The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.

The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.

The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

Common 2003 Hyundai Tiburon problems

The Hyundai Tiburon, produced between 1996 and 2008, is known for its reliability, with few major issues to worry about, especially considering its age. However, as with any car, certain common problems can arise, particularly in older models or those with high mileage.

  • Timing Belt Failure: One of the most common issues with the Hyundai Tiburon is the timing belt, which is prone to snapping . This can cause significant damage to the engine, as it is an interference engine. To avoid this problem, it is recommended to replace the timing belt every 100,000 kilometers or 60,000 miles .
  • Sensor Failure: Over time, various sensors in the Tiburon, such as the O2 sensors, throttle position sensor, oil pressure sensor, and MAF sensor, may fail and need replacement .
  • Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter: The fuel pump and fuel filter, located underneath the rear seats, may require replacement, especially in high-mileage vehicles . Although these components are often said to last the life of the car, many owners report needing to replace them .
  • Charcoal Canister Issues: The charcoal canister, responsible for preventing gasoline fumes from escaping the fuel tank, can cause problems, particularly when the gas tank stops allowing the car to fill up properly .
  • Clutch Problems: The clutch system in the Tiburon has been reported to have issues, with complaints about slipping, going out, and wearing out.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems, including issues with the signal light not blinking, have been reported in the 2003 Tiburon.
  • Body and Transmission Issues: Owners have reported problems with the body and transmission in various Tiburon models.

In general, the Hyundai Tiburon is considered a reliable vehicle, with most issues arising from the natural wear and tear that comes with age and high mileage. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of worn-out parts can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Positive 2003 Hyundai Tiburon car reviews

This car is great! You have a lot of options to choose from, including the Mazda Miyata, Subaru WRX & RS, and others. What's even better is that the price is unbeatable, and it comes with all the standard features you need. The 10-year/100,000-mile warranty is also a huge plus. The A/C is really cold, and the car handles great, providing a nice stable ride. The 4-cylinder engine has enough power for most drivers, and the gear ratio of the 5-speed manual is perfect for all-around driving. If you're looking for extra pep, you may want to consider the 6-cylinder, but the 4-cylinder is more than enough for city and highway merging. The car is also very comfortable and quiet for long rides, and there's plenty of storage with the seats folded. You can expect around 29 combined miles per gallon, which is great. The steering is nice and tight, and the braking is good.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 03 tib. I bought it back in late 05 with 64,000 miles and it's been a great car overall. The only issues I've had were with the window motor on the driver's side, which happened twice, and the passenger side not unlocking. But those were both cheap and easy fixes. Last summer, my AC was leaking somewhere, but I found that if I fill it up, it lasts me through the summer. I recently replaced the belts and other related parts at 108,000 miles, but other than feeling like the transmission is going slowly, I haven't had any other issues. Thanks for listening!

I've owned this car since it was new and it has been a reliable companion throughout the years. With 174,000 miles on it, I've only had to replace two water pumps, two timing belts, one set of rotors, and three sets of tires. While the AC system did have some issues, the regional manager approved a full replacement free of charge at 130,000 miles after a few visits. The paint could be better, but overall, I got a great deal on this car and it has served me very well. I've driven it all over the state in all kinds of weather conditions, from snow to rain to hot temperatures, and it has never let me down. Unfortunately, I have to let it go now as it doesn't fit my growing family's needs. I will definitely miss my tiburon.

Handling is great and pick-up is even better!

I'm so glad to hear that you love this car! It definitely turns a lot of heads. While the back seat may be a little tight, it's great to hear that it doesn't bother you since you won't be sitting in it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
