of a 2013/2014 200 Limited or S Hardtop convertible. You'll be glad you got an extended bumper to bumper warranty for peace of mind. I purchased this hardtop convertible with 96,250 miles for $13,250, which included a 5-year/60,000-mile

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 2013 at a repo sale and it has been a great investment. With 155,000 miles on it, the only repair I've had to make was replacing the thermostat housing at 120,000 miles. Overall, it's been a fantastic car for the price. The only downside is the fuel mileage, but I've taken it coast to coast several times and it's handled everything from mountains to flat terrain, and hot to cold weather. I would definitely buy this car again!

I have owned three Chryslers, two Sebrings and my current car. Although I love the car itself, I paid more than it was worth. Unfortunately, I have not had heat for the past year and a half, and now that it is getting cold again, I am left with nothing but cold air. I need to replace the heater core, which is not expensive, but the labor is since it is a 12-hour or two-day job. As a result, I am now in the market for a new car. However, this time I am looking for a different brand.

I bought my 200 on 2/2/13 and it's not a bad car at all. It has a lot of options and so far, I haven't had any problems with it. However, it only has 3750 miles on it and the 4-cylinder engine's gas mileage is a little disappointing. I wish it was a little wider, but overall, it's a good car. I traded my 2011 Mitsubishi Galant, which had the same size engine, and got 100 miles more on a tank of fuel even though it had the same size tank. If you're going to buy a 200, I recommend getting the V6. Sometimes I think I should have kept my Galant, but only time will tell. It's too early to complain, and if I have any issues with the car, I will let everyone know about it. Also, watch out for the blind spots.

I have the 2.4L Sedan. The transmission shifts extremely rough and slips a lot. The fuel economy is average, with 14 mpg around town and around 21 with cruise control going about 60 mph. Although it is slow and heavy, it does handle very well. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing another Chrysler 200.

My journey with this vehicle started off on a positive note. However, after about a year, I began to experience some issues. Unfortunately, I had to replace the TPM and encountered several other problems under the hood. Due to the fact that it is a Chrysler, the parts are quite expensive, and the model itself is not very reliable. The battery placement is also quite inconvenient, and it is recommended to take the car to a mechanic for repairs. Although it was my first car and I have a sentimental attachment to it, I believe that for the price I paid, I could have purchased a better car. It was not worth the investment. UPDATE: I was involved in a total loss accident and, to be honest, I am relieved. This particular version of the car was not up to par.

The 2013 Chrysler 200 convertible was purchased from Myrtle Beach Chrysler Jeep for $35,000, including taxes. However, due to a business need for an SUV, the car was sold back to the dealership only six weeks later. Myrtle Beach Chrysler Jeep offered $24,000 for the car, which was declined. After taking the car to Toyota, they offered $14,000 for it. Despite the low mileage, the car was not worth much. Myrtle Beach Chrysler Jeep eventually offered $17,000 for the car, but only because they were the original seller. The car lacked navigation and USB for iPod, and was not fuel-efficient. Overall, it was a regrettable purchase.
