2004 Hyundai Tiburon problems
The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.
The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.
The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

Common 2004 Hyundai Tiburon problems
The Hyundai Tiburon, particularly the 2004 model, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. While the car is generally considered reliable, some issues tend to arise due to its age and usage.
- Clutch problems: Clutch issues, such as slipping, going out, or wearing out, have been reported in various Tiburon models, including the 2004, 2006, and 2008 models. These issues may require clutch replacement or other repairs.
- Body and paint problems: Some owners have reported fading paint on the gas cap and fender gills, as well as faded and scratched-out rear spoilers. These issues may be covered under the paint warranty, but they can still be a concern for potential buyers.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-06-20
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: CLUTCH RECALL, POWERTRAIN RECALL, MASTER CYLINDER RECALL, SLAVE CYLINDER RECALL. WHEN DRIVING MY CAR AFTER A WEEK OF PURCHASING THE CAR I PUSHED THE CLUTCH PEDAL TO THE FLOOR TO SHIFT, AND THE PEDAL DID NOT COME BACK UP. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO BRING IT BACK UP TO SHIFT IT FINALLY CAME BACK. WHEN SHIFTING AGAIN THE CAR DIED INSTANTLY, AND AFTER THE CAR WAS OFF I COULD SHIFT TO ANY GEARS. WHEN TURNING THE CAR BACK ON IN NEUTRAL THE CAR TURNED ON, BUT WOULD NOT SHIFT TO FIRST IT WOULD PUSH ITSELF FORWARD AND DIE. TRYING TO START THE CAR IN FIRST WOULD TAKE OFF BUT YOU COULD ONLY PUT IT BACK TO NEUTRAL. AFTER TAKING IT TO SEVERAL MECHANICS I CHANGED THE SLAVE AND MASTER CYLINDER, AND NOTHING HAPPENED. TO MY SURPRISE THE CLUTCH AND DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL, CLUTCH, SHIFT FORK WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THEY WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-05-03
- VIN: KMHHN65F74U
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I HAVE HAD A BRAKE LINE REPLACED BECAUSE ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC, THE POOR DESIGN ALLOWS FOR THE BRAKE LINE TO RUB AGAINST THE SHOCK WHICH EVENTUALLY WEARS A HOLE THROUGH THE BRAKE LINE. I'VE HAD THREE SEPARATE INCIDENTS WHERE MY BRAKE PEDAL HAS GONE COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. I'VE HAD TO USE MY EMERGENCY HAND BRAKE TO KEEP ME FROM CRASHING IN EACH INSTANCE. I WORK IN THE QUALITY FIELD AND TRULY UNDERSTAND DEFECT IN DESIGN OVER WEAR AND TEAR. BRAKE LINES SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE REPLACED EVERY YEAR BECAUSE OF DEFECTIVE DESIGN. I AM SURE THERE HAVE EVEN SERIOUS ACCIDENTS AND PERHAPS I JURIES AND FATALITIES BECAUSE OF THIS DESIGN. AGAIN, I WORK IN TOY SAFETY AND QUALITY AND UNDERSTAND THAT ALTHOUGH A PRODUCT MIGHT COMPLY WITH EXISTING REGULATIONS, STILL BE A HAZARD TO A USER. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: KMHHN65F34U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: HYUNDAI KNOW ABOUT AN ISSUE WITH THEIR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AFFECTING THE AIR CONDITIONING ON THEIR TIBURONS, BUT HAVE DONE NOTHING ABOUT IT. IT IS WHEN YOU SELECT HIGHER SPEEDS OF A/C, THE CONNECTOR BEHIND THE DASHBOARD HEATS UP SO MUCH, IT MELTS THE CONNECTOR AND CAUSES THE A/C TO FAIL. HYUNDAI DOESN'T COVER THIS UNDER WARRANTY OR RECALL. THEY MAKE ME BUY ANOTHER SWITCH. BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS, CAUSING THE REPLACEMENT TO FAIL AS WELL. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

BOTH MY TIBURON, AND MY MOTHER'S SONATA HAD THE AIRBAG LIGHT STEADILY ON. I WAS ABLE TO FIX HERS BY ADJUSTING A FEW CORDS, MINE TO NO AVAIL. I HAVE BEEN TOLD NOT TO GET IT DIAGNOSED BECAUSE PROBLEM RETURNS. *TR
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-11-05
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY
- Summary: ALMOST RIGHT AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, I STARTED EXPERIENCING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THE ALARM SYSTEM WOULD RANDOMLY GO OFF AND SOMETIMES EVEN LOCK THE DOORS OF THE CAR ON IT'S OWN. WHETHER THE CAR WAS RUNNING OR NOT, WINDOWS OPEN OR SHUT, DID NOT MATTER. LATER THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR BURNED OUT SO ONLY THE FASTEST SETTING WORKS AND ONLY WHEN I HOLD THE KNOB UP FOR THE ONE TIME WIPE. THE WINDOW MOTOR WENT OUT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AS WELL. IF YOU WERE TO SLAM OR HIT THE DOOR, THE WINDOW WILL ROLL DOWN, BUT NOT BACK UP UNLESS YOU PULL VERY HARD ON IT TO GET IT GOING. THE POWER STEERING HAS ALSO BEGAN TO GO OUT. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN IT WILL NOT STOP SQUEALING WHILE I TURN THE WHEEL AND IT IS ALMOST PULSING SO I CAN ONLY TURN THE WHEEL IN TINY INCREMENTS AT A TIME. THE STEERING SQUEAKS THE MOST WHEN THE WHEEL IS TURNED ALL THE WAY. *TR

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-04-27
- VIN: KMHHN65F24U
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: RIGHT TURN SIGNAL STAYS CONSTANTLY GLOWING OUT OF NO WHERE. TURNED THE LEFT SIGNAL ON AND THE RIGHT SIGNAL CAME ON AS WELL AND STAYS ON EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. IT DOESN'T BLINK IT JUST STAYS GLOWING. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS REPORTS FROM MECHANICS AND OTHER DRIVER WITH THE SAME VEHICLE THAT THE RELAY INSIDE THE BCM TENDS TO GO BAD. IF IT WERE JUST A FLUKE AND IT WAS JUST MINE THAT WAS BAD I WOULD COUGH UP THE MONEY AND REPLACE IT BUT IF I FIND NUMEROUS PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM THEN SEEMS LIKE HYUNDAI HAS A FAULTY PART AND IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED, AND ALSO FUNNY HOW IF YOU ORDER THE MODULE ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED THE PART NUMBER HAS CHANGED BECAUSE THEY HAVE UPDATED THAT MODULE SO THEY MUST HAVE EVEN FOUND A PROBLEM WITH THE MODULE. SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY PROBLEM AS IT CONFUSES DRIVERS AROUND ME BECAUSE MY RIGHT TURN SIGNAL IS CONSTANTLY GLOWING THEN ALL THE SUDDEN LEFT TURN SIGNAL IS FLASHING. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-03-30
- VIN: KMHHN65F24U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I HAVE A 2004 HYUNDAI TIBURON GT. WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND SWITCHED IT THE RIGHT TURN SIGNAL, IT WOULD NOT TURN OFF. I PULLED OVER AND WAS UNABLE TO GET IT OFF. EVEN AFTER SHUTTING OFF THE CAR AND REMOVING THE KEY, THE TURN SIGNAL REMAINED ON. THE ONLY WAY TO TURN IT OFF WAS TO REMOVE THE BULBS FRONT THE FRONT AND REAR HEADLIGHTS. I TOOK THE CAR TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND SAID THE BODY CONTROL MODULE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE COST TO REPLACE WAS $1,280. UPON RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ONLINE, IT APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE IN 2003-2004 TIBURONS FROM HYUNDAI. HYUNDAI WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR BECAUSE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THERE IS NOTHING A CONSUMER CAN DO TO "MAINTAIN" A BODY CONTROL MODULE AND HYUNDAI SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-10-10
- VIN: KMHHN65F34U
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 HYUNDAI TIBURON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CLUTCH WAS SLIPPING WHEN HE ACCELERATED UP TO 3,000 RPMS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER MORE THAN ONCE AND THE CLUTCH WAS REPLACED BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 82,000.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-01-15

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-01-01
- VIN: KMHHN65D74U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: MY 2004 HYUNDAI TIBURON SUFFERS FROM A LONG LIST OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. BOTH POWER WINDOW MOTORS HAVE STOPPED WORKING, MY POWER TRUNK LATCH IS DEFECTIVE, THE INTERIOR LIGHT SWITCH DOESN'T WORK, AND NOW THE TURN SIGNAL RELAY THAT IS PART OF THE BODY CONTROL MODULE HAS CAUSED INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH MY LEFT TURN SIGNAL. SOMETIMES IT STAYS ON EVEN AFTER TURNING OFF THE CAR. I'M WORRIED I MAY BE REAR-ENDED BECAUSE ALTHOUGH MY SIGNAL IS ON, IT SOMETIMES DOES NOT FLASH PROPERLY DUE TO THE FAULTY BCM. RESEARCH INDICATES THESE ARE VERY COMMON ISSUES WITH HYUNDAI VEHICLES, AND VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR. THE BCM IS ABOUT $700 ALONE. THE WINDOW MOTORS ARE ABOUT $300 EACH. IT IS RIDICULOUS TO PAY $700 FOR A SIGNAL LIGHT. HYUNDAI SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR SHODDY ENGINEERING! *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-11-26
- VIN: KMHHN65F74U
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2004 HYUNDAI TIBURON GT AND JUST HAD THE FOURTH POWERTRAIN, CLUTCH, FLYWHEEL, ETC INSTALLED TODAY DUE TO 3 FAILURES IN 90,000 MILES. THE LAST ONE THAT WAS PUT IN WAS IN FEBRUARY 2010 AND FAILED THIS TIME NOVEMBER 26, 2010, NOT EVEN LASTING A FULL YEAR. EACH TIME, I HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE RUN-AROUND AND NO ONE HAS TAKEN TIME TO ISSUE A RECALL OR ANYTHING, EVEN WITH THE HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED ALREADY. I AM ALMOST OUT OF MY WARRANTY AND AM SCARED THAT I WILL BE OUT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WHEN IT FAILS AGAIN. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU! *TR

I bought this car from a private seller. It's a '04 2dr coupe. I'm really happy with it, especially considering it's a 4cyl - it runs great and gets amazing gas mileage compared to the pickup I was driving. I've already received a ton of compliments on it in the one week I've owned it. It's a very sleek car and runs really smoothly.

Although it's not a manual 6 speed GTS Celica, I still think it's a great car. Hyundai has done an excellent job with both the styling and performance. This car is perfect for those who enjoy quick starts and cruising with a nice rumbling sound. The dual exhaust gives the car a high-end look and the engine a low bass rumble. Even to this day, people still don't know what it is. They stare at it as if to say, 'What the hell is that?' Thanks, T.J.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my thoughts on the Hyundai Tiburon. In my opinion, it's a really well-made car that's super fun to drive! It handles like a sports car and has plenty of power to make it a really enjoyable ride. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Tiburon. I bought it brand new back in January of '04 and I have to say, I was really impressed with the style and features that came with it, especially considering the price range. I know that Hyundai used to have a bad reputation, but they were really trying to turn things around in 03-04 and I think they did a great job with the Tiburon. I absolutely love my car! It has over 100,000 miles on it and the only issue I've had was around 40,000 miles when I had to replace the rotors. I make sure to change the oil every 6,500 miles and it still runs, looks, and drives great. One of my favorite things about it is how versatile it is - I can easily flip the seats down and fit my road bike in the trunk. Overall, I think it's probably the best car you can get for around $16,800. And have you seen the new ones? They're even sexier!

I've had my tiburon for 2 years now, and I must say, overall I'm very impressed. The car takes to every modification like a pro, and I've modified it past the point of recognition. Although the car has had some issues (which are known by every tiburon owner), such as the clutch design being a bit of a pain, as well as the dual mass flywheel setup, a conversion kit can be looked into for best results. The window motors are also known to go bad, and there is an alignment issue and syncros (which I have replaced under warranty). However, the car has good handling, great sound from the motor when modified, good acceleration, and excellent style. Sure, there are a few kinks, but they had to cheapen some parts to bring such a sports car at such an incredible price. A+ to Hyundai!

Your car looks amazing! It has the European sport car look that we all desire and it definitely turns heads and puts smiles on people's faces. However, it can be quite expensive to maintain and after owning it for a year or more, you may realize that you are paying for looks and nothing else. Some people have reported issues with the cams ticking at 41000 miles and clutches going out. Additionally, the car eats tires since most of the weight is in the front and the gas mileage could be better. While the performance may not be as good as some 4 cylinder cars, the V-6 is still impressive. The interior could use some refinement, but overall it's a great car to own!

Despite following all of the manufacturer's recommendations and providing proof of regular oil changes, my car's engine spun a bearing at around 70,000 miles. Unfortunately, I had to replace the engine and ended up spending $4,000 on the repairs. Despite my best efforts to take care of the car, I went through four engines in just six months. When I eventually traded it in, it only fetched $3,000. While my experience with Hyundai was disappointing, I remain confident in my decision to never purchase a vehicle from them again.

Although my car was purchased new in 2004, it has had some significant issues. The engine failed after three years, and now the airbag light is on, causing the engine to cut out while driving. As someone who takes good care of my car, I believe these are major problems that should not be happening. Additionally, the headlights bulbs do not seem to last very long. Overall, I am confident that my car should be running much better than it currently is.

I purchased my Tibby just over a month ago and it is a truly excellent car. While I have experienced some issues with shifting, I am confident that they will be resolved. The design, both inside and out, is fantastic and I am pleased with its performance. Although it may not be as fast as I initially expected, it still performs well in the 60-100 mph range. If you are considering purchasing this car, I recommend taking it for a test drive and thoroughly testing all gears. If you experience any difficulty with shifting, it may be best to consider other options. Overall, I am very satisfied with my decision to purchase this car.
Deondre Lemke 2024-01-01
I really appreciate this car, but it seems to have some issues. I bought it with around 90,000 miles on it, and after about 6 months, some problems started to arise. I had to replace the clutch and timing belt, and it had a cold air intake modification without a cover, which caused the check engine light to come on when it rained. Additionally, there were some leaks in the front gas pipe and both oil valves, the moonroof cover broke, and the rear window washer and driver side window stopped working. It seems like it needs significant repairs every 1-2 months. I'm not sure if it's just a lemon or not, as different mechanics have given me varying opinions on its condition and engine cleanliness.
